Why Is He Like This?! Parenting Boys with ADHD—What It Looks Like (and Feels Like) From the Inside Out

Season 5 · Episode 9

lundi 9 juin 2025Duration 11:42

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. This is the place where personal experience meets clinical expertise—because families don’t heal in isolation. They heal together.

If you’re parenting a boy with ADHD, you’ve likely asked yourself, “Why is he like this?!” Maybe you’ve been told he’s disrespectful, lazy, or doesn’t listen. Maybe you’ve tried reward charts, punishments, threats, and consequences—but nothing seems to stick. You’re not alone.

ADHD in boys often shows up as high energy, impulsivity, emotional outbursts, and what looks like defiance. But what’s really happening underneath is a brain that’s moving too fast, struggling with regulation, and desperately trying to keep up with a world that doesn’t always make sense to it.

Let’s get into what’s really going on—and what your son actually needs.

Unmasking ADHD in Girls: Understanding Their Unique Struggles!!!

Season 5 · Episode 8

lundi 9 juin 2025Duration 28:00

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist and Parenting Strategist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades.

This is the place where personal experience meets clinical expertise—because families don’t heal in isolation. They heal together.

If you’re parenting a daughter with ADHD, you might be surprised to learn just how often her symptoms are overlooked, misread, or misunderstood. Girls with ADHD are often people-pleasers, chronic perfectionists, and emotional shapeshifters. They’re expert maskers, which means they work hard to hide the chaos they feel inside.

They don’t always disrupt the classroom. Instead, they stare out the window. They don’t usually get labeled as “bad”—they’re labeled as “sensitive,” “anxious,” or “moody.” Because their behavior doesn’t look like typical hyperactivity, they’re often misdiagnosed—or missed altogether.

Girls with inattentive-type ADHD often internalize their symptoms. They may mask in public but unravel at home. They are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression—when ADHD is the root issue.

Forks, Feelings, and Frontal Lobes: The Neurology of Family Dinner for Neurodivergent Kids!!!!

Season 4 · Episode 13

dimanche 25 mai 2025Duration 20:47

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist specializing in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. So what you hear today isn’t just clinical—it's lived experience, it’s layered, and it’s honest.

Today's episode is all about why family dinner matters—and how something as simple as sitting down together each night can shape your child’s identity, executive functioning, nervous system, and emotional development. Starting this when they are young is highly encouraged. Let’s dive in!!

To the untrained eye, asking a child to “set the table” might look like a basic household chore. But to a therapist, educator, or neuroscientist, it’s a brilliant opportunity to build core executive functioning skills the brain’s high-level tools for planning, organization, impulse control, emotional regulation, and follow-through.

This one five-minute ritual engages multiple executive domains, especially for children with ADHD, anxiety, or sensory processing differences. It’s embedded in rhythm, connected to relationship, and disguised as an ordinary family task. But in truth—it’s daily brain training.

Hey Parents !!!! Are you tired of the Chaos? Start Saying “No.” Your Neurodivergent Child Needs It. No Isn’t Rejection—It’s Redirection!!

Season 4 · Episode 13

samedi 24 mai 2025Duration 52:22

"Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast.

I know what it feels like to second-guess your parenting decisions, to lie awake at night wondering if you were too harsh or not firm enough, and to carry the weight of wanting so badly to get it right—for a child who feels things more deeply, reacts more intensely, and needs more from you than most people understand.

This podcast is where clinical insight meets real life. Because peace isn’t perfect—but it is possible. And most days, it starts with showing up. Imperfectly, but consistently. With a deep breath and a willingness to learn.

So if you’ve ever wondered:

  • Am I being too strict?
  • Am I being too soft?
  • Why do my kid’s reactions feel so big—and why do mine feel even bigger?
  • How do I stay calm when my child is anything but?
  • And what do I do when nothing seems to work?

You’re in the right place. I’ve asked myself those same questions more times than I can count—and I want to walk through the answers with you, one compassionate, honest conversation at a time.

Today’s episode is a big one—and honestly, it’s one I wish someone had handed me years ago.

We’re diving into: How your parenting style literally shapes your child’s brain, behavior, and self-worth—especially when you’re raising a neurodivergent child.

This episode is for educational purposes and to provide support. They’re not a substitute for professional mental health evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment.”

So what you hear today isn’t just clinical—it's lived experience, it’s layered, and it’s honest.

Today, I want to talk about the part of ADHD that doesn’t get enough airtime: how it quietly shapes the entire family system. Not just the child with the diagnosis, but the sibling who becomes 'the easy one.' The parent who slowly becomes the household manager. The partner who fades into the background. The joy that gets replaced by survival.

In this episode, we’re naming the silent impact—and giving you tools to repair it.”

“It’s Not Opposition—It’s Dopamine Why Your Partner with ADHD Shuts Down During Tasks They Don’t Want to Do!!!.

Season 4 · Episode 11

lundi 19 mai 2025Duration 26:31

Welcome back to The Path to Peace Therapy Podcast. I’m Stephanie Buckley—an AMFT Solution-Focused Therapist who specializes in ADHD, OCD, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son and have been married for over three decades. Here, we talk about the messy, real-life intersections of mental health and relationships—with clarity, compassion, and practical tools you can use today.

Let me ask you something:

Have you ever asked your partner to do something—something totally reasonable, like take out the trash or help with dinner—and they suddenly act like you’ve just asked them to run a marathon barefoot?

Your partner’s struggle with “simple” tasks isn’t laziness or selfishness. It’s executive dysfunction. And dopamine is the driver.

Let’s break that down.

Executive dysfunction refers to the difficulties people with ADHD have when it comes to starting tasks, planning ahead, switching gears, staying organized, or remembering to follow through. It's like the brain's CEO is off-duty—or stuck in traffic. Even if they want to help or get things done, their brain struggles to coordinate the steps required.

I’m also a mom to a now-thriving 22-year-old neurodivergent son, and I’ve been married for over three decades. Around here, we keep it honest, grounded, and always focused on what works.

Today’s episode is all about something I get asked all the time: “How do I set boundaries with my child, partner, or parent who has ADHD—without making them feel ashamed or broken?”

Let’s Stay Connected!

The more we learn to recognize the signs behind the behaviors, the more compassion and support we can offer—to our kids, our partners, and ourselves.
