Ep 64 | Unpacking Nutrition Myths & Supplement Dogma with Rachel Arthur | The Nuance of Nutrients28 Aug 202601:06:55

We had the pleasure of chatting with Rachel Arthur to unpack how nutrition dogma forms in naturopathic training and practice, why “more is better” thinking persists, and how marketing and practitioner insecurity can drive reflexive prescribing. Rachel challenges the common habit of blanket B-complex prescribing and how nutrient actions are regulated, relational, and rarely isolated. We also explore reassurance as a clinical tool, the “medicine beyond the bottle” (language, hope, and expectancies), humility in the face of complexity (including microbiome effects of supplements), and nuanced examples like timing calcium to manage PTH and support bone health, plus common misreads of iron studies in shared care.

Ep 62 | Why Are We Scared of The Sun? In Defense of Sunlight & Naked Cartwheels in The Sun | Nuanced Advice on Sun Exposure & Sun Protection22 Jun 202601:10:23

Julie and Karinda are back from the NHAA Herbal Medicine Summit to tackle one of the most controversial, misunderstood topics in functional health: sunlight.

Inspired by the hot-off-the-press book, In Defense of Sunlight by Rowan Jacobsen, they look past the rigid “slip, slop, slap” messaging to explore why sun avoidance might actually be driving our chronic disease epidemic. From the evolutionary biology of pale skin and blue eyes, to how your skin microbiome builds UV-resistant, cancer-fighting bacteria when exposed to natural light, this episode is a masterclass in circadian nuance.

Ready to take this deeper and build your own strategic light routine? Join us for our upcoming live masterclass, Returning to Our Natural Rhythm: How to Use Sunlight and Darkness for Whole Body Health and Healing, on Thursday, July 2nd at 6:30 PM AEST. We’ll show you how to assess your skin type, build a solar callus, and optimise your circadian biology from sunrise to bedtime.

Ep 61 | All About Creatine | Naturopaths Bust Myths & Talk Facts About Creatine Supplementation | Creatine Benefits, Research and Nuance for Women, Aging, and Genetics16 Apr 202600:53:48

A very nuanced deep dive into creatine, starting off with some technical difficulties and audio glitches! Thanks for bearing with us!

In this episode of The Nuanced Naturopaths, we unpack creatine supplementation amid its growing popularity; we don’t commonly rely on it, but are frequently asked about it. We explain what creatine is, how it supports ATP energy production, and why it has been viewed as a “gym bro” supplement, then review evidence for benefits including improved strength, power, lean mass, some anaerobic performance measures, and potential cognitive effects like reduced mental fatigue and improved memory, especially in people with low baseline creatine. There's nuances for vegetarians/vegans, older adults, and midlife women, including lower creatine stores in women and estrogen’s role in creatine production. We address myths about sufficiency from diet, genetic/methylation considerations (homocysteine, MTHFR, B vitamins), and safety concerns such as kidney risk with high-dose protocols, emphasizing individualized assessment and evidence-based dosing.

Ep 60 I All About Functional Testing I Hormone, Stool, Genomic & Hair Testing for Complex Health Issues | Functional Testing in Naturopathy: When It Helps, When It’s Optional, and Why Context Matters09 Mar 202600:41:13

Today we discuss the benefits and limits of functional testing, emphasizing patient-centred, tailored decisions rather than blanket protocols, especially given cost and the value of thorough history, case taking, and clinical exams. We explain that tests are snapshots in time, results can be delayed, and fundamentals like sleep, circadian rhythm, hydration, nutrition, and nervous system regulation can be addressed while waiting, noting some supplements and diet changes can skew results. We share examples where genomic testing clarified B-vitamin needs, and where hair mineral analysis plus gut and organic acids testing revealed toxic copper driving mineral transport issues. We contrast comprehensive testing with GP panels, detailing the DUTCH test’s broader hormone, metabolite, toxin, cortisol, and melatonin insights and the importance of timing hormone testing seven days post-ovulation. They also outline advanced stool testing methods and markers, discuss celiac-related findings, and frame genetic risk as modifiable by environment.

Ep 59 I Testing 101 I The Pros & Cons of Blood Tests, Bone Scans & More | Getting Accurate Blood Tests | How Naturopaths Look at Blood Tests Differently03 Mar 202600:40:12

Julie and Karinda explain how many GPs primarily flag only results outside reference ranges to identify frank disease states, while they also use functional/optimal ranges and compare multiple markers over time using historical results to spot trends and support prevention. They outline practical factors that can skew blood tests—fasting too long (aim ~10 hours; avoid >12), exercising (even up to 48 hours prior), stress, illness/recovery, dehydration, and timing/queues — encouraging consistency across tests, including seasonality. They discuss Australia’s Medicare limits influencing GP test ordering and note naturopaths can arrange private tests. Other GP-aligned testing covered includes coronary artery calcium scoring for cardiovascular risk and DEXA/bone testing (including an ultrasound option with fragility scoring), plus concerns about medication side effects and interactions.

The Nuanced Naturopaths Podcast is a friendly conversation between two friends, us! Karinda and Julie. We’re passionate about finding the nuance in natural health. As degree-qualified naturopaths, we like to ask the questions that need to be asked - about all aspects of health, healing and well-being. We delight in questioning firmly held beliefs and finding the nuance in all subjects health-related and beyond. Sometimes it can get a little technical, but hopefully we explain things in a way that's accessible to anyone interested in natural health, whether you’re a practitioner or someone who wants to learn more and optimise your wellbeing. It’s a chat about poop, periods and everything in between - buckle up for a laugh, a cry and for some things you are yet to consider about your health! Stay nuanced!

Ep 54 | The Truth About Vitamin D | Taking Vitamin D versus Making Vitamin D | The Nuance of Sunlight, Vitamin D Functions, History & Testing02 Sep 202501:10:55

In this episode, Julie and Karinda dive deep into the often misunderstood world of Vitamin D. From an in-depth discussion on its history, functions, and the difference between Vitamin D obtained via sunlight versus supplementation, this episode covers it all. They explore emerging research that reveals Vitamin D is more akin to a hormone than a vitamin and discuss the critical roles it plays in our bodies, such as regulating bone health, modulating the immune system, and even its potential anti-cancer benefits. The episode also delves into the importance of natural sunlight exposure, the insufficiency of vitamin D supplementation alone, and the surprising relationship between vitamin D and melatonin. Tune in for a comprehensive exploration that challenges common misconceptions and emphasizes the elegance of natural biochemical processes.

Ep 53 | The Problem with Protocols & Simplifying Treatments for Complex Health Issues | But Don't Knock Our 'Simple' Tips Til You Try Them!03 Aug 202500:52:04

Today (recorded in the studio-van!), we explore the common issues faced when oversimplifying complex health problems, particularly in the context of naturopathy (using SIBO and PCOS as some examples!). We discuss how patients often seek simple answers to complex conditions, which can lead to inadequate treatment and persistent health issues. The heart of naturopathy and how WE practice, will always come back to personalised care, addressing root causes, and how sometimes the simplest interventions, like chewing food properly or using a Squatty Potty, can have the greatest impact. We also cover the pitfalls of relying on the internet for health advice and the distinction between protocols and programs/packages.~

Ep 52 | Vitamin B6, Ditch Your Vita-Gummies & Laughing at Probiotic Ads | Nutrition & Food as Medicine29 Jul 202500:45:58

*NOTE: Huge audio-visual sync issue for most of this episode. Karinda's brain couldn't handle fixing it. Sorry, video watchers!

In this light-hearted (but always informative!) episode, acknowledging we're more 'edu-comedy' than strictly education, we dive into the implications of over-supplementation, focusing primarily on vitamin B6 and its side effects, such as peripheral neuropathy. We cover the quality and sources of nutrients in the Australian diet, and the importance of proper supplementation guidance. They also touch on the efficacy and concerns surrounding gummy supplements (you might hate us), frozen vegetables (you might be surprised at our thoughts!), and the role of probiotics. Come laugh at silly marketing with us.

Ep 48 | Mouth Taping Deep Dive | The Science, Why & How of Mouth Taping | Natural Remedies for Better Sleep05 May 202500:50:42

*CORRECTION: At 18:59, we start talking about nasal "turbicles". We say this word a lot. We get excited, and even question if "turbicles" is the right word, before agreeing that it's the right word, and carrying on. Future editing Karinda realises we in fact meant to say "nasal turbinates" - not turbicles. Turbicles aren't a thing. You're cordially invited to laugh at our mistake. You can suss out what these look like and their function here

IN THIS EP:

We dive deep into the practice of mouth taping and its impressive benefits for sleep quality and overall health. We go through our personal experiences with mouth taping, different types of tapes, and address common concerns and misconceptions (we get it, it seems odd at first, or scary at most!). Let's explore the link between nasal breathing, nitric oxide production, and improved oxygenation and recovery, and how mouth taping can aid in reducing snoring and sleep apnea. As always, you'll get a mix of science, personal anecdotes, tidbits of advice and a good ole laugh.

    Ep 44 | The Nuance of Side Effects | Is Vitamin B6 Dangerous?! | Re-Thinking Panadol Use + more31 Jan 202500:58:27

One thing that drugs, supplements & herbal medicines have in common is that they can produce undesired outcomes, also known as side effects. But what are side effects, really? And why do they occur? We get knee-deep in nuance in this ep, also covering the recent Vitamin B6 toxicity controversy and a big (but often overlooked) problem with our nation’s beloved Panadol (paracetamol). Welcome back!

Ep 42 | Tackling the Topic of Weight | The Science of Fat and Nuance of Body Weight15 Oct 202401:00:31

In this episode we look at the nuance in the discussion around fat, and obesity and what it means in terms of health. You literally can’t judge a book by its chunky cover, nor can you decide that a skinny ‘book’ is healthy either. This episode reveals the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it. We uncover nuance in the terminology of the adipostat (body weight set point), obesogens, lipedema, the recent change to the food landscape and a holistic look at the meaning of health.

**Correction: When talking about fatty liver Julie said ‘visceral fat within the liver’ when meant to use the term ‘ectopic fat’.

Check out this new article "Obese and Healthy" which summarises our points in this episode.

Further nuance: We open the can of worms that is excess body fat to examine the nuance around using body size to determine one's state of health. We are not saying that carrying excess body fat is innately healthy - but, nor is it always unhealthy! Nor is it a direct product of food and lifestyle choices, necessarily. Medical practitioners, gym instructors, and the general public often look at body weight as a ‘one size fits all’ determinant of health and can unfairly apply judgement, or in some cases diagnoses, or other assumptions inappropriately. The resulting guilt and shame can be arguably more damaging than the cardiometabolic implications that excess fat sometimes carries. Equally, overlooking these risk factors in people of slimmer build can be dangerous, being thin or even athletic does not guarantee good overall health. This episode is only the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it.

Ep 36 | Depression & Complex Trauma: Exploring a potential root cause of depression | Our relationship with depression, childhood, nervous system dysregulation26 May 202400:26:18

Please practice self-responsibility when consuming media that contains themes which could negatively impact your mental health or emotional balance. We discuss depression & childhood trauma in this episode. If you choose to listen, please ensure you have tools and resources at-the-ready to help regulate yourself. Helpful resources & links below.

Karinda heard something about depression (and trauma) on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast interviewing Tim Fletcher, made a post about it, and Julie reacts in real-time to this perspective. As naturopaths, we’re passionate about getting to the root of symptoms, so when we heard the idea of depression as a means of “slowing down” your nervous system, activating your rest-digest-restore healing mechanisms, we had to talk about it. Julie graciously reads out Karinda’s caption, which includes some of her own history with nervous system dysregulation, trauma and depression.

Ep 34 | What’s the Problem with Skincare & Cosmetics? | Naturopathic Takes on Hair Removal, Deodorants & MORE! | Our Low-Tox, Holistic Skincare Routines13 May 202401:08:56

You asked, we... tried to deliver! In this ep we're exploring skincare, makeup, deodorant, hair removal, pubic hair from a naturopathic, holistic perspective. We share our stories, what we use, ingredients we avoida, and how becoming naturopaths made us get-real (and low-tox) with our skin. We cover the physical risks of using conventional skincare & harsh ingredients, as well as the cultural narratives we’re sold, to (literally) sell products, the environmental impact of modern skincare & how living in alignment with your values when it comes to skin is the most important point.

Because yes, your skin is an organ & the first line of defence for your immune system, and yes, what you put on it matters!

Ep 33 | Glyphosate Deep Dive | Is Modern Agriculture Causing a Health Crisis? [Part 1]02 Apr 202400:54:13

We finally went there! This is the first instalment of our Glyphosate series (who knows how many there will be). Glyphosate is a part of RoundUp, a widely used herbicide. It also acts a broad-spectrum antibiotic. So what happens when human exposure to Glyphosate has increased more than 500% in 2 decades? How does this impact our health, soil quality, and the quality of the food we're eating? We start to cover these important points and more. In the next Glyphosate episode, we'll be sure to cover more on what you can do about your exposure, protecting yourself and your family, and feeling empowered in your health. Take some deep breaths during this one!

Ep 27 | What's the Deal with Plant Based Milks, Vegetable Oils and Emulsifiers?!28 Jan 202400:39:21

A totally impromptu episode, which was originally going to be about something completely different! Classic us. But we're glad we went down this rabbit-hole as plant based milks are all the rave, with new ones coming onto the market & cafe scene constantly (it seems!). But it's not as simple as "it's from a plant, so it's good for you!". Plus, we cover a little bit about the microbiota & gut health... because... how could we not?

We delight in questioning firmly held beliefs and finding the nuance in all subjects health-related and beyond. Sometimes it can get a little technical, but hopefully we explain things in a way that's accessible to anyone interested in natural health, whether you’re a practitioner or someone who wants to learn more and optimise your wellbeing. It’s a chat about poop, periods and everything in between - buckle up for a laugh, a cry and for some things you are yet to consider about your health! Stay nuanced!

Ep 23 | Laura Taylor Helps Us Decode Iron Deficiency Mysteries03 Nov 202300:52:45

Laura Taylor, Naturopath and self-confessed science-nerd, dives into the nuance of decoding iron metabolism. What most health professionals are taught in their degrees does not generally reflect the latest understandings of iron markers and what they represent. Ahead of her upcoming webinar ‘The Iron Code’, Laura has dived down ALL the rabbit-holes, and uses her natural talent for explaining the complex in easily understood terms. Buckle in for a ride, and learn how to more accurately interpret what is going on with iron - it might challenge your understanding, but will almost certainly broaden it.

Ep 22 | The Healing Power of Nature, Birdsong & Deep Listening with Andrew Skeoch18 Oct 202301:27:24

This episode marks our first outdoor recording experience, with nature sounds delightfully interrupting the conversation. We chat to nature sound recordist & author, Andrew Skeoch, about ‘deep listening to nature’ (also the title of his fabulous new book) and how to do it. We talk about how listening to the sounds around us can connect us with the landscape, calm our mind and body, and remind us that we are animals after all. This discussion took us in many directions we didn't anticipate, but were delighted to land in nonetheless. We thoroughly enjoyed Andrew's knowledge coming through as he identifies various bird's chirping in. We hope you enjoy this rich, nuanced conversation immersed in nature.

Ep 21 | Mark Payne on Functional Medicine, Cardiometabolic Health, Insulin Resistance, Hydration and SO much more!11 Oct 202301:00:55

Why should we care about heart health in our 20s and 30s? What’s the difference between salt and sodium? How do we pick up on blood sugar problems early? And how do we know if we’re properly hydrated?

Mark's passion for health optimisation, longevity and cardiometabolic health is obvious in this episode & helps us answer these questions (plus much more).

He discusses why we should be motivated about heart health well before we ‘need to’, an easy all-round hydration protocol, and unpacks the nuance of insulin resistance. He talks about his current interest in the benefits of near-infrared saunas combined with low-pressure hypobaric therapy for increasing energy and improving cardiovascular health.

This jam-packed episode is a must-listen for all!

Ep 20 | Is Oxygen Messing With Your Gut? | Deep Dive into the Layers of Your Intestinal Tract27 Sep 202301:06:57

Julie was up at 2am diving deep into a research paper on this... so you know it's gonna be juicy. We talk about intestinal hyper-permeability (IHP), aka "leaky gut", your intestinal wall (that's only one cell thick!) and how your microbiome contributes the the amount of oxygen in your gut... and how this oxygen might be contributing to your digestive symptoms (IBS, SIBO, gas, bloating, reflux, etc).
