183. Communication Strategies for Managers
Episode 183
lundi 26 août 2024 • Duration 15:55
Most of how work gets done is through communication. Every day you're speaking up in meetings, delivering presentations, fielding interruptions, and responding to emails, chats, and DMs. To get out of feeling overwhelmed and, instead, feel more confident in getting things done, you want to take a step back and have some intentional communication strategies. Let's discuss!

182. Being a Hard Worker, and Saying No
Episode 182
lundi 12 août 2024 • Duration 14:27
Being on a leadership journey requires both personal growth and professional development. The way you did things in the past, does not mean it's the best way to do things now. Learning how to look with new eyes, take a new approach, and try a new way is part of the job!
In this episode, find out why you might say YES all the time (and why it's hard to say NO). Especially when you're a hard worker, and care deeply about those who are depending on you.

173. Managing Up - Power and Partnership
Episode 173
lundi 10 juin 2024 • Duration 22:30
No matter where you are in the organization, it's helpful to think about managing up. (Even if you are the Executive Director or CEO, you might still manage up to the Board!)
Start with awareness of the power dynamic and power differential -- which can vary widely depending on the organizational culture (is it super hierarchical? or more flat?) and the personalities involved. Ask yourself: What do I know about this person? How to they measure success? What do they care about? Prioritize?
Then think about it through the lens of partnership: what are your roles, and how can you work well together?
Let's discuss!

86. Emotions at Work
Episode 86
lundi 29 août 2022 • Duration 19:27
Being a human means you have access to all the emotions -- as does everyone you work with! Becoming a manager will bring up everything from self-doubt, fear of failure, and frustration. . . to connection, inspiration, and confidence. The best part of work is when we feel proud, valued, and respected. The worst is when we feel a lack of trust, discouraged, or chronically frustrated. Understanding emotions are important for every manager (and human, lets be honest.) In this episode we walk through the very basics of understanding emotion as an experience, so you can begin to work with them more effectively.

85. Making Good Use of Your Time
Episode 85
lundi 22 août 2022 • Duration 20:28
When you start managing people, you will be making new decisions about how you use your time. Some of your time will be in strategic thinking and planning, some will be in execution, some in communicating, and other relationship management tasks. You must learn how to use your time well, rather than letting yourself feel overwhelmed -- which leads to avoidance, reactivity, and never feeling like you have a handle on things. Each week, take a moment to pause and ask yourself: What am I spending my time on? And why? What am I avoiding? And why? Taking a little time to regularly reflect, assess, and decide how to use your time will ensure you use the rest of your time intentionally, rather than reactively. Let's discuss!

________________
One reason we hold on to anxiety and perfection is because of an underlying belief that you need them to be successful. You might think that perfection makes you detail oriented, and anxiety motivates you towards achievement -- and you may have been rewarded for them! In this episode, you'll get some ideas for how to think differently, so you can achieve what you want but in a new way. It will make you a better manager, and you'll become more authentically confident. Let's talk about it.

80. Three Skills for your Manager Toolkit
Episode 80
lundi 18 juillet 2022 • Duration 12:36
There are three skills every manager needs: Advocacy, Giving Feedback, and Boundaries. Today we explore how they all connect. When you know what you want, the next step is to consider how to go about making happen. Is it something you need to advocate for? Do you need to give someone feedback, to create a desired change? Or is this a boundary issue that requires you to clarify an agreement with yourself? Let's discuss.
