In the first episode of our Boxing theme, we delve into Martin Scorsese's 1980 masterpiece, Raging Bull. Starring a young and up-and-coming Joe Pesci, alongside an Oscar-winning performance from Robert De Niro, this film takes a deep dive into the turbulent life of Jake LaMotta, a middleweight boxer whose self-destructive tendencies threaten to ruin his career and personal relationships. On this one we explore the film's themes of toxic masculinity, jealousy, and redemption, as well as its stunning black-and-white cinematography and beautifully crafted sequences. Whether you're fan of boxing or just love a good character study, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the crossroads of boxing and cinema. For the final episode of our “Teenage Riot” theme, The Movie Newbie is revisiting one of the defining texts in 20th century cinema… Francois Truffaut’s timeless coming-of-age tale THE 400 BLOWS. Studied in every Intro to Film Class, this 1959 masterpiece of the French New Wave distils the excitement and loneliness of the disobedient child unlike any other. Based on Truffaut's own rebellious and tragic childhood, the story follows a young Parisian by the name of Antoine Doinel as he skips school, steals from his parents, and eventually runs away from his parents. It's a timeless classic — and one that we uniformly loved on the podcast — so we were thrilled to meet in the studio to pick apart the acting, music, cinematography and more.

For this episode, The Movie Newbie dives into the world of Martin McDonagh's dark comedy Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri. A spit-fire screenplay, almost written to perfection by McDonagh, Three Billboards offers incredible performances from across the board, including a scene-stealing Sam Rockwell. 

Frances shines in what can be her finest performance to date, giving us her raw power and brutality as well as her vulnerability and sensitivity, delicately balancing and juggling the nuances of an incredibly layered character. 

There's no better way to see off this theme than with this hilarious and devastating story about a mother seeking justice.

YO WHAT IS UP! We are back again with the third and final film of our Saudi Arabian Cinema theme, The Book of Sun. On this one, we meet a group of Saudi teenagers with dreams of being filmmakers like "the greats" Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino. Joined by one of their teachers at school, the group embark on a comedic, yet touching journey to create their first film. Starring Sohayb Godus, Baraa Alem, Ismail Alhassan, Ahmed Saddam, Nawaf Alshubaili and Eyad Ayman Kaifi, The Book of Sun exemplifies what it's like being a young person navigating the strange waters of making it in Saudi Arabia.
