| 8. That Summer Feeling: Midsommar | 01 Jun 2020 | 01:12:52 | |
The first horror entry in the Movie Newbie canon was one that didn’t receive a fond appreciation by our host and dear friend Jabriel, not because it was not necessarily a bad movie but because it served its true purpose, sending several chills down his spine. Midsommar centres around a couple travelling to rural Sweden with some of their friends in order to experience the fabled pagan tradition to which the title suggests. The unsettling journey Ari Aster takes us through turns this easy-to-swallow premise into a hard-to-digest story that will have your eyebrows slightly, if not fully, lifted by the time the credits roll. | 84. Keep Rolling: Rope | 11 Apr 2023 | 00:42:08
For the first film of Raph's "Keep Rolling" theme, we take a look at Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 film, Rope. Based on the Patrick Hamilton play, the film tells the story of two men who murder for philosophical reasons, then host a party in the apartment where the body is hidden. Starring John Dall, James Stewart, Farley Granger and Constance Collier, this psychological thriller is littered with great performances. On this one, we discuss how Rope stands out as a daring work that pushes the boundaries of cinema, its notable use of long takes & hidden cuts (lol "hidden") creating the continuous shot, as well as its exploration of taboo subjects such as homosexuality and murder. We also delve into the themes of the film, including the Nietzschean concept of the "superman or ubermensch" and the idea of intellectual arrogance leading to moral corruption. Additionally, we analyze the performances of the cast, including James Stewart's portrayal of a former teacher who suspects that his students may be responsible for the murder. Join us as we explore themes of morality, guilt, and obsession in this classic Hitchcock masterpiece. | 80. Boxing Films: Raging Bull (feat. Lorna Searl) | 13 Mar 2023 | 00:50:10
In the first episode of our Boxing theme, we delve into Martin Scorsese's 1980 masterpiece, Raging Bull. Starring a young and up-and-coming Joe Pesci, alongside an Oscar-winning performance from Robert De Niro, this film takes a deep dive into the turbulent life of Jake LaMotta, a middleweight boxer whose self-destructive tendencies threaten to ruin his career and personal relationships. On this one we explore the film's themes of toxic masculinity, jealousy, and redemption, as well as its stunning black-and-white cinematography and beautifully crafted sequences. Whether you're fan of boxing or just love a good character study, this episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the crossroads of boxing and cinema. We also reference Harry Potter way too much... I don't even know. We're also are happy to introduce our first guest of the season Lorna Searl. Lorna is an editor at Trim London, a cinephile, and Jabriel's sugar mama (she finances the podcast). | 77. Teenage Riot: The 400 Blows (Les Quatre Cents Coups) | 19 Dec 2022 | 00:48:52
"Here lies poor Antoine Doinel, unjustly punished by Sourpuss for a pinup fallen from the sky..." For the final episode of our “Teenage Riot” theme, The Movie Newbie is revisiting one of the defining texts in 20th century cinema… Francois Truffaut’s timeless coming-of-age tale THE 400 BLOWS. Studied in every Intro to Film Class, this 1959 masterpiece of the French New Wave distils the excitement and loneliness of the disobedient child unlike any other. Based on Truffaut's own rebellious and tragic childhood, the story follows a young Parisian by the name of Antoine Doinel as he skips school, steals from his parents, and eventually runs away from his parents. It's a timeless classic — and one that we uniformly loved on the podcast — so we were thrilled to meet in the studio to pick apart the acting, music, cinematography and more. ***

“What’s your damage, Heather?” For the second instalment of Oliver's "Teenage Riot" theme, the Movie Newbies are diving into Michael Lehmann's 1989 cult classic HEATHERS. Starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater as the Bonnie and Clyde for the MTV Generation, Heathers is an ultra-dark, subversive, outrageous and delightfully weird teen comedy about teen suicide and the dog-eat-dog nature of high school. It has been said that without Heathers, there wouldn't be Mean Girls. To find out if we agree, check out the new episode today! ***

| 73. Frances McDormand: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri | 22 Nov 2022 | 00:50:18 | |
For this episode, The Movie Newbie dives into the world of Martin McDonagh's dark comedy Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri. A spit-fire screenplay, almost written to perfection by McDonagh, Three Billboards offers incredible performances from across the board, including a scene-stealing Sam Rockwell. Frances shines in what can be her finest performance to date, giving us her raw power and brutality as well as her vulnerability and sensitivity, delicately balancing and juggling the nuances of an incredibly layered character.
