My name is Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss, and this is the hub for all of my shiurim (classes) on Sefer Mishlei, a.k.a. The Book of Proverbs! Generally speaking we will follow the approach to Mishlei outlined by Saadia Gaon who views Mishlei as a guide for intelligent decision-making in everyday life with the goal of maximizing long-term pleasure and minimizing long-term pain. Each shiur will typically focus on one pasuk (verse), which we will attempt to analyze on our own before turning to the meforshim (commentators). If you have any questions feel free to email me at rabbischneeweiss at gmail. Thanks for listening!

Mishlei 15:30 - Happy Hearts and Fat Bones (Part 2)

Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/12/25), in our last morning Mishlei shiur of the season, we began by reviewing yesterday's approaches, then delved into the peshat approach given by Rashi (!) and the Rid (!!), supported by the Rambam (!!!). After that, we took another swing at Metzudas David, and concluded with a quick read-through of the Malbim and some final words from Aristotle's Metaphysics.

I can't believe it's been FIVE YEARS since I started giving regular post-HS Mishlei shiurim and recording them! Unlike the past few years, I'm going to take a break from Mishlei shiurim over the summer. God willing, we'll resume in September. I hope you keep learning Mishlei on your own, and if you do, I'm always game to discuss a pasuk!

Summer is almost here, and I’m planning to level up my Substack game. In addition to my weekly article on the parashah, I’ve got a ton of other topics I want to write about, many of which are experimental (or spicy) enough to keep behind the paywall. I’m looking for sponsors and I'm willing to offer an insane deal: for every WEEK of Torah content you sponsor, I’ll comp you a full YEAR of paid subscriber access to my Substack. This offer is good through the end of June or until all my summer content is sponsored, whichever comes first.

Even a small contribution goes a long way to covering the costs of my podcasts, and will provide me with the financial freedom to produce even more Torah content for you.

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (6/11/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we took up a pasuk which I anticipated to be difficult, due to the unfamiliar (and possibly outdated) references in the pasuk. Fortunately, we were able to develop at least one nice approach. We concluded by reading Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah in preparation for tomorrow, which will be our final shiur of the 2024-2025 season.

Mishlei 15:26 - Abominably Evil Thoughts and Purely Pleasant Statements (Part 2)

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/8/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we continued analyzing yesterday's pasuk. Our main focus was on the Malbim's creative read, which led us into a topic in this week's parashah: "Do not hate your brother in your heart" (Vayikra 19:17). After discussing the halachos and applications, as codified by the Rambam, we returned to our pasuk and learned the commentary of two Geronans: Rabbeinu Yonah and Rabbeinu Sheishes ben Yitzchak. Another great haul!

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/30/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, turned out to be one of the most amazing days of Mishlei learning in recent memory! We spent the first half hour refining each of the already-excellent approaches from yesterday, then we read Rabbeinu Yonah, who gave us three more! Really practical, fundamental stuff and fun discussions!

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/29/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began a pasuk filled with "Mishleic knowledge terminology": chochmah, navon, ksil, yediah. I thought we'd get bogged down in the jargon, but instead, we developed several really nice ideas! The biggest question on all of our ideas was: "What is the practical application?" - a question I'd like to return to tomorrow, when we review what we learned, finish analyzing Metzudas David, and move on to the other meforshim.

Mishlei 14:32 - How the Tzadik and Rasha Handle Adversity (Part 2)

Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/23/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we continued analyzing yesterday's pasuk. You know the expression, "you win some, you lose some"? Well, that doesn't apply in Mishlei EVEN when you don't emerge from a learning session with a clear, succinct, satisfactory explanation. Why not? Because so much of the benefit of learning Mishlei comes from the analysis and discussion itself. Today, we pretty much ended up where we were yesterday as far as a conclusive understanding goes. Sure, we made some NICE moves and explored some intriguing possibilities, but this was one of the few Mishlei shiurim (out of the 530+ shiurim I've recorded over the past four years) in which I felt like we NEEDED a third session. Tzarich iyun, as they say!

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/22/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning what initially seemed to be a cryptic pasuk. We quickly developed a few approaches, all of which were fruitful. We began learning the Metzudas David which we'll continue working on tomorrow before learning some other meforshim. Based on what we've seen so far, it looks like this is yet another pasuk which highlights how Mishleic development (or lack thereof) directly affects a person's relationship with Hashem.

Mishlei 13:22 - How to Make Sure Your Grandkids Enjoy Their Money

Length: 1 hour 38 minutes
Synopsis: Tonight (5/20/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which fell into three problematic categories: (1) "quasi-non-sequitur," (2) "Is this really true?!" and (3) "Oh no - the meforshim barely say anything!" Thankfully, we were able to come up with one major approach on our own (supported by Metzudas David) and a second approach based on Rabbeinu Yonah and the Meiri. We were even able to crack the Meiri's derech nistar approach!

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/16/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we supported yesterday's two approaches with explanations from the meforshim. Next, we learned the Malbim's idea, which took us into my favorite comments from the Malbim on Iyov in which he spells out his views on hashgachah. At the very end, we speculated on what type of derech nistar idea the Meiri might give, but we'll have to wait until next week (בג"ה) because the Meiri learns this week's pasuk as connected to next week's. All in all, we walked away with a LOT of nice ideas this week!

Mishlei 14:31 - Dissing the Creator by Mistreating the Poor (Part 1)

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/15/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a pasuk which exemplifies the interrelationship between mussar and our relationship with God. We developed two approaches, found one of them acknowledged by Metzudas David, and were then blindsided by Rabbeinu Yonah. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll review, learn some other meforshim, and try to understand what made Rabbeinu Yonah explain the pasuk as he did.

The bulk of these articles will remain free.
