| Dr. Nina Teicholz | America's Metabolic Decline: The High-Cost of Low Fat | The Metabolic Link Ep 80 | 04 Nov 2025 | 01:05:43 | |
For over fifty years, Americans have been told that cutting fat was the key to better health. Yet after decades of low-fat guidelines, rates of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction have skyrocketed - now affecting more than 88% of the population. In this episode of The Metabolic Link, Victoria Field sits down with Dr. Nina Teicholz, science journalist and author of The Big Fat Surprise, whose decade-long investigation into nutrition science uncovered how flawed evidence and policy decisions shaped the way we eat. Her research reveals a troubling gap between the science and the guidelines meant to protect public health. Answered in this episode:
This conversation provides a rigorous examination of how weak associational data became entrenched policy, the metabolic consequences of replacing saturated fats with refined carbohydrates and seed oils, and what the path forward looks like for evidence-based nutrition science. More of Dr. Teicholz:

| Can a Ketogenic Diet Improve Sleep Apnea? | Dr. Jonathan Jun | The Metabolic Link Ep. 78. | 08 Oct 2025 | 00:47:07 | |
What if the food you eat could change the way you breathe at night? In this episode, recorded live at The Metabolic Health Summit, Dr. Jonathan Jun reveals how metabolism and sleep-disordered breathing are deeply connected, and why shifting from carbs to fat might improve more than just your waistline. Dr. Jonathan Jun, a leading researcher on obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), walks us through the groundbreaking KETOHS trial, where a ketogenic diet was tested for its effects on carbon dioxide retention, sleep apnea severity, and metabolic health. The findings suggest ketosis may do more than promote weight loss - it could directly enhance respiratory efficiency and sleep quality in patients with OHS and OSA. From a long-forgotten 1976 fasting study to modern clinical data, this lecture reframes the connection between diet, breathing, and metabolism, revealing how nutritional ketosis might transform respiratory and metabolic medicine. Questions Answered in This Episode:

| The Metabolic Approach to Treating Food Addiction | Dr. Tro Kalayjian | The Metabolic Link Ep. 77 | 01 Oct 2025 | 01:22:48 | |
Could treating food like a drug be the breakthrough we've needed in food addiction treatment? In this episode of The Metabolic Link, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino sits down with Dr. Tro Kalayjian - physician, researcher, and former obesity patient - to explore whether food addiction should be classified as a true addiction, and how his TOWARD model is helping patients overcome binge eating and food-related compulsions. Dr. Tro shares findings from his recent peer-reviewed paper, TOWARD: a Metabolic Health Intervention That Improves Food Addiction and Binge Eating Symptoms. The study evaluated outcomes from the TOWARD intervention, a telemedicine-based model that combines metabolic nutrition, real-time biofeedback, and coaching. Nearly half of participants reduced food addiction symptoms, and over 80% saw improvements in binge eating - often independent of weight loss. This conversation explores the science of dopamine signaling, the failure of calorie-restriction models, the blurred line between food addiction and eating disorders, and how this approach could reshape treatment through scalable, real-world solutions. | Journal Club: Exploring Immune Response to Diet: Vegan vs Ketogenic Ep. 38 | 09 Apr 2024 | 00:50:53
In this episode of The Metabolic Link, Victoria Field, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, and Dr. Angela Poff dive into a fascinating new paper that compares the metabolic and immune impacts of ketogenic and vegan diets in humans. The study, titled “Differential Peripheral Immune Signatures Elicited by Vegan Versus Ketogenic Diets in Humans” takes a deep dive into the multi-omic effects of these two very different dietary approaches. The researchers found that just two weeks on a ketogenic diet significantly enhanced markers of adaptive immunity, while the vegan diet was associated with increased innate immune function. The hosts unpack these findings, discussing the potential mechanisms behind the divergent immune signatures, the limitations of the short-term study design, and the need for further research. They also highlight the importance of carefully standardizing the macronutrient and micronutrient compositions of the dietary interventions to isolate the key drivers of the observed changes. Overall, this episode provides a thought-provoking look at the profound impacts that diet can have on the functioning of our immune system, setting the stage for future studies exploring the therapeutic potential of nutritional approaches. | How Allulose Aids Metabolism & Fructose Fuels Cancer | Journal Club | The Metabolic Link Ep. 30 | 19 Dec 2023 | 00:54:18
In this episode, our co-hosts Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, Dr. Angela Poff, and Victoria Field discuss two recent scientific papers on the metabolic effects of allulose and how blocking fructose intake may help fight cancer. The first paper examines how allulose consumption influences metabolic factors like appetite, blood sugar, and insulin sensitivity through the release of key gut hormones and effects on carbohydrate digestion and metabolism. The second paper reviews multiple lines of evidence linking fructose metabolism to driving cancer progression. High fructose intake may directly supply tumors with fuel and biomolecular building blocks to grow while also creating an obesity and diabetic state that triggers cancer development. The paper proposes dietary fructose restriction as a potential anti-cancer intervention. Overall, the episode illuminates cutting-edge research on sugar, diet and disease. With that said, our hosts emphasize the need for further study. In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. | Mood + Mindfulness | Journal Club | The Metabolic Link Ep. 27 | 06 Nov 2023 | 01:05:26
In this episode, our co-hosts Victoria Field, Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, and Dr. Angela Poff discuss two recent scientific papers on the potential metabolic connections to psychiatric disorders and mindfulness-based interventions. The first paper is a systematic review on the efficacy of low-carb and ketogenic diets for treating mood and anxiety disorders. They discuss the importance in defining what constitutes a low-carb or ketogenic diet in research studies. Our hosts also discuss the limited data available, with only 12 studies meeting the criteria for inclusion. However, the review indicates some positive preliminary findings for the use of these diets for conditions like bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia. The second paper is a meta-analysis examining mindfulness-based interventions for psychiatric disorders. It found mindfulness approaches were superior to non-evidence based treatments and comparable to standard therapies for conditions like anxiety and depression. Our hosts discuss the need for more research, but note the promising potential for simple lifestyle approaches like mindfulness, breathwork and nutrition to positively impact mental health. Overall, the episode highlights emerging science linking metabolic function to brain health and psychiatric wellbeing. Our hosts emphasize the need to continue conducting rigorous clinical trials in this nascent field of metabolic psychiatry and share their perspectives on implementing lifestyle interventions for optimal mental health.
