Generative AI Disruption - Eps. 9: Marketing Pricing & Product Leader, Robert Campbell15 May 202400:54:05

Key takeaways from our guest, Pricing Strategist & Product Marketing Leader, Robert Campbell:

Start by understanding how generative AI models work. There are two main types of prompts used for generative AI: imperative and declarative. Imperative prompts provide step-by-step instructions, while declarative prompts ask for a specific output. Understanding these distinctions will help you get the most out of generative AI tools.

Don't replace human creativity and judgment entirely with generative AI outputs. While generative AI can be a valuable tool, it's important to remember that it is still under development. Be aware of potential biases in the training data and the limitations of the technology.

Focus on several metrics when using generative AI:

  • Engagement metrics: Track how well different content performs (human-created vs. generative AI-created) to measure effectiveness.
  • AB Testing: Use generative AI-generated content alongside human-created content to see which performs better.
  • Traditional marketing metrics: Keep focusing on revenue generation, churn rate, and other important marketing metrics.

Generative AI Disruption - Eps. 8: AI Marketing Tech Leader, Benjamin Hoehn01 May 202400:48:22

Key takeaways from our guest, AI Marketing Tech Leader, Benjamin Hoehn:

The Importance of Curiosity: Ben emphasized that curiosity is crucial, especially with the rapid developments in generative AI. He mentioned, "It is that level of curiosity that you really need to kind of propel yourself into success."

Generative AI as a Tool for Efficiency: Ben described generative AI as creating a "straw man," or a first draft, which helps in removing the ego from initial ideas and improves operational efficiency. He said, "The machine does not care about its idea. It's just saying, based on this data set that I've observed, these are five things that you can do."

AI's Role in Disrupting Traditional Processes: Ben shared insights on how AI is changing team dynamics and processes, especially in content creation and marketing strategies. AI tools like Rytr and Grammarly are helping to produce first drafts and reduce the workload on human editors.

Risk Management in AI Adoption: Discussing the risks associated with generative AI, Ben highlighted the need for companies to establish AI policies and ensure data security. He cautioned, "It gets super risky if you're exposing PII data or anything behind your company firewall to it."

Future of AI in Marketing and Beyond: Looking forward, Ben predicted that AI will be integrated more deeply into business and marketing practices. He discussed potential new roles like a "GPT creator" who optimizes AI tools for company use, emphasizing AI's broader impact on society and industries beyond marketing.

Which Is Best For You? Agency or Client side role?20 Sep 201800:12:59

What are the differences between marketing roles on the Agency side and the Client/Brand side?

Some observations and things to consider:

Agency side roles

  • Great for internships or entry level roles - opportunity to learn a ton.

  • And be a practitioner for a particular marketing channel.

  • Great for career switchers - someone wanting to learn about marketing.

Client side roles

  • Great for exposure to breadth of learning multiple marketing channels

  • Greater collaboration with other departments within the business

  • Holistic view of how all departments and channels work together

Set Yourself Apart In 90 Days14 Aug 201800:12:01

What should be in a 90 day plan?

a) Break out your projects into 3 timeboxes -- by day 30, by day 60 and by day 90

b) Make sure to capture ‘expected outcomes’ or ‘goals’...otherwise it will not be clear if you were successful or not.

c) Focus on these three areas:

  1. People - how are you helping others & yourself develop? How are you building relationships within the organization and externally with your networks?

  2. Process - Operations. How are you helping to manage costs?  What projects can you own that help find ways for the team/company to be more productive or efficient?

  3. Performance - Measurable impact. How are you helping to drive qualitative and quantitative metrics? This should be easy for any marketing role.

If you want a copy of my 90-day plan template -- Just send me an email at erik @ themarketinghelp.co with subject line “90 Days” and I will send you a copy.

Marketing Interview Questions to Ask & Answer16 Jun 201800:09:37

I asked 100 digital marketing hiring managers, “what’s the ONE thing that negatively impacts a candidates chances of moving on or being hired”.

The overwhelmingly most popular answer was “Not having questions prepared”.

Here 3 questions you should be prepared to ASK during your interview (feel free to capture the gist of the question - phrase it in the way that works for you.):

  1. How do you find ways to continuously challenge your team to get better at what they do?
  2. How does the company address changes in the digital marketing landscape? Can you provide an example?
  3. After 90 days in this role, what metrics would we be discussing tied to success?

Here are some questions you should be prepared to ANSWER:

  1. What’s an example of a brand you think does [enter digital marketing channel] well, and why?
  2. What is a hobby you’re passionate about? How to do it?
  3. Based on what you’ve researched about our brand, what can we be doing better?

Do you have topics you want discussed on this podcast? Email me: erik (at) themarketinghelp.co

Ace Your Marketing Interview Preparation - Do These 5 Things16 Apr 201800:13:14

You can find all podcast episodes here.

1 - Research The Company.

Understand when they were founded. Who are the owners. What is their back story. Are they funded, public or private? Who do they primarily serve as clients or as partners. What is their primary product or service? What is their culture?
Check out Google, Crunchbase or Glassdoor

2 - Research The Business.

Who are their competitors? Their target audiences? What are common best practices and relevant topics for their space? Who are likely strategic partners, resellers or influencers?

3 - Research The Interview Panel.

If you’re able, get a list in advance of who you will be interviewing you. Then audit their LinkedIn profile. Get a sense for where they worked, their network, skills and accomplishments.

Leveraging this data during small talk or intros goes a long way in making a positive impression.

4- Research The Marketing Footprint.

Get a sense of what their doing and identify ways you can help.

Sign up for their newsletter. Audit their social profiles or blog posts.

See what types of ads they’re running on Moat.com.

Download BuiltWith.com to see what other tech tools they’re using on their site - split testing tools, email providers, ad networks -- This can show interview panel that you’re digging deeper than most candidates to understand how they’re approaching their marketing executions...and at least make for a good conversation point.

Use SimilarWeb.com to research their website traffic totals and inbound traffic sources. Another great source for conversation points and questions during the interview.

5 - Prepare an Outline for a 90-day plan.

Unless the company prepped you and asked for this, no one is going to expect it.

Take the liberty of outlining what you would plan to do in 90 days to help drive positive growth for their company.

Easy starting point: Make 3 columns - The role, The team, Growth/Performance.
Then list things that only you can provide under each. E.g. Under 'Role', list things like curiosity, eagerness to learn, readiness to be challenged, or a sense of humor.

Present this to the hiring manager or team at the end of the interview.

3 Factors That Matter To Marketing Role Hiring Managers08 Apr 201800:18:17

Access all podcast episodes here.

First, start by Googling your name.

What do you find? Are you seeing content that is supportive of what you’re trying to accomplish in your marketing career journey?
If not, feel free to contact me to discuss.

First Factor: Your LinkedIn Profile -

  • Over 90% of recruiters rely on the site, according to data from the
    Society of Human Resource Management.

- Do - Research best practices. Add relevant media/articles/school
projects. Use Linkedin Publish to post content relevant to your
marketing craft or skill.

- Don’t - Assume that your resume is the only career summary a hiring
manager will review.

Resources for Linkedin Profiles:

Second Factor: Your Resume -

  • One question I always get - "Should my resume be more ‘creative’ than a standard word doc template?"
  • My answer is - "It's the content of you that matters..no matter how creative the resume is."

- Do - Use this formula when summarizing your bullet points for your internship, co op or most recent marketing role.

  • “I [increased/decreased x] by [y%] over the course of [time frame] by executing [specific strategy or tactic]

  • Intern example - “I helped increase monthly leads from social media by 13%, over the course of 3 months, by researching competitor tactics and executing a sharing contest”

  • Experienced professional example - “I drove the plan that grew efficient paid media revenues, Year over Year, by executing a competitive bidding strategy & consistent conversion rate testing cadence”

- Don’t - Use an objective statement - hiring managers know you want the role..that’s why they have your resume. Use the space for a summary on how you’ve driven growth or results & can help the company.

Third Factor: Proactive Applied Learning -

  • This is largely rooted in certifications and other ancillary education or training that strengthens your marketing craft or skills.

  • Notice this isn’t just about ‘Getting certified’.

  • This Proactive Applied Learning is about having a strong balance between the "what" - certification/supplemental courses/learnings and the "how" - put them in action for client or side project.

- Do - Find the right certification / online course that best fits your marketing interests, crafts or career journey -- please consider Google Analytics as a first step.

- Don’t - Rush to get certified without having a plan on how you will implement what you’ve learned.

  • Remember, you can always stand up a free website as a testing ground for your newly found learnings. Sharing an example like that is much more appealing to a hiring manager then a list of empty certifications.

Other Certifications:

Google analytics: Popular Certification

Google Adwords: A must for paid search

Hubspot Academy: Content, Email, Sales

Facebook Blueprint: Facebook ads certification ($150)

SEO specific from MOZ: Deeper overview

Paid Search specific from WordStream: Deeper overview

Twitter Academy: Badges for completion

Basic HTML and CSS coding: Important for website and email updates

DigitalMarketer: For when you’re in your role for 1-2 years.

The 6 Career Factors That You Should Rank (1 = high priority, 6 = low priority):

  1. Balance - work/life - Ready to invest in yourself (50-60+ hrs per week) or do you need to work a side gig or play xbox?

  2. Challenge - Are you ready to be uncomfortable - learn a ton - be pushed -- or do you want to coast?

  3. Company - Are you dying to work at Google or Facebook? Or a culture-centric company w a focused mission and purpose?

  4. Location - Ready to relo? Must live close to family? Need to work remotely?

  5. Title - Must have a manager title? Believe it or not, this still matters to some.

  6. Salary - Can you live off of 35k per year or do you have certain expenses that are out of your control?

Then...

a) Review your top 3. Those should provide you with clarity on where/how you start your search.

b) Ask someone you trust to rank the same 6 factors for you. If similar = keep moving. If different = rethink your priorities..try it again next month.

Getting Annual Marketing Performance Reviews Right15 Feb 202300:25:34

Some simple truths about the annual review process:

  • You don't get promoted for simply being in your role for 'x' years
  • Any raise or promotion should not be a surprise - your manager and you should be consistently discussing your performance & expectations during 1x1s throughout the year
  • Be aware of the market/industry conditions - your company and role do not operate in a bubble (if the economy is in a downturn,  you did not sign any clients, your customer churn grew -- > don't expect a 7% raise)
  • It is a discussion - not a manager monologue or a direct report complain-session - discuss expectations, accomplishments, challenges, opportunities FROM EACH PERSON
  • You will be measured on you Performance/Skill vs Potential/Will.

Some questions to ask during your annual performance review:

  • Direct report to marketing manager:
    • What is the most challenging thing about your Role?
    • What are 3 projects I can take off your plate?
    • Can you confirm the process or path to get promoted?\
    • What are ways I can increase my salary?
  • Marketing manager to direct report:
    • Which accomplishment (personal and professional) are you most proud of?
    • What can I be doing better for you?
    • Where do you want to be - re your role -  in one year?
    • Do you understand the process for getting promoted?

Generative AI Disruption - Eps. 7: Jodie Lail from GE Healthcare23 Apr 202400:49:36

Gen AI Revolutionizes Marketing Operations: AI-powered tools offer marketers unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness in content creation, campaign optimization, and audience targeting. By leveraging AI, marketing teams can streamline processes and drive better results.

Collaboration Between Humans and Gen AI: Rather than viewing AI as a replacement for human creativity, embrace it as a collaborative tool. Maintain control over messaging and brand voice while harnessing AI to enhance productivity and innovation in marketing campaigns.

Securing Budget for Gen AI Initiatives: When seeking budgetary support for AI initiatives, focus on demonstrating quick wins and tangible ROI. Start with low-cost or free AI tools to showcase their impact before investing in larger initiatives.

Continuous Learning and Experimentation: Foster a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement within your marketing team. Encourage team members to explore new AI technologies, experiment with different approaches, and embrace a mindset of lifelong learning and innovation.

How To Talk About...Quitting In Public04 Jan 202200:20:24

One of the most popular marketing career trends is quitting in a public forum - TikTok, Instagram, Linkedin.

Jed and I discuss the two most common types of this marketing career trend -

  1. The Flamethrower - Someone that needs to publicly display dissatisfaction with their prior employer - and negative impact their personal brand in the process.
  2. The Award Speech - A marketer that publicly acknowledges a laundry list of those that have helped them - and identifies excitement towards their new employer (sometimes also tagging a list of names).

Marketers may have solid reasons to be either type.  However, first consider taking a second to validate the true value of making this type of post before proceeding -- it may help you in the long run.

How To Talk About...Your Personal Brand In Marketing Interviews08 Nov 202100:50:15

A consistent and relevant personal brand is critical for any successful marketing career.

But how do you, and should you, talk about your personal brand during a marketing interview?

You should focus on these three key areas - that will address the three most common types of questions you will be asked.

  1. What's your Personal Pitch - why you are relevant - "Why should we hire you?"
  2. Self Awareness - knowing your working style and behaviors - "What is your biggest strength or weakness?"
  3. Abilities - examples of tangible, relevant impact on projects, campaigns or program: "Tell me about time when..."

Generative AI Disruption - Eps. 5: AI Strategist, Kaarin Howard26 Mar 202401:01:09

Key takeaways from our guest, Kaarin Howard:

Leadership's Role in Embracing and Driving AI Adoption:

Kaarin touches on the critical role of marketing leadership in embracing and driving AI adoption within organizations. She suggests that leaders must not only be open to AI but actively encourage their teams to explore and integrate AI solutions. This leadership approach is essential for fostering an innovative culture that leverages AI for strategic advantage.

The Impact of AI on Marketing Team Dynamics and Structure:

Reflecting on the future of marketing teams, Kaarin speculates on the potential for AI to streamline team structures. "Will I need six copywriters? No, now I only need two," she states, indicating that AI's efficiency gains may lead to leaner, more focused teams. This shift could impact hiring strategies, team dynamics, and the overall structure of marketing departments, pushing towards a model where quality and efficiency are prioritized over quantity.
