| I Can Finally Look in the Mirror Again: Regina’s Tummy Tuck Revision Experience | 27 Aug 2024 | 00:32:15 | |
Regina had a nightmare experience after her first tummy tuck and liposuction with an unqualified surgeon elsewhere, landing in the hospital for two weeks with an abscess followed by home nursing, and then requiring a walker and cane to get around. When it came time to fix the mess, she was understandably worried. LJCSC plastic surgeon Dr. Swistun removed her dog ears, tightened and smoothed out her skin, and redid her incisions to be barely noticeable. She’s thrilled to finally be able to look in the mirror and not be reminded of all that baggage from the past. Hear how she went about researching doctors for revision surgery after her experience, how she found Dr. Swistun, and how she knew he was the one. | The Six “WOW” Cosmetic Surgeries Women Always Wish They Did Sooner | 25 Jun 2024 | 00:28:16
Regardless of your motivation, it’s totally normal to think about cosmetic procedures but not know how to get started. Plastic surgeon Dr. Diana Breister gives us an overview of the most popular body procedures for women. Ideal body trends change over time, and so do our personal preferences. Women in their 20’s and 30’s tend to do liposuction and breast augmentation, while those in their 40’s and 50’s more often consider tummy tucks and breast lifts. Plastic surgery isn’t just about feeling more confident in a bikini. It can be life-changing by improving all the concerns we face as women, from lingering effects of having children to changes in our bodies as we grow older. It takes courage, timing, and planning to go through with surgery, but once you’re through recovery, you’ll feel accomplished, empowered, and may even wish you had done it sooner. | Swollen, Bloated, and Puffy with Kathleen Lisson | 16 Aug 2022 | 00:36:41
Lymphatic massage expert Kathleen Lisson explains the important role of your ~800 lymph nodes in post-op recovery. If the lymphatic system is disrupted or overwhelmed, which can occur with plastic surgery, lymphatic massage, or manual lymphatic drainage is often recommended to help with healing and recovery. The lymphatic system is how your body processes and eliminates waste. Your immune system is part of the lymphatic system, so when a bacteria or virus enters your body, the lymphatic system produces immune cells to fight it. Manual lymphatic drainage isn’t so much a massage as it is a gentle skin stretching movement that opens up the initial lymphatic capillary and encourages the interstitial fluid to enter into the lymphatic system where waste products, fluids, and bacterias are transported away and eliminated naturally. Don’t miss Kathleen’s essential advice for anyone having plastic surgery. If you’re not in San Diego, you’ll want to hear her suggestions for getting your treatment covered by insurance and finding a qualified lymphatic massage therapist in your area. | Revision Breast Augmentation with the Internal Bra Technique: Plastic Surgeon Explains | 09 Aug 2022 | 00:20:30
If you’re disappointed that your breast implants are sagging or haven’t lasted as long as expected, the “internal bra” is a superb breast implant revision technique that uses GalaFLEX, a bioabsorbable mesh-like material to add support. Breast implants aren’t meant to last forever and at some point, our breasts sag. It happens to all of us, and we inevitably won’t have our 20-year-old breasts in our 50s. If you’ve had implants for a while, the internal bra can be included in revision surgery to support those stretched tissues back up to where they once were. Plastic surgeon Dr. John Smoot joins us to explain what the internal bra is and how it works to create a scaffolding of thicker tissue to add strength. | Patient Taylor: Surprisingly Smaller Than Expected | 02 Aug 2022 | 00:28:05
Taylor’s least favorite body part has always been her arms. Working in the medical spa at La Jolla Cosmetic, Taylor knew there were a lot of ways to approach body contouring, including those arms. She had already lost 30 lbs, and plastic surgeon Dr. Swistun motivated her to lose 15 more to ensure successful results by showing her what she might look like using special imaging software called Vectra 3D. After reaching her goal weight, Taylor moved ahead with surgery. Dr. Swistun sculpted her body with 360 lipo to her upper and lower back, full abdomen up to her bra line, arms, and thighs, followed by Renuvion to tighten everything up. Although she read about it in her pre-op booklet, Taylor was surprised to actually be that person who cries upon waking up from surgery. But the biggest surprise for Taylor, even while still early in recovery, is how much smaller she is than she expected to be. She shares her “roller coaster of emotions” as her body changed through the stages of recovery, from waking up in the recovery room through the first weeks with her new body. | Patient Kathleen: How I Got Life Flighted To My Nose Job | 26 Jul 2022 | 00:32:56
For our patient Kathleen Lisson, an accident while hiking in the desert led to a broken nose, which led her straight to Dr. Brahme for a rhinoplasty… and while he was at it, a face lift, brow lift, neck lift, chin implant, fat transfer to her cheeks, and a septoplasty to fix her deviated septum. Not everyone seeks cosmetic surgery for aesthetic reasons; sometimes it’s necessary following an accident or injury. For Kathleen, a freak accident while hiking in the desert was the catalyst that caused her to move forward with everything she’d been dreaming about. As a lymphedema therapist, Kathleen had seen the results of Dr. Brahme’s work while helping other plastic surgery patients who had seen him for facial rejuvenation. She always knew that if she decided to get any type of cosmetic surgery, he’d be the one she would trust to do it. In this episode, Kathleen tells the crazy story of how she broke her nose and ended up getting her dream face at LJC. From her perspective as a patient and a trusted professional caring for other plastic surgery patients, you won’t want to miss her expert advice for a smooth recovery. | Plastic Surgeon Breaks Down the Breast Implant Black Box Warning | 14 Jul 2022 | 00:38:03
This year, the primary concern of women researching breast implants became safety instead of cost. LJC’s own Dr. Hector Salazar-Reyes joins us to share his thoughts on breast implant safety and walk us through the FDA’s updated labeling requirements, known as the “black box warning.” With his unique perspective as a champion of patient safety, Dr. Salazar shares the real history of how patients, doctors, and industry teamed up to drive these important changes in patient education. If you’re considering breast augmentation surgery, you won’t want to miss this important conversation about what the “black box” warning includes, where you can read it, and what each of the guidelines means. Corey Dylan from San Diego’s KFBG BIG FM 100.7, tells her story about doing Ultherapy for her face and neck. At 51, she felt like her cheeks were looking jowly and knew there was no way to reverse that with skin care products. As a radio and tv professional, Corey chose Ultherapy because she knew it would allow her to be in and out of the office within a couple hours without anybody noticing she had anything done. | Ultherapy: The Non-Surgical Facelift | 08 Jul 2022 | 00:21:03
If you aren’t quite ready for a facelift, Ultherapy is a great way to delay surgery by lifting and tightening your face and neck. In the first of a two part series about Ultherapy non surgical skin tightening, Anh Bridgewater gives us the full rundown of what Ultherapy is, what it does, how long it takes to see results, and who is a good candidate. How does Ultherapy work? Microfocused ultrasound is delivered to the tissue layers to stimulate collagen regeneration. Results appear slowly over time, as your body works to stimulate the collagen and tighten up the skin. Don’t miss part 2 with BIG FM 100.7 radio personality Corey Dylan, who just had Ultherapy at LJC and shares her experience. | Gabriela’s Dream Body: From WTF Did I Do To 100/100 Would Do This Again | 14 Jun 2022 | 00:28:47
Eight years ago, Gabriela came to LJC for a mommy makeover and she was ecstatic with her results. Last summer, a friend with gorgeous results from 360 lipo inspired her to return for a consultation with Dr. Swistun to see if he could help her get the dream body she always wanted. 12 weeks after surgery, Gabriela joins us to talk about her experience having 360 Lipo to her abdomen and upper back and Renuvion skin tightening, followed by a BBL, and fat transfer to her chin and temples. Although she had a low BMI and very little fat, she was dreaming about having that hourglass figure and only wanted to do 360 lipo. When Dr. Swistun suggested moving the fat to her backside, she was initially skeptical and afraid of it looking too obvious. If you’re looking to get a BBL, Gabriela’s advice to you is to be aware that the road to recovery is tough, but LJC helps prepare you, and once you start seeing results it will be worth it all. | I’m a Plastic Surgeon, I had Halo Laser Treatment and Here’s What Happened (Part 3 of 3) | 09 Jun 2022 | 00:17:32
We catch up with Dr. Luke Swistun a week after his broadband light (BBL) & Halo laser resurfacing treatment to hear about his treatment experience and recovery process. Dr. Swistun tells us about how his treatment experience compared to his expectations, describing the pain level as “tolerable pins and needles.” At LJC we offer ProNox to our patients, also known as laughing gas, and Dr. Swistun describes this feeling as surreal, because you can make conscious decisions while simultaneously being removed from the experience. Dr. Swistun says it feels like a sunburn for a couple hours, but wore off quickly. The effect of the procedure that he found to be the most lasting and noticeable was the swelling, especially around his eyes. | Liquid Rhinoplasty: The Non-Surgical Nose Job [Part 3 of #RiedlerKnowsNoses] | 17 May 2022 | 00:12:19
You might think the only option for reshaping your nose is to undergo a surgical rhinoplasty. But there’s another way to change the shape of your nose that isn’t so serious. Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kiersten Riedler educates us about the liquid rhinoplasty, known as the “non-surgical nose job.” In this procedure, an injectable filler like Juvederm Voluma XC is used to change the shape or contour of the nose. Deep indentations or depressions above the hump can be filled in, camouflaging any irregularities. You may see the word “filler” and think it would make your nose larger, but adding filler along the center of a wide nose bridge can actually make it appear thinner. A liquid rhinoplasty can also correct a crooked nose, asymmetric nostrils, and more. The best candidates for the liquid rhinoplasty are people with mild issues, such as humps along the bridge, or minor asymmetries. If you want to “test drive” changing the shape of your nose before taking the permanent step of having surgery, a non-surgical rhinoplasty is a great option to try beforehand. | Septoplasty + Septorhinoplasty: Combining Deviated Septum Surgery and Cosmetic Nose Surgery to Breathe Better (and Look Great!) [Part 2 of | 10 May 2022 | 00:19:00
Breathing through your nose is one of those basic things you take for granted until you can’t do it anymore. Guest host Laura Cain talks with facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kiersten Riedler about nose surgery, specifically the septoplasty and rhinoplasty surgeries she does to fix the inside and outside of the nose. If you’re used to going through life with restricted nasal passages, you might not even realize how much better it could be. The septoplasty is surgery to straighten or correct a deviated septum, while a rhinoplasty is surgery to change the shape of the nose for either cosmetic or functional purposes. If someone wants to change the inside of their nose as well as its outside structure, it can be done in two surgeries, but it’s preferred to do them together (septorhinoplasty) because it’s less time under anesthesia, less recovery, and easier on the surgeon. Laura asks Dr. Riedler all the questions people are too afraid to ask, from the impact of past cocaine use on the inside of her nose to her honest thoughts on Michael Jackson’s nose. Even though nose surgery looks dramatic on tv shows like Botched, it doesn’t require a hospital stay and Dr. Riedler reassures us that it’s not that scary and you can go home the same day. Dr. Riedler discusses the ins and outs of recovery after a rhinoplasty and septoplasty, where to find reliable information about nose procedures, the revision rate for nose procedures, septal perforation caused by addiction and whether it is fixable, and more. | Rhinoplasty: Everything You Need to Know About Changing Your Nose [Part 1 of #RiedlerKnowsNoses] | 26 Apr 2022 | 00:28:55
Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kiersten Riedler answers important questions about noses and rhinoplasty, like do your nose and ears really keep growing as you age? How old do you have to be to have rhinoplasty? What should you do if you get hit in the nose with a baseball? Although no two noses are the same and no two rhinoplasty procedures are the same, the approaches to surgery are fairly standard. Dr. Riedler explains the open approach, in which an incision is made externally between and inside the nostrils, and the closed approach, which consists of more extensive internal incisions, but none on the outside. Many people worry about recovery following nose surgery, and the most common complaint Dr. Riedler hears from patients after surgery may surprise you (hint: it’s not pain). On this episode, Dr. Riedler shares what you need to know about cosmetic rhinoplasty and what to do if your rhinoplasty is needed as a result of an injury. | Meet the Team: Ruth D., RN, BSN | 08 Mar 2022 | 00:32:51
Nurse Ruth has served patients at LJC for almost twenty years, mostly as Dr. Lori Saltz’s nurse and right hand. Ruth’s earliest introduction to LJC was through her father who served the practice as an accountant in the early years. After nursing school, she worked for several years as an emergency room and urgent care nurse before landing a position at LJC at age 27. She loved LJC so much, the rest is history! After working alongside now-retired plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Roark, she had an opportunity to join Dr. Lori Saltz’s team. It only took a moment for Ruth and Dr. Lori Saltz to figure out they loved to care for patients together, and nearly two decades later they are still a tremendous team who read each other’s minds and finish each other’s sentences. Hear Ruth’s candor and openness as she talks about her own cosmetic surgery experiences and describes her day-to-day work life with Dr. Lori Saltz in the unique way that only she can. Aesthetic injector Julia shares her deep expertise with plumping and reshaping the lips with fillers, which of the Juvederm & Restylane products are her favorites, and why you shouldn’t be afraid of getting your lips injected if you’re in the care of a trained, experienced injector. She covers the latest trends including the Instagram-famous Russian lip technique (spoiler alert, it’s not a thing), the “lip flip,” how to avoid the “duck lips” look, and the refreshing new direction toward natural definition instead of just volume. Hear why Juvederm Volbella, Juvederm Vollure, and Restylane Kysse are Julia’s favorite products to use and how she uses them differently to achieve the results her patients are asking for. She takes us through potential side effects, the ways she helps “swellers” avoid swelling, and the secret trick the LJC team uses to stop bruising before it starts. You’ll learn what a typical lip filler treatment will cost, things to avoid the night before your appointment and the day after, and what to expect during the procedure. Julia answers the number one question about lip injections and details the innovative options available at LJC for preventing pain, including ProNox, numbing cream, nerve blocks, or the handheld vibrating device used to distract your nerves from sending a pain signal. Whether you are just considering lip injections or don’t know what you’d do without your routine lip filler fix, this conversation with Julia is essential listening for anyone interested in lip injections.
