Indigenous Wine Grape Varieties to Israel, featuring Professor Shivi Drori [The Jewish Drinking Show episode #183]

Episode 183

mardi 4 novembre 2025Duration 40:20

Introduction
Grapes in Israel for the use of wine are nothing new. While it had been known that they were certainly ancient, especially as we read of the delegation of scouts in the 13th chapter in the book of Numbers finding massive bunches of grapes, recent work by Professor Elyashiv "Shivi" Drori has uncovered dozens of previously undocumented indigenous varieties of wine grapes in Israel, about which he shares on the 183rd episode of The Jewish Drinking Show.

Biography of Guest
Prof. Drori, a professor of chemical engineering and biotechnology at Ariel University, heads the university’s Samson Family Wine Research Center, Israel’s premier academic institute dedicated to grapevine and wine research. In addition to his research credentials as an agronomist, plant geneticist and oenologist, Drori is also the chief winemaker at Gva’ot Winery, a boutique producer whose wines have earned global acclaim.

Shul Kiddushes, featuring Prof. Michal Shaul [The Jewish Drinking Show, episode #174]

Episode 174

jeudi 1 mai 2025Duration 36:51

Intro
Having previously welcomed Professor Michal Shaul to discuss kiddush clubs on the 124th episode of The Jewish Drinking Show, Prof. Shaul has since published an article, "Happy Hour: The Communal Kiddush and Its Roles in the Synagogue World", Jewish Culture and History, Vol. 25, Iss. 3 (2024) (published online in October 2023), as well as a Hebrew article on kiddush at shul, "הציבור מוזמן לקידוש לאחר התפילה': הקידוש כמחולל וכמשקף את קהילת בית הכנסת' 'Kiddush to Follow' - The Kiddush as Creator and Reflector of the 'Synagogue Community'", כנישתא, Vol. 5 (2024). Surprisingly, despite multiple episodes of The Jewish Drinking Show, this episode is the first to focus on kiddush in synagogues.

Biography of Guest
Prof. Shaul is a senior lecturer in the Department of History at Herzog College. She won the Shazar prize for research in Jewish History (2016). Her book Holocaust Memory in Ultraorthodox Society in Israel was published in Hebrew (Yad Ben-Zvi and Yad Vashem, 2014) and English (Indiana University Press, 2020). Her work about different aspects of the religious commemoration of the Holocaust has been published in various journals, e.g., Yad Vashem Studies, Jewish Culture and History, Journal of Israeli History, and many more. During 2016-2018, she was a scholar-in-residence at The Melbourne Holocaust Center. While living in Melbourne, Prof. Shaul was exposed to the central role of the communal kiddush in shul and started to study it, yielding the first chapter of her Kiddush study project on kiddush clubs.

Medieval Rabbis on Gentile Wine, featuring Prof. David Freidenreich

Episode 83

mercredi 10 novembre 2021Duration 46:36

With gentile wine being seen as off-limits in the times of the Mishnah and Talmud, how did post-Talmudic rabbis advise on this matter? Joining the 83rd episode of The Jewish Drinking Show is Professor David Freidenreich.

Prof. Freidenreich is the Pulver Family Professor of Jewish Studies at Colby College, where he serves as director of the Jewish Studies program and associate director of the Center for Small Town Jewish Life. After receiving a B.A. from Brandeis University, he earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University and rabbinic ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary. His award-winning first book, Foreigners and Their Food: Constructing Otherness in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Law, explores attitudes toward adherents of foreign religions expressed in ancient and medieval laws about sharing food.

For those interested in gaining a sense of how the early rabbis dealt with gentile [libation] wine, you can check out episode #71 of The Jewish Drinking Show, “Gentile Libation Wine (יין נסך) In The Mishnah And Tosefta”, featuring Prof. Avram Shannon.
