CLUBLAND STORIES September: Matt Fitz damaged driver, Advice given in the Creator Classic playoff, Sahith's bunker issue, Call 'Fore' if a ball is hurtling towards someone - THE GRQ PODCAST EP122

GRQOTW121 Answer:

Andy is lying five after hitting his ball that was Out Of Bounds. He has to go back to where he played his second shot from.

GRQOTW122 Question:

In a stroke play competition, Andrea hits her tee shot into a heavily-wooded area. She properly plays a provisional ball under Rule 18.3b and it comes to rest in the fairway. She searches for her original ball for one minute and declares it 'lost'. She walks over to her provisional ball and accidentally kicks it. She replaces it, but before she plays it and within 3 minutes of her starting searching, a spectator finds her original ball. She lifts the provisional ball and plays the original ball to the green. She takes two putts and tees off on the next hole. What is her score for the hole?GOLFRULES QUESTIONS MERCHANDISEGet yourself a Roo&Coo polo: https://golfrulesquestions.myspreadshop.com/.DO YOU HAVE A RULES OF GOLF QUESTION:Email - golfrules.questions@gmail.comWANT TO TEST YOUR RULES OF GOLF KNOWLEDGE?Head to: www.golfrulesquestions.comWANT A QUICK GOLF RULES REFERENCEHead to Instagram: @golfrules_questions (https://www.instagram.com/golfrules_questions/?hl=en)OR JOIN THE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYhttps://www.facebook.com/golfrulesquestionsLISTEN TO THE GRQ PODCAST ON APPLE OR SPOTIFYClick here: https://anchor.fm/golfrules-questionsSUBSCRIBE to GOLFRULES QUESTIONS https://bit.ly/2I8KrVH for all your golf rules#GolfRules #GolfRulesQuestions #blakey

CLUBLAND STORIES August: using your partners club, are strokes are given in a playoff, the area underneath a bridge, handing a ball into the hole, & playing from an NPZ- THE GRQ PODCAST EP12115 Aug 202400:37:51

Episode 121 of the GolfRules Questions podcast is back to the OG of Rules Questions - ClubLand Stories

Today’s episode features a greensomes question about using the partner’s club, whether strokes are given in a match play playoff, what is the area underneath a bridge, hitting a ball into the hole with your hand, and playing from a No Play Zone, we also have the GRQOTW for 121 that you can try wrap your head around.

GRQOTW120:Eight strokes. Andy the Average Golfer played a ball that was dropped under free relief (which wasn't available to him) and as he did not have intention to drop that ball as an unplayable (even though that is where he arrived at after finding out the free relief wasn't available), he has played from a wrong place. He was required to drop a ball with the intention for it to be an unplayable, not just play one that was dropped previously by him and in the correct relief area.GRQOTW121:

Andy the Average Golfer is playing a stroke round at Wombat Hills.  On the 9th hole, he hits his 2nd shot way left towards the driving range.

Among all of the other golf balls, he finds his ball and plays his 3rd stroke towards the green.  After 1 chip and 3 putts, he holes out.

As he is waiting at the back of the 9th green, waiting for others to finish the hole, a staff member walks down and advises Andy that the driving range is OOB.

Andy asks the staff member what that means.  Neither know, so they approach you as a member of the Committee for assistance.  What is Andy the Average Golfer's score for the 9th hole?GOLFRULES QUESTIONS MERCHANDISEGet yourself a Roo&Coo polo: https://golfrulesquestions.myspreadshop.com/.DO YOU HAVE A RULES OF GOLF QUESTION:Email - golfrules.questions@gmail.comWANT TO TEST YOUR RULES OF GOLF KNOWLEDGE?Head to: www.golfrulesquestions.comWANT A QUICK GOLF RULES REFERENCEHead to Instagram: @golfrules_questions (https://www.instagram.com/golfrules_questions/?hl=en)OR JOIN THE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYhttps://www.facebook.com/golfrulesquestionsLISTEN TO THE GRQ PODCAST ON APPLE OR SPOTIFYClick here: https://anchor.fm/golfrules-questionsSUBSCRIBE to GOLFRULES QUESTIONS https://bit.ly/2I8KrVH for all your golf rules#GolfRules #GolfRulesQuestions #blakey

Four Seasons in One Day | THE GRQ PODCAST EPISODE 3027 Feb 202100:43:41

GRQotW29
Are you permitted to watch a video on YouTube (say George Gankas or Me&My Golf) during a round to obtain swing tips?

This caught a few, as like me, I would have assumed this wouldn’t be permitted, but Rule 4.3a(3) & (4) only restricts information gathered during the round. What is allowed is using information that was gathered before the round, such as swing tips. But consideration to other players and no delaying of play unreasonably.

Genesis Invitational

Patrick Cantplay-Fast embedded ball in bunker
On the 6th hole at the Genesis Invitational, the affably-known ‘donut’ hole, because there is a bunker in the middle of the green, Patrick Cantlay’s tee shot is embedded in the lip above the bunker. A referee is requested and Patrick is taken through the relief process.

Wind stops play - https://youtu.be/VBHfHo6tzf8

During round 3 of the Genesis Invitational, the wind was so strong that balls were moving on the green and play was suspended. It was certainly timely for some, but not all.

DJ movable obstruction - https://youtu.be/mtP6YL6ACZY

Easy ruling for DJ. So easy, he didn’t even require a referee, just picked up the utility box that was housing cables and moved it himself before pitching out sideways.

Matt Wolff moves ball on putting green - https://youtu.be/RtmBmd8ddfs

This is number one on my favourite rulings of the year so far. Matty Wolff playing in the WGC Mexico (played in Florida), accidentally taps his ball sideways on a practice swing when his ball is at rest on the green. It doesn’t count as a putt because Matt had no intention of hitting the ball, and thus the ball was replaced for no penalty.

After the player hits their ball into the green, it stops and comes to rest on the green. As the player is walking up to the green, suddenly the irrigation system turns on and water runs across the grass, down the green and moves the ball. Does the ball need to be replaced, or is the player permitted to play it from where it is now at rest?

Ball at Rest Moved by Player |THE GRQ PODCAST EP2917 Feb 202100:51:13

We start off with the GolfRules Question of the Week answer for Episode 28

Are you permitted to use rock-paper-scissors as a legitimate way of determining who plays next in a match, if you are unable to determine who is furthest from the hole?

Yes, rock-paper-scissors is a random method that can be used. Other random methods can also be used, like a coin toss, or you could throw an iron in the air and see which side up it lands - face or back. Alternatively you could just agree for one player to play.

Blakey had an interesting story when he was called in as a referee for the Charley Hoffman vs Brendan Steele match at the Dell Matchplay in 2018.

We were inundated with Rule 9.4 rulings this week at the AT&T PGA Tour event at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill golf courses.

Firstly during Round 3 - Maverick McNealy https://youtu.be/iZ_eKA2SFWs

And then on the first hole during Round 4 - Russell Knox https://youtu.be/yM4DmT7K-wk

Both players were penalised one stroke, although the exact same ruling wasn’t given by the referees at the time. Russell’s was handed to him after playing the 4th hole.

We cleared up an email question from Jwonghen, and encourage everyone to send in emails for questions they want to know the answer to.

If the lie of your ball is altered, are you permitted to place the ball closer to the hole?
And if your ball won’t come to rest after you place/replace it, how far away can you then move your ball to get it to stay at rest? Say it was on a steep slope.

Rossco and Blakey reminisce on the 25th anniversary of the famous golf movie - Happy Gilmore. It certainly has brought golf shops a lot of business from those who try to replicate the famous swing - including Blakey.

Blakey has created the video scenarios, and has promised a re-release, and a whole podcast episode dedicated to Happy Gilmore imbroglios.

The Background Bingo’s were discussed with Andrew Millar back on top of the podium, guessing both Spyglass Hill, and Craigielaw golf courses.

This week will be a little trickier for all punters, but both are in Australia.

We tackle some serious listener questions and one is a real "ding dong" |THE GRQ PODCAST EP2811 Feb 202100:56:51

Episode 28 Show Notes

Is Mrs Blake " Blakeing the Rules" or is Blakey confused by his mum

The GolfRules Question of the Week Episode 27 was an absolute doozy that caught many by surprise.

When a player hits their original ball beside another ball in the general area, and they can’t tell which one is which, then they have a lost ball on their hands. However, when the ball is known or virtually certain to have gone into a movable obstruction, such as a player’s golf bag. Then the player can proceed under Rule 15.2b for no penalty.

Listener Question #1
Webbo (Andrew Webster) from the UK,  hit us up with a listener question a month ago, and must have had a crystal ball in his possession. He was asking about embedded balls, and lo-and-behold, we covered it last week after Reed-Gate#423.
Yes, a ball can be embedded on the bounce, BUT only if you have reasonable evidence that it happened that way.
No you are not permitted to take free relief for a ball embedded in sand in the rough, but Rossco and Blakey haven’t quite figured out what the cleanest definition of sand is. We think it’s where no plants/grass is growing.

Listener Question #2

The mum of podcaster GolfRules Questions hits the wave-lengths with a very tricky situation.
Two players get to their balls on the green of the 9th hole and realise that the balls they have found on the 9th are although the balls they hit off the tee of the 9th hole, are not the balls that they started the 8th hole with. The pair of ladies then declares they are taking a penalty and go back to the tee, thinking that is the way to resolve it. Blakey explains many different scenarios, trying to make assumptions to get to many answers.

Background Bingo
The patronage of background bingo enthusiasts is up 300% since the solo Mr Andrew Millar was dominating. Last week's courses were Carne Golf Club, Belmullet Co Mayo  and Clearwater Golf Club, New Zealand. This week both Rossco and Blakey have ventured to the Northern Hemisphere, can you guess where their backgrounds are?
GolfRules Question of the Week - Episode 28
When two balls are an equal distance from the flagstick, are you and your opponent permitted to use paper-rock-scissors as a legitimate way to determine who will play first?

Patrick Reed the Rules - The P Reed EP | THE GRQ PODCAST EP2702 Feb 202101:02:48

Episode 27 – Patrick Reed the Rules

GRQotW Ep 26 Answer: If two balls in motion after separate strokes from different bunkers, hit each other when running across the green, what is the procedure?

Patrick Reed wins under a cloud, but was it a storm in a teacup

Patrick Reed hit his ball out of a bunker short left of the 14th green at Torrey Pines during the 3rd round of the Farmers Insurance Open. He got up to his ball, and proceeded under Rule 16.4 because he reasonably believed that their ball was embedded in the general area. After marking, and lifting his ball to inspect whether his ball was indeed embedded, he then called for a referee to confirm his assessment. However, many people thought this was very well rehearsed act, and that he had created any ball mark that was there, because it was hard to believe that his ball that had bounced, and come to rest in its pitch mark in the thick rough.

Then Patrick has another incident with his ball on the green

During the 4th round of the Farmers Insurance Open, Patrick replaced his ball on the green on the 16th hole, and lifted his ball-marker. The ball was at rest, but then moved. Patrick then calls for a referee. The referee lets him know that because he is on the green, the ball owns that spot. Only if Patrick makes a stroke or takes an unplayable would the ball then have a new position.

https://youtu.be/NhzEBNGi0Mw

Brooks ball ends up in a shoe, but he takes relief and is still standing on a path

Brooks hits his drive into a camera-man’s shoe on the 16thhole of the North Course. This shoe is on the back on a cart that is parked on a cart-path. So Brooks can choose which condition to take free relief from. He can either take relief from the movable obstruction (the shoe), or the immovable obstruction (the cart path). He ended up taking relief from the shoe, and this is why he was permitted to stand on the path when playing the shot. If he had taken relief from the cart path, he would have had to take complete relief from the path.

https://youtu.be/N2yYAbT9vbA

Viktor Hovland can’t get his ball at rest to sit

Viktor Hovland hit his ball left of the 14thgreen during the 4th round, and then took lateral relief from the red penalty area. He dropped and then re-dropped his ball because it never came to rest within the relief area. He then had to try and place it twice on the spot where it first hit the ground in the relief area, but it still wouldn’t stay at rest, so Viktor had to then proceed under Rule 14.2e and place his ball at the nearest spot, no nearer the hole, where the ball would stay at rest.

https://youtu.be/OB-Ck8SrL-M

Background Bingo

GRQotW Ep 27 Question: A player sculls/skinny’s/knifes his ball over the green and into his cart. The player’s all saw and heard the ball hit the cart, but are unable to find it in there after a quick search. Then the player sees what looks to be his ball in the open pocket of his golf bag, just to realise that the exact same model and make golf balls (Taylormade TPS5 white) from the same sleeve are in there. So here is player A looking at three of the same balls, and not being able to tell which one was the one that he had hit from over the other side of the green. What is the ruling?

Want Some Advice...Don't Hand It Out For Free | THE GRQ PODCAST EP2629 Jan 202100:45:18

Blakey & Rossco unpack a few 'what-ifs' in Episode 26.

Loose Impediments near balls in the fairway - did you see the recent European Tour event (Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship)? Jorge CAMPILLO's ball came to rest against a loose impediment in the fairway. That loose impediment was an unreplaced divot. Jorge had three choices:
Play it as it lies, take an unplayable for a penalty of one stroke, or try and move the loose impediment. The only issue with the last move is that if the player causes the ball to move, the player will incur a one stroke penalty and need to replace the ball.

The GRQotW for Episode 25, there is no free relief from the spray of a sprinkler.

Marcela from @GirlFriendsGuidetoGolf was kind enough to ask a question about players who proceed incorrectly under the Rules.
Would you want to accept a trophy that you knew you had won without playing by the Rules??

Then we delve into the very often broken Rules in club golf of advice. So what is advice? And when is a penalty attached?
Any verbal comment or action (such as showing what club was just used to make a stroke) that is intended to influence a player.
But advice does not include public information.
A penalty is attached when you ask for, or give advice. This is not limited to verbal communication.

Lastly, we provide another GRQotW for you to wrap your head around and come up with an answer:
Rossco and Blakey are both fast players and both have bunker shots to contend with, and as they are in different bunkers and neither can see the other, they both think it is their turn to play. They play at the same time and the balls collide on the green, before settling about 10cm away from where the collision happened. Player C saw the whole thing play out. What is the ruling?

Finally we get to IVORs and Background Bingo.

Thank you and hit us up with your questions and scenarios.

Santa's Top 6 Tips to Help Speed Up Play | THE GRQ PODCAST EP2227 Dec 202001:02:26

The Pace of Play Episode 22

GolfRules Question of the Week Ep 21 - What is the ruling when air from a blower moves your ball at rest?

Rossco's team-member question: Adam was on his downswing when another ball distracted him, causing him to shank his shot, does he get a free replay?

Big P's Question - What can a Rules Official do to stop slow play?

Santa's Top 6 Tips to Help Speed Up Play

1. Be Aware When It Is Your Turn to Play.

2. Let Others Know When It Is Their Turn to Play.

3. Walk and Talk - If you want to have a conversation, do it whilst you are walking down the fairway or towards the green. Not at the tee, not huddled together in the fairway when someone should be hitting.

4. Don't Waste Time of the Green - Be At Your Ball and Ready to Play. Don't Wait Until Someone Hits Their Shot to Go to Your Ball (unless you are on their line of play).

5. Practice Swings Waste Time - If you want to have a practice swing, do so when it isn't your turn to play. Pro Tip - they don't help your score.

6. Play a Provisional Ball if Your Ball Could be Lost Outside a Penalty Area and/or Out of Bounds.

However, Andy was supposed to drop the ball instead of place it. And as the question mentions that the ball didn't come to rest on the exact spot on which it was supposed to be placed, Andy's ball is in a wrong place, and he gets penalised a general penalty when he makes a stroke at it.The 8 talent strokes + two penalty strokes = 10.Episode 112GUEST: Trevor HerdenTournament Director of the Australian Open and other Golf Australia championshipsHe only started playing golf when he was 27, but got himself in managing the Otago Men’s Team. Then moved on to caddie for one of New Zealand’s premier golfers - Greg Turner around Europe and Australia. But his referee and TD career all started when he was offered a job as assistant tournament director at the PGA Tour of Australasia. At the 1990 Palm Meadows Cup, Trevor had the awkward situation of disqualifying Greg Norman, who was leading the tournament after two rounds. In 1995 he had to disqualify Nick Faldo, who was leading the tournament in Bali.Trevor gave a thorough insight into what it means to be a Tournament Director, and how refereeing skills are vitaly important, but the tournament starts six months prior.GRQOTW 113:In a stroke-play competition, Player A hits their tee shot into a heavily-wooded area. They properly play a provisional ball under Rule 18.3b and it comes to rest in the fairway. They search for their original ball for one minute and declare it "lost". They walk over to their provisional ball and accidentally kick it, they replace it, but before they play it and within 3 minutes of starting search, a spectator finds their original ball. They lift the provisional ball and play the original ball to the green. They take two putts and tee off on the next hole. The Longest Day - Joey Deaker and I are embarking on the ultimate test of golf. To play 72 holes in one day.
Please show your support by donating here: https://www.longestday.org.au/fundraisers/caniborrowsomeballs

Listener Question - What does Point of Maximum Available Relief mean?

The reference point for taking free relief from an abnormal course condition in a bunker (Rule 16.1c) or on the putting green (Rule 16.1d) when there is no nearest point of complete relief.
It is the estimated point where the ball would lie that is:

  • Nearest to the ball’s original spot, but not nearer the hole than that spot,
  • In the required area of the course, and
  • Where that abnormal course condition least interferes with the stroke the player would have made from the original spot if the condition was not there.

GUEST: Graeme Scott, currently Senior Tournament Officer, including Tournament Director for many PGA Tour of Australia competitions, speaks about his time on Tour - THE GRQ PODCAST EP12022 Jul 202401:21:47

In episode 120, Stuart chats with Graeme Scott who has extensive experience in professional golf, including at the highest levels, refereeing at 15 majors and at tournaments all around the world.
Scotty regales many of his experiences with players at various tournaments, and talks about what it takes to be a good Referee.
Stuart then finishes the podcast with the latest GRQOTW.

GRQOTW120:
Andy the Average Golfer is playing a stroke round at Wombat Hills.  On the 17th hole, Andy plays his tee shot way left and after a brief search, he finds his ball, however it is right next to stone carved Wombat statue, which the Committee has deemed an integral object.
The statue interferes with his area of intended swing, so after advising Danni the D Grade Golfer, his marker, that he will take free relief, he identifies the NPCR and drops another ball into a 1 club length relief area.
Stuart walks over and tells Andy that the statue is an integral object and there is no free relief, so he must correct the mistake. Accordingly, Andy properly identifies a two club length relief area from the original ball, which has not been moved, in order to take unplayable ball relief.  He realises the dropped ball is within the unplayable ball relief area.  He then plays the dropped ball which lands on the green.  He takes three putts to hole out, and reports a score of 6 to Danni (5 strokes and 1 penalty stroke for the unplayable).
Before submitting his scorecard, Andy the Average Golfer asks you, as a member of the Committee, to confirm his score for the 17th hole.  What is his score for the 17th hole?

Stories From the Tour, including rabbit holes, sprinker boxes, the three minute search time, and mounds of dirt. As well as a couple of ClubLand Stories and the GRQOTW - THE GRQ PODCAST EP108

You are listening to Ep 108 of the GolfRules Questions Podcast, and in this episode Podcast Man of the People McPhee talks about a lot of rules situations from the last few weeks on Tour. Including sprinkler boxes, an original and provisional ball in the same area, and rabbit holes. We also have a few clubland stories from the real people, and of course our golfrules question of the week to answer.GRQOTW107:

Andy incurs no penalty for accidentally causing his ball to move whilst simulating the act of a stroke to determine whether he has interference.

Podcast 'Man of the People' McPhee takes us through a few of his latest refereeing jaunts, at WPS Cobram and WPS Rosebud, where the winner was one person - 22 year old Kazuma Kobori from New Zealand.

Topics spoken about:

- Dropping Zones

- Yellow Penalty Areas

- Sprinkler Boxes that is in the way

- Medical timeouts for wasp stings

- Playing two balls OR just figuring out what the actual Rule is.

ClubLand stories from Colin and Feather Duster:

- pretending to play left-handed to try get a better lie

- believing a accidental movement of the ball from a practice swing counts as a stroke

GRQOTW 108:

Playing in a stroke round at Wombat Hills, Andy the Average Golfer has a 12yr old caddie, as part of a school program.

He is playing the driveable par 4 5th hole, and he plays his 2nd shot to the green however it goes too far and over the green towards a red penalty area. As Andy arrives behind the green, he finds his caddie, who had walked ahead, standing there near the red line, laughing with some of his friends.

Andy the Average Golfer enquires about his ball and discovers that his caddie had deliberately kicked his ball as it was approaching the penalty area, which kept it out.

Andy estimates the spot where the ball would have come to rest in the penalty area, based on a brief conversation with his caddie and friends. He drops a ball inside the PA based on that estimation. He then decides to take penalty area relief and drops his ball again outside the PA. Andy holes out in four more strokes.

What is Andy the Average Golfer's score for the hole?

The ball that was found after three minutes is lost either way, and therefore can not be used at all.Firstly, we cover a few Clubland Stories:- Mr Roberts wants to know what happens when a struck ball doesn't make its way out of a Red Penalty Area. This comes under Rule 17.2.- Colin wants to know if he proceeded correctly when his ball was stuck up a tree. He dropped within two club-lengths of where the ball was, and this was under Rule 19.2.- Mr Roberts goes again with another tricky one and Blakey and Podcast disagree on what spray foam is deemed to be. But they do agree Mary was able to get some free relief.- Chip gives us a situation that is probably pretty common in Clubland, where a player tries to play a provisional ball for a ball that most likely went into a penalty area.GRQOTW 106 - Big P has hit his tee shot into the red penalty area running down the right side of the 14th hole. After two minutes of searching, he finds and identifies his ball. He makes a stroke at the ball and only advances it 3m. Frustrated, he makes another stroke at it from inside the PA moving it very little and makes another stroke. Very frustrated, he says he is returning to the teeing area to start the hole again.Despite some objections from others in the group, he returns to the teeing area, tees up a ball and makes a stroke, and finishes the hole. There are no players behind waiting to hit.How many penalty strokes must Big P add to his hole score?..GOLFRULES QUESTIONS MERCHANDISEGet yourself a Roo&Coo polo: https://golfrulesquestions.myspreadshop.com/.DO YOU HAVE A RULES OF GOLF QUESTION:Email - golfrules.questions@gmail.comWANT TO TEST YOUR RULES OF GOLF KNOWLEDGE?Head to: www.golfrulesquestions.comWANT A QUICK GOLF RULES REFERENCEHead to Instagram: @golfrules_questions (https://www.instagram.com/golfrules_questions/?hl=en)OR JOIN THE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYhttps://www.facebook.com/golfrulesquestionsLISTEN TO THE GRQ PODCAST ON APPLE OR SPOTIFYClick here: https://anchor.fm/golfrules-questionsSUBSCRIBE to GOLFRULES QUESTIONS https://bit.ly/2I8KrVH for all your golf rules#GolfRules #GolfRulesQuestions #blakey

The fact that the original was then found, makes no difference as the original ball was lost after the three minute search time had elapsed. The Asian Tour held a Stage 1 Q School event at Mt Derrimut Golf & Community Club last week, of which Blakey was the Tournament Director. Podcast McPhee also assisted as a referee.Prior to the start of the players arriving, Jeff Ward - the chief referee, Doug O’Keeffe - assistance Tournament Director and Blakey set up the course for the tournament.Podcast took us through a situation where a player ‘cowboy-dropped’ his ball when putting a ball into play after his original ball had gone Out Of Bounds. Podcast was able to step in and assist the player in correcting their drop, and thus saving a certain penalty.Podcast also gave us a run-down on a few rulings he had at a recent DPWT qualifying school that was also held in Melbourne, or more specifically down at Rosebud Country Club. There was a situation with a cut ball, of which Podcast provided the player a ‘yes, you can replace your ball for free’ response. Then Blakey showed a picture he had received very recently, of a ball that had almost split in half, and the important word there is almost, as the ball was still attached and from all accounts still in one piece. Being in one piece just meant that the player could replace their ball on the spot where it had come to rest. Whereas had the ball split into pieces, even if just two pieces, the player must cancel the stroke, replace a ball on the previous spot and then play again. Finally, an absolute beauty of a ruling when a player hit his ball over the back of the green, or so he thought. He searched for three minutes before heading back to hit another ball. Just as he was chipping on for what could have been a five, his original ball was found in the hole, to which Podcast delivered the good news that he had made an eagle. His second ball did not count, as his hole was already over.GRQOTW101In an individual stroke play event, Andy the Average Golfer hooks his tee shot left towards a red penalty area on the 3rd hole at Wombat Hills. His group searches for around 1 minute in the thick grass outside the PA and frustrated, Andy drops a ball using lateral relief from the red penalty area, even though it is not known or virtually certain to be in the PA. He is about to play his next stroke with the dropped ball, when someone else finds his original ball in the thick grass outside the PA, well within the 3 minutes of search time. Which ball must Andy play and are there any penalty strokes?.GOLFRULES QUESTIONS MERCHANDISEGet yourself a Roo&Coo polo: https://golfrulesquestions.myspreadshop.com/.DO YOU HAVE A RULES OF GOLF QUESTION:Email - golfrules.questions@gmail.comWANT TO TEST YOUR RULES OF GOLF KNOWLEDGE?Head to: www.golfrulesquestions.comWANT A QUICK GOLF RULES REFERENCEHead to Instagram: @golfrules_questions (https://www.instagram.com/golfrules_questions/?hl=en)OR JOIN THE FACEBOOK COMMUNITYhttps://www.facebook.com/golfrulesquestionsLISTEN TO THE GRQ PODCAST ON APPLE OR SPOTIFYClick here: https://anchor.fm/golfrules-questionsSUBSCRIBE to GOLFRULES QUESTIONS https://bit.ly/2I8KrVH for all your golf rules#GolfRules #GolfRulesQuestions #blakey

Although a referee could go into further questioning to confirm the assumption. He returns to the right rough, where he made his 2nd shot from, to proceed under S&D for a lost ball. YouTube Community Question Run-Down - THE GRQ PODCAST EP99

GRQOTW98 Answer:

Sharon played from a wrong place that was also a serious breach, as they should have taken stroke-and-distance for their ball out of bounds. They failed to fix their mistake in time and therefore the only penalty for them is disqualification.

Podcast and Marcela go through the last five Community Questions on YouTube.

During an individual stroke round, Stuart's ball lies in a greenside bunker on the 17th hole at Wombat Hills. He makes a stroke and the ball flies right over the green and into a red penalty area behind the hole. In frustration, he calls out, "what am I doing wrong?" Blakey standing nearby, says, "Mate, you need to take more sand during the shot." Stuart then rakes the bunker. After considering his penalty area relief options, Stuart decides to proceed under stroke and distance and drop in the same bunker that he just played from, which he does. Are there any penalty strokes to either player?

GUEST: Mark Allen, Australian media personality, and former touring professional speaks about his playing days, his infamous hole in one, and karma for those who try to cheat - THE GRQ PODCAST EP11909 Jul 202401:00:42

In episode 119, Stuart chats with former touring professional and now commentator and media personality, Mark Allen.
Mark answers some rapid fire questions about his playing career.
Mark has some funny and entertaining stories with the Rules, with Referees and provides his biggest tip to aspiring Referees on how to deal with players.GRQOTW118

This situation comes down to whether Stuart's ball is lost or whether it is known or virtually certain that his ball was moved by an outside influence. From the sounds of it, when the question said " but knowing that he really doesn't know for sure that someone else took his ball" would suggest that there was no serious consideration to whether Stuart thought his ball was moved by an outside influence.  It was them thinking it was just unfair and just put another ball into play.IF the Committee decided that it was KVC that Stuart's ball was moved by an outside influence, then he was permitted to replace a ball back on the estimated spot and resume play of the hole with no penalty.  However, Rule 9.6 requires a ball to be replaced on the spot and not dropped.  Stuart dropping the ball would incur the GP for playing from a wrong place.
Normally, a penalty must not be added or corrected after a stroke-play competition has closed.  If Stuart did not know about the GP, he is not disqualified for the lower score as did not know about the penalty strokes before the competition closed.   In this case, the competition results would stand.
IF the Committee decided there was NOT KVC for an outside influence moving the ball, then Stuart's ball was lost and his only option was to proceed under stroke and distance and return to the teeing area.  He has put another into play in the middle of the fairway, however he has made a stroke from the wrong place and that would be considered a serious breach due to the significant advantage he would have gained.  The SB needs to be corrected before making a stroke to begin the 10th hole, otherwise Stuart is DQed.
However, let's turn to Rule 20.2e(2) is Disqualifying Players After the Result of Competition Is Final.  A player must be disqualified even after the competition is closed if they:

  • Knew before the competition had closed that they were in breach of any other Rule with a penalty of disqualification, or
  • Agreed with another player to ignore any Rule or penalty they knew applied.

The Committee would need to decide that Stuart knew that he couldn't just drop a ball in the middle of the fairway for a lost ball.  Blakey's comments in the bar afterwards would also suggest that he knew that wasn't the correct procedure.  They may ask the players to confirm their understanding of the Rule.
On this basis, The Committee would DQ both Stuart and Blakey.   Jeff, who finished 3rd, would be awarded the Winter Cup.
You could also turn to Rule 1.3b - Applying the Rules.   Players are responsible for applying the Rules to themselves.
If a player knows they have breached a Rule that involves a penalty and deliberately fails to apply the penalty, the player is disqualified.  If two or more players agree to ignore any Rule or penalty they know applies and any of those players have started the round, they are disqualified.
If I was on the Committee, I would strongly push to DQ both Blakey and Stuart for failing to follow the correct procedure for Stuart's lost ball. GRQOTW119

Blakey and Stuart are playing a match in the Koala Cup at Wombat Hills.
Blakey makes a putt on the 18th to win the match.  Blakey and Stuart shake hands and Stuart says, "Congratulations!"As they stand beside the 18th green attending to their clubs, a spectator walks briskly from the Clubhouse and tells Stuart that Blakey forgot to replace his ball marker in the correct spot, after he moved it on the putting green.  Blakey and Stuart cannot remember but they agree to play extra holes to determine the winner.   Stuart wins the 20th hole.
What is the official result of the match and why?
