Will Kinchin has been a good friend of the EcoSend team for a long time, so we were delighted to welcome him for episode eight of our Fifth Season.

Will runs a boutique creative design Agency, working with purpose-driven brands and charities.

But this episode wasn't just a chance to learn from Will's extensive experience as an Entrepreneur for Good, but also a deep 'dive' into the world of surfing, sewage, offshore drilling, and seismic blasting.

In this deeply human episode, Will opened our eyes to the challenge the UK's coastline and marine life face from pollution and drilling. His stories were at the same time melancholic and uplifting.

S4E10 'Sustainability and Space?!', with Ryan Laird 👽03 Apr 202400:35:08

When it comes to talking about Sustainability, we always think about here 'on the ground' on Planet Earth.

But what about that vast, infinite Universe sitting above our heads? Space!

What role can Space and satellites have in Sustainability? Can we use Space Technology to build a better future for ourselves, or will it end-up yet another contributing factor to the Climate Challenge?

Enter Ryan Laird, our final guest of the season, CEO of Green Orbit Digital, for a fascinating insight into unexplored territory!

Ryan joined James in the hot-seat to talk about:

🎓 His journey from Physics to Marketing and Space Sustainability.

🌐 How satellite data could be the key to safeguarding our future against climate-change.
👥 Creating a Digital 'Twin' of the world to monitor the health of the planet and inform environmental policies.
... and much more! ✨

This was an incredible episode delving into an area we'd never thought of before. Expect fascinating stories about how satellites have been used to alert illegal logging in Brasil, 'The Copernicus Program', and the mechanics of sending up and repairing satellites in Space.

In order to safeguard our future, we desperately need to integrate Sustainability; not just into every activity here on Earth, but in our activities in the stars above too. 💚

S4E9 'Fighting Greenhushing paralysis', with Maddy Cooper 🦸‍♀️27 Mar 202400:33:40

More and more brands these days are self-censoring their Sustainability efforts, due to fear of being called out for Greenwashing.

But as today's guest Maddy Cooper explains, this "paralysis of Greenhushing" is incredibly damaging for the success and momentum of the Sustainability movement.

Since struggling with her own climate anxiety, Maddy took it upon herself to transform her career in Marketing; first by attending the University of Cambridge's Sustainability Leadership Course, then taking her former agency through B-Corp certification, before finally launching her own Sustainability Marketing practise - Flourish.

In this episode, Maddy gives a wealth of practical tips, tools, and resources to help Marketers speak with confidence about their Sustainability efforts.

As our penultimate guest of the season, Maddy chatted with James about:

🙅‍♀️ Attracting the next generation of talent; 1/3 of Gen Z applicants will reject employers with poor Sustainability credentials.
💚 How Sustainability must be at the heart of every company, not just a bolt-on.
... and much more! ✨

We'd highly recommend all Marketers to check out this episode - the tools and tips Maddy shares are incredibly practical and could really help transform your Sustainable Marketing efforts. S4E8 'Helping Slow Brands Reveal Their Wild Side!', with Julien Massiot 🐯20 Mar 202400:38:52

Advertising often gets a bad rep in Sustainability circles, and that can be for good reason.

Too often, Adverting is used as a tool to manipulate people into purchases they don't need, or  to divert attention away from or 'greenwash' companies' Sustainability credentials.

This was the dilemma Julien Massiot faced many years ago, when he realised he could not separate his values from his work, and started refusing Advertising campaigns for products he disagreed with morally.

Realising he had to go it alone, Julien founded 'Wild & Slow' - a Sustainable Advertising company. Julien now brings his 15 years of experience in advertising to help Sustainable brands find their voice and spread their mission.

In one of our most entertaining episodes so far, Julien spoke to James about:

😎 Why Sustainable brands mustn't give up 'The Monopoly of Cool' to non-sustainable brands
⛔ How publicly blacklisting sectors he refuses to work with has helped him build trust and win business
💨 How Wild & Slow emits 1/3rd the average of the Adverting sector
🥱 Removing the stigma around Sustainability brands being boring or self-righteous
🤖 The importance of honesty and integrity, as we move into a future increasingly influenced by AI
... and much more! ✨

Julien's story is a fantastic example of firmly placing his values and mission at the forefront of his career direction. And a great reminder we can have far more positive impact in our business than just in our personal lives. 💚

About Julien Massiot:
Julien is an Advertising entrepreneur. He helps slow brands to reveal their wild side to become better than fast and furious brands, and if the founder of 'Wild & Slow' Agency.

S4E3 'Purpose-driven film-making, and rejecting Louis Vuitton', with Magali Seyvet 🎥14 Feb 202400:34:07

It's all very well to hold values 'on paper', but when those values are tested by business decisions, many change-makers find themselves sadly making compromises.

That can involve agreeing to work for clients who you know don't match with your mission. But the financial incentives can be hard to say no to, especially for freelancers in the Sustainability and Regenerative Business sector.

Magali Seyvet however, is not one for compromises!

Magali is on a mission to harness the power of film-making and narrative to create positive-change. But not only does she prioritise working with clients who share her values, she categorically refuses to work with those who don't!

In this episode we loved getting to know Magali and her take on:

🚜 Her journey to today, from studying Engineering & Agronomy, to independent film-making.
😍 Turning a hobby into a full-time job.
🎞️ The power of film-making to communicate stories.
💪 Overcoming the challenges of being a one-person film producer.
😱 Why she rejected work for LVMH.
... and much more! ✨

Magali is an incredible example of a no bullsh*t approach to aligning purpose with business; unafraid to have tough conversations and to say 'non' to misaligned work, so that can focus on well-aligned work.

We took a ton of inspiration from our chat with Magali, and we hope you will too!

About Magali Seyvet:
Magali Seyvet is deeply convinced that the power of filmmaking, if used better, can make this world a better place. In that way, she makes branded documentaries for purpose companies and organizations.

S2 #8 'How do we unravel the true climate-cost of AI and ChatGPT?', with Kasper Ludvigsen14 Jun 202300:36:14

It's not every day you get to sit down and pick the brains of a data scientist for The Danish National Police. Especially when that data scientist also happens to be an expert in the climate impact of AI. But today was one of those days!

Have you ever considered the carbon cost of AI? Every time you input a question to ChatGPT, how much energy do you think is required to run those processes? Then, zoom out a bit. Think about how many requests are made to ChatGPT every day across the world, how much energy is required to run that?!

Be prepared for this episode to take you down the rabbit hole of the true carbon cost of AI; machine language learning and processing.

In this episode Kasper takes James on a journey to investigate the questions no one is asking:
- What is the true energy cost of running AI programs like ChatGPT?
- How many litres of water(!) does Kasper calculate ChatGPT consumed in one month?
- How Chat4.0, OpenAI's successor to Chat3.5, could gobble over 5 times the energy required by Chat3.5!
- Why is it so difficult to get accurate calculations around AI's energy usage, and why are companies like OpenAI not more transparent?
- The importance of the right geographic location of AI's data centres.
- The correlation between drought-affected areas, and the installation of data centres.

About Kasper Groes Albin Ludvigsen
Kasper is a data scientist at The Danish National Police, with several years of experience in consulting and the financial sector. Kasper is also co-founder and board member at the Danish Data Science Community (DDSC).
