Soy Myths Debunked01 Sep 202400:18:52

After 15 years of medical practice and thousands of questions regarding nutrition, this is my favorite one: "is soy healthy?".  Why did soy get such a bad reputation?  Why do some actual real life medical doctors discourage their patients from consuming soy?

In this episode, I'll summarize findings from a massive undertaking where international scientists and researchers came together and reviewed hundreds of trials and finally came to a scientific consensus about soy.  I'll also answer all of your burning questions about soy, including:

  • is soy linked to cancer?
  • is soy adequate for children?
  • does soy consumption in men lead to "man-boobs"?
  • does soy affect thyroid function?

Trouvez Votre Pourquoi23 Jun 202400:38:58

Foods To Prevent And Fight Breast Cancer16 Jun 202400:30:51

Breast cancer is bad news.  One out of every 8 women will get diagnosed and 1 out of every 30-40 will die from it.  Keeping a straight poker face while nervously and cautiously palpating a suspicious breast mass is an art, but unfortunately we get quite good at it.

Most people aren't ready to change.  But do you know who is?  The people whom I've just given a crushing diagnosis to.  It’s impressive how these people will clean up their nutrition, start exercising, walk in nature and change their outlook on life.  We have a lot to learn from cancer survivors and they are truly the most fascinating and beautiful people I know.  If only there was a way to help people prevent cancer before it happened.

Cholesterol: The Silent Killer09 Jun 202400:42:24
I always find it interesting when patients tell me they don't "believe" in meds, yet they do absolutely nothing to not need them.

Modern medical advances and pharmaceuticals are among the main reasons that we live longer lives while having unhealthy lifestyles.  I wish modern medicine and lifestyle medicine would get married and have children, so we could bridge the gap between them, instead of seeing them in a divisive and polarized way.  It doesn't always have to be one or the other.  We should be fighting together towards a common goal.

I do understand wanting to take a more "natural" approach, and personally, I would rather modify my lifestyle than take meds, even if not all doctors or patients would agree.  What I can't comprehend though is people choosing “natural” only when it suits them, while eating "unnatural" and highly processed food day after day, meal after meal.  Have the big food corporations won?  Or did we just give up?

The Science Of Losing Weight And Keeping It Off02 Jun 202400:31:02

Weight management is hard.  Two thirds of people are overweight or obese, and although fat shaming is despicable, talking about the health risks associated with carrying excess body fat shouldn’t ever be off limits, or taboo.  I truly believe that knowledge is power, and anyone looking for an optimal body weight should understand the nuts and bolts of the process.  Although I don’t pretend to be a weight loss expert, I do believe everyone looking for optimal health and body weight should be made aware of the building blocks of calorie balance.

Food For Menopause And Hormone Health19 May 202400:13:28

Recently, I was asked a great question, and one that I get often as a primary care physician:  “What foods could potentially alleviate menopausal symptoms?”.  Women, this one’s for you, but men, stick with me cause your wives, moms and daughters are counting on you.

Although menopause can reek havoc on a women’s physical and mental health, this particular person was inquiring specifically about vasomotor symptoms, also called hot flashes or “flushes”, where sudden blood vessel dilation causes a rapid increase of heat-generating blood flow to the skin.  This bothersome symptom can affect up to 75-80% of post-menopausal women, but I’m happy to inform those affected that there are some options other than meds.  Let’s address menopausal hot flashes in more detail.

The Gut-Brain Connection: The Link Between Food And Mental Health12 May 202400:19:07

How could food possibly affect mental health?  That doesn't make sense.  How could something we put in our mouths possibly have anything to do with our moods?  Just so happens that our minds and our guts are more connected than we previously thought.

Our brain relies on 3 specific chemicals, called neurotransmitters, to convey chemical messages that we then translate into moods and emotions.  You've probably heard of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine (also called noradrenaline).  They play an important role in mood regulation and are the target of most of our medications we use to treat mental illness.  But we also have other important mechanisms that influence our mental well-being.

Although worlds apart, the gut and the brain are completely intertwined.  More than 95% of serotonin receptors are actually in the gut, not the brain.  It’s no surprise that medication used to treat depression and to increase serotonin can have side effects related to gastro-intestinal upset.  Our brain and gut both originate from the same cells in the embryo, and although they separate themselves from each other physically, they remain attached through the vagus nerve and through chemical signaling from bacteria residing in our colon.  Wait, what?  Bacteria in our colon have an impact on our moods?  Yes, you read that correctly.

Raising Plant-Based Kids05 May 202400:21:23

Raising two plant-based kids wasn’t easy, but it was worth it!  The story starts with Zara, my first born, who started off being asthmatic and suffering from milk protein allergies and eczema.  She would rash around her mouth after breastfeeding and had traces of blood in her diaper.  The first ER visit for her asthma was a scary one, but that got us on the path we are now.  I quickly started making the association between cow’s milk, dairy products and her symptoms, since they coincided perfectly.  Then Kassi is born in 2014, and has the same issues.  Again my wife cuts out all dairy from her diet to be able to pursue breastfeeding, something she held close to her heart for multiple reasons.

Simultaneously, I was also going through medical issues myself.  I detail those in my second blog post.  Put all of that together, and my last episode of facial swelling was the final draw.  I then discovered the whole food plant-based diet and all its amazing benefits.

Your Health & Salt/Sodium: Pink, Celtic, Epsom Or Himalayan?22 Apr 202400:29:42

You've probably heard bad things about salt and sodium before.  Have you ever asked yourself if pink salt is really healthier than table salt, or if sea salt is better than Celtic salt?  Is salt bad for you and are there really healthier versions?  Why should you even care about salt or sodium consumption?  How about salt mined from the Himalayas?  How about salt baths?  I'll answer all these salty questions here by using the best scientific evidence available.  Turns out that salt can really cause problems for some people and you might be surprised to find out some of my salty secrets.

Managing Blood Pressure With Food And Lifestyle18 Aug 202400:20:37

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a major risk factor for our first killer worldwide, cardiovascular disease. Although no one is pretending that eating a stalk of celery will impact blood pressure the same way that pharmacologic doses of medication would, it’s important to recognize that small impacts add up.

For those who have only minimal increases in BP, certain specific nutrients have been shown to have significant impact on BP. For others who may have higher elevations, certain dietary patterns could also significantly improve BP control.

If you’re thinking of making changes to your diet or lifestyle, please talk to your doctor to make sure your BP doesn’t get too low.

Protein Bars And How To Choose The Right One For You14 Apr 202400:17:32

First of all, I eat and love protein bars!  I’m not here to rain on anyone’s protein parade, but walk down the grocery aisle and you’ll quickly notice many varieties of protein bars plastered with different health claims, like “organic”, ”fermented”, and “natural”.

What people fail to realize is that some protein bars have more sugar than candy bars.  Although protein bars do offer some nutrition on the go, they are often marketed as nutritious and filling, but they are NOT health foods or meal replacements, and it’s important for people to avoid using them as food crutches.  I’ll break down what they are, and how to choose the healthiest ones!  Hopefully, by the end of this episode, you’ll be able to make a more informed choice about which protein bar is right for you.

The Alcoholic That Changed My Life24 Mar 202400:22:58

I've been in practice for almost 15 years and I've witnessed some pretty intense situations.  I'm not a brain surgeon, or an oncologist.  I don't cut people's skull open or prescribe chemotherapy, but I’m an expert in getting to know you. I know your kids.  And if you've been a patient of mine long enough, I might even know the name of your dog.  We’ve probably been through a lot together.  I'm "just" a family doctor, but you don’t have to feel bad for me purposely choosing to not add an extra 3 years of medical training to specialize.  That was a personal choice.  I wanted to be a family doctor.  I chose that path on purpose.

What I like the most about being a family doctor is forming strong long-term bonds with my patients.  I often think about them even when I'm not at work.  They pop-up here and there in my thoughts, spontaneously distracting me from whatever I was doing.  Then my wife says "what are you thinking about?", to which I reply "Nothing".  I feel connected to them, and when I give them their difficult diagnosis, I feel it too.  How can doctors keep working day in and day out when most of the news they deliver is bad?

What I Eat In A Day10 Mar 202400:18:44

Let’s downshift back to a simple question that many people ask me: “What does a plant-based doctor actually eat in a day?”.

After pre-med, medical school, medical residency and after almost 15 years of medical practice and teaching at our local medical school, it’s safe to say that I’ve accumulated lots of random facts, knowledge and experience.  But over the last 7-8 years, I’ve focused most of my energy and spare time on scouring the medical literature for hidden gems of information on nutrition science.  I’ve learned a lot about basic biochemical functions, chemical structures and even though I‘ve accumulated a wealth of knowledge about nutrients on a microscopic level, I’m still fascinated that the question I get asked the most is: “what do you eat?”.  It’s like people think I’m trekking over mountain tops in search of some tropical super fruit no one else knows nothing about.  I‘m proud to report that my meals are pretty darn simple, quick and easy to prepare.  Nothing glamorous, nothing worth gracing the cover of ”Foodie” magazine.  Just real food that grows in the ground, or from a tree.  Food that doesn’t have eyes or a mother and father.

Let’s break it down into its simplest form!  I’ll go meal by meal and describe in detail what I eat in a typical day!  Keep in mind, studies suggest that most of us eat as little as 5 different meals that we rotate, but the average is 8-10.  If you can put a plant-based twist on meals you already eat, you’re already most of the way there.

The Blue Zones Of Longevity 03 Mar 202400:18:27

Did you know that most people with chronic diseases will live shorter lives and could spend the final 6 years as disabled, while relying on family and the healthcare system.  And did you know that it’s fairly realistic to extend the length of your life, while maintaining the quality of it, through lifestyle modification? I mean, what's the point of living longer if the quality of those years suck?  Chronic diseases like diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol usually appear in your forties or fifties, but only cause problems 10-20 years down the road, so slowly that you might not even realize it until it’s too late.

The Protein Panic: Part 2/2, Protein Quality and Digestibility22 Feb 202400:22:03

On today's episode, let's answer these important questions:

  1. If someone you were talking to was concerned about their protein intake if they moved to a plant-based diet (because they heard that plant-based protein isn't as "good" as an animal-based diet), what would you say to them?
  2. If the person asked about how much protein they should be eating in a day, what would you say to them?
  3. What are some examples of plant-based meals that would meet your optimal protein requirements?

Now that I've been on a plant-based diet for almost a decade, I'm tempted to cringe at those who question the adequacy of my protein intake.  But I don't, because I remember having those same concerns at the beginning of my transition.  As a multi-sport athlete, I also grew up in the protein-meat-gym culture and those misconceptions about protein are very difficult to reverse.  I transitioned for health reasons, but I was still concerned that my athletic performance would be negatively impacted by my new plant-based diet.  That's why I paid special attention to learning about what makes plant-protein different than animal protein and how to make sure I was getting enough.  Turns out that meeting protein requirements is easier than most think.

The Protein Panic: Part 1/220 Feb 202400:29:33

People seem to panic when it comes to getting enough protein, particularly when I mention plant-based diets.  Everyone seems to be worried about hitting protein requirements, even though I've never seen a case of protein deficiency in my 15 years of medical practice.  We now have an abundance of research confirming that even vegans who aren't paying particular attention to plant-based sources of protein are still hitting their daily goals.  I'm not suggesting we dismiss protein intake or minimize the potential risks of amino acid deficiency on plant-based diets, I'm simply stating that this whole protein panic has been blown way out of proportion.

We tend to associate protein intake with health and strength and the health halo that surrounds this macronutrient has always intrigued me.  At least we've avoided demonizing protein, like we've done with carbs and fat.  The attention protein gets seems to distract us from other nutrients of concern, like fiber, or iron.  We see these nutrient deficiencies regularly, yet everyone wants to talk about protein.  In this episode, I'll review protein, how it's made, what it does and why there's no need to panic!

The Paleo Diet11 Aug 202400:26:01

The paleo diet gets a lot of things right.  It tells you to ditch candy bars, doughnuts and processed junk.  That's where we can agree.  But here's where we don't.  "Eat like a caveman" is the premise of this dietary pattern.  I'm sure our paleo ancestors were the picture of health, considering the average life expectancy was less than 30 years. Cavemen didn't even survive long enough to suffer from chronic disease.  So why are we promoting this diet and telling people it prevents them?

The Truth About Fat: All You Need To Know18 Feb 202400:26:50

Do you think dietary fat is bad?  Do you follow a low fat diet because you think a high fat diet is unhealthy?  Have we all been duped?

In the seventies and eighties, there was this general recommendation to avoid fat, thinking that fat was causing disease.  We hadn’t yet started to study the different types of fat and knew nothing about good fats.  Even governmental guidelines recommended low-fat diets.  The fear of fat was more than enough motivation for food processing companies to get to work.  By creating “fat-free” versions of their foods, they raked in millions and made millions sicker.  Little did we know that by replacing the fat in foods with heavily processed ingredients, like sugar, white flour or high-fructose corn syrup, we were right back to where we started.  In 2014, The NY Time magazine published a controversial cover story.  “Eat Butter” was what they irresponsibly promoted.  By saying “butter is back”, they gained many fans, but most people had no clue that the study praising saturated fat that they were referring to was incredibly flawed.

In this episode, we cover dietary and body fat, fatty acids including omegas, as well as saturated and trans fats.

Everything Carbs: Are They Really The Enemy?04 Feb 202400:40:20

You've most certainly heard the phrase: "carbs are the enemy".  I'm hoping the person who made that statement wasn't a registered dietitian or a medical doctor, although if they were, I’m guessing they sell lifestyle books or wellness programs.  Turns out I was partly right.  In fact, carbs have been vilified since the dawn of the low-carb diet.  In the 1970's, Dr Robert Atkins, the father of the low-carb movement, published his Diet Revolution books, which went on to sell over 15 million copies.

He encouraged people to cut out all carbs and focus mainly on foods that contained the two other macronutrients: protein and fat.  No wonder this dietary pattern became so popular.  People were told to eat bacon, cheese and fried chicken, and even though prestigious scientific journals called these dietary recommendations dangerous and irresponsible, the damage to carb's reputation was already done.

The Nuances Behind Calories IN and Calories OUT28 Jan 202400:23:15

Let me explain how calories from whole plant foods behave differently from the processed foods most people consume.  I’m sure you’ve heard it before.  “Calories in must equal calories out”, otherwise weight gain will follow.  This is nuanced and only partly true.  The saying “a calorie is a calorie“ assumes that a calorie coming from any food source, whether it’s French fries or a garden salad, will behave the same way once in our bodies.  Let me make it crystal clear, 700 calories coming from French fries WILL NOT affect your weight, metabolism and hormones the same way as 700 calories coming from an unprocessed whole food source.  I wouldn’t want someone looking to lose weight to choose processed foods instead of eating the same amount of calories from whole foods, thinking that their impact on weight gain or loss will be the same.

People love hearing good news about their bad habits, so I’m sure they would love to hear that they can have the French fries, thinking its calories will have the same impact on weight than any other food with the same calories.  That simply isn’t true.  It assumes that 300 calories of French fries from McDonald’s will have the same impact on weight gain as 300 calories of beans or nuts and we know that this is not the case.

Obesity, Processed Foods And Their Connections22 Jan 202400:26:26

Talking about obesity is controversial in itself, but not talking about it isn’t better.  Some believe that obesity is a choice, even a lack of motivation.  They associate being overweight with being lazy and inactive, but is that really the case?  I personally don’t think so.  Let me explain why.

In this episode, I'll talk about obesity, processed foods and how they're linked.

Why You Should Consider Trending Towards More Plants!19 Jan 202400:33:17

When I transitioned to a plant-based diet more than a decade ago, I did it purely to improve my health. There was overwhelming proof that doing so might improve my asthma, eczema, urticaria and cholinergic angioedema.

But as I put all of these conditions in remission, I started thinking about the other impacts that this diet would have on my athletic performance, weight and muscle mass, on my carbon footprint and on animal cruelty. Soon, I found myself connecting with all of these reasons and I decided to dive even deeper into plant-based nutrition.

In this episode, I discuss the benefits of going plant-based and the reasons that might fuel your own personal journey towards a diet of health and compassion.

My Bizarre, Yet Remarkable Origin Story24 Jun 202300:24:31

I had been suffering from a combination of chronic diseases for a long time, but even this wasn't enough to make me change. I thought I was living a healthy life. I was exercising regularly and eating what I thought was a balanced diet.

When my daughters started showing signs of medical conditions similar to the ones that had been plaguing me, I knew I had to start thinking out of the box.

Here's my story. I went from the hospital to the world championships, from not even being able to run a few kilometers without puffers to running my first sub-2 hour half marathon without any puffers at all.

Everything pointed towards a whole food, plant-predominant diet. Here's how a managed to transition my whole family and reverse our medical conditions in the process.

My origin story is a remarkable one. I went from being sick, tired, overworked and overwhelmed to being diagnosed with cholinergic urticaria and angioedema. Add these medical conditions to my pre-existing asthma, eczema, migraines and GERD and you get a pretty frustrated person. But when my daughters started showing signs of medical conditions that had plagued me for years, that's when I decided to take matters into my own hands. Modern medicine wasn't helping and so I turned to evidence-based nutrition. Within a year, I had reversed or improved most of my medical conditions and gotten rid of all of my prescriptions drugs. Plant-based nutrition gave me my life back and I've since dedicated my free time to spreading the science.

My mission is to make this information easy to understand for everyone from the general public, to my medical students. I want to empower those looking to improve their health through the power of science backed lifestyle medicine.

Although the science is very clear, there is still a lot of confusion online regarding what a healthy dietary pattern should look like. Let's bust some myths and clear up the confusion.

Superfood Secrets: Kombucha, Potion or Poison?04 Aug 202400:15:40

I personally enjoy drinking kombucha!  It contains beneficial bacteria, yeast, organic acids, vitamins and polyphenols.

Although this drink is a type of carbonated tea that has been consumed around the world for thousands of years, it seems to have made quite a comeback lately and people are promoting it as the next big miracle cure for everything from gut health to mental health.  Is there any proof to the hype?  Is kombucha a magic probiotic potion that will be your fountain of youth?  What about reports of liver toxicity and of this tea turning your blood to acid?  There have been case reports of deaths linked to kombucha consumption.  Let’s review what kombucha is, what it contains, and how it affects your body.

Frozen Produce Versus Conventional: Which One Is Healthier?28 Jul 202400:10:08

If I've asked myself this question, I might assume someone else has too.  Do fruits and veggies lose nutrients when frozen?  Is the fresh version healthier?  Often, I fail to eat all the produce I've bought.  I honestly despise throwing away food but when I see that weird fuzzy fungi stuff growing on my strawberries, I know I have no choice.  Sounds familiar?

Superfood Secrets: Nutritional Yeast and Vitamin B1214 Jul 202400:15:29

The Pros and Cons of Dairy08 Sep 202400:42:53

We've always been told that milk helps you grow up to become strong and healthy, yet when we study the longest living and healthiest populations on the planet, we quickly notice that most don't consume the milk of other species.

Does milk really "do a body good"?  What about all the celebrities showing off their milk mustaches?  Is the dairy industry simply a marketing genius?  What are the odds of us having been duped by huge dairy corporations?  Could it be a coincidence that the government of Canada officially removed the dairy food group from the Canadian food guide in 2019?

Does milk really help build strong bones?  That's the message we've been told since our childhood.  We associate milk with calcium, with strong bones and teeth and with health in general.  Is this true?  Would we all be frail and weak without cow's milk?  Why is it normal to drink cow's milk, but not dog or cat's milk, or even moose milk, considering it actually contains way more calcium?  That's a question I've asked myself for a long time, and in my simple human brain, there was always something very weird about drinking the milk of another lactating species.  In this article, I'll review the nutrient content of milk, how it's made along with the process and necessary steps from the farm to your fridge.

Cheers: The Health Implications Of Alcohol15 Sep 202400:20:18

I assume you've heard the age old saying that red wine is great for your heart.  Some would even go as far as saying that some types of alcohol are useful for many other health conditions.  Have we been down-playing the risks of consuming alcohol?  Have you ever used it to relax and unwind, or to treat insomnia, anxiety or social phobia?  Do you drink because you think it’s good for your heart or because it’s healthy?

I don't want to sound like a party pooper, since I too like a good scotch here and there, but that doesn't mean we should avoid talking about the health implications.  I get it, alcohol is an intricate part of our culture, and Acadian Canadians like me have been known to do their fair share of binge drinking.

In many parts of the world, doctors are still recommending alcohol for sleep, anxiety, pain management and even during pregnancy.  I'm not one to rain on anyone's parade, but people love hearing good news about their bad habits.  So I'm not surprised that people would jump for joy after hearing that alcohol is healthy.  If you drink red wine because you love it, then you're an adult and you can decide for yourself, but if you do it for cardiovascular protection or any other medical reason, then you might be surprised to hear what I have to say.  In this article, I'll review the pros and cons of alcohol consumption and I'll summarize the latest research on this highly popular beverage.

Coconuts, Coconut Milk, Water & Oil: Healthy or Hype?29 Sep 202400:21:25

No single food has been as glorified or as vilified as coconuts and all its variations.

What to make of whole coconuts, coconut water, coconut milk or coconut oil?  Some swear by their mystical healing powers, while others avoid it like the plague.  Who to believe?  Are coconuts healthy?  Let’s examine coconuts through scientific lenses and analyze the nutrients in whole coconuts, coconut milk and coconut oil and I'll try to get to the bottom of this superfood mystery.  As a personal disclaimer, I like coconuts.  Although I don’t consume them often, I do enjoy them occasionally as a whole food, and I enjoy the occasional coconut milk chickpea curry and have been known to eat coconut based ice cream here and there, although very rarely, but not because I’m scared of them.  I have simply found healthier alternatives that make coconuts unnecessary in my routine.

My Top Tips For Those Curious About Transitioning To A Plant-Based Diet22 Sep 202400:22:35

For generations, we've known that plant-based dietary patterns were more ethical. Then we started to notice how our food system was harming the environment and using finite resources irresponsibly.  Now, thanks to over 20 000 studies getting published on plant-based nutrition in 2021 alone, we have a much clearer understanding of how adopting a plant-predominant dietary pattern can impact health, both positively and even negatively, if not well planned.

Plant-based diets have gained popularity for the many positive impacts they have on various health outcomes.  They're shown to be associated with lower all-cause mortality and to have protective properties when looking at some of our top killers, like heart disease and cancer.  The term "plant-based" has quickly become associated with perceptions of health.  Soon enough, plant-based labels started to decorate highly processed and unhealthy foods, a clever marketing attempt for those trying to take advantage of the plant-based health halo, further confusing the uneducated consumer.

By itself, the term "plant-based" isn't always synonymous with health.  Rather, it should be seen for what it is, an umbrella term used to describe a "plant-forward" type of dietary pattern that can include anything from flexitarianism to veganism.  Considering the wide variety of healthy dietary patterns, plant-based diets could appear on either side of the spectrum.  Ultra-processed foods with added sugar, fat and sodium can be called plant-based too and aren't always health promoting.  So from now on, when I use the term "plant-based diet" and associating it with health, I'll be referring to a whole food plant-based diet that minimizes animal products and ultra-processed foods.

Gut Health 101: Cramps, bloating, IBS, FODMAPS, Gluten13 Oct 202400:35:36

Have you ever experienced bloating, abdominal cramping, pain or distention?  Do you consider yourself sensitive or intolerant to certain foods?  Do you avoid eating foods that you know are healthy, simply because they cause abdominal symptoms that aren't worth the discomfort?

You could be suffering from IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome, and some of the foods you're avoiding may be the solution, not the problem.

Although IBS doesn't affect life expectancy, surveys have shown that people affected by the condition would give up 25% of their remaining lives in exchange for a permanent cure.  This is proof that this condition is relentless and reeks havoc on people's quality of life.

IBS is a disorder of the GI tract characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits.  In North America, approximately 10-15% of people fit the criteria for the diagnosis, although we know that up to half of the people with compatible gastrointestinal symptoms will remained undiagnosed.  People affected by this disorder will often self-treat, meaning that they'll purposely avoid certain triggers or describe themselves as being intolerant or allergic to certain foods, not realizing that the avoidance of some of these foods might actually be contributing to their symptoms or making them worst.

The Keto Diet20 Oct 202400:41:20

This one says to eat according to your blood type, while that one recommends eating like cavemen.  In 2013, the Paleo diet was the most googled diet out there.  Did anyone tell the Paleos that cavemen barely lived to thirty?  What about the keto diet?  That one regained popularity in 2016.  Why would we want to avoid fruits, grains and beans when they’re among the foods most associated with health and longevity? You probably know someone who had great results with keto, but is it just me, or is it slightly suspicious telling people to avoid well studied health foods while doubling down on bacon and red meat, which are confirmed class 1 carcinogens?

Never has a weight loss diet created so much controversy and division.  The ketogenic diet has been referred to as the best diet for health and weight loss, and has been also called a dietary disaster waiting to happen.  Who should we believe?

Are Fake Meats Healthy?27 Oct 202400:21:12

Over the last decade, there's been a steady rise in the availability and popularity of plant-based meats.  But are they really healthier than what they're trying to replace?  Are they better for the environment?  Are they worth considering or adding to your plate?  Do I feed them to my kids?  In this article, I'll break down what they are, how they're made and what nutrients they contain, including the good and the bad.  We'll also see how they measure up to their meat counterparts.

THE RISE OF PLANT-BASED MEATS

Due to increases in demand, plant-based meat substitutes have gained quite the following.  Social media has helped spread a message of environmental suffering and has also shone a light on the steady rise in chronic diseases linked to excessive meat consumption.  Lots of people are trying to cut back on red and processed meats, which is a good plan since they've officially been classified as carcinogens.  Although they've been around for a while, fake-meat products have gained lots of popularity thanks to this increased awareness about the not so sexy side of meat, as well as some great marketing tactics, including celebrity endorsements.  But what about the scientific data surrounding these trendy meat replacements?  Considered to be processed foods, are they as bad as other ultra refined, yet highly palatable foods?

Changing Is Hard: Must Knows Before Attempting Lifestyle Changes03 Nov 202400:25:55

The vast majority of us aren't born plant-based. Something triggered an AHA moment for some, while for others, it was a long and reflected journey.

Even after transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, we still end up making up less than a few percent of the population.  Estimates suggest that 7-8% of Canadians are vegetarian and a much lower percentage of them are vegan.  Having been a meat eater for most of my life, I can still relate to the thought processes and cognitive dissonance that would create resistance for anyone thinking of making a transition towards plant-predominance.  I've been a plant-based advocate for almost a decade, and my transition towards a plant-exclusive diet was, in my opinion, quick, having transitioned fully in about 18 months.  « Plant-based » is an umbrella term, including all forms of vegetarianism, veganism and flexitarianism (a term used to describe people who eat a plant-predominant diet, but do include small amounts of animal products).  When people tell me: « I could never stop eating meat », I reply: « You don’t have to ».  Never let being perfect get in the way of being better.

My Personal Journey

Lifestyle change can be motivated by intrinsic factors, or extrinsic ones.  Acquiring new habits must align with one's beliefs and core values.  It has to be who you want to be.  I wanted to be healthy, and after having went through a few medical scares, I recognized that my nutrition had to change.  This intrinsic motivation was enough for me.  I saw my daughters suffer from the same health issues that had plagued me and the pain I felt while witnessing this far surpassed the friction that a lifestyle overhaul would cause.  This highly motivated me to change with a sense of urgency.  Within 18 months, I had transitioned fully and the rest of my family soon followed.  Would I have changed if my health challenges hadn't arose?  Would I have spontaneously stumbled across the scientific data backing the whole food plant-based diet if I hadn't been searching for it?  And if so, would I've been as receptive to hearing what the science had to say?

Superfood Secrets: Turmeric, The Golden Spice10 Nov 202400:08:32

Have you ever heard of turmeric, the golden yellow spice that supposedly has many health claims, like accelerated healing, treating inflammation and reversing auto-immune conditions?  Is this hype or evidence based?  Since it costs pennies per day, it probably isn’t a marketing scam, because there’s no profit margin in selling spices.

Spices are perfectly suited to get studied in double blind, randomized and placebo controlled trials.  They fit neatly into capsules and can be tested against inactive placebos easily.  Turmeric (and its potent pigment curcumin) is one of the most studied spices ever.

What does the science say about it?
