Magnesium is a critical mineral that is responsible for more than 600 enzyme reactions in the body, yet most people are not getting enough of it. Magnesium is critical for your cells to make energy, for many different chemical pumps to work, to stabilize membranes, and to help muscles relax. Essentially, anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, or stiff—whether it is a body part or even a mood—can be a sign of low levels of magnesium, and magnesium deficiency has even been linked to inflammation in the body and higher CRP levels.
In today’s episode of a new series I’m calling Know Your Numbers, I dive deep into magnesium. I discuss why millions of people suffer with undetected magnesium deficiency, how conventional medicine misses the mark in measuring magnesium levels, how Functional Medicine treats magnesium deficiency, and much more.
You can test your magnesium levels with Function Health, a company I co-founded. It has been a lifelong dream for me. Function is the first-ever membership that includes 100+ lab tests and personalized insights from globally renowned doctors based on your results. Join Function at FunctionHealth.com.

In today’s episode, I talk with Cal Newport, Jim Kwik, Tobias Rose-Stockwell, and Laurie Santos about the myth that social media can make you happier and why it’s actually a source of anxiety.
Cal Newport is an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and writes about the impact of technological innovations on our culture. Newport is the author of six books, including Digital Minimalism and Deep Work. As we dive into the topic of social media, Cal shares his expertise on how it’s impacting public health and culture in ways much greater than you might expect.
Jim Kwik is an internationally acclaimed authority in the realm of brain optimization, memory improvement, and accelerated learning. With more than 30 years of experience, Jim has dedicated his life to helping people tap into their brain’s full potential. After overcoming learning challenges from a childhood brain injury, Jim embarked on a journey with the mission to leave no brain behind, and, through his teachings, Jim inspires others to unlock their inner genius, empowering them to live a life of greater power, productivity, and purpose.
Tobias Rose-Stockwell is a writer, designer, and media researcher whose work has been featured in major outlets such as The Atlantic, WIRED, NPR, the BBC, CNN, and many others. His research has been cited in the adoption of key interventions to reduce toxicity and polarization within leading tech platforms. He previously led humanitarian projects in Southeast Asia focused on civil war reconstruction efforts, work for which he was honored with an award from the 14th Dalai Lama. He lives in New York with his cat Waffles.
Laurie Santos is a Professor of Psychology and the Head of Silliman College at Yale University, as well as the host of the critically acclaimed podcast The Happiness Lab. After observing a disturbing level of unhappiness and anxiety among her students, she began teaching a course entitled "Psychology and the Good Life," which quickly became the most popular course in Yale's history and has also reached almost 2 million people from all over the world online. Although she’s now best known as a "happiness expert,” Santos's research explores the much broader question of "What makes the human mind unique?" and often includes comparing the cognitive capacities of non-human animals to humans.

When a child is provided real, whole foods unadulterated with sugar, poor quality fats, toxic additives, and food dyes, their body knows exactly what to eat and how much. They will eat just what their growing body needs when provided this high quality diet that their DNA evolved from. What I have come to realize as a parent is that there is a great deal of letting go and going with the flow. I have also learned that, as a parent, what you eat, how you eat, and why you eat what you do is really important because our children are keen observers who absorb everything we do.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I share the top tips and wisdom I have gained from my experience as a doctor and dad for raising healthy eaters.

The foundation of our health is a robust immune system that has a very important mechanism of cleaning out inflammatory cells. If this process is broken, the inflammatory cells can actually turn other functioning cells into inflammatory cells. Our daily life habits and exposures, such as sleep, stress management, diet, and toxins, affect key biological processes that impact our immune function. When our immune health is functioning properly, the rest of our body follows with less illness and disease.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Elizabeth Boham and Dr. Leonard Calabrese about ways that we can support our immune systems to reduce the chance of illness and disease.
Dr. Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing.
Dr. Leonard Calabrese is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and Vice Chair of the Department of Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases. He is also the director of the RJ Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic and holds joint appointments in the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Wellness Institute.

In the US alone, 70% of Americans have either deficient or suboptimal levels of vitamin D. This is a massive problem given vitamin D's impact on our health and its effects on our gene regulation and expression. Vitamin D also regulates calcium and supports the functioning of the immune system, making it one of the most important biological compounds in the body.
In today’s episode of a new series I’m calling Know Your Numbers, I dive deep into vitamin D. I discuss why vitamin D deficiency is a problem, how conventional medicine misses the mark in measuring vitamin D levels, how Functional Medicine treats vitamin D deficiency, and much more.
You can test your vitamin D levels with Function Health, a company I co-founded. It has been a lifelong dream for me. This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Beekeeper’s Naturals, and HigherDOSE.
Modern life is keeping most of us in a state of chronic stress activation, which puts our bodies in an ongoing state of survival mode—setting the stage for burnout. But burnout is not merely the result of working too hard or feeling physically exhausted, and it isn’t a personal failure.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Neha Sangwan, Dr. Andrea Pennington, and Dr. Elizabeth Boham about how chronic unmitigated stress can lead to burnout and how we can address it before our bodies get sick.

Scientists now call Alzheimer’s disease “Type 3 diabetes.” What’s the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes? | Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: A Novel Treatment for Longevity, Brain Health, and Chronic Disease with Dr. Scott Sherr | 06 Dec 2023 | 01:22:42 | |
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, Levels, and Joovv.
I’m willing to bet oxygen isn’t front-of-mind for most of us each day. We can get what we need at any given moment: enough to conveniently power our lungs and bodies without any conscious work on our part. So you might be surprised to learn that oxygen is somewhat of an undercover superhero, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) unleashes its powers for dramatic healing.
HBOT uses air pressure 2 to 3 times higher than the atmospheric pressure around us, helping our lungs gather much more oxygen than would be possible by breathing pure oxygen at standard air pressure. Amplifying oxygen in this way creates an environment that helps fight bacteria and triggers growth factors and stem cells for deep healing.
On today’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to talk to Dr. Scott Sherr all about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and how we can use it to maximize healing and reverse aging.
Dr. Scott Sherr is a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician Certified in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Health Optimization Medicine (HOMe). He is the founder of Integrative HBOT, a worldwide telemedicine practice where he consults and educates patients and clinics using his novel approach to hyperbaric therapy that includes cutting-edge and dynamic HBOT protocols, comprehensive laboratory testing (using the HOMe framework), targeted supplementation, personal practices, synergistic technologies (new and ancient), and more.

| What Standard Cholesterol Testing Isn't Telling You | 04 Dec 2023 | 01:07:31 | |
This episode is brought to you by Rupa University, AG1, and Pendulum.
Dietary cholesterol from saturated fat is often thought to be the cause of high LDL cholesterol and blocked arteries. But we now know from updated research that it’s much more complicated than that. Standard cholesterol testing is outdated because it doesn’t check for particle size and particle number, information that is needed to tell what’s really going on with your cholesterol. Statins are often prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol, but often do not address the root of the problem and can cause very uncomfortable side effects.
In today’s episode, I talk with Drs. Elizabeth Boham, Ronald Krauss, and Aseem Malhotra about the true role of cholesterol and what is really behind heart disease.
Dr. Ronald Krauss is a Senior Scientist at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute, a Professor of Medicine at UCSF, and an Adjunct Professor of Nutritional Sciences at UC Berkeley. Dr. Krauss’s research aims to understand how to best prevent cardiovascular disease through early detection and management of its major risk factors: most notably, elevated levels of blood cholesterol and lipoproteins. He has published more than 450 research articles and reviews on metabolic, genetic, dietary, and drug effects on plasma lipoproteins and the risk of coronary artery disease, with more than 100,000 citations of this work.
Dr. Aseem Malhotra is an NHS-trained consultant cardiologist and visiting Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at the Bahiana School of Medicine and Public Health in Salvador, Brazil. He is a founding member of Action on Sugar. In 2015, he became the youngest member to be appointed to the board of trustees of UK health charity The King's Fund. He is a pioneer of the lifestyle medicine movement in the UK and in 2018 was ranked by software company Onalytica as the number one doctor in the world influencing obesity thinking.

| How To Balance Women's Hormones With Lifestyle And Diet | 27 Nov 2023 | 00:56:43 | |
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Bioptimizers, and Paleovalley.
Contrary to popular belief, women cannot follow the same health and fitness protocols as men and expect the same results. Unlike men, women in their reproductive years have specific hormonal considerations, and their rise and fall throughout the month impact everything from energy to focus, mood, metabolism, and the ability to adapt to good-for-you stressors like exercise or fasting. Meanwhile, perimenopause and menopause pose a whole other list of considerations to keep women feeling well.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Mindy Pelz and Dr. Sara Gottfried about why we need to prioritize teaching women about their hormones.
Dr. Mindy Pelz is a renowned holistic health expert and one of the leading voices in educating women about their hormonal health. She has empowered hundreds of thousands of people around the world to tap into their bodies' innate healing abilities through her “5-Step Approach,” which uses fasting, personalized nutrition, stress management, chemical detoxification, and lifestyle changes to optimize health and slow the aging process.
Dr. Sara Gottfried is a board-certified physician who graduated from Harvard and MIT. She practices evidence-based integrative, precision, and Functional Medicine. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, and Director of Precision Medicine at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. Her three New York Times bestselling books include: The Hormone Cure, The Hormone Reset Diet, and Younger. Her latest book is called Women, Food, and Hormones.

| Why Eating Grains Can Drive Obesity, Heart Disease, Autoimmune Issues, And More | 24 Nov 2023 | 00:28:52 | |
This episode is brought to you by Mitopure and LMNT.
For nearly all of our history, humans consumed no grains, and our bodies are designed to work very well without them. Today, however, grain-based foods are by far the number one source of calories in the American diet. While whole grains can be a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, the toxic amounts we eat contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and dementia. Plus, most of the grains we eat—even whole wheat—are turned into flour products which have a higher glycemic index than table sugar.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about why grains are such a contentious food, how to tackle the pros and cons of whether it belongs in your diet, and which grains are actually okay to eat.

Our circadian rhythm is our body’s innate clock that tells us when to wake up and when to go to sleep. This episode is brought to you by ButcherBox and AG1.
In today’s world, we are seeing an epidemic of ADHD, along with depression, anxiety, dementia, autism, and more. These are systemic disorders where the body affects the brain. Yes, there’s a mind-body connection, but there’s also a body-mind connection. And everybody is different. ADHD is just a name we give to people who share a collection of symptoms: They can’t focus or pay attention, they’re inattentive, and they are hyperactive. These are symptoms. But what are the causes?
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about what causes ADHD, why it’s so prevalent, and my top strategies to address it. I also share a case study of a patient I treated for ADHD.

| Are Your Gut Issues, Headaches, Heart Palpitations, And Other Symptoms Due To Histamine Intolerance? | 30 Oct 2023 | 01:13:49 | |
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Mitopure, and Cozy Earth.
Histamine is a common term when discussing allergies, but there is really so much more to it. Histamine is both made by the body and found in food. It has a key function in digestion and also acts as a neurotransmitter. People who have more histamine in their bodies than they can break down may experience a variety of symptoms including hives, heart palpitations, migraines, fluid retention, runny nose, and more. Often, histamine intolerance can be traced back to gut dysbiosis and mast cell activation syndrome.
In today’s episode, I talk with Dr. Todd LePine, Dr. Leo Galland, and Lisa Dreher about how histamine plays a role in sleep, digestion, allergies, skin conditions, and so much more.
Dr. Todd LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is board certified in internal medicine, specializing in integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years.
Dr. Leo Galland is a board-certified internist, an international bestselling author, and one of the founders of Functional Medicine. Since the onset of the pandemic, he has devoted most of his time to research on Covid-19 and to the education of other health practitioners in understanding the biology of the disease. His latest publication, Long Covid: Prevention and Treatment, is available on his website.
Lisa Dreher is a registered dietitian who got her undergraduate nutrition degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology and completed a dietetic internship through Cornell University. Lisa first worked in the acute care hospital setting and became a clinical nutrition specialist working in pediatric gastroenterology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. At the same time, she pursued her master’s degree in nutrition and integrative health from the Maryland University of Integrative Health and started practicing integrative and functional nutrition in private practice before joining The UltraWellness Center in 2015.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa University and AG1.
Do you experience cravings for sugar and refined carbs? Do you regularly feel tired or sluggish or experience brain fog? Do you have joint pain, muscle aches, bloating, gas, sinus problems, skin problems, anxiety, depression or insomnia, or simply put, do you “feel like crap?” Most people, at some point in their lives, have experienced what I call FLC Syndrome—this is when you Feel Like Crap. Yet most people have no idea what causes it or how to fix it. The good news is that most of us are only a few days away from feeling well, ending sugar and carb cravings, and having control over our bodies.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I talk about how to activate your body’s extraordinary healing and reparative systems with my 10-Day Detox Diet. The 10-Day Detox addresses foundational gaps missing in our modern diet, supplements that support our natural detoxification systems, minerals and amino acids that promote relaxation and deep rest, and a dietary protocol that works by taking out the wrong foods and focusing on the right foods to transform your body in just a few days.

We live in a country that claims to be based on science, goodwill, and policies intended to help people. Her career began in the 1980s when she became deeply involved with HIV/AIDS activism.
