| Episode #12: Eberron: Rising from the Last War Pt. 3 - Keep Sharn and Carry On! | 04 Sep 2024 | 01:08:23 | |
Show notes This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their look at 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' - the Eberron campaign setting for the 5th edition. Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game. Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic. From the 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' Bio: 'Stories Don’t Always End Well Whether aboard an airship or a train car, embark on thrilling adventures shrouded in intrigue! Discover secrets buried by years of devastating war, in which magic-fueled weapons threatened an entire continent. In the post-war world, magic pervades everyday life, and people of all sorts flock to Sharn, a city of wonders where skyscrapers pierce the clouds. Will you find your fortune on mean city streets or scouring the secrets of haunted battlefields? Will you throw in your lot with the mighty dragonmarked houses, ruthless families who control whole nations? Will you seek truth as a newspaper reporter, a university researcher, or a government spy? Or will you forge a destiny that defies the scars of war? This book provides tools that both players and Dungeon Masters need to explore the world of Eberron, including the artificer character class—a master of magical invention—and monsters birthed by ancient warmongering forces.' | The DM's Travel Bookclub: 11. The Quasielemental Planes of Ash & Dust! | 26 Jun 2024 | 01:16:35
The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes! In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Ash & Dust. Markedly different than their positive counterparts, these four negative Quasielemental planes are generally grim places that break down matter. Undead are common in these Quasiplanes, tortured spirits invigorated by the negative energy that infuses everything. The Quasiplane of Ash is an accumulation of burnt matter pressed into a solid mass. In most areas, the quasiplane has the consistency of hard-packed soil, though some regions are much less dense. The Quasiplane of Dust forms when Earth is infused with Negative Energy. It's an expanse of tenuous atmosphere filled with swirling particles of granular matter. | Episode #11: Warriors of the wilderness - Rangers Pt. 2 | 14 Sep 2022 | 01:11:55
Show Notes This week, Fiona and Hamilton head back to the wilderness and discuss the other 6 subclasses for the Ranger - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. An interesting mix of Druid-style spellcasting, Fighter-style combat capabilities, and Rogue-style skills, Rangers could be a welcome asset in adventuring parties...could be. According to the Player's Handbook: 'Rangers specialize in hunting the monsters that threaten the edges of civilization—humanoid raiders, rampaging beasts and monstrosities, terrible giants, and deadly dragons. They learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble. Rangers focus their combat training on techniques that are particularly useful against their specific favored foes. Thanks to their familiarity with the wilds, rangers acquire the ability to cast spells that harness nature’s power, much as a druid does. Their spells, like their combat abilities, emphasize speed, stealth, and the hunt. A ranger’s talents and abilities are honed with deadly focus on the grim task of protecting the borderlands.' In this episode, we cover the following subclasses:
Chapters discussed: 'Ranger' from 'Ch 1: Character options', 'Ranger' from 'Ch. 1: Character options' and 'Subclass Options: Ranger: Drakewarden' from 'Ch. 1: Character creation' Books: 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything', 'Tasha's Cauldron of Everything' and 'Fizban's Treasury of Dragons' published by Wizards of the Coast, November 2017, November 2020 and October 2021 respectively. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Radiance & Steam. The four positive Quasielemental Planes (also known as quasiplanes) hang suspended between the Elemental Planes and the Positive Energy Plane. They combine matter and energy to form vivid, dynamic realms unlike those found anywhere else in the multiverse. The Quasiplane of Radiance is a place of incredible light born of the union between Fire and Positive Energy. Although it's one of the most beautiful sights a body could ever behold, it's also overwhelming. The Quasiplane of Steam forms at the juncture of Water and Positive Energy, where cutters finds themselves swept up in rolling white mists. These vapors are the stuff of clouds and fog and can be breathed safely and feel refreshing against the skin. Book discussed: 'The Inner Planes (2e)' published by Wizards of the Coast (1998). Show Notes This week, Fiona and Hamilton interview Matthew Whitby (@WhitbyWrites), game & narrative designer, host of 'Dungeon Master's Guild House' show and the main writer behind 'Doomed Forgotten Realms: Sword Coast Gazetteer' - a new D&D 5e setting book! From the book's bio: 'Has your group ever lost a Dungeons & Dragons adventure like Storm King’s Thunder, Tomb of Annihilation, or Descent Into Avernus? What would the world look like if you lost all of them? Doomed Forgotten Realms: Sword Coast Gazetteer reimagines the Forgotten Realms as a world where every worst-case scenario became reality. The demons claimed the Underdark, Baldur’s Gate was dragged into the Nine Hells, Auril froze all of Icewind Dale, and dragon cults summoned Tiamat to rain down terror. In this post-apocalyptic vision of the Forgotten Realms, all the adventuring heroes failed and were slain—or they never even answered the call to adventure. But even in this darkest timeline, a faint glimmer of hope remains that good might emerge victorious.' | Bonus: She Is The Ancient! Interview with Beth The Bard | 13 Jul 2022 | 00:39:15
Show Notes This week, Fiona chats to professional dungeon master and TTRPG writer Beth the Bard (@itsBeththeBard) about her best-seller DnD supplement 'She Is The Ancient: A Genderbent Curse of Strahd'. 'She is the Ancient' is a reference guide to the NPCs of the Curse of Strahd campaign book with descriptions, connections, and suggestions for roleplay, as well as story changes and alternate encounters. While marketed as "A Genderbent Curse of Strahd", 'She Is The Ancient' is a bit more than that. There are alternatives for problematic horror depictions and as well the elimination of racial slurs and ableist language from the original module. Maybe you'd like to see more women represented as more than just desired objects or hags? Perhaps you'd like to play a classic Dracula story with less targeted sexual violence? We can have TTRPG horror without the repeated use of prominent real-life horror. After all, as Casual Campbell states, "Vampires should understand consent better than any monster. They literally have to ask for permission to enter a home." 'She Is The Ancient' recently hit Platimum best seller on DM’s Guild and Beth is currently working on updates for a 2nd edition as getting the book ready to print in hardcover. You can find links to all of Beth’s work and her upcoming projects on her website and follow her on Twitter (@ItsBethTheBard). | Bonus: A 0th-Level Adventure! Treasure Hunt! | 06 Jul 2022 | 00:55:44
Show Notes This week, Fiona and guest host Rob from the Realm of Fire podcast take a deep dive into 'Treasure Hunt', the first AD&D adventure ever to present general rules for 0-level characters! From the 'Treasure Hunt' bio: ''The Island of Viledel, the mighty Sea King, was sacked by a pirate army 60 years ago. It's destruction was so complete that even the location of the island was lost and forgotten. Despite rumours of immense treasures still hidden in the ruined stronghold, no one ever found the Sea King's island again Until now. Through a cruel twist of fate, a small band of unwilling adventurers are washed ashore on a small, barren island, and discovers what remains of Viledel's settlement. But they aren't alone; marauding orcs and goblins have found the island too, and are frantically searching for the lost hoard. In this desperate treasure hunt, the real payoff may be survival. "Treasure Hunt" is different from other AD&D adventures: The player characters begin the game at 0 level, without choosing a class, and must work their way up to 1st level. It is perfect for a group of beginning players or experienced players looking for a new and different challenge.' The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes! In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Paraelemental Planes of Ooze & Smoke. These intermediary areas form where aspects of one Elemental Plane mingle with those of another. In essence, they're elemental alloys. The Paraelemental Plane of Ooze is perhaps the most offensive place in the multiverse, the forming where Water comes into contact with Earth. It's a region of filth and disease, of caustic sludge and living slime. The Paraelemental Plane of Smoke forms at the intersection of Air and Fire. The atmosphere here not only roils with heat, but it's also highly toxic. Book discussed: 'The Inner Planes (2e)' published by Wizards of the Coast (1998). | Bonus: ’Our Resolve Is Never Shaken’ - Dwarves and Duergar! | 23 Mar 2022 | 01:02:57
Show Notes This week, Fiona and guest co-host John (@AutomaticDodd) take a closer look at the ancient history and lore behind Dwarves & Duergar, as written about in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes! Bold and hardy, dwarves are known as skilled warriors, miners, and workers of stone and metal. Though they stand well under 5 feet tall, dwarves are so broad and compact that they can weigh as much as a human standing nearly two feet taller. Their courage and endurance are also easily a match for any of the larger folk. The Duergar, on the other hand, see themselves as the true manifestation of dwarven ideals, clever enough not to be taken in by the treacherous deceptions of Moradin and his false promises. Their period of enslavement and the revolt against the mind flayers led by their god, Laduguer, purged the influence of the other dwarven gods from their souls and thus made them into the superior race. | The DM's Travel Bookclub: 7. The Paraelemental Planes of Ice & Magma! | 29 May 2024 | 01:24:15
The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes! In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Paraelemental Planes of Ice & Magma. These intermediary areas form where aspects of one Elemental Plane mingle with those of another. In essence, they're elemental alloys. The Paraelemental Plane of Ice forms where the chillingwinds of Air brush across the surface of Water, while the Paraelemental Plane of Magma occurs where the Elemental Plane of Earth nears its fiery counterpart.
