Episode #12: Eberron: Rising from the Last War Pt. 3 - Keep Sharn and Carry On!

Season 6 · Episode 12

mercredi 4 septembre 2024Duration 01:08:23

Show notes

This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their look at 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' - the Eberron campaign setting for the 5th edition.

Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game.

Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic.

From the 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' Bio:

'Stories Don’t Always End Well

Whether aboard an airship or a train car, embark on thrilling adventures shrouded in intrigue! Discover secrets buried by years of devastating war, in which magic-fueled weapons threatened an entire continent.

In the post-war world, magic pervades everyday life, and people of all sorts flock to Sharn, a city of wonders where skyscrapers pierce the clouds. Will you find your fortune on mean city streets or scouring the secrets of haunted battlefields? Will you throw in your lot with the mighty dragonmarked houses, ruthless families who control whole nations? Will you seek truth as a newspaper reporter, a university researcher, or a government spy? Or will you forge a destiny that defies the scars of war?

This book provides tools that both players and Dungeon Masters need to explore the world of Eberron, including the artificer character class—a master of magical invention—and monsters birthed by ancient warmongering forces.'

The DM's Travel Bookclub: 11. The Quasielemental Planes of Ash & Dust!

mercredi 26 juin 2024Duration 01:16:35

The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes!

In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons.

Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Ash & Dust.

Markedly different than their positive counterparts, these four negative Quasielemental planes are generally grim places that break down matter. Undead are common in these Quasiplanes, tortured spirits invigorated by the negative energy that infuses everything.

The Quasiplane of Ash is an accumulation of burnt matter pressed into a solid mass. In most areas, the quasiplane has the consistency of hard-packed soil, though some regions are much less dense.

The Quasiplane of Dust forms when Earth is infused with Negative Energy. It's an expanse of tenuous atmosphere filled with swirling particles of granular matter.

Episode #14: Spooky Scary Skeletons! Knight of the Living Dead Pt. 1

Season 4 · Episode 14

mercredi 12 octobre 2022Duration 57:03

Content Warnings/Trigger Warnings: Themes of death, peril, violence, memory loss, self-harm, suicide and (naturally) undead creatures.

Show Notes:

This week, Fiona starts her (abridged) play through Knight of the Living Dead, a solo quest adventure book set in the Forgotten Realms!

Written by Allen Varney and published by TSR in 1989, Knight of the Living Dead is part of the CATACOMBS gamebook series which, according to the blurb, represents the ultimate challenge in role-playing adventure.

Through lavish illustrations, readers would journey from chamber to chamber in search of the precious object of their quest. Analytical powers would be tested to the utmost as readers must decide how to deal with the weird and wondrous creatures and artefacts they encounter, using a simplified d12 rule system.

Bonus: Planegea - The Prehistoric Fantasy Setting for 5E! Interview with David Somerville

Season 4

mercredi 5 octobre 2022Duration 51:07

Show Notes

This week, Fiona interviews game designer David Somerville about his latest RPG project, 'The Star-Shaman’s Song of Planegea: The Prehistoric Fantasy Setting for 5e' published by Atlas Games

From Atlas Games website:

'Discover a world of raw action, primordial horror, and mystic awe!'

'Gone are the safe hearths of taverns and libraries, kingdoms and cathedrals. Planegea is a place of utter wildness, where survival is the only law and it must be carved from the world by force of might and magic.

Nothing is as you expect in Planegea. It is a realm where the planes of existence have not yet separated, and a great warrior can travel by foot from the Sea of Stars to the infinite, volcanic peaks of Blood Mountain.

Drawn from the traditions of sword & sorcery pulp adventures, infused with the blood-pounding thrills of the Fury Road, and caught in the jaws of primordial dreams, Planegea calls to those who've felt the cold wind raise a chill of hunt and hope on their raw skin.'

Be sure to check out the latest developments of Planegea on Patreon. You can also find out more information about Planegea on DiscordRedditTwitter, and Instagram.

Episode #11: Warriors of the wilderness - Rangers Pt. 2

Season 4 · Episode 11

mercredi 14 septembre 2022Duration 01:11:55

Show Notes

This week, Fiona and Hamilton head back to the wilderness and discuss the other 6 subclasses for the Ranger - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. An interesting mix of Druid-style spellcasting, Fighter-style combat capabilities, and Rogue-style skills, Rangers could be a welcome asset in adventuring parties...could be.

According to the Player's Handbook:

'Rangers specialize in hunting the monsters that threaten the edges of civilization—humanoid raiders, rampaging beasts and monstrosities, terrible giants, and deadly dragons. They learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble. Rangers focus their combat training on techniques that are particularly useful against their specific favored foes.

Thanks to their familiarity with the wilds, rangers acquire the ability to cast spells that harness nature’s power, much as a druid does. Their spells, like their combat abilities, emphasize speed, stealth, and the hunt. A ranger’s talents and abilities are honed with deadly focus on the grim task of protecting the borderlands.'

In this episode, we cover the following subclasses:

  • Updated Beast Master (from TCoE)
  • Optional Class Features (from TCoE)
  • Gloom Stalker (from XGtE)
  • Horizon Walker (from XGtE)
  • Monster Slayer (from XGtE)
  • Fey Wanderer (from TCoE)
  • Swarmkeeper (from TCoE)
  • Drakewarden (from FToD)

Chapters discussed: 'Ranger' from 'Ch 1: Character options', 'Ranger' from 'Ch. 1: Character options' and 'Subclass Options: Ranger: Drakewarden' from 'Ch. 1: Character creation'

Books: 'Xanathar's Guide to Everything', 'Tasha's Cauldron of Everything' and 'Fizban's Treasury of Dragons' published by Wizards of the Coast, November 2017, November 2020 and October 2021 respectively.
