Physics vs Mysticism - Dr. M.S. DeLay & A. V. Bendebury, DS Pod #27905 Sep 202401:53:17

We sit down for a discussion about the futility of rationalism, by way of William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. We start with the question of utopias, and try to diagnose why, if they're doomed to fail, it's still worth trying to create them, and then move on to the question of the scientific project - which seems to be an attempt to create a rationalist utopia. James' take on mystical experiences - that they're nearly universally accessible, though rarely long dwelt in - seems to suggest that there is something about the tremulous experience of being alive that will leave us with the feeling of being part of something larger than ourselves no matter how rational we get. So, then, if we can never escape the mystical experience, is it worth trying? And if it is, and we take the project of science to be worthwhile, where does the mystic live? Magic, CIA Research & ESP Abilities - Dr. Dean Radin, IONS - DSPod #27801 Sep 202402:42:19

Dr. Dean Radin is an investigator of parapsychological phenomena whose career has spanned Bell Labs, Stanford Research Institute as part of the Stargate Project, Princeton, and who is now the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Radin approaches his search for evidence of psychokinesis and extrasensory perception as an engineer, and has spent his career building devices that can be reproducibly (though subtly) affected by the minds of experimental subjects that have ranged from his colleagues at Bell Labs to thousands of participants from across the web. We talk about how the buttoned up engineer started studying such esoteric phenomena, working for the CIA, how there's no proof that can convince a skeptic, his recent research that suggests that mental action can affect the outcome of quantum experiments, and his radically transparent approach to research.

Henry Corbin's Poetic Fabric of Reality - Dr. Tom Cheetham, Author - DS Pod #26901 Aug 202403:03:43

Dr. Tom Cheetham is a naturalist, poet, and author who has spent the last few decades of his life engrossed in the work of Henry Corbin, who inspired a century of studies of the unconscious mind. Corbin’s aim was to understand the line that cut across the mystic traditions of the world, in the hopes of finding something that was the universal ground of being. To that end, he searched for answers in the work of everyone from Continental philosophers, to the medieval gnostics, to the Persian mystics and honed in on something he called the “imaginal realm,” inhabited by angels who guide their human charges towards a life of meaning and profundity. We talk with Cheetham about the nature of inspiration, the universal ground of experience, the search for truth, and the visionary power of psychedelic experiences Sign up for our Patreon and get episodes early + join our weekly Patron Chat https://bit.ly/3lcAasB AND rock some Demystify Gear to spread the word: https://demystifysci.myspreadshop.com/ Check out (00:00) Go! Urability, Origins of Life, and Limits of Phenotype - Dr. Bruce Damer, Biota Institute DSci #17920 Aug 202302:59:53

Dr. Bruce Damer is an astrobiologist, computer scientist, and director of the BIOTA Institute at UC Santa Cruz with a compelling theory for the origin of life on Earth. Damer and his colleagues have proposed that life didn't begin at the bottom of the ocean, or at a hydrothermal vent, or in the irradiated clouds of the early Earth. They propose the formation of the earliest cells out in the open, at the margins of vernal hot spring pools filled with amino acids, minerals, and proto-nucleotides carried to Earth by a constant shower of organic-rich micrometeorites. We talk about the hardest questions on Earth, why hydrothermal vents are a dead end, why origin of life researchers don't throw hot coffee at each other any more, and how figuring out where we came from might let us keep going for long enough to reach the stars. Check out Bruce's work at the Biota Institute: https://biota.org/ (00:00:00) Go! (00:00:17) Who is Bruce Damer? (00:03:08) Why is Origins of Life Research So Contentious? Ancient Vedic Cosmology Echoes Modern Physics - Sid Chhabra, DSci 17817 Aug 202301:27:07

Sid Chhabra is a computer scientist and scholar of Vedic cosmology. His research has revealed startling quantitative similarities between the predictions of ancient works and modern mathematical physics. Fundamentally, however, Sid approaches cosmology as an integrative art that requires one to put themselves into a cosmic context on a daily basis. He argues that cosmology is a study rich with meaning for each person's journey through this world. Rising Waters, Hidden History - Samo Burja, Bismarck Analysis03 Aug 202301:54:45

Samo Burja is a research fellow at the Long Now Foundation, the founder of Bismarck Analysis, and originator of the Great Founder theory, who is driven by a simple question. Why have all prior civilizations failed, and how can ours escape the same fate? Our conversation focuses on the ways in which getting good data is almost impossible. Civilizations rise, fall, and their skeletons get scavenged to nourish what comes next. Floods sweep the landscape clean of the best laid plans, and rising sea levels bury the rest. We talk about the future of the academy, the search for buried treasures, and informed searches for long-lost cultures. Note - we had some technical difficulties at the end here, and so the audio for the last 20 minutes is pretty choppy. Apologies! We're working on making sure it doesn't happen again.

He’s the author of two published books - "This is What it Sounds Like," about the cognitive signatures of individual music preferences, and "A Billion Wicked Thoughts," an analysis of human sexuality through the impartial lens of web searches. who has previously appeared on the DemystifySci podcast to explain how we’ve had a solution to the hard problem of consciousness for decades, and is back to discuss his upcoming book, "Large Gods for Small Children," a memoir where he lays out his lifelong relationship with Intex, and extraterrestrial intelligence. Ogas explains how his relationship with these cosmic minds has granted him insight into the mathematics of consciousness, a deeper understanding of the nature of the universe, and insight into the cosmic battles waged between distant advanced civilizations. Ogas explains how these interactions have led him to the mathematics of consciousness, an understanding of how the universe is made of minds, and perspective on the cosmic conflicts. 00:00:00 Go! 00:05:25 The Hard Problem 00:10:28 Biology of Pain 00:16:16 Patreon Ask 00:19:23 Where is the conscious resonance at? 00:25:35 ET Contact 00:35:50 Psychedelics as Portal 00:48:03 Axiomized Minds 00:53:41 Maze of Souls 00:58:15 To Create a Supermind 01:12:16 On the Verge of Death 01:25:52 DemystifySci 01:30:26 Higher Purpose 01:33:08 Mystic Mindset 01:43:19 Organizing Around Shared Values 01:51:09 Functional Compassion 01:56:32 Rainbow Black 02:09:53 Carl Sagan & Little Green Men 02:17:26 All We Have is Purpose 02:28:26 Closing Thoughts 02:39:10 Aiming Up 02:43:05 Math as Morality? Endless War - Dr. Jeremi Suri, University of Texas, Austin - DSPod #26828 Jul 202402:31:56

Dr. Jeremi Suri is a professor of Public Affairs and History at the University of Texas, Austin whose recent work explores the idea that the American civil war never ended. Suri argues that the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse at the end of the Civil War was just a superficial conclusion of outright hostilities, not a true end to the massive division that ran across America during colonial times. Our conversation with Suri centers around the question of where these divisions come from, what has entrenched them, why the same social rifts are opening not just in America, but all around the world. Most importantly, we wrestle with what can be done about a seeping wound of discontent that refuses to heal. Missing Mechanisms at the Origin of Life - Dr. James Tour, Rice University06 Jul 202302:31:02

Dr. James Tour is a Professor of Chemistry, Materials Science and Nanoengineering at Rice University who comes to defend a bold claim: that origin of life researchers are completely clueless about the mechanisms by which life arose on Earth. We start out with talking about Tour’s chemistry work, which includes a method of producing no cost hydrogen fuel and graphene too cheap to meter, the foundations on which he’s built his science empire, and get down to the vital chemistry questions that need to be answered before we can figure out what the earliest cells could have looked like.

Resonance Theory of Consciousness - Dr. Stephen Grossberg, Boston University29 Jun 202302:44:46

Dr. Stephen Grossberg is a cognitive scientist, theoretical psychologist, neuroscientists and mathematician who, with Gail Carpenter, is the originator of Adaptive Resonance Theory - an explanation of how we learn without catastrophic forgetting. Needle in the Hay Sense-Making - Drs. M.S. DeLay & A.V. Bendebury DSPod #26726 Jul 202401:50:46

The last few weeks we've had some really explosive theories on the show, which have caused a stir in the comments and beyond. We sit down to talk about the philosophy behind why we believe exploring far out theories is so important, and use Paul Feyerabend's Against Method as the backbone for our discussion. We introduce the idea of scientific anarchy, which encourages us to lean into the uncomfortable reality that ideas cannot be prized simply because of their age, or their apparent agreement with existing data. The history of science is littered with theories that were wrong but useful, detectors that are engineered to give us the results we are expecting, and the weighty knowledge that the absence of evidence tells us nothing about what we'll find when we take a closer look at the inner workings of nature. Is There Really a Hard Problem of Consciousness? - Dr. Joscha Bach, Artificial Intelligence Researcher13 Jun 202304:31:19

Joscha Bach is a German artificial intelligence researcher and cognitive scientist who works on on cognitive architectures, mental representation, emotion, social modeling, and multi-agent systems. We got connected over the hard problem of consciousness - namely, why do people seem to think it’s so hard? During our conversation we deal with the foundational questions of the technological future being built in Silicon Valley, the fever dream of machine intelligence, and try to understand why people seem to think that there’s even such a thing as the hard problem of consciousness in the first place.

Göbekli Tepe Out of Younger Dryas Impact - Dr. Martin Sweatman, U of Edinburgh08 Jun 202302:01:53

Dr. Martin Sweatman is a chemical engineer at the University of Edinburgh working in both statistical mechanics and archaeoastronomical studies of symbolism at Göbekli Tepe. Our conversation with Dr. Sweatman circles around the missing pieces in our modern narrative of the emergence of civilization after the last glaciation. Might Göbekli Tepe have not been the first city but merely the oldest remaining after an extraordinary cataclysm like the Younger Dryas impact?

Giant Planets Orbiting Tiny Stars - Dr. Edward Bryant, UCL Space & Climate Physics28 May 202302:06:24

Dr Edward Bryant is a Research Fellow in Exoplanets Characterisation at University College London. His research has uncovered the existence of giant planets in orbit around low-mass stars, potentially upsetting our current paradigms of solar system formation. We discuss the detection of planets in strange places, the odd distribution of heavy stuff in our solar system, and the art of piercing the veil of uncertainty that hangs over our understanding of the cosmos Check out Bryant’s exoplanet paper here: https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/521/3/3663/7069338 Check out the SciTech Daily article on it here: https://scitechdaily.com/challenging-widely-accepted-theory-of-planetary-formation-small-stars-may-host-bigger-planets-than-thought/ Read more of his work here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/mssl/people/dr-edward-bryant Support the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Tell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub

Grand Unified Theory of Consciousness - Dr. Ogi Ogas, Harvard University25 May 202302:37:12

Dr. Ogi Ogas is a theorist, author, and former visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he serves as Project Head for the Individual Mastery Project. Ogas boasts to be in possession of the end theory of consciousness, and he makes a rock solid case for it. You be the judge. Our conversation begins with an introduction to the problems of consciousness and walks through a topological framework for the emergence of increased complexity in biological awareness, culminating in rare cases of self-consciousness, perhaps best exemplified by our own species. We then consider the future evolution of consciousness as humans reach outward for the stars. Tell us what you think! At the Edge of Quantum Biology - Dr. Clarice Aiello, UCLA21 May 202301:59:26

Dr. Clarice D. Aiello is a quantum engineer studying how subatomic physics affects biology. She has engineered quantum nanosensors that harness ambient systemic energies. Our conversation begins with the mechanics of electron spin and in the end imagines how cheap, readily available, technology - like that found in your cellphone - might be used in the future for personal quantum diagnostics and healing. It sounds far out but it's solidly grounded in empirical lab work. Let us know what you think! Institutional Capture at Every Level - Leighton Akio Woodhouse, Public19 May 202302:23:25

Leighton Akio Woodhouse is a journalist, Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker, and co-founder of Public, a Substack focused on cities, energy, and the environment. His recent work has been focused on untangling the urban decay that is sweeping through American cities, with a focus on the downwing incentive structures that have created a self-perpetuating homeless industrial complex whose existence depends on the perpetuation of the homelessness crisis. We talk about the decay of San Francisco, how the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and the chokehold of emotion-first activism. We also discuss the Twitter Files, widespread involvement of former intelligence officials at high levels at tech companies, and the end goal of clamping down on discourse.

Quantized Inertia, Mach, & Interconnected Atomics - Dr. Mike McCulloch14 May 202301:20:19

Dr. Mike McCulloch is a University of Plymouth lecturer in geomatics, physicist, and author who is best known for developing Quantized Inertia, a cosmological explanation for Newton’s first law that states an object in motion will tend to stay in motion. We discuss the principles of quantized inertia as a derivation of photon pressure at the cosmological horizon in the form of Unruh radiation, the path to formulating an mathematical formulation for an everything-is-connected universe, and how the Casimir effect that emerges from the theory can be used to engineer novel, combustion-less propulsion mechanisms. Dark History of Manmade Disease - Forrest Maready, Author - DSPod #26621 Jul 202403:25:39

Forrest Maready is an author, filmmaker, and radio show host who is driven by trying to understand alternate versions of the history of religion, culture, and disease. He's written a number of books on the subject of environmental toxins and disease, which include radical revisions to the story of polio and autism. In this conversation we explore his somewhat radical perspective - that the vast majority of disease, if not all disease, is the result of industrial pollutants getting into our bodies and wreaking havoc. Industrial Alchemy in Ancient Egypt - Geoffrey Drumm, Land of Chem07 May 202303:43:12

Geoffrey Drumm is an Egyptologist and self-taught chemist who has theorized that several ancient Egyptian pyramids were not pharaonic burial chambers - they were industrial manufacturing plants for ammonia based fertilizer and the raw materials used for metallurgy. His presentation begins inside the red pyramid, whose three chambers mirror the three stages of nitrogen fixation used in the Haber-Bosch process we depend upon today. We talk about the physical evidence his investigations have uncovered, the difficulty of doing research in Egypt, and pervasive belief of a primitive history for ancient civilizations Support the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Tell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub

Will & Meaning in Living Beings - Dr. Michael Levin, Tufts University01 May 202301:50:10

Michael Levin is the Vannevar Bush Chair of the Biology department and director the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology at Tufts University who is focused on understanding the cellular motivations that govern biological systems. In other words, why do cells create the bodies that they do, and what are the environmental conditions that need to change in order to rewire the bodies that these cells will make? The successes of his work, including permanently altered body plants in planarian flatworms and synthetic bodies from frog skin cells, have significantly challenged our limited perspectives about the extent to which biological systems have wants and needs that can only be satisfied through the fulfillment of an inherent program. We talk new perspectives on the nature of bodies, teleophobia, the game of life, and much more. Century of Vanishing Astrophysical Bodies - Dr. Beatriz Villarroel, VASCO24 Apr 202301:38:13

Dr. Beatriz Villarroel is a researcher at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics who is the brains behind the VASCO project - a study of Vanishing and Appearing Sources During a Century of Observation. The project asked a stunningly simple question - if we compare photographic plates of the cosmos taken in the 1950s with photographs taken in the last few years, would there be much of a difference? To their great surprise, Villarroel and colleagues discovered more than 100,000 mismatches between the two datasets. We talk to her about the missing objects, the art of astronomical observation, how to stay creative in a system that rewards incremental progress, and her ambitious goal of identifying and recovering an extraterrestrial object from within our solar system. In Exile from Greenpeace - Dr. Patrick Moore, Activist17 Apr 202302:48:26

Dr. Patrick Moore was a founding member of Greenpeace who served as both director and president in the early days of the organization before leaving due to divergent philosophies about the future of the green movement. These days, his most controversial claim has to do with our obsession with CO2 as the sole marker of planetary health. We dive into the surprisingly robust science of why he thinks so, the world of politically motivated science, and uncover some significant disagreements along the way. Buckle up, it's a bumpy ride. Earth's Strange Twin: the Venus Paradox - Dr. James Garvin, NASA13 Apr 202301:50:21

Dr. James Garvin is the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Chief Scientist, currently focused on two main projects - massive terrestrial impacts, and the mysteries hidden beneath the clouds of Venus. Based off of lunar and Martian observations, Garvin believes that our models for the history of impacts on Earth might be nowhere near severe enough. Then there’s also the ambitious DAVINCI mission to Venus, which will launch in 2029 with the goal of getting a glance under Venus’ thick cloud atmosphere for the first time since the Soviet Venera landers of the 1970s. We talk impacts, solar system formation, oddities of tectonic activity in the solar system, and the twin history of Venus and Earth. Reverse Physics - Dr. Gabriele Carcassi, U. Michigan, DSPod #26518 Jul 202402:59:56

Prof. Gabriele Carcassi is a University of Michigan Physicists who became obsessed with a simple question during his training. Where do the mathematics of physics actually come from? They are handed down to us as students as if they were immutable laws of nature… but are they? Or are they simply mathematical transformations that have long ago left the realm of reality and made their home in the spheres of theory? It turns out that we really don’t know where the line between pure theory and physical reality can be drawn! Luckily, Carcassi and his research partner Prof. Christine Aidala have dedicated their time to deciphering what they call the “Assumptions of Physics,” a project which they hope will let them take apart the basic principles of the foundational science and put the whole thing back together again in a way that makes much more sense. Pitfalls of Willful Ignorance - Dr. John G Williamson, CERN, Quicycle30 Mar 202302:38:57

Dr. John G. Williamson is a founding member of the Quicycle Society, and is back for a third conversation - this time about cosmological, electrical, and institutional questions. He is a veteran of CERN and the R&D division of Philips research who spends his days thinking about the unanswered problems in physics. In his view, there are foundational problems with key physical theories that scientists ignore at their own peril. Solutions to these inconsistencies will not be found at the end of a massively complicated equation that no one really understands - they will be found in the intuitive exploration of natural phenomena. We discuss the nature of the electron, possible causes for red shift, an explanation for charge, and the future of science. there are problems in physics that we can't keep ignoring Support the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Tell us what you think in the comments or on our Discord: https://discord.gg/MJzKT8CQub
