Physics vs Mysticism - Dr. M.S. DeLay & A. V. Bendebury, DS Pod #279

Season 1 · Episode 279

jeudi 5 septembre 2024Duration 01:53:17

We sit down for a discussion about the futility of rationalism, by way of William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. We start with the question of utopias, and try to diagnose why, if they're doomed to fail, it's still worth trying to create them, and then move on to the question of the scientific project - which seems to be an attempt to create a rationalist utopia. James' take on mystical experiences - that they're nearly universally accessible, though rarely long dwelt in - seems to suggest that there is something about the tremulous experience of being alive that will leave us with the feeling of being part of something larger than ourselves no matter how rational we get. So, then, if we can never escape the mystical experience, is it worth trying? And if it is, and we take the project of science to be worthwhile, where does the mystic live? Magic, CIA Research & ESP Abilities - Dr. Dean Radin, IONS - DSPod #278

dimanche 1 septembre 2024Duration 02:42:19

Dr. Dean Radin is an investigator of parapsychological phenomena whose career has spanned Bell Labs, Stanford Research Institute as part of the Stargate Project, Princeton, and who is now the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Radin approaches his search for evidence of psychokinesis and extrasensory perception as an engineer, and has spent his career building devices that can be reproducibly (though subtly) affected by the minds of experimental subjects that have ranged from his colleagues at Bell Labs to thousands of participants from across the web. We talk about how the buttoned up engineer started studying such esoteric phenomena, working for the CIA, how there's no proof that can convince a skeptic, his recent research that suggests that mental action can affect the outcome of quantum experiments, and his radically transparent approach to research.

Henry Corbin's Poetic Fabric of Reality - Dr. Tom Cheetham, Author - DS Pod #269

Season 1 · Episode 269

jeudi 1 août 2024Duration 03:03:43

Dr. Tom Cheetham is a naturalist, poet, and author who has spent the last few decades of his life engrossed in the work of Henry Corbin, who inspired a century of studies of the unconscious mind. Corbin’s aim was to understand the line that cut across the mystic traditions of the world, in the hopes of finding something that was the universal ground of being. To that end, he searched for answers in the work of everyone from Continental philosophers, to the medieval gnostics, to the Persian mystics and honed in on something he called the “imaginal realm,” inhabited by angels who guide their human charges towards a life of meaning and profundity. We talk with Cheetham about the nature of inspiration, the universal ground of experience, the search for truth, and the visionary power of psychedelic experiences Sign up for our Patreon and get episodes early + join our weekly Patron Chat https://bit.ly/3lcAasB AND rock some Demystify Gear to spread the word: https://demystifysci.myspreadshop.com/ Check out (00:00) Go! Superconductors, Material Atomics, and Electron Oscillators - Dr. Inna Vishik, UC Davis DSci #180

Season 1 · Episode 180

jeudi 24 août 2023Duration 01:54:31

Dr. Inna Vishik is a professor of Physics at UC Davis, where her lab studies the spectroscopic properties of exotic condensed matter. We dig down into how she sees the atomic landscapes she studies, the significance of mathematical descriptions that show up all over the place, harmonic oscillators at the scale of an electron, and why physics is perfectly happy to deal in abstractions, even when better models might be available. Urability, Origins of Life, and Limits of Phenotype - Dr. Bruce Damer, Biota Institute DSci #179

Season 1 · Episode 179

dimanche 20 août 2023Duration 02:59:53

Dr. Bruce Damer is an astrobiologist, computer scientist, and director of the BIOTA Institute at UC Santa Cruz with a compelling theory for the origin of life on Earth. Damer and his colleagues have proposed that life didn't begin at the bottom of the ocean, or at a hydrothermal vent, or in the irradiated clouds of the early Earth. They propose the formation of the earliest cells out in the open, at the margins of vernal hot spring pools filled with amino acids, minerals, and proto-nucleotides carried to Earth by a constant shower of organic-rich micrometeorites. We talk about the hardest questions on Earth, why hydrothermal vents are a dead end, why origin of life researchers don't throw hot coffee at each other any more, and how figuring out where we came from might let us keep going for long enough to reach the stars. Check out Bruce's work at the Biota Institute: https://biota.org/ (00:00:00) Go! (00:00:17) Who is Bruce Damer? (00:03:08) Why is Origins of Life Research So Contentious? Ancient Vedic Cosmology Echoes Modern Physics - Sid Chhabra, DSci 178

Season 1 · Episode 180

jeudi 17 août 2023Duration 01:27:07

Sid Chhabra is a computer scientist and scholar of Vedic cosmology. His research has revealed startling quantitative similarities between the predictions of ancient works and modern mathematical physics. Fundamentally, however, Sid approaches cosmology as an integrative art that requires one to put themselves into a cosmic context on a daily basis. He argues that cosmology is a study rich with meaning for each person's journey through this world. Mythic Rock Art and Ancient Migration - Bernie Taylor, Before Orion

jeudi 10 août 2023Duration 02:20:18

Bernie Taylor is a Naturalist, Archaeoastronomer and Author who has written extensively about the true stories of human evolution, as told through the mythological portrayals in rock art found across Europe and Africa. Through a comparative examination of the rock art found in Spain’s El Castillo cave, at the Rock of Gibraltar, and in South Africa’s Rising Star Cave, Taylor paints a picture of a highly mobile, artistic tribe of humans that completed massive migrations and carried with them the cultural imprint of their celestial maps of meaning. Dr. Li Min is a professor of prehistoric and Bronze Age Chinese archaeology at UCLA, who focuses on state formation, social memory, and story telling. He is also a key player in the excavation of Shimao, a site on the Yellow River in Northwest China that displays iconography from four thousand years ago that looks strikingly Mesoamerican. We discuss the context in which Shimao rose to become a major regional power, the heady interaction sphere between the city and the shamanic Steppe and Altai cultures that surrounded it, the persistence of imagery unchanged across thousands of years, and much more. Rising Waters, Hidden History - Samo Burja, Bismarck Analysis

jeudi 3 août 2023Duration 01:54:45

Samo Burja is a research fellow at the Long Now Foundation, the founder of Bismarck Analysis, and originator of the Great Founder theory, who is driven by a simple question. Why have all prior civilizations failed, and how can ours escape the same fate? Our conversation focuses on the ways in which getting good data is almost impossible. Civilizations rise, fall, and their skeletons get scavenged to nourish what comes next. Floods sweep the landscape clean of the best laid plans, and rising sea levels bury the rest. We talk about the future of the academy, the search for buried treasures, and informed searches for long-lost cultures. Note - we had some technical difficulties at the end here, and so the audio for the last 20 minutes is pretty choppy. Apologies! We're working on making sure it doesn't happen again.
