Spotify for Podcasters

The Curve is a platform to learn more about money. To change the stereotype that these conversations are typically boring, and only for men in suits. Victoria has worked in the finance and investing world for 13 years, and Sophie is a total novice. Learn alongside her as she asks all the questions you're thinking, but might feel a little embarrassed to ask. This podcast will give you all the tools and knowledge to achieve financial freedom, as well as (hopefully) having a laugh along the way.

New episodes every Monday and Wednesday!

Investing in AI: Are We Too Late to the Party?

Season 2 · Episode 112

jeudi 27 mars 2025Duration 23:12

AI investing - too hot to handle or just heating up? In this episode, we bring in Zoe Wallis from Tempo for a Temperature Check on the AI boom. Sophie, Vic, and Zoe dive into whether AI is still the golden ticket or if the train has already left the station. Plus, the all-important question: how do you actually invest in AI without just throwing your money at the next shiny tech stock? We talk Nvidia, diversification (aka not putting all your eggs in one AI-powered basket), and how to spot the next big trend before it’s too trendy. Oh, and yes - there are some solid gold rush analogies. You’re welcome.

How a Money Diary Can Make You Wealthier & Wiser, with Frances Cook (from the archives).

Season 1 · Episode 156

mercredi 26 mars 2025Duration 35:44

Blast from the past alert! We’re dusting off an oldie (but a very, very goodie) with the legendary Frances Cook – finance journalist, author, and NZ’s OG money podcaster. In this episode, we dive into the magic of keeping a money diary (it’s a game-changer, trust us), break down the whole good debt vs. bad debt debate (spoiler: your wardrobe might not be an "investment"), and unpack the satellite approach to investing – aka the strategy that lets you have your financial veggies and a little dessert. Plus, Frances spills on her best and worst investments (ahem, crypto-adjacent oopsie), and we debate whether giving up oat milk lattes will actually fix your financial future (spoiler: nope). If you’re a beginner investor or just need a refresher on the fundamentals, this one’s for you.

lundi 3 mars 2025Duration 40:52

Warren Buffett is sitting on a record-breaking $334 billion in cash - but why? This week, we dive into what the legendary investor’s latest moves reveal about the stock market and whether we should be cautious right now. We also break down Tesla’s dramatic drop, the impact of Elon Musk’s political moves, and whether the stock is becoming a bargain or a brand to avoid. Meanwhile, YouTube has officially overtaken Spotify as the most popular podcast platform in the U.S., and it’s quietly becoming a serious competitor to Netflix. With Google (YouTube’s parent company) seeing strong revenue growth, is it the under-the-radar tech stock to watch? Gosh we’ve a lot to unpack!

TCW63: An update on crocs, inflation, and Soph’s love life.

dimanche 14 avril 2024Duration 24:34

It’s been another wild week in the stock market, but before we get into that - do you remember those emotional charts therapists use to help decipher how you're feeling? No? Just imagine Vic pointing to overwhelm and Soph at the excitement section with a hard launch we are all here for. And although the stock market's been pointing at depressed lately, there is one company you might consider investing in. It's share price has risen 40% this year alone! A small hint...they make arguably the most comfortable, and least subtle shoes in the world.

RTC110: Pay off the mortgage or invest? Part Two.

mardi 9 avril 2024Duration 37:19

Although this 2-parter seems somewhat like Sophie's voice messages; a little rambly, and at times totally off-topic, we hope that by the end, you'll come away with a better understanding of what's best for your financial situation: paying off the mortgage early, or investing the extra funds. Investing may make you more money than paying off debt, but the savings from interest on mortgage payments can be significant. This is why it’s important to determine (based on your personal circumstances) whether investing would be more beneficial than paying off your mortgage, or vice versa!

TCW62: GenZ, Millenials or boomers - who needs the most for their 20 year holiday?

dimanche 7 avril 2024Duration 25:11

WARNING: To avoid the world's biggest spoiler dropped by Vic at 7:40 about the series 'One Day', skip to 8:30.

Following a significant tumble in Tesla's share price, the car giant finds itself ranked as the second-worst performing company among the top 500 listed on the U.S. stock market. Taylor Swift is one of the newest additions to list of global billionaires list! And despite their being more people holding billions than ever before, the rest of us according to Calvin Kleins falling share price, are holding on to our holey underwear.

RTC109: Pay off the mortgage or invest? Part One

mardi 2 avril 2024Duration 42:45

Today we’re discussing one of the grey areas we get asked about a lot; whether to prioritise investments, or paying off the mortgage. And although Soph's spent the past few days skilfully dodging emails and meetings using Vic's mysterious operation as her golden ticket, this week we're back in business. As both mortgage and interest rates seesaw, it can be difficult to know where to put your money and what will be best in the long run. In this episode, we’re discussing ways in which you can decipher what’s best for you. Spoiler: It’s personal (sorry Soph!) Part two coming next week…

TCW61: Reddit’s IPO, Mcdonalds’ new menu item and the cocoa crisis.

dimanche 31 mars 2024Duration 26:17

After last week's announcement, we were delighted to receive so many positive messages and words of wisdom but there was one message in particular telling us to cut to the chase so this week, we're getting straight to it (just after Soph shares a moustache story that has no financial relevance). Sorry Nance.

Okay, okay, Reddit shares take a turn after the IPO last week (where the company goes public so you can buy shares) as the dreaded short-sellers arrive, McDonald’s makes a sweet deal with the bakery company that’s had decade-long growth, and WeWork’s Adam Neumann makes a comeback. Oh, and If you recently received an easter egg that looked slightly smaller than usual, you may be experiencing first-hand shrinkflation due to the cocoa shortage… eek!

RTC108: Our most inspirational story to date.

mardi 26 mars 2024Duration 44:45

Today we welcomed to the studio (otherwise known as Vic's Niece and Nephew's playroom) one of our listeners; Sophia Cich, who told us one of the coolest investing stories we've ever heard. Finding the balance between spending money now for fun vs saving for the future is pretty hard to gauge. How far in the future should you be saving for? How long should you leave your investments for? And can you enjoy any of your investments along the way? Sophia’s story is a great example of how to invest for the future while playing with the fun money - setting a goal, working towards it and reaping the rewards when it's reached.

dimanche 24 mars 2024Duration 04:59
