Episode 79 | The Profit Early Method: What to launch first when you’re getting started with digital products03 May 202100:22:24

"Gemma, I have all these ideas... what should I launch first?"

I get that question in my DMs a lot :)

When you are looking to branch out into digital products and add a 1:many offer to your business, you’ll start looking into it and likely get overwhelmed at all the options out there.

Do you create a…

A mini offer.A course.A membership.A group coaching program.Heck, maybe even an eBook?

After creating and selling digital products since 2016 and working with thousands of students, here’s what I know to be true: All of these things can work.

One type of offer doesn’t "win" compared to the others.

They can all be a success if you give them enough time and effort.

So what CAN make a difference to how quickly you grow your business?

--> The order in which you roll out your digital offers <--

In today's episode, I'm diving into what I like to call the Profit Early Method!

This is the exact method I used to generate $500K in revenue last year!

So hit that play button!

Episode 78 | The Mini Offer Myth (everything you need to know to make those $27 products profitable)26 Apr 202100:20:35

Ever thought about launching a mini offer?

Maybe you're looking to branch out into digital products for the first time, these can look like an amazing option.

Create something once, and sell it over and over again.

Something with no coaching or interactive component.

And you might think it’ll be way easier to sell because it’s cheap!

I mean, who wouldn’t buy this awesome thing for just $27? It’s a steal!

But unfortunately it’s just not that easy. Let's say you choose to price your offer at $37 and you want to make $10K.

Let’s assume a 10% conversion rate on the sales (which is generous, by the way), you’d have to get 2000 people to land on your sales page. That’s A LOT of eyeballs. Even if you have a big audience, it’s going to be hard for you to get 2000 people to land on that sales page, particularly month after month to keep profiting.

The way you have big success with mini offers is by using paid advertising to drive eyeballs to that sales page. If you want to make those $10k months, you have to be running ads to get those 2000 eyeballs.

But now you’ve got the cost of the ads (and maybe hiring an ads manager). So that $10k just took a hit. If you are getting a 2X return on your ad spend, it means you will need to spend $5000 to get that $10000 in sales. And if you hired an ads agency? Add another $2000 in management fees. That $10k just turned into $3k.

We haven’t included any expenses like software, a customer support team member you might need to handle your inbox, and any potential refund requests. See how the money can look good from the outside ("easy 10k months!") but isn’t so great when you peel back the curtain?

It was only after I had healthy revenue in my business and could invest in an ads team that I started venturing into mini offers!

I today's episode, I'm pulling back the curtain and talking all about what it really looks like to lead with a mini offer!

Let's dive in!

Episode 77 | The 4 Lessons I’ve Learned from Million Dollar/Year Business Owners 19 Apr 202100:16:54

I’ve been doing the online business thing for a hot minute now.

I got into blogging back in 2010.

Then shifted into teaching and creating courses in 2017.

And in that time, between the programs I’ve enrolled in, peer masterminds I’ve been a part of, and conferences I’ve attended, I have been around a lot of entrepreneurs who make more than $1million/year in their businesses.

I have had a chance to chat with them, understand their business model, and get a sense of the back-end of their operations.

Here are some lessons that being around $1m/year business owners have taught me…

#1 --> They don’t necessarily know anything more than you or I do. Sometimes it’s just the fact that they’ve been doing it for longer.

Bottom line: Consistency and time in the marketplace matter.

#1 --> They don’t necessarily know anything more than you or I do. Sometimes it’s just the fact that they’ve been doing it for longer.

Bottom line: Consistency and time in the marketplace matter.

#1 --> They don’t necessarily know anything more than you or I do. Sometimes it’s just the fact that they’ve been doing it for longer.

Bottom line: Consistency and time in the marketplace matter.

#4 --> A lot of them have huge expenses every month. Team costs and ad budgets are usually the two biggies. There’s nothing wrong with a lot of expenses, so long as your profit margins remain healthy.

But behind some of the doors I’ve been privy to, there have been many who make a million dollars a year, but are only profiting say 10% or 15% of it. In the course creation business model, that kinda sucks.

I’d rather have a smaller, simpler business that puts $150k in my pocket every year than a giant company that stresses me out and pays me $100k a year.

Bottom line: Gross revenue doesn’t really mean anything. Look beyond the click-bait number.

Sure, we all want to make a million a year in revenue.

I think it’s a great goal to shoot for.

But I’m far more interested in growing a business that, although it may not look as “big” on paper, pays me a stellar salary so that I can live my version of a dream life outside of my business.

When you get past the fancy, click-bait numbers, isn’t that exactly what you want too?

Be realistic about the type of business you’re building and whether it’s in line with what you truly want.

Oh and know that it's totally cool to be doing a bunch of random things to make cash, while you're building that "ideal" business.

I've got an episode coming out next week all about the super weird gigs I've had that made me revenue, while I built up my course business.

The list is long + hilarious!

If online courses or group programs are part of that future for you, grab your seat for Online Course Prep School if you haven't already.

Episode 76 | ANNOUNCEMENT: Online Course Prep School [FREE EVENT!]15 Apr 202100:13:38

Exciting announcement!

Before I drop all the details, here’s the quick back story.

You know I’m the gal who turns creative entrepreneurs into successful course creators.

I work with 1:1 service providers, coaches, creatives, content creators, and other entrepreneurs to take what they know and launch courses, group programs and digital offers.

But what happens if you don’t have a clear idea yet on what your course should be about?

What if you are worried that your audience isn’t big enough yet?

What if you don’t have the first clue about where to really start?

I know that jamming everything into a 1-hour webinar really isn’t enough (and my #CourseClass webinar I have now mostly assumes you have a grasp on your course topic and audience).

So I decided to address these foundational concepts in a brand new LIVE event for anyone who is thinking about launching a course.

Introducing…

Online Course Prep School: Define your profitable program idea, map out your offer, and jumpstart your waitlist … in just 5 days

Register here: https://gemmabonhamcarter.com/prepschool

5 days.

Live training.

A pop-up community.

And a ton of clarity on how to move forward with your idea and get it launched.

When I started mapping this whole event out, I decided to charge for it.

I wanted it to attract just the action-takers. The ones who are serious about learning, implementing, and launching something in 2021.

Even if it was a small investment - like $19 - I was planning on making it paid.

But then guess what?

We went back into a “stay at home” order here in Ontario (so the 2 days/week my kids were in forest school disappeared) and I had to make my life as EASY as possible again.

Which meant that building out a sales page, a checkout process, and doing all of the work to make a paid event happen went out the window.

So what does that mean for you?

It means that I’m still going ahead with the whole event but making it F-R-E-E.

So take advantage!

(In the future I’ll probably run this again as a paid event… so this is the time to hop in!)

If you know that your current business model isn’t creating the freedom, growth, or revenue you’re capable of...

If you know that there’s a little voice telling you you’re meant for more...

If you are ready to branch out from what you’ve always done and step into a new role as a teacher and mentor…

… then go save your seat at Online Course Prep School.

Episode 75 | What Makes a “Best on the Market” Offer (and what we can learn from Shark Tank)29 Mar 202100:25:41

Today I want to talk about offers -the products, programs, and things we create to sell to our audience.

Sometimes creating an offer seems overwhelming and we don’t know where to start.

Other times we’ve created something already, but it might not be hitting the mark quite right and it needs a makeover.

As a course creator or digital product entrepreneur, it all comes down to the offer. Whether it’s a course, a group program, a mini product… we need to get that part right in order for the money to flow.

There are 3 important lessons that go into creating great, sell-able offers.

The kind of offers that end up as the best-in-market for their niche.

They are things that I have learned in my 5+ years of selling courses and after working with hundreds of students on offer creation.

This is nothing about bonus stacks, or copywriting, or marketing hacks…

To learn what they are (and how we can learn some serious lessons from Shark Tank) tune in to this week’s episode of the podcast.

Episode 74 | Stop Over Complicating Your Course Launch22 Mar 202100:11:55

There is something that has been coming up over and over again with my students and clients who want to create and launch online courses, and I need to address it today.

It’s a theme - a pattern - that keeps showing up and I know it is holding so many people back. Maybe even you.

Today I want to share what it is, and what you can do about it to make sure it doesn’t keep you stuck.

Over the last few months I have been doing a ton of 1:1 coaching calls with new clients and students who want to launch their first course, and there is this one thing that keeps coming up.

And it’s over planning.

It’s analysis paralysis.

It’s filling your wall with sticky notes, but then hesitating on turning them into an offer.

It’s mapping out your course modules and lessons over and over again, but not moving beyond that.

The idea that things need to be perfect first. Or that you need a bigger audience. Or that there is going to be some sign from the Universe that will tell you it’s the right moment to put your idea out there.

But actually → It’s all fear.

That perfect moment is never going to happen. It’s going to feel scary. It’s supposed to.

So I want you to use this as your sign to RIP OFF THE BANDAID.

It’s time to put your idea, that little voice inside your head, that course you’ve been humming and hawing about, to finally put it out there.

Episode 70 | How launching is changing in 2021, with Launch Copy Coach Chelsea Wallace01 Feb 202100:31:37

2020 was a transformative year in a lot of ways, including stirring up some major shifts in the online business space.

I think it’s safe to say that most entrepreneurs are thinking about their businesses with a whole new lens and want to make sure they feel authentic and in alignment with their values.

So…

Are we going to spend 2021 with “business as usual” launches?

Using the same tactics that we’ve always used to sell our programs and products?

Chelsea Wallace, The Launch Copy Coach, sure doesn’t think so.

Chelsea has worked behind the scenes on launches for some giants in the industry - think Marie Forleo, Marley Jaxx, and others - and she has some serious insight on what some of these big trends and shifts look like.

Join us today as we talk about what live launching in 2021 will look like. And get some of Chelsea’s best tips on not only how to survive live launches - but actually thrive and love them.

We believe you are ready to level up your business, and it starts with the CASH KIT.

Can we be super real for a second?

There’s a good chance 2020 threw a wrench in your plans.

Maybe you had big goals about this being the year to start, the year to scale, or the year when you could finally achieve an income spike without the side order of burnout and exhaustion.

Maybe you’re finally sick of your spaghetti-and-meatballs sales strategy… (That’s the one where you throw stuff against the wall to see what sticks, occasionally forking over some dough for a fancy rebrand or a new piece of gear, hoping it’ll level-you-up.)

Or maybe the last 8 months have made you brutally aware of how important it is to diversify your  income streams.

You might be seeing others thriving in the online education space and asking yourself,

Do I have what it takes to make that happen?

These three cheerleaders say F*CK YEAH.

The Digital Entrepreneur’s Cash Kit gives you instant access to all 3 programs that will show you EXACTLY how to make this happen. Because by the way… you ARE ready to monetize your expertise.

And if you’re the kind of hustler who loves to creep the clearance section for the hidden gems at the lowest possible price, you’re gonna love how the CASH KIT snags you a spot in these 3 programs at an all-time discounted rate.

Getting goosebumps? Good, because this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Episode 64 | How Mallory + Laura grew their businesses with online courses in 2020 16 Nov 202000:40:49

Online course businesses are pandemic-proof.

That is one of those lessons that I never thought I would have to learn, but this year I did.

Thankfully, in 2020 I have seen so many online course creators thrive. This isn’t just in my business which has grown like crazy, but also my clients, students and friends have all been seeing success, too.

There has never been a better time to launch a course. Even if you think the market is saturated - it’s not.

Today on the podcast I have two of my business friends - Mallory Rowan and Laura Kelly - telling us why they decided 2020 was the year to finally launch their first online courses.

We get into why they chose the course route, the obstacles that they got stuck on, and ultimately what it has done for their businesses.

After enrolling in my program, Course Creator School, Meghan created and launched her first program - Radical Rest Rhythms. And she tripled her sales goals.

Episode 61 | How to use SEO to get free leads into your business, with Mariah Magazine19 Oct 202000:39:07

Between Instagram, email marketing, doing live videos, and all the things - it can be tough to think about yet another strategy to grow your audience and bring leads into your business.

But there is one area that is often overlooked. Particularly in the digital product world.

And that is SEO. Or search engine optimization.

What if you could rank on the top page of Google for some of the best search terms related to your business?

Imagine having all those hot leads land on your website, turn into subscribers, and eventually buyers.

That you wouldn’t have to stress about your ads strategy or being famous on Instagram.

Pretty dreamy.

That’s what I’m talking about today with Mariah from Mariah Magazine. She’s an SEO expert and we are diving into some of the basic stuff that you can start implementing in your business today to start getting found online.

I loved this conversation. It totally brought me back to my blogging days, where I focused hard on SEO (and spoiler alert - I still get tens of thousands of hits every month on my blog thanks to those highly ranked articles I wrote years ago!).

SEO is a sweet strategy and I was so jazzed to dive into the topic with Mariah. I have a renewed

mission to make it a top priority in my own business over at gemmabonhamcarter.com too.

Let’s roll the tape -

Episode 60 | How I got 40 students into a course I hadn’t created yet12 Oct 202000:15:37

It’s really easy to see where people are at today with their businesses, and frankly feel kinda intimidated by it, but not truly understand what came before. The pivots. The decisions. The strategies.

I’m going to rewind the clock in this episode back to early 2019 when I was ready to shift gears in my business. I had been a course creator for 2 years by this point, but knew that it was time to expand and teach about something new.

Although I’ve taken a lot of missteps in my business and often taken the long road in figuring things out, this one decision I made in early 2019 was a really good one.

It allowed me to pivot, get 40 students into a brand new program I hadn’t even created it, and ultimately set me up to follow the path I’m now on today.

If you are thinking of launching an online course, a membership, or any kind of digital program, you’ll want to hear this one.

I’m sharing all of it in today’s episode, so stay tuned.

Episode 59 | How to pre sell your course before you’ve created it (from a 6-figure course creator)05 Oct 202000:16:23

If there is one thing that sets apart the new course creators from the experienced ones, it’s pre-selling.

Literally every successful entrepreneur in the infopreneur marketplace - anyone who’s out there teaching in their area of expertise - will pre sell their programs before they launch anything new.

What does that mean? How do you do it? And why is it so important?

That’s what I’m diving into in today’s episode. So stay tuned --

Episode 58 | How to price your online course28 Sep 202000:17:16

One of the questions I get asked all the time is “Gemma, what can I charge for my course?”.

Pricing is one of the trickiest things because it’s so different with digital products. This isn’t a physical product with clear cut costs, shipping charges, and margins. This isn’t a service-based business where you can estimate your hours for carrying out a task. This is a digital offer that you create once and sell again and again.

And that can mean that people waaaay underprice for their program. The amount I charged for my first course was laughable.

Or I see the other end of the spectrum, where people see other programs on the marketplace that are highly priced and price their own offer similarly. The danger here is that if you are newer in your space and don’t have the reputation and serious social proof that your program works, the over-inflated price tag will make it hard to sell. Like an over-priced house on Million Dollar Listing LA that goes stale.

You want to end up in the sweet spot. A price that is going to be profitable and worth it for you, demonstrate what you’re teaching is seriously valuable, but also be fair for your customers.

And that’s what we’re diving into in today’s episode. I’m going to tackle the 6 things you need to consider when you price any of your digital offers.

That’s all coming up - so stay tuned!

Episode 55 | The 3-step system to create your online course content WAY more effectively01 Sep 202000:16:31

“Gemma… creating a course sounds way too overwhelming. It’s going to take me forever to record every single video, make the workbooks, and do all the things. I’m out.”

Are you being a negative nelly about actually putting in the work to create your course?

You can’t just make a crappy course and then expect to rake in millions of dollars. (Despite what the bro marketing lamborghini ads would have you believe)

But… the course content creation process doesn’t have to be horribly stressful, either.

It comes down to having a solid course map, batching tasks, and tackling things in the right order.

After creating 5+ courses myself, I’ve kinda got it down to a science.

The last program I made is my most comprehensive and yet took me the least amount of time to pump out.

In this week’s episode I’m sharing with you my 3-step system to creating online course content.

I’m not going to pretend you can whip this out in a couple of days. That’s not how transformative, long-lasting courses are created.

But I am going to share with you exactly how to systematically work through creating your course content so you can end up with a program you are really excited about and proud of. And one that your students will be obsessed with.

Episode 54 | How to make money with webinars25 Aug 202000:16:31

The best strategy I use to make sales in my business? WEBINARS.

I personally use webinars - or masterclasses, as you might’ve seen them referred to - to grow my revenue and enroll students into my courses and programs.

Webinars, combined with email marketing, have been the catalyst to my multiple 6 figure business. They are a game changer. I have had over $10k days - like actual money in the bank, not anticipated payment plan payments - just from hosting a single webinar.

I teach all of my clients and students to use them too..

Like Tara who had a 25% conversion rate on her first webinar, and then had 10 more prospective students waiting for her in her inbox after she got off the webinar.

Or Rachel who made $5k in her launch using a webinar.

Or Vicki, who’s live webinar converted at 15%.

I want that for you too. So I took your questions about webinars and am answering them all today.

  • What is a webinar?
  • Who should use them?
  • What should a webinar include?
  • How much do you give away in a webinar?
  • And my fave - How to make your webinar NOT a huge sleaze fest?

Let’s dive in.

Episode 53 | The FAN Method: How to Make Each Piece of Content Stretch Way Further18 Aug 202000:12:57

Hands up if you feel like you're on the content hamster wheel. Always producing the next thing. Having to be on all the platforms. Showing up with new things to say day-in and day-out.

Let alone actually working on your business, landing customers, and delivering an incredible course or digital offer experience.

It's exhausting.

Enter: The FAN Method.

The FAN Method is a way in which you create one piece of stellar evergreen content - like something really good - and then use it in a bunch of different ways.

Sure, you are going to turn it into a social media post, maybe an Instagram story, or a live video. But it goes beyond that.

You can take that one piece of content and break it up into a bunch of different ways you probably never even considered.

It's the quintessential method of working smarter, not harder.

Essential especially for the parent-entrepreneurs who are working at home right now with the littles! (I feel ya).

Tune in to this week's episode of The Passive Project Podcast or the video version right here (hyperlink to youtube) so you can learn this method of showing up as an expert in your space, but without the content overwhelm.

Less scattered. More organized. Fully intentional.

Episode 49 | Forget "Nail Your Niche" and do THIS instead to make more online course sales14 Jul 202000:16:36

If I had $5 for every time I heard an entrepreneurial guru tell me to “nail my niche” I would’ve made that million a LONG time ago.

And let me be real. I’m pretty sure I have lessons called “how to nail your niche” inside of some of my own programs.

BUT when it comes to selling an online course or digital offer, I want you to forget nailing your niche and instead NAIL YOUR TRANSFORMATION.

The whole reason an online course sells like hotcakes is because people want the results it offers. They want that solution to their pain point. And the faster + easier your course gives them that solution? The easier the purchasing decision is.

If you want your online course to end up on the best-seller list instead of in the course graveyard, you need to get crystal clear on what that BEFORE → AFTER transformation is for your customer.

Let’s say you are marketing a course for moms all about how to homeschool kids.

If you were following the usual “nail your niche” questions, you might end up with this:

My niche are “North American homeschooling moms who are 25-40, have 2+ kids, love to be outside, are athletic + adventurous, live in a rural setting, workout everyday, and eat plant-based”.

And at first it’s all like “Yay! I nailed my customer avatar!”

But all you really have are a bunch of characteristics of that person that are all pretty superficial.

Whether that mom is outdoorsy and adventurous or loves to stay in and binge Bravo while she drinks a glass of pinot doesn’t really have any effect on whether they buy your program or not.

What does matter are those deeper pain points that mom is experiencing.

Where are they BEFORE they take your course? How are they feeling? What do they think? What do they have? What do they believe?

And where are they AFTER they take your program?

Tune in to this week’s podcast episode to get way more clarity on how to nail your course transformation.

Episode 46 | How Goli quit her law career and launched her first digital offer23 Jun 202000:33:14

We all know the stories. The ones of people quitting their soul-sucking jobs and starting the entrepreneurial dream.

My friend Goli is one of those people, leaving her law career behind and starting a whole new business. One that she wasn’t sure would work.

She chronicles her story and others in her popular podcast, Lessons from a Quitter.

Goli is now a Business Coach for others who want to quit their jobs and find their true passion.

I sat down to chat with Goli about how she did it. What did she do first? Where did she start? How did she grow her audience?  And how can others find their true calling?

If you’re feeling drained from your 9-5 gig, want to figure out what actually makes you happy, and you’re looking for a way out, this is a must-listen episode!

Episode 45 | Get started with manifestation (and watch what happens!), with Taylor Rae02 Jun 202000:41:02

We’re going there today, friends.

Into the woo.

Have you ever tried manifesting?

Or read a book about the law of attraction?

It’s either way too out there for some of you, others have little seeds of interest and want to know more, and the rest of you are fully into it and can’t get enough of talking about the law of attraction, rituals, energy, and all things spiritual.

In the last couple of years, I have gotten way more into this stuff. And honestly, the more I explore it, the happier I feel, the more balance and clarity I have in my life, and I have taken aligned actions in my business that have allowed me to grow it, too

So I wanted to talk about some of this stuff with you guys. I’m still a newbie when it comes to this stuff, so i asked my friend and manifestation expert, Taylor Rae to come on for a chat.

In today’s episode, Taylor and I are talking about:

  • What manifestation is and the steps you can take to get started
  • How to releasing fear and limiting beliefs that stop you from stepping up and showing up
  • The MAJEM method to creating a morning ritual that works for you
  • Money blocks that you might be experiencing without even realizing it

Get ready… because we’re getting woo woo up in here. That’s all coming up, on this episode of The Passive Project Podcast.

Episode 44 | How to Create an Online Course with Teachery Founder, Jason Zook26 May 202000:43:19

On this week’s episode I’m sitting down with Jason Zook.

If you don’t know Jason, he started in online business over 10 years ago with a wacky idea called iWearYourShirt, that he turned into a business generating over a million bucks.

He has since written books, launched online courses, coached hundreds of other entrepreneurs, and created a software company.

All with his unique edge. If Jason Zook is doing something - I can guarantee you, he is doing it differently than everybody else.

In today’s show, he and I are digging into online courses. What makes a great course versus one that flops? Is the infopreneur market too saturated? How has he and Caroline (his incredible wife) created and sold over 30 courses between them?

And then we’re diving into Teachery. Jason is the founder Teachery - an online course software platform.

I have used Teachery myself for years to deliver all of my courses, membership, and other digital products and I wanted to have him on the show to speak to how Teachery stands out against the competition, what makes it a great platform to use as a course creator, and what’s coming up with their company.

That’s all on today’s show - so stay tuned.

Episode 43 | Writing Killer Emails For Personality Types, with Tarzan Kay 19 May 202000:30:36

Do you know your enneagram number? Or Myers Briggs type? Or personality colour?

Everyone is into personality tests these days. I’m a 3 on the enneagram, an INTJ on Myers Briggs, and a red on the colour system. I love this stuff!

One of the really cool things that you can do is apply those personality types to your email writing in your business. Whether it’s for your newsletter, a live launch or a sales email in your evergreen funnel.

Learn how to write emails for the Monica’s, Phoebe’s, Joey’s, and Ross’s of the world that are going to get them to read, connect, and take action (if you don’t get that Friends reference, well … I’m not sure we can be friends anymore. haha!).

Today’s podcast guest, copywriter Tarzan Kay, is breaking down the complete colour-coded system for us.

This system will truly change the way you write email. So tune in!
