| Afraid of The Rings of Power S2 reviews | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:19:52 | |
It's September and while prestige TV may still be dropping things of interest, the blockbuster season at the theatre is certainly over, as evidenced by Paul scraping the bottom of the cinematic release barrel to review Afraid for you. It's Blumhouse and horror (supposedly) so Wayne was going nowhere near it - which turns out to be a very smart decision - instead opting to focus his attention on the beginning of the second season of Prime's The Rings of Power (a less smart call).
Should you be heading to the cinemas or settling into the couch to watch TV this week? Hell, maybe getting out and going for a walk while listening to this episode is your best bet ... as The Countdown continues ...

| Deadpool & Wolverine review | 30 Jul 2024 | 00:37:59 | |
34 films deep the MCU fires off its only shot for 2024 by bringing in the R-rated Merc with a Mouth and combining him with a character who had one of the best send offs ever in Wolverine. Can two characters previously owned by 20th Century Fox resurrect the fortunes of the MCU and add to Disney's coffers? Or is this just the latest in a string of failures, even if Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will have a few laughs along the way?
Find out all that the boys think about the violence, the swears, the cameos and the metaness of it all in this review the size of Deadpool's ego, as The Countdown continues ...

| The Slashers - a New Podcast! - preview | 29 Aug 2023 | 00:13:11 | |
Something a bit different this week as the Paul and Wayne could not find a single thing to review that they could agree on or had time to see. So Wayne graciously gives Paul the mic to talk about an upcoming side project he has been working on. Accepting an invitation from Binge Movies' Jason to join him in celebrating the Slasher sub-genre of horror films, Paul has been watching dozens of slasher films in preparation. The show will cover the golden era of the Slasher film craze - from 1980 to 1984 - as Jason and Paul take a carefully curated list of Slashers from each year to form their "Blood Pool". From this pool, they'll give several awards each week ... and argue about many of them in the process :D The show will run for just seven episodes and will commence in mid-September, culminating in the final episode's release in time for Halloween 2023. If this sound like your thing, keep your eyes peeled as episode number one will be available very soon. Then once you've listened, hit up Paul and Jason with your reviews and feedback! Stick around at the end of this little interview for a cool trailer for the show that Jason cut together ... And remember: Don't let them catch you! ... as The Countdown continues.

Countdown #437 Look, Paul and Wayne are sorry about last week, okay? It was a bad idea to try and tell jokes over a podcast and you all knew it. (At least, that's what the download numbers are telling us.) So the boys are apologising by going back to what the masses crave - a television-centric episode! And what a TV episode it is, as Wayne and Paul take on the mammoth task of counting down the very best shows of the entire twentieth century! Both guys (and Wayne in particular) have some classics on their list, as most everything from dramas through sci-fi by way of comedies are covered. Massively big sharks are back in the latest big budget sequel to splash across our cinemas screens. But is Meg 2: The Trench worth venturing out to the cinema for? Does it contain all the fun that you hope for in a killer shark film? Or is it another wet fart of a sequel that has no business making it to screen in this format? Let's put it this way. | Top 10 Funniest Jokes | 11 Aug 2023 | 00:37:49
Countdown #436 The concept episode. Beloved by creators; dreaded by fans. The moment when a TV show decides to do something experimental and not at all in keeping with the norm. It's chance for all those involved with a show to stretch their wings, and maybe set up some back door options for spin-offs. In a podcast's case, a concept episode usually means the hosts need a break from the norm or want to shake things up a bit. And like the TV shows we would often lament as wasting an episode on these crazy ideas, the podcast concept episode doesn't always work. With all that in mind, welcome to the Top 10 Funniest Jokes episode of The Countdown! It's short, it's very much not sweet, and it contains some serious dad jokes as well as some objectionable humour. It also features a heap of submissions from the listeners, so it's not all Wayne and Paul's fault. Oh, who are we kidding? It's Wayne's fault. Find out why as The Countdown takes a side-step, but will continue ...

| Gran Turismo review | 08 Aug 2023 | 00:26:39 | |
When is a video game adaptation not really a video game adaptation? And how meta does something have to be to be really meta (when it's not a company name)? These are the questions the guys are left to ponder having been to see a very early screening of Gran Turismo. | Top 10 Sci-Fi Films of the 21st Century | 04 Aug 2023 | 00:58:55
Countdown #435
This week the boys are commencing a new series of episodes that will bob up every few weeks for the rest of 2023, celebrating the best films of particular genres through the 21st Century. And to kick things off, they're going with a genre near and dear to Paul's heart: Sci-Fi! Given recent weeks, it might be very surprising to learn that not only did Wayne meet this week's brief admirably, but that the co-hosts are generally very agreeable and happy with each other in discussing each other's films. Does that mean some of the "magic" is gone from this episode, or is a less argy-bargy listen exactly what people like (from time to time)? Listen and let the guys know, as The Countdown continues ...

The boys have "Barbied" and now it's time to "'Heimer" as the boys check out Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, Oppenheimer. | Top 10 80s Pop Songs | 26 Jul 2024 | 00:59:06
Countdown #482
Music returns to the Countdown this week as Paul and Wayne square off over their favourite Pop songs of the 1980s! Wayne decides he should acknowledge his perspective on what constitutes Pop music is wrong (or, you know, decides to work within Paul's more specific parameters because it was Paul's birthday this last week), making for what should be a very pleasant and melodic episode.
But no! It doesn't take long before Wayne is busting out some questionable choices, only for Wayne to lose it laughing at Paul's number one. So maybe the question shouldn't be who has the best list this week, but rather, who has the worst...?

| Barbie review | 25 Jul 2023 | 00:25:33 | |
The theatre just got a whole lot more colourful as Barbie opened across the world to much fanfare and positive reviews. The boys were there, front and centre, to see it, and here bring you their instant reaction review, recorded just minutes after walking out from catching the film.
Can a film about a toy that was "just for girls" when it was released in 1959 entertain two middle aged male reviewers who were bemused by how much pink was being worn at the incredible premiere screening? And further to that, can Greta Gerwig do what even Tom Cruise could not and set the box office alight this "summer" season? | Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 review | 18 Jul 2023 | 00:33:16
The latest blockbuster in the franchise to rival James Bond is here and Wayne is in seventh heaven! There's spies and action and thrills and Rebecca Ferg Ferg. But most of all, there's T to the C, and Wayne is so happy, he saw this film twice in a week! | Top 10 Action Comedies with Stew from the SWO podcast | 14 Jul 2023 | 01:19:36
Countdown #432
The incredibly awesome and efficient Stew from the Stew World Podcast joins the boys this week to talk a topic so quintessentially Countdown that it's a surprise it doesn't get re-done every 20 episodes or so: The Top 10 Action Comedies. Stew brings his A-game, while Paul battles tirelessly to suggest adventure films qualify as action-comedies. Wayne, meanwhile, is completely off in his own world banging on about Betamax (for example), so it should come as no surprise that his list is ludicrously all over the place and features less action than your typical walk to the local twerking behind shop. Has Wayne finally jumped the shark? Will Stew regret his decision to return to The Countdown? Won't someone else stand up for the Last Crusade alongside Paul? And who drops the most controversial joke this week? (Hint: It's actually not Wayne.)Learn the answers to all these questions and more, as The Countdown continues ...

| Secret Invasion review | 11 Jul 2023 | 00:26:58 | |
Look around. Do you know your loved ones? REALLY know them? Could they possibly be reptilian aliens able to alter their appearance to look like humans akin to a plot lifted straight from John Carpenter's seminal 80s classic, They Live? Wayne and Paul are intrigued to know whether Marvel can actually produce a good television show, and one based on more grounded spy-type shenanigans seems like a halfway decent place to start. So they're reviewing the first three episodes for you. Does Samuel L Jackson still kick it as Nick Fury? Is this show worth your valuable time? | Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny review | 04 Jul 2023 | 00:34:21
The fifth and final Indiana Jones film is here with Harrison Ford recently decreeing: "When I go, so does Indy." Of course Paul and Wayne were beyond keen to see Harrison don the Fedora and crack the bull whip while growling at everyone who should care that 'It belongs in a museum!", but does that mean the film is any good? Countdown #430
This week the boys are counting down ten of the most recent films they've seen, from worst to best, as their latest Top 10 Last 10. For once, Paul has made some poor decisions regarding what to press play on, while Wayne talks up having made similar bad calls, but it is soon revealed he is telling a porky pie as he seems to enjoy almost all of his films - which, at least in the case of Ghosted, is a HECK of a call. Will every film on Wayne's list generate two to three laughs? Can Paul not have a horror film in his top five? The answers may shock you! Who would have thought that the sequel to a surprise Netflic hit starring Aussie Chris Hemsworth would be the film to break the podcast?! But here we are as Wayne and Paul go to war over the merits (or lack thereof) of Extraction 2, with Wayne boldly making the claim it is a better action film than John Wick 4. Countdown #429 Why break down the best ten films from individual countries on a whole continent when you can group them all together and kill many birds with one stone? That may be Wayne's thinking when it comes to talking the Top 10 Asian Films, or it could be he just hasn't seen enough films from this region of the world. Either way, Paul is frustrated by the number of fantastic films he's had to edit off this list. Two shorter reviews for you this week, as Wayne checks out rom-com Fly Me to the Moon, while Paul goes dark with the serial killer horror, Longlegs, starring everyone's favourite, Nicolas Cage.
Could there BE less in common between two films? Will Wayne be able to get past the 60s fashion in the rom-com to actually determine whether it's a good film or not? And will Paul be all about the shocking violence in his horror film?
Find out which of these films is going to be more your speed, as The Countdown continues ...

| The Flash review | 20 Jun 2023 | 00:33:08 | |
Wayne loves Batman. Especially the Michael Keaton Batman. So The Flash was on his most anticipated films of the year list. Paul had middling to no expectations whatsoever for the beginning of the end of the DCEU as we know it. Who will be disappointed and who will be impressed? Can Any Muscietti and co deliver a great film that will have the fans baying for more of the current Snyderverse? Or is this the final nail in what is turning out to be a very, very long coffin for the DECU? Learn the answers to all these questions and more, as The Countdown continues ... Countdown #428
Paul and Wayne expose their deepest and most shamefully embarrassing stories for the whole world to hear, figuring no-one will listen to this episode. Because who would want to listen to two grown men completely humiliate themselves on a podcast when there are approximately one million other choices out there to listen to ...

| Ted Lasso Season 3 review | 13 Jun 2023 | 00:33:05 | |
Ted Lasso comes to a close after its planned three seasons, and Paul and Wayne are your roving pitch-side reporters, ready to give you the scoop from the latest press conference determining whether this season has been a success ... or a let-down after the heady-heights of Seasons 1 and 2. Should Keely have been relegated to a side plot involving her PR firm? Was Nate done dirty from a story-telling perspective? Were the episodes too padded with side character plot lines? And have Bill Lawrence and co, overall, kicked the winning, extra time goal with this final season? Learn the answers to all these questions and more, as The Countdown continues ... | Top 10 Rock Songs of the 90s | 09 Jun 2023 | 01:00:22
Countdown #427
Paul and Wayne are getting up there in years on this earth, so they don't mind admitting that the '90s was their heyday for most things - including, in Wayne's case, his hair. So it is that there's a special kind of excitement that comes along with a 90s themed countdown, as the boys get to relive aspects of their youth and take the p1ss out of each other in the ways they did some thirty years previously. This week's topic, then, is one which is a little close to Paul's heart, as the boys list their Top 10 Rock Songs of the 90s. Not surprisingly, two completely different lists are produced, but there's a special link between the two number ones which no-one could have ever seen coming :D Find out just what that is as The Countdown continues ...

| Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse review | 06 Jun 2023 | 00:36:34 | |
Four and a half years on from the original, Miles Morales swings back into theatres with one of the most anticipated films of the year (at least as far as The Countdown is concerned), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Can this one possibly re-capture the magic of Into the Spider-Verse and even be half as good? Will Wayne's inner artist be gorged on all that is on display here? And can Paul possibly be satisfied by his most anticipated film of the year? Could this be one of the greatest sequels of all time? | Top 5 True Spooky Encounters | 02 Jun 2023 | 01:19:14
Countdown #426
With the new format allowing big pivots away from film and TV, the boys leapt at the chance this week to do a very different episode. So instead of bantering about what is good and what isn't on the box, in the theatre, or from your stereo speakers, the boys this week are (largely) eschewing the jokes about sexual organs and are instead recounting their Top 5 True Spooky Encounters. In this spine-tingling episode, you'll hear about everything from possession by an animal to a bona fide exorcism, by way of a seance gone wrong and nights spent in haunted houses. All of which happened to one of the lads or to a direct contact of theirs. And stick around to the end, when a few listeners weigh in with their scary tales, one of which was enough to cause a cold shiver of dread down Paul's spine when he made the mistake of reading it late at night, while alone in the dark ... Will YOU be brave enough to listen to these true spooky encounters, or will The Countdown continue without you ...?

| Renfield review | 30 May 2023 | 00:19:41 | |
Universal takes another bash at a classic monster that it owns, but this time livens things up by casting Nicolas Cage as Dracula, and making him play second fiddle to another Nicholas, this one of the Hoult variety, in the newly released Renfield. But after 6 weeks out in North America, the boys know this one hasn't set the world on fire, and are determined to learn for themselves whether this one has been unfairly overlooked or actually earns its rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. | The Top 8 Films of the Last 8 Years | 26 May 2023 | 00:54:47
Countdown #425
All good things must come to an end, and so it is with eating all the a$$es.
The month long celebration of eight years of The Countdown podcast - affectionately known as the 8 All the A$$e$ month - draws to a close with Paul and Wayne running through the Top 8 Films of the Last 8 Years.
There is some agreement, much swearing, occasional shock, and more than a smattering of incredulity. There's also plenty of The Soundboard. But most of all, there's laughter as all of the a$$es are eaten for one last time ...
... until the show resumes with a range of different Countdowns, of course ...

| Fast X review | 23 May 2023 | 00:27:52 | |
FAMILY. Vin Diesel is FAMILY. And he is also the equal of J. R. R. Tolkien (at least in his own mind). But we can't bad-mouth FAMILY, so just roll with it. Like the cars do in this - and all the previous entries in this franchise - they roll, literally, and keep on driving. Because that's what you do when FAMILY is on the line. How do we know this? Well, because Vin Diesel says it is so. And like Kanye West, he's FAMILY. So what FAMILY says, goes. Who can argue against that? Not Wayne and Paul. Because they would never argue with FAMILY. Find out whether this latest installment is worth your FAMILY'S time, as The Countdown continues ... Countdown #424
In some circle, the show must go on. But when it comes to The Countdown Podcast, the a$$e$ must be eaten! So despite Paul coming down with COVID and Wayne completely losing his voice (but not having COVID - go figure), the boys have bravely taken the mic to record the third part of the 8 All the A$$e$ celebration of 8 years of the show, this time counting the very worst films they've seen since the podcast began in March 2015. There are hot takes and squeaky voices aplenty, but at the end of the day it was all worth it to name and shame these filthy films and celebrate the show making such a milestone! Countdown #481
This week the boys give some love to Sony Pictures and their virtual armada of different production companies as they countdown the best ever films Sony has produced.
Will Spider-Man films take up most every spot? Or are there a number of 80s classics for you to chew on? And has Wayne done proper research to ensure all the films on his list are actually co-produced (not just distributed) by Sony?

| Polite Society review | 16 May 2023 | 00:20:03 | |
With COVID striking the podcast this week, and the NON-infected co-host losing his voice, the lads were very pleased to have this recent recording up their sleeves for this newly released British-Pakistani production. Part comedy, part martial arts film and seemingly very Edgar Wright inspired, Wayne was the first one to jump at this, and he convinced Paul to get on board. After all, both co-hosts are members of society, right? And at least one of them can be polite when the occasion demands it ... Phase 5 of the MCU resumes with the final installment in a previously beloved series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. | The Worst 8 TV Shows of the Last 8 Years | 05 May 2023 | 01:13:19
Countdown #422 The first part of the show's four-part series celebrating 8 years of The Countdown is here! Having been given the sub-title of 8 All the A$$es$ month (with thanks to Sam Hurley from the Movie Reviews in 20 Q's Podcast), the series begins with the boys taking aim at the worst 8 television shows of the last 8 years. Now you might think that after 8 years, these two fools would have worked out how to specify a brief, but you would be wrong! As Paul has decided to interpret the brief one way and Wayne - much to his outrage and consternation - in another. In other words, it's Bizarro World throughout this Ep, but it at least maintains the usual crass, over the top humour and hot, hot takes that you've come to expect from the show. | The Mandalorian Season 3 review | 02 May 2023 | 00:33:11
The one successful Star Wars series has finished it's third season on the Disney+ streaming service, so of course, it's time for Wayne and Paul to assess what Jon Favreau and the House of the Mouse have brought us ...
Wayne is the unapologetic Star Wars fan, so he has many thoughts on this thirs season following Din Djarin and Grogu, primary among them: Just how much interest from the ladies will admitting his fandom lose him? Paul, meanwhile, is trying to get his head around some of the complete filler episodes that have been trotted out here, but will they affect his overall view of the season?
Learn the answers to all these questions, as well as consider how inconvenient living with a helmet permanently on would be, as The Countdown continues ...

Countdown #421
You know how this is the nicest, most easy-going podcast where two friends get along all the time and there's nary a bad word said between them? If you answered "yes", you're lying to humour this description, so thank you for the effort, but there's really no need. Paul and Wayne know their show is built on hurling insults at each other, so it should come as no surprise that when Top Level Patron to the show, David Powell, said do the Top 10 Movie Insults, the lads needed little convincing. What follows is much like Wayne's genitalia - short in length, but big on laughs - as the boys perform their favourite movie insults for (or is that at?) each other. Paul may even call upon the Soundboard in an even more integrally important way than its regular critical role, much to Wayne's annoyance. So tune in to find out how badly Wayne loses it, as The Countdown continues ...

The Evil Dead franchise is back and Paul couldn't be more excited! Countdown #420
It's Episode 420 and as Patron Extraordinaire Chris Yeany worked out, this Episode drops American time on 420 ... So what option was there other than to do the Top 10 Stone Movies for this week's show? None. "Don't condescend me, man." "That's just like, your opinion, man." "Ladies, ladies, ladies! Jay and Silent Bob are in the hizzouse!" "I am not amused." "It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn, with like, a bomb." | The Super Movie Bros. Movie review | 18 Apr 2023 | 00:24:22
500 million dollars later, Wayne and Paul decide they better see what all the fuss is about and head to the cinemas to catch the latest triumphant video game adaptation, The Super Movie Bros. Movie. Amazingly, the song "When Will I Be Famous" is not used once in this 90 minute animated adventure, but a bunch of other crappy needle drops are, and Wayne, at least, is all about them. But does he like, well, ANYthing else about this film? And how many times has Paul defended a non-horror against Wayne's version of Negatron? | Twisters review | 16 Jul 2024 | 00:26:37
Remember that natural disaster film from the mid-90s that had a flying cow? Well, Universal Pictures, Warner Brothers and Amblin Entertainment are hoping you recall only enough to want to see another film about a bevy of twisters laying waste to Oklahoma while people chase the things across many, many flat rolling plains, because this film literally has nothing else to do with the original.
But does watching forces of nature wreak havoc while a bunch of people chase them around for various reasons a good film make? That's what Wayne and Paul are here to tell you, since for some odd reason, this very American film complete with more country music than even a diehard fan would care to hear has released internationally first.
Find out if this one is worth your time as The Countdown continues ...

Two reviews again this week, but Wayne was too busy to see both, so Paul kicks things off by reviewing the well-received Air, which once again combines the talents of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon to tell the story of how Nike lured Michael Jordan to join them fresh out of college. Then, Wayne joins Paul to review The Pope's Exorcist, a horror film starring Russell Crowe which Wayne suggested to see, somehow having no idea it was a horror. Paul has a load of fun with this, but who's enjoying themselves by the end of the film? The answer may shock and disturb you ... Which, if any of these films, is worth your time and hard-earned to see at the theatre? Find out as The Countdown continues ... | Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves review | 04 Apr 2023 | 00:31:05
Hollywood circles around to the fantasy adventure film, this time dressing it up up as a D&D film set in the Forgotten Realms fantasy world. Paul knows all about this as he used to play D&D back in the day. Wayne claims he played it only twice - even if it was a lot more than that - and remembers little to nothing about such adventures. So who is going to enjoy this film and who is going to be middling to okay with it? And just how high is Chris Pine's charisma score? Learn the answers to these questions as well as just what the hell a Displacer Beast is, as The Countdown continues ...
