Rin Harte AKA Harte - Non-binary and unapologetically queer, HARTE channels their personal experience into songs that will resonate deeply with those navigating their own struggles.16 Mar 202600:26:43

She wants you and you’re sure of it, right? In their debut single STAY, Harte navigates the balance between love and limerence.

Artist Bio:

HARTE (pronounced Heart) is an indie rock artist whose sound is as emotionally charged as their name suggests. Non-binary and unapologetically queer, Harte brings you back to 2008 with their emo -influenced guitar tones and gritty vocals. Harte then transcends the genre with their poignant lyrics and modern take on heartache in the digital age.

Inspired by the haunting anthems of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era to the honesty of Paramore, HARTE’s music explores the complexities of identity, emotionally charged lyrics and a sound that blends alternative rock with indie-pop. HARTE channels their personal experience into songs that will resonate deeply with everyone, especially those navigating their own struggles.

With an upcoming single, STAY, HARTE is ready to capture the hearts of listeners who crave authenticity and a voice that reflects their own journey. HARTE’s music is for anyone who’s ever loved too deeply, been let down and lived to tell the story.

Debut Single STAY:

Having a crush can be all fun and games but when you’re viewing the world through a distorted lens, love in all its forms may not be all it appears to be.

Harte brings us into the world of schizoaffective disorder and through their songwriting recounts their personal tales of love, loss, infidelity and obsession all while attempting to stay sane in a world that wasn’t made for people like them.

With their debut single STAY, Harte crosses into the uncomfortable, vulnerable and obsessive nature that surrounds infidelity and limerence up close and in your face.

You can run but you can’t hide from the raw and real emotion Harte brings to their performance. As STAY thunders through your speakers, Harte begs the object of their desire to give into their innermost longing and stay with them despite a plethora of reasons to go. STAY reminds us that real love is only temporary and every moment is worth fighting for.

In 2023, she faced her own life-altering diagnosis: an aggressive form of leukaemia. Now in recovery, Sonia speaks candidly about survival, perspective and living with urgency and gratitude. Her story is not one of tragedy, but of courage, humour and hard-won clarity. MUMBELIEVABLE the podcast emerged a few years later after Jeremy Vine invited Sonia on to his Radio 2 show for an alternative Mother’s Day item. What started as a 6-minute piece ended up lasting over half an hour with Sonia taking calls from listeners who recognised a similar story with the troubled and complicated relationships with their own mothers and the feedback was how she coped so well with a difficult childhood. Jay Messerli of The Souls20 Mar 202600:21:32

Today we are joined by Jay Messerli, lead singer of the Swiss Indie band The Souls, who are currently supporting Scouting For Girls in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland

The Souls are an alternative rock band from Switzerland whose explosive live energy and polished song writing have taken them from European club stages to international tours across the USA and Asia.

With over 450 shows worldwide, the band have built a reputation as a formidable live act and a powerful modern rock band with global ambition. Formed in 2010, the five-piece quickly gained international attention, leading to support tours with Lenny Kravitz, The 1975 and Kodaline — placing them early on the radar as a band with serious crossover potential.

Their debut album Eyes Closed, produced in Los Angeles by Greg Collins (U2, No Doubt), launched them onto the international stage, followed by extensive touring across Europe, the UK, the USA and Asia. Festival appearances at Reeperbahn Festival (Hamburg) and Music Matters (Singapore) further cemented their international credentials, alongside recording sessions at London’s legendary Eastcote Studios.

Their fourth studio album The Whippet Inn, recorded in London with Andy Wright (Simply Red, Eurythmics) and Gavin Goldberg, will be released on 20 February 2026. The album marks a bold new chapter for the band — blending arena-ready hooks, raw alternative edge and cinematic production — and firmly positions The Souls as a breakout international rock act for 2026. With their biggest release to date and an aggressive international touring strategy, The Souls arrive in the UK ready to make serious noise.

The album The Whippet Inn was created in London in spring 2023. Inspired by time spent in the pub of the same name and recorded live as a band at Eastcote Studios, the sessions marked a conscious turning point for The Souls. After two self-produced albums, the band felt the need to open up again and allow space for external mu sical influence. Working closely with producers Andy Wright (Simple Minds, Simply Red) and Gavin Gold berg (Neil Young, KT Tunstall) well before the recordings began, it quickly became clear that this producer duo could fully realise the band’s creative vision. The Souls deliberately abandoned perfectionism, recording the songs live in one room to preserve raw energy and genuine emotion. Lyrically, the album moves between social commentary, desire, secrets and fractured relationships. It follows no rigid concept, but rather what felt honest in the moment — a direct and hopeful record about chaos, intimacy and distance, and the urge to lay everything bare. The first single “Bangladesh” unfolds like a fever dream driven by longing — an escape to a place where reality and fantasy blur and desire takes on a shape of its own. It serves as a musical distillation of the album: raw, im mediate and real. At the heart of “Nightingale” lies the question of whether it is better to embrace change or remain within the comfort zone of familiar routines — a dilemma we repeatedly face throughout life. For the band, Nightingale rep resents the act of savouring every moment, even when we know it is fleeting and cannot last forever.

Ben Westwood19 Mar 202600:21:58

Today Nick & Sue are joined by Sussex singer-songwriter Ben Westwood is back with his first new music in several years. His new single, soulful ballad Step Into The Light, is produced by Mark Edwards, and taken from Ben’s upcoming album We Are Human.

Filmed on the seafront of Ben Westwood’s hometown Eastbourne, Step Into The Light’s video reflects the song’s message of hope and optimism, featuring Ukrainian refugee and now Eastbourne resident, Pilates instructor Olga Litvinova.

Ben Westwood's entirely self-penned 11-track album showcases a unique style, blending soul and folk roots with blues and alternative rock - as if Leonard Cohen and Marvin Gaye had recorded an album together, according to Ben. His distinctive voice draws on classic influences - from the Beatles and 1960's folk to Motown soul.

The album combines love songs Step Into The Light and Save The Best For You with upbeat soul on When You’re Gone, and more reflective material such as the title track, We Are Human, which examines fears over the growth of AI, and gospel-style protest song, We Will Have Our Freedom.

Ben previously had success before the pandemic with his album Sing Like Your Life Depends On It, which dealt with his struggles through grief as a widowed single father, including songs such as Falling and Time Heal Me. A remastered version of Time Heal Me is included on the new album.

Ben has been writing songs since the age of 14 and studied music in London with respected artists Tom Baxter and Ben Cullum, brother of Jamie. He has played at venues including the Brighton Dome and Ronnie Scott's, and received airplay on BBC radio. Outside music, Ben is a college lecturer, published author and former journalist, appearing regularly on TV and radio.

“Straight from the heart #nofilter, this is music that is honest and unafraid.” Camilla Lake, East Sussex Newspapers

  • He was once arrested for robbery in London on a case of mistaken identity. He was released without charge (that’s his story anyway).
  • He once sang in a gospel choir at Prince Charles’s Highgrove house. A picture of him meeting the Prince hangs in his parents’ toilet.
  • He went to the same school as comedian Eddie Izzard but has never worn high heels. There’s a first time for everything though.
  • He once got paid by mistake for an article written by the other Ben Westwood, erotic photographer and son of fashion designer Vivienne. He has yet to pay him back.
  • He appeared on BBC talk show Kilroy to discuss drunken Brits in Greece, after reporting for the Daily Telegraph. He rarely drinks these days.
  • He shook Tony Blair’s hand before he was Prime Minister. No matter how he tries, it just won’t wash off.
  • He is an award-winning novelist and travel writer.

Honest, relatable, and cleverly written, it captures that all-too-familiar moment when love turns into heartbreak, proving not every Valentine’s song comes with a happy ending. “Her Name Is My Song” was premiered by Center Stage Magazine.

“Her Name in My Song” is not your typical love song,” shares Wyze. “It’s actually a break-up song. For a lot of folks, Valentine's Day brings up memories of a painful breakup. If that’s you…then give it a listen. I’m willing to bet you’ll feel a lot better when you hear what the guy in this song did to get back at his “ex.” I had fun writing it. And you might even get a chuckle at someone else’s expense.”

Jill Saward of Shakatak (2024)05 Apr 202600:21:28

In this edition of the Chatterbox redux Podcast, Sue & Nick are joined by Jill Saward of Shakatak.

Here she talks about the groups amazing history and the fact that they are not on the retro circuit as they have never split up. As of 2023 Shakatak have four original members.

Jill shares many fantastic anecdotes, including the fact that Shakatak members including herself sang and played on those old Top of The Pops albums from the late 1970's and very early 1980's. Those of us over a certain age will remember those albums on the old Hallmark label, famous for not having the original artists but had songs on them were or had recently been in the UK singles chart

Wikipdedia says Shakatak are an English jazz-funk band founded in 1980 by Bill Sharpe, Nigel Wright, Roger Odell and Keith Winter. An initial white label release, "Steppin", caught the attention of record labels. The band's name was created by them and derived from the name of a record store in Soho, London called "Record Shack".

Shakatak have enjoyed 14 UK hit singles. The group is still active and popular throughout the world, particularly in Japan and the Far East, and generally produce a new album every two years on JVC Records.

It was the release of the 1981 single "Easier Said Than Done" that gave the band the radio exposure needed for their first top-twenty hit. This record introduced their instrumental-unison vocal sound to a wider audience, and the track stayed in the UK Singles Chart for seventeen weeks. The follow-up, "Night Birds" (1982), was their first single to reach the top ten and it also peaked in Australia at number 92. The album of the same name gave Shakatak their first gold album, entering at number four and remaining in the charts for twenty-eight weeks. Jill Saward (formerly of Fusion Orchestra, Brandy and Citizen Gang) became their sole lead singer to make Shakatak's fifth album, Down on the Street (1984).

In the 1990s, the band achieved success in the US when their 1992 album Open Your Eyes went to No 1 in the contemporary jazz charts.

Still active, the band has released a number of albums in the 2000's. Guitarist Alan Wormald died in 2023, and was replaced by returning original guitarist Keith Winters.

Ben Waters30 Mar 202600:28:58

Today Ben Waters joins Nick in the Chatterbox studio and discusses what is almost a Rolling Stones album in terms of the people playing on it with him... there is Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman et al on it - It is an incredible story - His press release is below and the podcast is right here.

BEN WATERS - BOOGIE 4 STU

A TRIBUTE TO IAN STEWART - 15 YEARS ON

Fifteen years ago, I released Boogie 4 Stu as a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Ian Stewart - one of my biggest inspirations and a true pioneer of rock 'n' roll piano. So much has happened since then, but one thing remains unchanged: Stu's influence continues to shape everything I do.

Looking back, I had no grand plan when I first started this project. I just wanted to honour the man who had given me so much, both through his music and his spirit. What started as a simple idea in a small studio in Weymouth quickly took on a life of its own. Charlie Watts, ever the gentleman, offered to play on it, and suddenly, I found myself needing a bigger space. Dave Green joined on bass, Rocket 88 legends Willie Garnet and Don Weller jumped in, and before I knew it, we were recording in Jools Holland's studio - free of charge, thanks to Jools' generosity.

Then came the incredible twist: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Bill Wyman all added their magic to the album. Then came my cousin PJHarvey! It was an overwhelming experience, a gathering of some of the greatest musicians on the planet, all playing for Stu.

I was introduced to Sir Peter Blake through a mutual friend, Pete Smith. Pete knew that Sir Peter Blake had seen one of the Stones' earliest shows and that he loved Stu's playing, so it was meant to be that Peter did the portrait of Stu. Thank you, Peter!

Sadly, several people have passed since the initial recording. This album is also dedicated to them, particularly Willie Garnet, who was a larger-than-life character and a brilliant sax player. He was an inspiration to young musicians, and both my son Tom and I were guided by him so much - we miss him terribly.

I am so proud that everyone on this album has been a real friend and shown kindness beyond belief. They had my back in the two years of preparation, helping me out and encouraging me every single step of the way. I can't thank them enough. I am very lucky to have such kind, thoughtful friends!

It's been 40 years since Ian's passing. To mark this special anniversary, I've added some brand-new recordings to the album - tracks that carry the same raw energy and love for the blues that Ian Stewart embodied.

The first is Come Back Baby; an old John Lee Hooker tune we recorded with an all-star lineup: Keith Richards, Dave Kelly, Ian Jennings, Paul Beavis, and me. This track is dedicated to the irreplaceable Charlie Watts, whose absence is felt every single day. Charlie's groove was the heartbeat of every band lucky enough to play with him, and we miss him dearly. This song is for him.

Fifteen years on, Boogie 4 Stu still stands as one of the proudest moments of my career. It was about celebrating a man whose influence reached far beyond The Rolling Stones. Ian Stewart shaped rock 'n' roll piano as we know it, and I hope this record keeps his legacy alive for many years to come. So here we are,15 years later, still playing, still remembering, and still feeling the spirit of Stu in every note we play.

THANKS STU!

Ben Waters

Ella Clayton01 May 202600:28:43

Today Sue and Nick are joined in the Chatterbox studio by Ella Clayton.

ELLA CLAYTON is a singer/songwriter from London whose breathtaking voice and storytelling ability casts powerful spells over each audience she encounters. She released her first LP, ‘Murmurations’, at the end of 2022.

With her second studio album ‘Could It Be You?’ due to be released 24th April, East London singer-songwriter Ella Clayton spotlights lead single ‘As You Are’ a love song of a different kind. Recorded at George Ezra’s studio Hotel Quebec, the closing track ‘As You Are’ is a sunny lead single, containing a big crescendo with an extended finale. It is a rare love song about friendship, sparked by a mundane moment of spotting a close friend haggling for jeans at a market stall, unaware she was being watched. A warm nod to how platonic love is worth celebrating just as loudly as the romantic one.

Blending soulful folk storytelling with emotional honesty, Ella continues to enchant audiences with her mesmeric vocals and relatable lyrics. The new record (out 24th April) transforms uncertainty into revelation with 11 songs mapping out modern love, loneliness and the quiet process of getting to know yourself, offering listeners both solace and self-recognition.

Along with producer Lester Duval (Pip Millet, Alfa Mist) Ella wanted this record to feel like a warm hug and to sound like musicians playing together in the same room. With George Ezra kindly offering up his Hotel Quebec studio for three days, they were able to track the rhythm section for all songs live. The result is a piece of work that captures the raw immediacy of Ella’s beloved live-stage sound, while making space for lush and cinematic moments throughout. Genre-bending, her unique voice is the thread that weaves throughout.

Chaz Jankel of the Blockheads27 Apr 202600:30:33

Our guest on this edition of the Chatterbox Redux Podcast is Chaz Jankel, original member of The Blockheads

Originally released in 1988, Chaz Jankel’s score for the movie D.O.A. has been unavailable for 25 years. Now, after countless requests, it is here, reimagined, and remastered.

Chaz Jankel is an English musician and songwriter. In a career spanning more than 40 years, he came to prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist and keyboardist of Ian Dury and the Blockheads. With Dury, Jankel co-wrote some of the band’s best-known songs including Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, Reasons to Be Cheerful Part 3 and Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick which featured at No.18 on the Greatest Ever British No.1’s in The Guardian.

He also wrote Ai No Corrida that became a big hit for the late Quincy Jones, and Glad To Know You, from his second solo album Chasanova, was a massive dance hit in the USA, staying at No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for some 6 weeks.

Chaz has also written a number of film scores including An Unusual Job for a Woman, War Party, Killing Dad, K2, Rachel Papers and D.O.A. that his sister Annabel co-directed. His score for the Dury biopic Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll was nominated for a BAFTA.

D.O.A. was released in 1988 and the score was briefly available on Varese Sarabande on CD, but for the last 25 years one couldn’t find it anywhere. It was Chaz’s wife Elaine, who loved the original score, that suggested reimagining, remastering, and rereleasing the score. D.O.A. Reimagined is now available through Kudos Records and can be found online.

There are seven pieces on the album. Dead on Arrival Suite (Radio Edit) is the original orchestral score presented as a suite and Dead on Arrival (Piano Sonata) is a brand-new interpretation of the theme.

Other previous projects include a jazz quartet instrumental album called Out of the Blue (2001), a solo album with featured singers called The Submarine Has Surfaced (2011), and another solo album Flow (2023). There is a new instrumental album called Notes of Bergamot due to be released this spring which is a collaboration with acclaimed cellist Frank Schaeffer. In addition to this he has another jazz collaboration with saxophonist/flautist Finn Peters due for release later this year.

Meanwhile, Chaz continues to play throughout the country to enthusiastic Blockhead fans and has new material with the band ready to be released.
