Podcast 118 - Type 2 Diabetes : Understanding and Minimise Your Risk on World Diabetes Day17 Nov 202300:21:27

In light of World Diabetes Day, it's crucial we address this escalating global issue, especially its impact in the UK. According to Diabetes UK, an estimated 5 million people in the UK are living with diabetes, many undiagnosed. A large proportion of these cases are type 2 diabetes, primarily influenced by diet and lifestyle.

As a nutritionist, I encounter many clients on the borderline of developing full-blown type 2 diabetes. It's startling to realise that one in 14 people in the UK are dealing with this condition. Unlike type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, type 2 is largely preventable and manageable through lifestyle changes.

Eating Pomegranates for Optimal Gut Health | Principles of Good Health Series

Pomegranates for Optimal Gut Health

November is National Pomegranate Month, so it’s a perfect time to reflect on why this fruit is so valuable to support gut health. When we think about health, we must consider the health of the gut. We cannot create a healthy environment if the gut health is impaired in any way.

These bright red, juicy pomegranate seeds are full of flavour and work just as well in savoury and sweet dishes. Yes, they can be tricky to prize away from their shell, but the effort is well worth it!

Podcast 114 - Are You Menopausal - You Need To Watch Out For These Chemicals18 Oct 202300:16:56

Podcast 114 - Are You Menopausal - You Need To Watch Out For These Chemicals

Why Endocrine Disruptor Chemicals may contribute to menopausal symptoms – and how to minimise your exposure

As women transition through the menopause and oestrogen production starts to decline, there are a group of chemicals known as Endocrine Disrupters that can start to exert a more powerful and potentially damaging effect in the body.

We know that oestrogen naturally starts to decline during the peri-menopause. Oestrogen is a hormone and locks onto oestrogen receptors on the cell membranes throughout the body and brain. Just like a lock and key. This is one reason women why start to experience such a wide variety of symptoms. But during the menopause when oestrogen levels decline, these receptors may accept other chemicals that look and fit just like oestrogen but have the potential to alter metabolism in a number of ways.

Podcast 113 - Gut health is critical to a successful menopause05 Oct 202300:13:18

Podcast 113 - Gut health is critical to a successful menopause

Gut health and menopause: Why is gut health critical to a successful menopause?

October is menopause awareness Month, so it is a great time to shine a spotlight on positive action you can take to navigate your way through the menopause with ease.

It does not have to be a life sentence yet too many women struggle at this time with little support or awareness of the factors that can make this life transition more comfortable.

As a gut health expert, I want to highlight the role of the gut and specifically the gut microbiome towards a smoother menopause transition.

Podcast 112 - Is drinking coffee the secret to a healthy gut?28 Sep 202300:11:18

Podcast 112 - Is drinking coffee the secret to a healthy gut

Is coffee good for gut health?

Today I was asked to speak about coffee and gut health on Kaye Adam’s BBC Radio Scotland show. This follows the media interest in the announcement that coffee is good for your gut. So did I agree?

The scientists behind the Zoe app and study have discovered that those drinking coffee tend to have a healthier gut microbiome compared to those who do not. The suggestion is to drink three cups of coffee a day to deliver these benefits.

Podcast 110 - Is FODMAP good for your gut health?14 Sep 202300:14:20

FODMAP: is it really good for your gut health?

FODMAP is a dietary approach to support gut health and a popular and well known choice. And for those suffering with common digestive symptoms like bloating, pain, cramping and diarrhoea, it can provide fantastic relief. It seems obvious that if it provides symptom relief then it must be good for your long-term gut health, but this is not true, as I’ll explain below.

Podcast 127 - Cholesterol and Brain Health Confusion: What Should We Really Focus On?09 Aug 202400:08:44

In early August 2024, I was alerted to two conflicting articles around cholesterol’s impact on cognitive health. It continues to demonstrate how confusing media headlines are and for most people, how cholesterol impacts our health. The two conflicting views that emerged: one emphasising cholesterol’s vital role in our bodies and protecting against cognitive decline; the other linking high LDL cholesterol to dementia risks.

Podcast 109 - More Herbs Less Salt for a Healthy Gut30 Aug 202300:13:36

Podcast 109 - More Herbs Less Salt for a Healthy Gut

More Herbs Less Salt is an American Awareness day on 29th August.

It is well recognised that we should be careful with our salt consumption. When we talk about salt, we are referring to sodium chloride, common table salt. The recommended salt consumption over and above the salt we find in food is just 1 teaspoon.

Salt (sodium) is recognised to be a contributor of high blood pressure as the body will hold on to additional fluid to dilute the sodium in your blood, this increases the pressure. Processed foods can increase the sodium consumption in your diet, and there is no need to add salt to your food most of the time.

Now - new research has shown that a diet high in salt can damage one of the important families of beneficial bacteria - Lactobacillus species. We know that a high sugar and high processed diet damages the delicate ecosystem of beneficial bacteria, and now we can add salt to this list too.

Podcast 108 - CoQ10 the missing link to healthy ageing and longevity23 Aug 202300:13:11

Podcast 108 - CoQ10 the missing link to healthy ageing and longevity

CoQ10 and healthy ageing

If you’re over 50, vegetarian and/or taking statins, then you may be surprised to discover you may be lacking a crucial nutrient linked to healthy ageing and longevity.

CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) is a substance made naturally in the body, but as you grow older, levels start to decline. Statins also block the pathway for the production of CoQ10.

Crucially, CoQ10 is required for two key activities in the body. First it helps in the energy production cycle and second it is a potent antioxidant, protecting cells and organs from oxidative stress. Together these two actions have an essential role in determining the speed with which the body ages and the key to good health.

Podcast 107 - Nutrition in the News Can gluten lead to brain inflammation16 Aug 202300:10:06

Nutrition in the News: Can gluten lead to brain inflammation?

Study finds gluten leads to brain inflammation in mice

A small scale study (reported in the Journal of Neuroscience in July), showed a direct correlation between the intake of gluten and brain inflammation in mice.

Whilst this was a small scale study with less than 100 mice, these findings are of particular interest to researchers as mice have very similar nervous, digestive and circulatory system to humans. Of course, further studies need to be conducted to see if gluten has a similar impact with human brains, but we should not ignore these findings.

Podcast 103 - Why many people may be lacking this essential overlooked brain nutrient14 Jul 202300:14:45

Podcast 103 - Why many people may be lacking this essential overlooked brain nutrient

Choline is an important nutrient for brain health. It’s called an essential nutrient as the body cannot make sufficient amounts for its daily needs so must be obtained from the diet, but many people may lack sufficient intake via the diet.

The British Medical Journal published a report in 2019 asking “Could we be overlooking a potential choline crisis in the UK?”

Podcast 102 -How to use naturopathy to help protect yourself from Alzheimer’s06 Jul 202300:18:13

Podcast 102 -How to use naturopathy to help protect yourself from Alzheimer’s

In recent years an American physician called Dr Dale Breseden has come to the forefront of those seeking a natural holistic approach to support cognition, brain health and to help protect against neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. He has published several books showing how his own protocols have reversed Alzheimer’s.

Whilst I do not have his expertise and would not make a claim that someone with such a disease could reverse it, I recognise that our diet and lifestyle can have a dramatic impact on our risk factors for many chronic conditions and brain health should be no different.
