| Staying Positive while healing | 30 Mar 2023 | 01:14:35 | |
Today I chatted with Lorey, Natalie, Nichole and Tina about how they deal with the mental issues that come up while healing from an accident. I learned you can't stay positive all the time, it's OK to break down and have hard days. We are human and doing our best. Better days will come, and life will get better. Take time for you and relax during the healing process... | Derek Wolfe | 01 Dec 2022 | 00:36:35
Derek Wolfe is author of the Moab and North wash canyoneering guidebooks. He has also written some climbing guides. http://www.xanadumountainpress.com More about Derek. Derek Wolfe spends as much time as possible enjoying the adventure lifestyle available in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Sierra of California, volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest, the high desert wilderness of Utah, and Mojave Desert of Nevada. An enthusiastic (some might argue obsessive) mountaineer and rock climber, he has climbed all 637 mountains higher than 13,000’ in Colorado, climbed all of the Colorado 14ers in the winter and summited over 2,000 peaks across the US. Furthermore, he also thoroughly enjoys remote, adventurous desert tower rock climbs – over 100 towers summited – along with descending technical slot canyons. Additionally, he participates in cave exploration and mapping in the region’s caves as well as those in Tennessee, New Mexico, and South Dakota. Channeling one of his muses, Edward Abbey, he has produced this guide to educate and enlighten those fellow adventure seekers who venture into the magnificent realm of high peaks and deserts. His goal is to encourage those who use this guidebook to learn and practice proper minimalist impact techniques so that these magnificent lands can be enjoyed by future generations. | Rebolting Zion with Tyler Miller | 16 Nov 2022 | 00:41:21
Many canyons in the Zion area are equipped with bolted anchors. For years plated steel bolts, of varying quality, were the norm. As these bolts age and rust away they are becoming time bombs. Tyler's goal is to replace these aging bolts with modern stainless steel glue-in bolts and update anchors to modern standards. Stainless glue-ins are by far the best choice in soft sandstone and should last for generations to come. We chat about what this entails and how you can help. I got this message on Instagram so I thought I should have Brian on the show. "I think a cool episode would be titled "what NOT to do" and delve into a lot of the basics and mistakes that I've seen people make over my years, including when I started out when I lived in flag and needed helicopter rescuing from sycamore Canyon. I've seen a lot of basic things and behaviors that get repeated a lot that I think would be cool to highlight and what good alternatives to avoid those things are."

Today I chat with Andrew Humphries. He and some other guys started V7 academy to help provide additional education about canyons. They use the European methods for class C canyoning and teach you canyon and rescue techniques to help you move through the canyons more safely. This course with some in person instruction work best but these courses on their own will also give you more knowledge about the sport. We can never learn too much when it comes to these types of things.

| Tina's fall part 2~ Interview with the Instagram guy. | 22 Mar 2022 | 00:44:21 | |
THIS IS PART TWO OF TINA'S FALL. THE INTERVIEW WITH THE INSTAGRAM GUY. If you have not yet listened to that episode, please do so. Tina lives an adventurous life, and loves adrenaline filled sports like snowboarding and mountain biking. She met a guy on Instagram that also loves those same sports. He invited her and a friend to go to Moab Ut to do some Canyoneering. She jumped on the opportunity as canyoneering was something that she had wanted to try. Thew met up in Moab the night before and talked about the canyon the next day. After waiting for the rain to stop they descended Rock of Ages canyon. On the last rappel Tina decided to go first. They guy set the anchor using one 10 ft back from the one he normally had used. While Tina was rappelling on a double stand setup, she came to the end of one rope. Not knowing that was not ok, she continued to rappel, pulling the rope down as she fell 20-25 feet. She broke both ankles and her pelvis. She suggests if anyone wants to get into this sport that they get training before they go out with a stranger. Make sure you know who is leading you and that they have the skills to get everyone through safely. | Longer than anticipated in Maze Canyon with Jude and Kelleigh. | 17 Jan 2022 | 01:39:51
Jude Thomas and Kelleigh Miller were looking forward to a long day when they chose to the Maze (also known as Ice Cube) canyon in Red Rocks conservation area near Las Vegas NV. Their day turned out way longer than they had anticipated when they encountered some navigational issues on the approach. They decided to drop into the canyon anyway because they were hopeful, they if they needed to, they could climb out at the sneak route. That was not possible, and they had to continue down canyon finishing the coldest, darkest section after the sun went down. We talk about what went wrong and what they did right, as well as what they might do different next time. to read Jude's write up of the story. | Epic trip though Heaps Canyon with Raquel Diaz and Matt Weyen | 08 Jan 2022 | 00:53:01
On a trip through Heaps canyon in Zion National Park, Oct 2021 Raquel Diaz, Matt Weyen and their friend Michelle Niles were excited to see this amazing canyon. Day one of the trip was beautiful and they were enjoying their trip. The next day Raquel broke her ankle while downclimbing in one spot. They continued down canyon slowly with Raquel doing as much as she could with assistance from her team. They made it to the last rappel us as it was getting dark. Matt deployed the rope out of the dry bag he has stored it for the beginning of the canyon. He got on rope to rappel and just before he went into the free hang part, he noticed a huge knot in the rope. He was able to get back to the top of the rappel where he and Raquel worked in the knot for almost an hour when Michelle came to join them and continued to help for anther 30-45 minutes. They finally got the knot undone and were able to finish the canyon that night. | Elevate your canyon snacks with Chef Corso | 08 Dec 2021 | 00:57:30
Chef Corso is head chef and founder of MONTyBOCA. A company and community focused on elevating our outdoor meals.
He noticed that most camp food was a little lacking…either freeze-dried, heavily salted or out of a bag; and you can only eat granola bars, jerky and trail mix for so long. He knew there could be something better…He’s also a classically trained chef trained in Italy and California but he’s chosen to take his knife to a mountain ridge rather than a fancy fine dining restaurant. He believes that people should be able to eat well, even on the side of a mountain! MONTyBOCA is based in the Pacific Northwest but all recipes are trail-tested all over the country.

| Helicopter Evacuation in Dothracki Canyon with Dan Cotam | 21 Oct 2021 | 00:58:56 | |
Dan and his family were Canyoneering in Englestead canyon near Zion NP when his son saw Stephen Baker fall on the first rappel. It was a 300 foot rap that he lost control on and fell the last 80 or so feet. As a former Trauma surgeon Dan tried to help but was limited due to the remote location. Shortly after that incident, Dan him self needed a helicopter rescue after he fell in Dotracki canyon near Hilldale UT. He tell what he learned from both of those accidents. Dan grew up in Texas and went to BYU in Utah and fell in love with the mountains. He is now a 50 something weight loss surgeon who works in Salt Lake City. He has 5 kids, and has been married for 30 years. He ran for governor in 2019 as a libertarian and got 3.5 % of the vote (55,000) which he was thrilled with. He enjoy skiing(all types), rafting and mountain biking when not canyoneering anything which gets me out of the inside. His favorite color is orange. | Cascading in GA with Hill Belfi. | 13 Jul 2021 | 00:57:08
I chat with Georgia Tech Outdoor Rec Cascading expert Hill Belfi. I had wondered why GA tech ordered so much canyoneering gear from Imlay. Hill reached out when she found out about the podcast to let me know about what they call Cascading. It sounds so fun I my have to talk my husband into going there. Hill Belfi is a 22 year old resident of Atlanta, Georgia and a senior at the Georgia Institute of Technology studying biomedical engineering. The name Hill is her mother’s maiden name… the mountain sports are just coincidence! She grew up in Atlanta and spent her weekends as a kid solving scavenger hunts, playing soccer, reading every adventure story she could get her hands on, and in the Blue Ridge mountains kayaking, rock hopping, and hiking. Once at Georgia Tech, she signed on as student staff in the great sport of Cascading for Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech (ORGT, pronounced O-R-G-T or or-git), a department of Georgia Tech’s rec center that offers outdoor adventure trips in 9 different sports. She leads cascading trips for Georgia Tech all over the southeast, everything from teaching beginners to scouting new locations. Before COVID-19, she was interning with Johnson and Johnson’s medical device division working to manufacture needles and sutures. When she’s not rappelling waterfalls, you can find her working in a machine shop on campus, scouting out new taco places in Atlanta, playing guitar, or watching the Bachelorette with her roommates. Hill is an biomedical engineering student, a wilderness first responder, an avid houseplant parent, the president of one of the biggest college outdoor programs in the country, an enthusiastic member of the natural-anchors club, and a proud cascader – a canyoneer in a place without canyons.
