| Danny Flood - Co-founder Open World Magazine | 03 Dec 2015 | 00:43:08 | |
On show 52 of the BRAND New You show, it is my pleasure to welcome Danny Flood co-founder of Open World, the world’s #1 resource for active lifestyle creators. Danny is an author, a podcaster, and location-independent entrepreneur originally from San Diego, California. He is the founder of Open World magazine and the Open World podcast, where he interviews the world’s most exciting adventurers and location-independent entrepreneurs. Danny has traveled to over 30 countries on four continents and during his travels He has crossed half of Southeast Asia on a motorcycle. He’s rafted down the Amazon and climbed the tallest mountains of South America. He’s rappelled off waterfalls in the jungle and sailed across the South China Sea. He’s even tangoed in Buenos Aires and fought Thai boxing matches in Bangkok. Danny believes that we should live life on our own terms without the outside pressure from others. To this end, his book, “Buy your own Island” is a playbook designed to help individuals find the love, adventure, passion and purpose they seek. Help me welcome Danny Flood to the brand new you show. BUY YOUR OWN ISLAND - THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BREAKING FREE AND MAKING YOUR DREAMS A REALITY Buy your own Island is not a book on how to buy an island. Rather, it’s a highly actionable and motivational book which I consider to be a great mix of two of my favorite books, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The 4-hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. This book provides the reader with an MBA in location independent lifestyle. During our discussion, Danny Flood dispels the notion that location-independence is just for “certain types” of individuals. It really can be something we all enjoy if we have the right mindset. Because he has “been there done that” Danny understands more than anyone the games your mind will play with you to keep you in your comfort zone. Danny spends a good deal of time in the first section of the book walking the reader through exercises to help the reader overcome their own fears and self-doubt. ALIBI-ITIS We all suffer from an affliction known as alibi-itis, our secret excuses that keep us from getting what we want from life. These excuses act to postpone action and defer the things we really want out into the future. To overcome alibi-itis help Danny Flood recommends taking small steps out of your comfort zone by “leaning in” to the edge of your comfort zone. HACK UPWORK - HOW TO MAKE REAL MONEY AS A FREELANCERIn Hack UpWork Danny Flood takes all of his experiences using UpWork, an online staffing website for freelancers and clients developed to connect companies with talent, and boils them down into an actionable strategy you can follow to make the most of the system for freelance work. Companies post project based jobs and registered freelancers in areas such as web development, writers, sales, marketing and accountants review the job postings and bid on the o
| Gratitude and the Abundance Mindset | 26 Nov 2015 | 00:11:14 | |
Welcome to the 51st episode of The BRAND New You show THE podcast dedicated to helping you OWN your BRAND. Each week we meet here to learn how you can use today’s technology to own your career, grow your influence and build your personal brand. In honor of Thanksgiving here in the United States, today's show is about Gratitude, specifically the differences between a scarcity mindset and an abundance mindset. THE SCARCITY MINDSET A lot of people I talk to about owning their brand always seem to have an excuse, or I guess it’s a reason in their mind, why they think they can’t do something or why they don’t believe personal branding is a real thing. Most of the time, these folks exhibit what I would say is a deeply engrained Scarcity mindset. Unfortunately for them and for us, they tend to see life as having only so much, and there's not enough to go around. Using the analogy from my discussion with Jared Easley, it might help you think of the scarcity mindset as a pie. The scarcity mindset tells us there is only one pie in existence. Therefore, if someone were to take a big piece of the pie, it would mean there is less available for everybody else. In this way, people exhibiting a scarcity mindset often have a difficult time sharing recognition and credit and being genuinely happy for the success of other people. When they see someone taking what they feel is their piece of pie, they become very self-centered and will do anything they can to keep you from getting a piece of pie. Sadly this is the mindset that exists in many corporate cultures and I'm guessing this reminds you of someone you know? The truth is, I think under certain circumstances we all can develop a scarcity mindset. For example, do you ever take things too seriously? Have you ever thought that if you tried something new and failed, the sky might fall so to speak? Have you ever been concerned about what others might think about you if you do that thing you've always wanted to do, whatever the thing might be? Do you compare yourself to others? Do you want to write a book but as soon as you put the pen to paper you think, why should I write this book - there’s already a book on that topic. These are all symptoms of your scarcity mindset at work and this mindset is holding you back. When you think this way, you invite failure in into your life because your negativity becomes an obstacle on your path to success. The scarcity mindset keeps you where you are in your life and in your work. But, if you’re going to create a BRAND New You, you need to OWN your BRAND by moving away from the scarcity mindset and embracing the abundance mindset. THE ABUNDANCE MINDSET To see life through the lens of abundance takes a conscious effort on your part especially in the beginning. The abundance mindset comes from a sense of personal worth and security. It comes from owning your brand. When you reach this point, you are no longer concerned about what others might think, you’re not concerned about the sky falling or that someone else already wrote a book on the same topic. Getting to this point requires a paradigm shift on your part. You have to see that the pie is no longer limited. There is enough pie to go around. This is an important point so repeat after me: There is plenty for everyone. Say the sentence often enough, it’ll become second nature and you’ll be well on your way to an abundance mindset. The abundance mindset will enable you to own your career, grow your authority and build your brand. FIVE STEPS TO GAINING AN ABUNDANCE MINDSET 1 - Focus on abundance, not lack. 2 - Appreciation what you have. 3 - Choose to see opportunity. 4 - Carefully select the company you kee
| How to make a Podcast - Show #50 | 19 Nov 2015 | 00:41:06 | |
The step-by-step process I use to make this podcast. Hello and welcome to The BRAND New You show this is THE podcast dedicated to helping you thrive in the reputation economy. We meet here every week to learn how you can Build your personal brand, grow your influence and ultimately Impact your career. Today I’m super excited. Why is that you ask? Well, today is episode #50. I can hardly believe it myself. Especially considering 14 months ago all I had was an idea. There are a lot of people to thank for helping me get to this point, but I’ll start with the Stars of this podcast, my guests. All of my guests have been so gracious and it's humbling to me they were so willing to share their time with us. After all time is our most precious asset. I also have you the listeners to thank for clicking the subscribe button and tuning in each week. It’s your 5-star rating and reviews on iTunes, your tweets and emails that keep me motivated and inspired to keep going. It’s because of you we’ve hit show #50. Now a lot of podcasts when they hit show 50 or other milestones, like to do a top 10 list of things they've learned along the way. And to be honest, I was planning to do the exact same thing. But, I went back and reviewed the list of topics from my email subscribers. Items one and two we covered with the show on Master Minds and last week’s show on Twitter. Believe it or not, number three on the list was “How do you make a podcast”. So I thought it about and decided instead of doing a top 10 list of lessons learned, I'm going to use this podcast to teach you everything you need to know about starting your own podcast.

| How to use Twitter the right way | 12 Nov 2015 | 00:39:55 | |
Show notes: http://www.ryanrhoten.com/how-to-twitter/ Welcome to the BRAND New You show. On today's show, I talk about what I believe is the most important tool you can use to build your brand, grow your influence, expand your network, connect with hiring managers, and ultimately impact your career. You may remember from show forty-six about masterminds. I had asked my e-mail subscribers to submit suggestions for topics to cover or people to interview for the show. Twitter was number two on the list. If you've listened to the show for any length of time you know it's no secret that I love Twitter. Which means I was going to do a show on Twitter sooner or later, but to be perfectly honest I was really leaning towards later. Why? Well, simply because Twitter is well-covered ground on this podcast. Then I received an e-mail from a BNY listener named Dan. Dan's e-mail said, "Enjoying the podcast. What do you think is the best way to learn to really use Twitter?" As I was responding to Dan, I thought about it. While we have discussed Twitter on this show several times through the eyes of many different guests, we haven't actually looked at Twitter through the eyes of all of them collectively. So for this show, I've put together a mix tape if you will that combines the advice from several of my previous guests into this one cohesive show about how to really learn to use Twitter. Enjoy. I want to send out a special word of thanks to my previous guests featured in today's show. I personally learned so much from each and every one of you during our conversations about twitter that I knew as soon as I had the idea about putting this podcast together I had to call on each of you again for today's show. I encourage all of you reading this to listen to the shows with Madalyn, Mark, Katrina, John, Hannah, David, and Maria. If you thought the snippets from our earlier conversations were great wait until you hear everything they had to say during each of my discussions with them individually. Today we welcome to the BRAND New You show Marc Miller founder of career pivot.com. Career Pivot was selected as one of the top 100 career websites and has been featured on Forbes.com, CBS money watch, and US News and World report. Marc is a career design specialist who helps baby boomers design a strategy of manageable pivots in order to help them move towards a career they can grow with and be fulfilled with for decades. No stranger to career pivots himself, Marc has personally made 6 of them including stints at IBM, two successful start-ups in Austin TX, teaching math in an inner-city high school and even working for a local non-profit. He is the author of Repurpose your career - A practical guide for Baby boomers. In the book, Marc provides a roadmap for boomers who are looking to find a career they can grow into and that meets their needs. In His latest book which is called Personal Branding for baby boomers - Marc answers personal branding questions such as What is it, how to manage it and why it’s no longer an option. CAREER PIVOT AND PERSONAL BRANDING FOR BABY BOOMERS Marc looks at personal branding as being able to tell your story in an authentic way. Not so long ago your personal brand was limited to your reputation within the “four walls" of the corporate office. Today however with the internet and social media we compete with people from all over the world for the same positions. In these cases getting the next position or promotion comes down to your ability to help people answer this question: “How do I know that you know your stuff?” Some people see personal branding or telling your own story as self-promotion. These folks were not raised to be self-promoters. Marc and I talk about a very simple philosophy he uses with his clients to get past this mental barrier. | Master Minds - All your questions answered | 22 Oct 2015 | 00:28:56
Master Minds Show Notes: http://ryanrhoten.com/mastermindagenda Today on the BRAND New You show I went solo to talk about a topic I get asked about quite often - Master Minds Recently I sent out an email to my newsletter list and asked for feedback and suggestions for topics to cover on the podcast. I received several suggestions and will cover all of the topics submitted in upcoming shows but the topic of master minds won the Pareto chart battle. So let’s get into this. WHAT IS A MASTER MINDIf you were to ask ten different people to define a master mind you’ll probably get ten different answers. I always refer back to the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Written in 1937 as a personal development and self-improvement book, Think and Grow Rich is much more than a book on the secrets of how to gain wealth. It’s a philosophy that can be used to help people succeed in all lines of work. The book consists of 13 principles for personal achievement one of which is the Power of the Master Mind. According to Mr. Hill a Master Mind occurs: “When a group of individual brains are coordinated and function in Harmony, the increased energy created through that alliance, becomes available to every individual brain in the group.” Or said another way its like a brainstorming session on steroids. Everyone in the group is focused on a single purpose. One idea fuels engagement from other team members and before you know you are all functioning in perfect harmony working to solve or resolve the challenge at hand. When this happens Claudia Alutcher might say the idea machine in the room is running at full capacity. This is the power of the master mind. Surrounding yourself with a group of like-minded individuals for advice, counsel, and cooperation around a single purpose. My single definite purpose to educate and elevate the personal brands and online reputations of career-minded professionals so they get recognized for their expertise by becoming an authority in their niche. Or as I like to say become the google of their niche. Other topics covered include: HOW TO START YOUR MASTER MIND ESTABLISHING GUIDELINES FOR YOUR MASTER MIND HOW TO CONDUCT YOUR MASTER MIND MEETINGS (including a downloadable agenda) SUMMARYAnd that’s it. Every thing I know about starting, running and participating in a master mind. I’ve been fortunate to be in two master mind groups as I started down my current path. They have helped shaped my thinking, my single define purpose and frankly me as a person both personally and professionally. If you pick the right members they will become a part of your family just like for me Steve Stewart, Dustin Hartzler, Joseph Michael, Brand Heavey and Michael Faron have become for me. Good luck getting started. If you other questions please leave a comment below. I’ll answer every question and by keeping your comments on the blog others will be able to see the questions and the answers all in one place. That’s all the time we have left for today. I’ve been Ryan. And I’m out.
| John Sparks - 365 Ideas for Twitter | 15 Oct 2015 | 00:36:16 | |
John Sparks | Twitter | Social Media Today I welcome to the show John Sparks from IamJohnSparks.com. John is Top 100 Social Media Power Influencer and one of the Top 50 Most Valuable Social Media Influencer for 2015. He is Social Media Keynote Speaker, Entrepreneur, Coach & Trainer. John teaches Online Journalism at The University of North Texas where he is Adjunct Professor. John is the author of the Best-selling book - “365 Ideas To Go From Good To Great On TWITTER!” GETTING STARTED WITH TWITTERWhen getting started with John coaches his clients to pay attention to the following “Big 5” of Twitter branding. 1 - Name: Just like it sounds the name is your name or your company’s name. If you use your name make sure to use both your first and last name. 2 - Twitter Handle - This is your @ handle. When someone mentions you and uses your handle on Twitter it shows up in your notifications. And yes, WingDings are acceptable to use in your handle. 3 - Bio: You can use 160 characters in your bio. John recommends as a starting point using your headline on LinkedIn. Other suggestions are making sure to include keywords, think about how would you describe yourself, and finally consider how do you want to be found by others. 4 - Bio Picture John suggests the picture you use really depends on your purpose for using Twitter but he does advocate aligning your image across all your social media platforms. He even advocates using the same picture on your business cards. Another tip is to rename your images using your first and last name before uploading them to Twitter. Do not use the default name your camera assigns to your pictures such as DCS789543. 5 - Header Image The header image is not your bio picture rather it’s the large image at the top of your page. You can use this image to communicate the types of tweets follower can expect to see or to advertise your book or other body of work. WHAT ARE THE KEY ELEMENTS OF A GOOD TWEETOnce you’ve gotten your account set up you’ll want to start tweeting. You only get 140 characters in a tweet. This includes any hashtags (#) as well as the twitter handle of the person you may include in your tweet. In order to accommodate for re-tweets and mentions of other people John recommends keeping your tweets to 120 characters or less. John challenges that less is more so we need to be bold and be brief with our tweets. We need to include a Call to action in our tweets. John suggests using “Please Retweet” as the call to action for the tweet. WRAP The best way to get in touch with John or pick up a copy of his book are listed below. Twitter: @iamjohnsparks
| Katrina Collier - Social recruiting and employer branding | 08 Oct 2015 | 00:48:56 | |
Katrina Collier | Social Recruiting | Employer Branding Show Notes: http://ryanrhoten.com/katrinacollier Today I welcome to the BRAND New You show Katrina Collier from WinningImpression.com With knowledge gained from over a decade of in-house and third-party recruitment, Katrina teaches companies to use social media to gain access to their candidates directly on many social channels, such as LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter. She has been recognized as a thought leader by social recruiting solution Work4 and is one of The 100 Most Influential People in HR & Recruiting on Twitter. Katrina was named one of The Top 15 Recruitment Experts to follow on Twitter by Bond US and she has been quoted in The HR Review, Society for Human Resource Management, The Staffing Stream, and Cambridge University’s Strategies for Success. Katrina completely understands what companies are looking for when trying to attract the best talent which means for the active job seeker or for even those of you who are passively looking, Katrina knows how to connect companies with candidates in this social recruiting age. WHAT IS SOCIAL RECRUITING? Social recruiting is a real thing. It’s not a fad or a buzzword. It’s quickly becoming the way top companies recruit talent. Katrina defines social recruiting as simply using social media channels to recruit. However, it doesn’t replace the more traditional methods of recruiting. If used correctly social recruiting will compliment a company’s recruiting process. However to implement it successfully within a company, employers must develop a strategy to find, engage and connect with candidates directly on social media. HOW JOB SEEKERS CAN ENGAGE IN SOCIAL RECRUITING Most recruiters will start their search for you on LinkedIn which has become the default starting place for recruiters. However it's important to point out recruiters will use Google to search for you as well. The more savvy social recruiters will even look to the larger social sites such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram , Bechance, GitHub, StackOverflow, etc. So what does this mean? You must have a good online reputation. Always remember this: “Think through what you post. Ask yourself if you would you share it with your grandmother.” If the answer to this question is no, then don’t post it. The one time you post something objectionable that's the time a recruiter will be looking for you. Good social recruiters will search social sites that align with requirements of the position. As a candidate your job is to know which social sites you should be on, create a profile and starting sharing content. To lear
| David J.P. Fisher - Networking in the 21st century | 01 Oct 2015 | 00:46:23 | |
David J.P. Fisher | Networking Show Notes: http://ryanrhoten.com/davidfisher Today I welcome to the BRAND New You show David J.P. Fisher president of Rock Star Consulting. David, AKA - MC D Fish to his band mates , is a speaker, entrepreneur, coach, salesman, writer, marketer, yoga enthusiast and salsa dancer. He also happens to be the author of the book Networking in the 21st century: why your network sucks and what you can do about it. The book serves as a guide for modern professionals and walks the reader through the challenges and opportunities that exist in business networking. David believes networking is THE difference between those who get by and those who are getting ahead! NETWORKING IN THE 21ST CENTURY What is networking really? I’m finding most people I ask tend to cringe when I ask for their definition. For some reason networking has a negative connotation for many people. Because of this David likes to let every one define networking in a way that works for them. He mentions however that most of us use a definition for networking that actually holds us back and keeps us from taking action. So think about that for a minute. What’s your definition of networking? Does your definition keep you from taking action or does it align closer to Don Orlando’s definition? David’s definition of networking is: “Building a web of relationships with other people so that you can find mutual support and find business solutions.” Most of think about networking in a formal perhaps creepy kind of way. David challenges this mindset/definition by offering that each of us network every day. In fact, any time we interact with others we are networking. Take a minute and wrap your mind around this concept. Here’s a question to get you in the right frame of mind. How did you find your significant other? Was it through an introduction by someone else? Think about the most recent song you downloaded. Did you hear about it from someone else? Did you then tell others about it? That my friends is networking. David and I discuss the common reasons people don’t like to network. Have you ever had any of these thoughts. “I don’t have the personality for networking." "I’m not built for networking.” “I don’t have time for networking." If you’ve ever said any of these yourself, David offers some great advice on how to get past this mindset and start developing your networking skills. STEPS TO DEVELOP A NETWORKING PLANDavid and I spend a fair amount of time talking about how to develop a networking plan. When developing your plan, David cautions to keep it simple and do-able. So simple in fact, you can write it out on a napkin if that suits you. Here are 3 steps to developing your networking plan. 1 - Define your professional goalsYou need to identify where you want to go professionally. This may sound obvious but David gives us some real life examples of people he’s worked with over the years including CEO’s who cannot answer this question. You need to know what you are working towards professionally or as the Cheshire Cat says: “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.”

Lynda Spiegel | Career Pivot | Rising Star Resumes Show Notes: RyanRhoten.com/lyndaspiegel Today I welcome to the BRAND New You show Lynda Spiegel founder of Rising Star Resumes. Lynda is a human resources and communications professional with over 14 years’ experience in sourcing, recruiting and hiring top talent in a variety of industries. At Rising Star Resumes Lynda helps her clients develop their professional brand in order to get noticed by headhunters and hiring managers. In her role as a career coach Lynda works with mid-career professionals who often are seeking to change careers from one field to another. Lynda offers some unique insights, thoughts and strategies around how to make a successful career pivot. So today we are going to have a straight forward discussion about the realities and un varnished truths of what it really takes to make career pivot. Please help me welcome Lynda to the BRAND New You show. WHAT IS A CAREER PIVOTLynda’s definition of a career pivot is when you want to turn around and do something somewhat radically different, say going from being a teacher to being an attorney. She came to this definition after going through a couple of career pivots in her own career. She started working in equity compensation which she did for several years until one day the company was sold and Lynda very quickly found herself without a job. After moving to a few different jobs Lynda once again found herself in the middle of a corporate takeover. Like many her position she tried multiple times to find a new job in the same field but with no luck. After months of searching her son, a hiring manager for his company, gave her the unvarnished “truth” that, “No one was hiring their mothers.” This was a wake up call for Lynda who decided to put her HR skills and knowledge to work for herself and started Rising Stars Resumes. HOW DO YOU KNOW IT’S TIME TO MAKE A CAREER PIVOTLynda regularly speaks with clients who want to make a career change or pivot. Their reasons vary but a lot of them fall into these buckets: “I’m no longer happy doing what I do.” “My work is no longer fulfilling.” “I’m not making the kind of money I want to make or thought I would be making.” “I’m stuck but I don’t know what I want to do.” Any of these found familiar? If so rest assured that you are not alone. Fortunately in today’s podcast Lynda hits us with some unvarnished truth about the career pivot process. So if you’re considering a career pivot, I’ve broken the show down into the 6 key steps you’ll need to follow in order to make a successful career pivot. As the Chief Strengths Sleuth, Lisa brings 20 years of experience in helping people find and leverage their strengths at work. Her love for the strengths movement started in 2001 when she read Marcus Buckingham’s book, First, Break All The Rules. Now as a certified Strengths performance Lisa focuses on the potential in people and how it can be unleashed by using their strengths. STRENGTHS FINDERS COACHINGAt Pinch yourself careers Lisa has integrated her Strengths Finder performance coaching certification into a process she uses with her coaching clients. This part of the process can usually take up to a couple of weeks of paying attention at work and identifying when you are using a strength. Branding is the process of defining shaping and influencing both visually and verbally the story, the emotion and the meaning you want your audience to experience. Where Sunny sees her clients struggle the most is internally with the foundational "things" required to build a brand such as; defining their meaning, purpose, vision, values in a way that makes it easier to articulate them to the world. Comparing this to personal branding, I see and wrestle with many of the same things. Most people I speak with about personal branding don’t even take these internal things into consideration when building their brand. Your attitude is always on display for everyone to see even in places that never occurred to you to look. When was the last time you checked the message you left on your voicemail? Richard tells you why you need to check it and maybe update it. To say there has been a shift in employment over the last few years would be a huge understatement. We used to think about job security now we need to consider employment security. Employment security is all about you becoming the CEO of You, Inc. You need to be vigilant about the changing career landscape and required skills in order to develop transferable skills and knowledge that other employers will want and need. Employment security keeps you relevant and will help you weather the economic storms that will happen throughout your career. We discuss job hopping and I ask Richard how long is too long to stay with one employer. You can either hand around in abad situation and wait for something to happen to you or you can be more proactive and look for an opportunity elsewhere. If you subscribe to employment security over job security you’ll know when it’s time to go. CAREER PLANNING STARTS WITHIN

Dorie Clark | Stand Out | Personal Branding Show Notes: HERE Today we welcome back to the show Dorie Clark author of the just released book Stand Out: How to find your breakthrough idea and build a following around it. For those of you who are traveling along the journey with me to create a BRAND new you, it really is required reading. In Stand Out, Dorie provides us with the roadmap we need to take our personal brands to the next level. To that place, where we can all become the Google of our niche as I discussed in episode 16 of this podcast; Building your personal brand online. Speaking of building your brand online, I’ve developed an online brand assessment that will help you understand whether or not you Stand Out online. The assessment is free and when you’re finished you’ll be given a score and a link that will explain your score and how well you stand out online. The best part? You can do all of this from your phone. Head on over to mypersonalbrand.rocks, sign up and take the assessment. When you finish send me tweet @RyanRhoten let me know your score and how well you stand out online. Stand Out: How to find your breakthrough idea and build a following around it. Standing out is no longer optional. And with the release of Dorie’s book any excuses you may have about “not knowing how to get started” have been erased.
Why are you choosing this direction for yourself, when you know you were made to be so much more. Speaking of choosing your direction I’m reminded of yet another quote from Dr. Seuss:
| Dorie Clark - Author Reinventing You | 16 Apr 2015 | 00:24:52 | |
Dorie Clark | Reinventing You | Personal Branding Show Notes: Http://ryanrhoten.com/dorieclark Today we welcome to the BRAND New You show Dorie Clark president and marketing strategy consultant at Clark Strategic Communications. She is an author and professional speaker, as well as a recognized “branding expert” by the Associated Press, Fortune, and Inc. magazine Dorie Clark is frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Entrepreneur, and the World Economic Forum blog. Her first book, Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future has been translated into Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French, Polish, and Thai. Dorie’s newest book, Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build a Following Around It, is available for pre-order. She was named one of the “100 Must Follow People on Twitter” by the Huffington Post for 2013 and 2014, and she was named on the #Nifty50 list of top women on Twitter. Inc. magazine has named her one of the “100 Great Leadership Speakers for Your Next Conference,” and she has been recognized in Forbes as one of “25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch in 2015.” REINVENTING YOU - DEFINE YOUR BRAND | IMAGINE YOU FUTURE In 2010, Dorie wrote a post for the Harvard Business Review titled, “How to reinvent your personal brand”. The post went “viral” and Dorie was able to use it as a springboard for her book Reinventing You. More than just the author, Dorie is a practictioner having developed the methodologies by reinventing herself several times throughout her career. She started her career with the goal to become a professor, but was turned down for the doctoral program at the schools she applied. Undetered, Dorie decided to become a journalist and accepted a position in political journalism. This turned out to be a good move for Dorie who moved on the become a press secretary on gubernatorial campaign and later a press secretary for a presidential campaign. Both campaigns resulted in losses. Dorie once again had to adapt, evolve and reinvent herself. During her journey, Dorie realized there was no guide or roadmap to teach people how to reinvent themselves. So she leaned on her own experiences and on interviews with dozens of experts she spoke to along the way and eventually Reinventing You was born. So how do you know it’s time to Reinvent yourself? Dorie offers a few suggestions.
During our discussion, Dorie and I cover various topics such as:
We close this episode with one of my favorite Dr. Seuss quotes: “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you! The best way for the listeners to get in touch with you.

| Build Your Personal Brand Online | 26 Mar 2015 | 00:20:40 | |
Personal Branding | Online Reputation Management | Online Brand Show Notes: HERE Today on the BRAND New You Show I walk you through how to build your brand online. This past weekend I had the opportunity to speak on the topic at WordCamp Dayton. For those not familiar with WordCamps, they are essentially one or two days conferences that celebrate WordPress as a website platform. The experience levels ranged from total beginner to WordPress developer. The organizers recognized this and divided the conference into separate tracks depending on experience and interests. If you get the opportunity to attend a WordCamp, I highly recommend you consider going and the odds of one being near you are actually pretty high. WordCamps are held in many locations throughout the country and the world. The cost to attend is usually a fraction of other conferences which makes it an inexpensive way to gain new skills and meet new people. As I mentioned, my topic was building your personal brand online which was included in the marketing track. Download the presentation in the show notes.

| Jared Easley - Be the Noticer | 19 Mar 2015 | 00:37:37 | |
Jared Easley | Social Media | Networking | Podcasting Good To Great
SHOW NOTES: http://ryanrhoten.com/jaredeasley
Today we welcome to the show Jared Easley from starvethedoubts.com A self-proclaimed “everyday guy” Jared also happens to be an podcaster, speaker, author, and a master networker. His podcast Starve the Doubts, has been featured on Entrepreneur.com and the Huffington Post as the #1 emerging entrepreneurial podcast. Jared is a co-founder of the Podcast Movement conference - A conference by podcasters for podcasters. This event was held for the first time last year and was such as overwhelming success that the second annual Podcast Movement conference will be held later this year (2015) in Ft Worth Texas. As an author Jared’s book: Podcasting good to great; How to build your audience through collaboration is an Amazon #1 best seller. But don’t let the title fool you. At it’s core, Podcasting good to great provides you with a proven roadmap that will help you become a great connector and influencer. PODCASTING GOOD TO GREAT Launched on the opening day of the Podcast Movement conference, Jared’s book, Podcasting Good to Great quickly rose to number one status on Amazon. Having practiced what he preaches in the book, Jared had already built an amazing audience through collaboration. This same audience propelled his book to the number one spot in three categories. Jared is the original Noticer and is big on being the noticer vs chasing influencers. Chasing influencers, Jared explains, is what many of us try to do in the hopes of propelling our brands, which rarely works out. Jared challenges that rather than spending your time chasing influencers, being the noticer is much better way and much more rewarding use of your time. Being the noticer starts with the realization that no one really cares about what you’re doing or working on, unless you take the time to care about others first. By noticing others first, we generate rapport which will eventually lead to reciprocity. Being the noticer is very much like planting the garden and then watching it grow. It takes time but will yield you benefits down the road. Frankly, if you’re looking for instant gratification, this formula will not work for you. The formula of being the noticer takes time and does not scale but it is a great long-term strategy. We even discuss how to apply the “being the noticer” formula to the job search and the importance of being in the 3%. Hint: As a podcast listener you might just be in the 3% already. PODCAST MOVEMENT CONFERENCE Jared is a co-founder of the Podcast Movement Conference. We discuss how the conference came about and the steps necessary to make the conference happen. Some of the featured speakers at this year’s conference include: Aisha Tyler - Girl on Guy Podcast Sarah Koenig - Serial Roman Mars - 99% Invisible Pat Flynn - Smart Passive Income John Lee Dumas - Entrepreneur on Fire Lou Mongello - WDW Radio Don’t let the name of the conference fool you into not attending. Whether you have a podcast or not this conference is top notch and I highly recommend it.
