Ep.89 Why Fostering is such a Great Career Option with ex-cop and CEO Andy Robins of Affinity Fostering

jeudi 25 juillet 2024Duration 52:46

In this episode I am talking to Andy Robins. Andy who is director of Affinity Fostering Services.

He’s a really nice guy and ex-cop. We talk about his policing career history and the why he left policing to go into the fostering services and working with a family member.

We talk all things fostering including what make a really good foster carer. Those key skills and behaviours and what makes it a really good fit for cops. There are already a number of cops working with Affinity and doing really well.

We also discuss the challenges, checks and timescales. Whether misconduct can stop you from being a foster carer. The earning potential and the support that Affinity offer. That they are rated outstanding by OFSTED and are a great company to work for.

This is a really interesting episode and I think you will get loads from it!

Ep.88 From Policing to Owning your own Family Law Legal Consultancy with Cheryl Thornley of Puzzle Piece Law

mardi 16 juillet 2024Duration 49:58

In this episode I've got the absolute pleasure of talking to Cheryl

Thornley. Cheryl is the director of Puzzle Piece Law, they are an independent legal consultancy that advises and support individuals on all family law matters that includes separation, divorce, child contact and access to education, including special educational needs.

Cheryl is a former military veteran and an ex-cop. She did 20 years in policing before leaving to set up her own business. But actually, her journey to get to that point was really interesting and she did some additional qualifications.

In the episode she talks about how she went about doing those qualifications and actually the really diverse roles that she went to after leaving police and before actually creating puzzle peace law. Puzzle Piece Law is a franchise and it's a brilliant opportunity.

We talk about why you don't need to have those qualifications or what the qualifications that you might think you need to actually advise in this subject matter area. We talk about why it's a really good fit for cops and other emergency services professionals. As well as we talk about the power of networking and so many other topics.

It's a brilliant interview, really inspirational, and I'm really grateful to Cheryl for her time. If you're interested in contacting Cheryl, you can do it through LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/puzzle-piece-law/ or you can do it through the Blue Light Leavers website http://bit.ly/BLLPuzzlePieceLaw

Ep.82 Your ill-health Retirement Doesn't Have to be Your Forever with Simon and Angela Barry

Episode 82

vendredi 26 janvier 2024Duration 01:07:40

Welcome to Episode 82 of the Blue Light Leavers podcast. In this episode I'm talking to Simon and Angela Barry. In our first call, Simon really was genuinely pretty broken. He was lacking self-confidence, self-esteem, and he'd clearly been through a really tough time. They'd applied for a load of jobs with no success getting through to interviews, so we ended up working one to one. Why did I interview both? Well, I really wanted to share how PTSD and ill-health, retirement and all the associated symptoms and stress of the situation, can really impact everyone around you. Angela was so supportive, and she was very much part of this process, and she actually joined us for every call that we had. We talk about how we found the right roles, the application process, the interview prep, being ghosted, and the impact of dealing with the knockbacks and what success felt like with the choice of two jobs. I promise this is a stunning and very honest account of what they went through, and I really hope you enjoy it. I'm so grateful to Simon and Angela for their time and their honesty.

If you like what you've heard ,then please leave a review and share it with friends and let people know that this podcast is out there.

Ep.79 Why So Many Police Officers Are Leaving - with Professor Sarah Charman and Dr Jemma Tyson

Episode 79

mardi 17 octobre 2023Duration 31:44

Ep.79 Why So Many Police Officers Are Leaving - with Professor Sarah Charman and Dr Jemma Tyson.

Professor Sarah Charman is a Professor of Criminology, and Dr Jemma Tyson, a senior lecturer in Criminology, both work at the University of Portsmouth.

You may be aware that they conducted a study entitled ‘Voluntary resignations from the police service: the impact of organisational and occupational stressors on organisational commitment’, that looks at the reasons and rationale behind the exponential increase in voluntary resignations of police officers.

What it's shown is that there's been a 72% increase within twelve months and a 200% increase within ten years, and it's having a massive impact.
We talk about the research that was conducted and how they went about doing it. We talk about their findings and the impact, and we look at what's being done from a national and organisational perspective and also by the Federation.

We also talk about the importance of intervention and what can be done to reverse this, and we also talk about next steps for them.
It's an incredibly insightful and interesting interview and I think you're really going to enjoy this.

Ep.77 From ill-health Retirement to Published Fiction Author Tracy Earle

mardi 19 septembre 2023Duration 46:58

From ill-health Retirement to Published Fiction Author with Tracy Earl.

Tracy is a former police officer who served for 26 years before having to retire through ill-health, due to a diagnosis of PTSD. She has since gone on to become a published author of a book called Darkness Rising in a series called Children of the Light and signed by a US publishing house for a trilogy.

In this episode we cover the whole process from that initial seed of an idea, all the way through to becoming a published author, with an amazing story for young adults that I think, without a doubt has got film written all over it as well.

I really hope you enjoy hearing Tracy’s incredible and amazingly inspirational story as much as I did, recording it.

To find out more about Tracy's book you watch this brilliant promo video using this link: https://bit.ly/DarknesRisingVideo

The book is available now through Amazon and Waterstone's!
