The Power of Cellular Health 28 Feb 202300:23:24

Send us a text

Autophagy is derived from the Greek words auto and phagy, which means self-eating. Scientists first discovered that human cells could eat themselves in the 1950s when they noticed under a microscope that the cell constituents were consuming certain other smaller parts of it.

Since then, the understanding of autophagy and its effect on human health and disease has developed. Its potential use for beneficial and therapeutic purposes may be more far-reaching than scientists once thought.

However, should you always be trying to encourage autophagy in your body? And how is diet and nutrition related to this process? In this article, I will uncover the pros and cons of enhancing autophagy, and when it is beneficial to stimulate this process for therapeutic purposes.

In today's episode, you will learn more about the power of cellular health for your overall health and what you can do to help to keep your cells thriving.

Highlights from today's episode include:

  • Mitochondria and importance of cellular healing.
  • What causes cells to become dysfunctional, including toxins, viruses and nutrient deficiencies?
  • How can diet and lifestyle help with cellular healing?
  • What foods are best for cellular health.
  • How you can prevent cellular toxicity.
  • What you can do to support detoxification.

Food Sensitivity Testing21 Feb 202300:27:35

Send us a text

Have you ever experienced unpleasant symptoms after eating certain foods, including sneezing, rashes, joint pain, bloating and diarrhoea? If so, then you might be wondering what is causing it.

A food sensitivity reaction is typically caused by an imbalance in the gut, which affects the immune system. Increased intestinal permeability, referred to as ‘leaky gut syndrome’, is often a culprit. Food sensitivities can present in several ways, from dizziness, anxiety, headaches, difficulty sleeping, ear infections, fatigue, acne, and irritable bowel, to name a few.

An elimination diet is an effective way to identify which foods are causing the sensitivities by removing a food type for at least a month and then reintroducing foods to see if symptoms arise again.

A food sensitivity test is a quick, easy and accurate way of identifying personal trigger foods, which can help optimise your food habits and guide an elimination diet to help relieve chronic symptoms.

Alternatively, the more advanced Cyrex array tests address a more extensive range of issues concerning food sensitivities. The Cyrex panels detect both IgG and IgA antibodies to evaluate the immune reactions to food in its raw and cooked form, common food combinations, and reactivity to gum molecules and binding isolates.

In today's episode, you will find out more about food sensitivities and how taking a food sensitivity test might be beneficial:

Highlights from today's episode include:

  • The difference between food intolerance, allergy and sensitivity.
  • IgG antibodies to food and how it affects your health.
  • Symptoms of food sensitivities including fatigue, migraines, acne, and digestive issues such as bloating and constipation.
  • How to improve food sensitivities with diet and lifestyle.
  • Why stool testing in combination with food sensitivity testing can provide deeper insight.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) & Autoimmune Disease31 Jan 202300:17:52

Send us a text

Did you know that there are now over 80 different types of autoimmune diseases that impact multiple organs, tissues, cells and compounds such as enzymes in the body? An autoimmune disease occurs when your body’s own immune system starts to attack itself, and as a result of this attack, it causes damage to the body leading to disease.

Classifying different autoimmune diseases is no mean feat and requires scrutiny of your symptoms, biochemistry and whether the condition is organ-specific and systemic. And that is why many conditions that we don’t class as autoimmune in nature could, in fact, have an element of autoimmunity.

One such condition is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which I repeatedly see in my clinical practice with my clients living with autoimmune diseases. This led me to investigate some similarities between these conditions and even to question, is PCOS an autoimmune disease?

In this episode we will explore the link between autoimmune disease and PCOS and how addressing the root cause may help with symptoms of both conditions.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • What is PCOS?
  • Autoantibodies and how they affect your body.
  • Insulin resistance and blood sugar dysregulation in PCOS and autoimmune disease.
  • Chronic inflammation in autoimmune disease and PCOS.
  • Do you think PCOS is an autoimmune disease?

Is SIBO An Autoimmune Disease?24 Jan 202300:21:22

Send us a text

Are you experiencing bloating, pain and unpredictable bowel habits? If so, it might result from a condition known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

IBO is a complex condition but many of the symptoms result from friendly gut bacteria - which are (in most instances) beneficial for your digestive system - not moving from the small intestine to lower down the digestive tract in the colon.

Our old friends the healthy bacteria give off gases as they ferment the food we eat and, as a result, you end up with that uncomfortable bloating after eating and having to move your belt buckle down a notch!

So, how is SIBO related to autoimmune disease, you may ask? The relationship between SIBO and autoimmune disease is what I will be explaining to you today. Not all SIBO is caused by autoimmune disease but if you are experiencing gut symptoms and are struggling to find the root cause, listen up, as this might be the answer you were looking for all along.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • What causes SIBO?
  • How dysbiosis of the gut microbiome can cause systemic inflammation.
  • How to improve digestive function by enhancing the migrating motor complex.
  • How an autoimmune response can cause SIBO.
  • What functional tests can help determine the root cause of SIBO.

FRIDAY 5 - Reducing Your Exposure to Harmful Chemicals 20 Jan 202300:17:02

Send us a text

Daily exposure to potentially harmful chemicals is virtually unavoidable. Most 85,000 chemicals registered for production under the Toxic Substances Control Act were grandfathered in with little or no health and safety testing.

Medical conditions linked to toxic chemicals include obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancers, and multisystem complaints such as fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity, as well as autoimmune disease.

Toxins are inevitable in your everyday life, putting your detoxification pathways under pressure. Your liver, kidneys, large intestine, lymphatic system, and sweat glands work together to reduce the buildup of these chemicals through detoxification.

Of these organ systems, the liver plays one of the largest roles. The liver performs hundreds of functions and is needed to process nutrients and hormones, as well as remove waste products created as the result of normal body functions.

However,  there are ways that you can reduce your toxic exposure to lessen the burden on your system.

In today's Friday 5, I would like to share with you five ways to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • Ways to reduce toxicity in the food you eat.
  • The best non-toxic cookware.
  • The effect of plastics on your hormones.
  • Ways to improve the air you breathe.
  • What chemicals to look out for in your personal care products?
  • How to purify your water and reduce plastic exposure.

FRIDAY 5 - Ways to Health Success06 Jan 202300:15:48

Send us a text

You may be starting the year with an intention to eat healthily, which is an excellent focus for the year ahead, but did you know the research suggests that roughly 80% of people who start a healthy diet regime and lose weight will not maintain that weight loss for over 12 months?

And the same applies to those who adopt a healthy eating plan to reduce inflammatory symptoms. It isn’t sustainable long term if not approached in the right way.

In my clinic, the most common reason I see my clients struggling to follow a healthy eating plan is an emotional one, as it is easier to avoid processing emotions you are uncomfortable with. Food is often used as an effective distraction.

So rather than diving feet first into a new healthy eating plan, why not set some solid emotional foundations to rebuild by taking the steps I will explain in this episode?

In today's Friday 5, I would like to share with you five ways to ensure health success in 2023.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • Why knowing your why is a vital first step in health transformation.
  • Establish your core values to ensure you live a life aligned with your path.
  • Create healthy habits which make a living a healthy life automatically.
  • Do more of what you love in life to feel better and have more self-worth.
  • Practice gratitude for living in an optimistic mindset for the majority of the time.

Friday 5 - Potential Causes of Raynaud's Disease16 Dec 202200:09:47

Send us a text

Have you ever experienced symptoms of Raynaud's disease?

Most commonly, Raynaud's affects your hands and feet, causing fingers and toes to turn white and numb due to blood vessels reacting to the cold or stress and reducing blood flow.

When the circulation returns, it is common to feel a tingling sensation or pain in the affected area.

So what causes it, and how can you manage the condition naturally?

As a functional nutritionist, I always look beyond the symptoms and try to determine what the root cause of a condition might be. As Raynaud's is a condition that affects the blood vessels, the root cause of Raynaud's disease could relate to many factors, but a few obvious ones to investigate are blood sugar dysregulation, heavy metal toxicity and maladaptive stress response.

Blood vessel spasms can also result from stress, grief and emotional trauma, which may require emotionally-focused therapies to improve symptoms.

In today's Friday 5, I would like to share with you five potential causes of Raynaud's phenomenon.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • How blood sugar dysregulation can contribute to Raynaud's.
  • Why Raynaud's might run in your family.
  • The link between food sensitivities and Raynaud's.
  • Why the health of your cells is a factor in Raynaud's disease.
  • How a maladaptive stress response can develop into Raynaud's.

Friday 5 - Ways to Feel Happier 09 Dec 202200:12:18

Send us a text

Do you know what makes you happy?

I used to think I did.

Happiness was the ‘high’ feeling after passing an exam, going on holiday, buying something special or meeting a celebrity. But was that real happiness or more excitement?

It took me years to understand the difference between the two, and as a result, it harmed my health.

You see, excitement is great in short bursts, but when you constantly seek excitement with no happiness at the end of it, you can live in a chronically hyper state in which your body feels as stress and, over time, you can start to feel empty inside.

Did you know that happy people don't just enjoy life; they're likely to live longer, too? A study has found that those in better moods were 35% less likely to die in the next 5 years when considering their life situations.

It has taken me years of unpicking and rebuilding to live a life that makes me happy. In today's Friday 5, I would like to share with you my top 5 ways to feel happy.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • Why living aligned to your values and purpose creates happiness.

Nourishing Your Mitochondria for Immune Health08 Dec 202200:20:26

Send us a text

You may have come across the word ‘mitochondria’ recently or perhaps you recall it from a school biology lesson and know that its associated with your cells and energy production in the body. It’s a new area of focus in human health and not without due cause.

A human cell is made up of many functions and organelles, which are enclosed within a strong cell wall. The mitochondria are an integral part of your cells which have many complex roles. Recent research is now suggesting that the mitochondria is the back bone of your immune system and without it functioning correctly, we either have an increased susceptibility of getting sick or we are more at risk of chronic illnesses such as autoimmune diseases.

Nourishing your mitochondria could improve your immune health, rather than targeting it directly with conventional treatments such as immune boosters like echinacea or anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • What the mitochondria are and why they are important.
  • How the mitochondria play a vital role in immune health.
  • Food to nourish the mitochondria.
  • Lifestyle techniques to increase mitochondria production.
  • Testing for mitochondria health.

FRIDAY 5 - Immune Building Food02 Dec 202200:09:38

Send us a text

The immune system protects you from harmful pathogens, such as viruses and bacteria, that you might be exposed to from the air you breathe, food, and people you touch.

All these immune cells require certain minerals, nutrients, and energy to do their jobs properly. Any deficiencies in these vital components may lead to a sluggish immune response to the enemy resulting in infection and disease.

Lifestyle and mental perspectives also contribute to an impaired immune system due to their effect on sleep and stress management. A sleep-deprived or chronically stressed body is at far more risk of being overcome by a pathogen than one without fatigue and in harmony.

In today's Friday 5, I am focusing on the top 5 immune-building foods.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • The power of phytonutrients and why it is vital to have colour in your diet.
  • The role of healthy fats in the immune response.
  • Why dietary fibre and a healthy gut microbiome optimise your immune defence.
  • How beta-glucans in mushrooms fight against pathogens like viruses and bacteria.
  • Any why chicken broth is the perfect antidote when you are sick as it stops viral replication.

There are many causes of itchy skin, including allergies and food sensitivities, hormone imbalance, and cosmetics. In this episode, I will explain some of the critical nutrient deficiencies linked to itchy skin, also known as pruritus.

FRIDAY 5 - Functional Testing in Autoimmune Disease18 Nov 202200:15:16

Send us a text

Have you ever wondered what might be at the root of your symptoms, but the test your doctors run keeps saying everything is ‘normal’, even though you struggle with daily inflammatory symptoms like brain fog, fatigue and skin irritations?

If so, I would like to chat with you about functional testing because I was also frustrated when I started my path to better health. However, unlike many of my clients, I did have some out-of-range numbers in my doctor’s testing, but they didn’t know why.

After many times of going back and forth to the doctors and endocrinologists, with no treatment options provided, I decided to take my health into my own hands. And that is when I discovered functional testing.

In this Friday 5 episode, I will share with you the functional tests that enabled me to take a personalised approach to my diet and lifestyle so that I was able to reverse my symptoms of autoimmune disease. I now commonly use these tests with my clients to help them improve their health.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • The valuable health information in a full blood count.
  • What a stool test can identify, and what impact that have in autoimmune disease and gut health?
  • Why organic acids tests are helpful if you have chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Hormone testing and its relevance in autoimmune disease.
  • Why the cortisol awakening response is vital in autoimmune disease.
  • How to test for autoantibodies and be proactive in your health, diet and lifestyle.

FRIDAY 5: Daily Mindfulness04 Nov 202200:12:33

Send us a text

It is vital to understand self-awareness as it can range from focusing on the present moment to your current physical, mental and emotional state.

Awareness of your emotions and physical state allows you to choose how to respond. For instance, instead of letting physical discomfort push you into a grumpy state, you can acknowledge the discomfort and consciously choose to overcome it.

Self-awareness can help you make better decisions, as it is easy to fall into a routine or pattern of behaviour when you feel tired or overwhelmed, such as staying up late and snacking at a certain point in the day.

Mindfulness is a way to raise your self-awareness through tools and practice that anchor you in the present moment. The more you practice, the better you will maintain that state.

Mindfulness practices have improved immune function and reduced inflammation, which may benefit those with autoimmune diseases.

In this Friday 5 episode, I will share my top 5 mindfulness practices that cultivate more self-awareness in your everyday life.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • How daily journalling helps to raise self-awareness and happiness.
  • Breathing techniques to bring you back to the present moment.
  • The power of yoga and the benefits of developing a daily practice.

Is Diet Alone Enough to Reverse Autoimmune Symptoms?17 Oct 202200:24:00

Send us a text

Have you made healthy changes to your diet but still not seen results? Have you tried the latest herbal remedies and wheatgrass shots, but your symptoms still niggle away at you? And do you generally feel like you are doing all you can to feel better, but it doesn’t seem enough?

I know I felt that way. I spent 25 years trying different health diets, and my autoimmune symptoms returned. I was vegan, then pescatarian, and then tried keto. I had a cupboard full of supplements that addressed the many symptoms I was experiencing, such as fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes and headaches, but nothing helped long term. I had begun to lose hope and accept that this was how life would be, and I would do my best with what I had.

But I wasn't taking a complete approach,  but when I did, I saw changes happen, which is why I created The Complete Autoimmune RESET.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • How to release emotions and toxins from your life and why it matters.
  • What nutrient deficiencies can contribute to autoimmune disease.
  • Why it is important to regulate your blood sugar with diet and lifestyle.
  • Why cellular energy is at the heart of reversing autoimmune symptoms and feeling better.
  • Why you can take a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your health to thrive in life.

Food Reactions in Autoimmune Disease04 Oct 202200:27:42

Send us a text

Food intolerances and sensitivities are one of the main challenges for those with autoimmune diseases and inflammatory conditions. You may find that you started with one food reaction, and now you have several without any known reason.

And they can spring up at any time. You may have always been able to tolerate gluten, and now you feel bloated after eating it. Or perhaps you have always eaten dairy, and now your sinuses flare up when you eat too much.

So why does this happen in autoimmune diseases?

One of the reasons is due to a loss of oral tolerance, which can lead to a cascade of inflammatory reactions and cause damage to self-tissues and organs. Oral tolerance is your body’s ability to not react to ingested foods, but this can be broken down in autoimmune disease

This episode covers what a loss of oral tolerance means, why it is critical in autoimmune disease, how a loss of oral tolerance occurs, and why it doesn’t just relate to your gut.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • Why do food reactions happen in autoimmune diseases?
  • What is the difference between food intolerance, sensitivity and allergy?
  • What causes food reactions?
  • Is there more to food sensitivity than leaky gut syndrome?
  • What you can do to reduce your food sensitivities.

Blood Sugar Balance & Autoimmune Disease 23 Sep 202200:21:41

Send us a text

If someone were to ask what the first thing they should do to feel better with autoimmune disease is, I would say that stabilising your blood sugar should be your number one priority.

And the reason for this is that many symptoms that you may think relate to your autoimmune disease specifically may be the result of blood sugar dysregulation.

In my own health, I suffered from symptoms of blood sugar imbalance for years, including fatigue, brain fog, increased appetite and anxiety, and once I was able to resolve it through diet and lifestyle interventions, I felt so much better, and I had a solid foundation to build on to improve my health.

In today's episodes, I will share with you how blood sugar imbalance can impact your health and how you can naturally reduce your blood sugar levels and keep it stabilised so you have more energy, feel brighter and live free of sugar cravings.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • What causes blood sugar dysregulation?
  • How does imbalanced blood sugar lead to autoimmune disease.
  • Simple ways to decrease your blood sugar spikes.
  • Introduction to my free challenge, The Sugar RESET.

One of the biggest challenges with autoimmune disease is managing autoimmune flares. You can feel fantastic one day and then floored the next.

I know when my autoimmune disease was in its active phase, and I was living flare to flare, I didn’t know how I would feel until I woke up in the morning. And this meant if I had booked an exercise class or I had an early meeting at work, I didn’t know whether I would be able to make it.

In today's episodes, I will share with you my approach to managing autoimmune flares.

Highlight's from today's episode include:

  • What causes autoimmune flares.
