Ep 536 – The Price of Deep Tissue: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney28 Oct 202500:14:24

This month mark's my 25th anniversary of being a massage therapist. In my 25 years, I have developed some opinions about definitions. In this episode of The Rebel MT, I am breaking down the cost of deep tissue therapy, calling out who is paying the price, and analyzing how we need to rethink things. Not just for our clients, but for the sake of a long and awesome career.

Rebel Massage Therapist:

My name is Allison. And I am not your typical massage therapist. After 20 years of experience and thousands of clients, I have learned that massage therapy is SO MUCH more than a relaxing experience at a spa. I see soft tissue as more than merely a physical element but a deeply complex, neurologically driven part of who you are. I use this knowledge to work WITH you—not ON you—to create change that works. This is the basis of my approach. As a massage therapist, I have worked in almost every capacity, including massage clinics, physical therapy clinics, chiropractor offices, spas, private practice, and teaching. I have learned incredible techniques and strategies from each of my experiences. In my 20 years as a massage therapist, I have never stopped growing. I currently have a private practice based out of Long Beach, California, where I also teach continuing education classes and occasionally work on my kids. If they're good.

Ep 436 - Pulmonary Fibrosis—An Aberrant Matrix: "I Have a Client Who . . ." Pathology Conversations with Ruth Werner14 May 202400:16:38

A person with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus develops new back pain in her mid-upper left side. It feels like "it's coming from under my ribs," she says.

First, it's diagnosed as arthritis, but interventions don't seem to make a difference.

Finally, a year into this unremitting pain, a rheumatologist asks about her breathing and discovers she has developed a complication called pulmonary thrombosis, probably related to her autoimmune diseases. They start treatment and voilà, her back pain is gone.

This is a good example of a case in which massage therapy was definitely NOT the best choice.

Ep 420 – Gainful Employment (and the 100% rule) with Les Sweeney27 Feb 202400:26:03

The Gainful Employment rules that were released in October 2023 will likely impact clock-hour programs in states with minimum clock-hour requirements for licensure or certification, including massage therapy. Les Sweeney, president and CEO of ABMP, is joined by Lance Hostetter, director of government relations, to explain the 100% rule, the flaws within the rule, and potential advocacy steps schools may wish to pursue. They also speak briefly about the Interstate Massage Compact and how it improves portability and the profession as a whole.

Lance Hostetter is the ABMP director of government relations. To contact our ABMP government relations team, email gr@abmp.com.

Blood clots, legitimate concern about blood clots, and well-honed knowledge about blood clots are all part of our profession's requirements for safe practice, right? And over the years I've been doing I Have a Client Who . . ., I've received dozens of stories about blood clots in one context or another. Ep 524 – The Anatomy of the Iris & Lessons from Vegas: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney02 Sep 202500:12:50

On a recent trip to Las Vegas and on a quest to find a good cup of coffee, I found myself staring at my own eyeball. It sent me down a rabbit hole of eyeball anatomy that I didn't even know I wanted to know. Turns out, I knew more than I thought I did. And my bet is you do too.

Ep 406 - Low-Back Pain: Our Event Horizon: "The Rebel MT" with Allison Denney21 Dec 202300:14:47

The low back has, oh, so many parts and, oh, so many possibilities for both function and dysfunction. For this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison compares the low back to silly putty, a flower, a puppet master, and deep space. In any instance, getting to know this event horizon of our anatomy is the key to helping clients whose low back has morphed into a black hole.

But if we take a moment to understand outlets, their design, and their purpose, we might be able to approach the famous one we own with a little more finesse. In this episode of The Rebel MT, Allison dismantles our thoracic outlet and the syndrome and symptoms that show up here.

Jojoba: www.jojobacompany.com

HobaCare Jojoba is a premium quality, 100% pure jojoba oil that is highly beneficial for massage therapists. As a single-ingredient product, it aligns perfectly with holistic practices, providing an all-natural, chemical-free massage medium option. Jojoba oil closely resembles human sebum, which allows it to absorb easily and deeply into the skin, delivering a non-greasy, moisturizing experience that doesn't clog pores or cause allergic reactions. This unique property makes it an excellent medium for massage, enhancing tactile contact without leaving an oily residue. HobaCare Jojoba is also shelf stable and will not stain natural fiber sheets. By choosing HobaCare Jojoba, massage therapists can enhance their practice, offering clients a superior, skin-friendly experience that promotes both skin health and overall well-being.

Ep 396 – Massage for Elderly Clients with Diabetes with Dawn Castiglione07 Nov 202300:22:34

As your client pool ages, it's likely you will see more clients living with diabetes. Can the hands-on work you offer this aging group of clients make a difference in their quality of life?

In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Darren and Kristin are joined by Dawn Castiglione to discuss the importance of massage in addressing blood circulation problems in the elderly with age-related diabetes, specific considerations massage therapists should keep in mind when working with this population, and techniques that contribute to improving the client's overall well-being.

Dawn Castiglione has been a licensed massage therapist since 2010. She became geriatric massage certified in 2011 after training under Dr. Sharon Puszko, DayBreak's previous owner. Working mainly in retirement communities, assisted-living facilities, and memory care units, Dawn has enjoyed a career in massage therapy with a focus on seniors and those with degenerative conditions. After teaching for DayBreak for nearly a decade, she became owner, director, and principal educator of DayBreak in 2023. She enjoys guest speaking at support groups and major events for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and looks forward to helping massage therapists take their skills and passions to the next level, helping them to embrace the geriatric specialty in massage therapy.
