The first series of Target Talks, hosted by Target’s Chief Executive, Sarah Bryars, and Director, Sam Kandiyali, explores the value of purpose-led communications and how businesses can deliver purposeful PR.

With more and more organisations thinking about their purpose and how they enact it, in 2022 Target launched the Pillars of Purpose model to help organisations consider the value of communication on their journeys to becoming purpose-led.

In this series, ‘Target Talks: Purposeful PR’, Sam and Sarah chat with five guests who have a wide range of specialisms and perspectives, with each episode exploring a different aspect of the topic. The guests range from a Chief Creative Officer to Social Media Consultant, Managing Directors and a Corporate Affairs Specialist, whom all share their insights and advice around delivering purposeful PR, from building communities, to storytelling, engaging stakeholders and influencing change.

In this episode of Target Talks, Sarah Bryars sits down with Adrian Jones, Group Head of PR at the Benefact Group to discuss the role of PR in delivering their organisation’s purpose.

Adrian begins by introducing listeners to the unique set-up of the Benefact Group and how it has evolved since its beginnings 135 years ago, to insure some of today’s most historic buildings in the UK.

The pair chat about how Benefact is owned by a charity, and how everything they do is about giving back and helping charitable causes, making them the third largest charitable donor in the UK.

Adrian talks about the importance of authenticity in business and how this is crucial to build and maintain trust among stakeholders.

Adrian and Sarah discuss how Gen Z and Millennials are considering the environmental strategies and social value commitments of companies when applying for jobs, and how organisations can even lose employees if their ethics and actions are not aligned with individuals’ goals.

Sarah talks to Adrian about the wide range of charities that benefit from the work of the Benefact Group and the ‘ripple effect’ created through Benefact’s ‘Movement for Good’ programme. The pair discuss the range of PR tactics, including visual installations, that helps the company to communicate with its stakeholders internally and externally.

Target Talks: Taking Purposeful Action with Josephine Osborne

In this episode of Target Talks, Sam Kandiyali is joined by Josephine Osborne, Senior Project Manager at Specsavers.

Jo begins by talking about Specsavers’ work in improving lives through better sight and hearing – the organisation’s purpose. She introduces listeners to Specsavers Homelessness programme which focuses on making eye and hearing care accessible to all including those experiencing homelessness.

Jo explains the importance of being present in the communities that find it difficult to access care, and how this has been vital to understanding the needs of disadvantaged people, which is central to Specsavers’ Community Sustainability activity.

Sam and Jo discuss how Specsavers stores were encouraged to get onboard with the organisation’s purpose, using a focus group of people with lived experience of homelessness to help local store partners understand the problems faced in their communities.

Jo also talks about the impact that purposeful charity partnerships have had on Specsavers’ work and the difference they have made to local communities.

Delivering Purposeful Visual Communications

In this episode of Target Talks, Sarah Bryars and Sam Kandiyali are joined by Spencer McPherson, Chief Creative Officer of Still Moving, a creative agency who produce dynamic and engaging photography and film for brands around the world.

Spencer begins (and ends) this episode by sharing stories of some of the many famous faces he has photographed, including Hillary Clinton, Vivienne Westwood and David Attenborough. Spencer, Sarah and Sam discuss how photography can create an emotional connection with the viewer, drawing similarities with other forms of purposeful communication and storytelling, designed to resonate with audiences.

Whether for fashion or financial services, Spencer explains how gaining the trust of his clients, and keeping an open dialogue throughout a project, has a significant impact on achieving the best results and success.

Spencer tells us how Still Moving conveys authenticity throughout their work by focusing on what the story or narrative of the content is, keeping the purpose of the project at the forefront of what they do.
