Talking with T-Bird: Wanda Shirk
Watch the podcast on YouTube!
The Survivor RHAP podcast’s “Talking with T-Bird” series is back as Rob Cesternino and co-host Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper reconnect with Survivor: Palau’s Wanda Shirk—a player whose journey remains one of the most unique in Survivor history. In this special episode, Rob and T-Bird are joined by Josh Wigler to share Wanda’s perspective on being the only Survivor castaway to leave before getting a buff, torch, or Tribal Council moment.
Right from the start, Wanda opens up about the iconic schoolyard pick twist in Survivor: Palau, explaining how it felt to stand among 20 players, only to be left without a tribe due to the “men pick a woman, women pick a man” format. She details her preparation—even swimming and running to be the most ready over-50 contestant—and discusses the emotional aftermath for both herself and Jonathan, who shared her fate. The group also explores Wanda’s lasting Survivor legacy: her spontaneous songs, the creation of the fan-favorite “Wand-Off” tradition, and her ongoing love for the show despite its twists and ever-evolving format.
Rob, T-Bird, and Josh dig into Survivor’s changing game structure, from Palau’s massive starting group to the fairness of modern twists, and Wanda provides a rare look at castaway camaraderie before the game truly begins. A surprise audio message from Palau’s Kobe brings back personal memories, highlighting how deeply Wanda connected with her peers in just two short days on the beach.
Key moments in this episode:
– Behind the scenes of Survivor: Palau’s infamous schoolyard pick twist
– Wanda’s thoughts on preparing as an active, older woman for Survivor
– Reflections on how game twists affect fairness and opportunity for all contestants
– The origin and impact of Wanda’s musical legacy and the RHAP “Wand-Off”
– Personal stories of friendship, resilience, and lessons in choosing happiness after adversity
How might Survivor’s history have changed if Wanda, with her positive spirit and knack for uniting people, had made it onto a tribe? What can her journey teach fans and players alike about perspective and character in the game?
Listen in for Wanda’s unforgettable Survivor perspective and discover why players and fans still sing her praises twenty years later.

Talking with T-Bird: Sue Hawk
Watch this podcast on YouTube!
The time has come for the return of “Talking with T-Bird.” Each episode, Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) and Survivor: Africa‘s Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper (@tbirdcooper) will catch up with a former Survivor player and talk about anything and take listener questions.
Just when you think you know Survivor 50, the legends themselves return to shake things up. Host Rob Cesternino teams up with T-Bird Cooper for a memorable "Talking with T-Bird" deep dive, retracing the roots of Survivor history and connecting it with the unpredictable energy of the current season. This episode stands out as T-Bird finally tracks down the elusive Sue Hawk, whose raw, unfiltered perspective on Survivor Borneo still sets the standard for honest gameplay and legendary jury speeches.
Survivor 50 is back in the spotlight as Rob and T-Bird relive Sue’s iconic story, all while comparing early Survivor’s “wild west” style to the fast-paced idol hunts, immunity twists, and softer conditions of the modern game. Sue doesn’t hold back, critiquing how much easier conditions seem now—from 26-day seasons to the abundance of clothes and comforts—and reflecting on the real threats and alliances that shaped Borneo. She breaks down the truth behind those first alliances, the sting of betrayal, and why every move on Survivor comes with lasting consequences, both in the game and back in the real world.
Key discussion points include:
– Sue’s behind-the-scenes journey from "off the grid" legend to Survivor All-Star, and how she finally agreed to talk after years of letters and texts with T-Bird
– Insights into Survivor Borneo’s original alliances and Sue’s “snake and rat” speech that rocked reality TV
– Raw comparisons between old-school survival—sand fleas, rain, boredom, and bush medicine—versus Survivor 50’s so-called “softball” era
– How modern twists (idols, shortened seasons) impact the intensity and credibility of winning
– Reflections on loyalty, trust, and what it really means to survive—on the island and beyond
As Rob and T-Bird revisit Sue’s legacy, they question whether today’s players could endure old-school hardships or if strategic complexity now outweighs environmental grit. Can emotional honesty still change the game, or has the new era made it all about flash and fleeting power?
Dive into this episode for Survivor storytelling that bridges generations, reveals hard truths, and keeps your torch burning for what’s coming next. Listen now to see Survivor 50 through the eyes of legends—and decide for yourself if the game will ever be the same.

When she told JT and Stephen she would be happy to take third place if they would let her stay, she was recognized as a strategic player and a big threat to the Jalapao 3, she was voted out in sixth place.

In the fifty-fourth episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 4th place finisher on Survivor: China, Denise Martin.
Denise Martin, the lunch lady from Massachusetts, was thrilled and awed to be in a Chinese temple at the beginning of her Survivor journey. She never lost that awe as she continued through the game, thoroughly appreciative of where she was lucky enough to be. Placed on the Fei Long tribe, Denise made friends and wasn't considered a threat. A lot of Denise's game ended up being influenced by food - making allies or enemies based on picks for reward challenges, her inability to swallow the balut to help her team win a challenge, twice. Her alliances and friendships were able to get her to the final four, where she lost the final immunity challenge and was voted out 3-1. As highlighted in Survivor: China, Denise has a passion for karate. She is a second degree black belt in American Kenpo Karate and owns a karate school.

| Talking with T-Bird: Caryn Groedel | 07 Aug 2022 | 01:23:18 | |
The time has come for the return of “Talking with T-Bird.” Each episode, Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) and Survivor: Africa‘s Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper (@tbirdcooper) will catch up with a former Survivor player and talk about anything and take listener questions. In the fifty-third episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 5th place finisher on Survivor: Palau, Caryn Groedel.
Caryn's journey on Survivor began on the dominant Koror tribe, where she was selected in a schoolyard pick. Although she was outside the majority alliance on Koror and was not vital to challenge success, Caryn was safe as her tribe went on to win every tribal immunity challenge that season. In lieu of a traditional merge, Stephanie, the final remaining member of the Ulong tribe was absorbed into Koror, and the individual phase of the game began. She found herself in a much better position and found trust in eventual season winner Tom Westman. After being involved in the blindside of Ian, Caryn found herself in the crosshairs and was voted out of the game on Day 36. In her personal life, Caryn is a lawyer and lives in Ohio with her husband and three daughters.

| Talking with T-Bird: Jan Gentry | 30 Jul 2022 | 01:56:39 | |
The time has come for the return of “Talking with T-Bird.” Each episode, Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) and Survivor: Africa‘s Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper (@tbirdcooper) will catch up with a former Survivor player and talk about anything and take listener questions. In the fifty-second episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 3rd place finisher on Survivor: Thailand, Jan Gentry.
Jan's Survivor career began with a big responsibility: as eldest female, she was charged with choosing the members of the Chuay Ghan tribe. Although she was criticized for choosing the older and perceived weaker castaways, it may have been that early game decision that resulted in her lasting in the game until day 38. A kooky, offbeat character, Jan both mystified and entertained her tribe. Perhaps most memorable was the pet cemetery she established on Chuay Ghan beach, best retold in Mario Lanza's Funny 115 article. Jan's non-threatening air had her protected until the Final Immunity Challenge, where season winner Brian Heidik decided to send her to jury as he felt she was very well-liked and he had a better chance against Clay Jordan. T-Bird and Rob are thrilled to catch up with Jan 20 years after her Survivor debut.

In the fifty-first episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 13th place finisher on Survivor: One World, and 19th place finisher on Survivor: Blood vs Water, Colton Cumbie.
Colton's Survivor journey began on the all-male Manono tribe has a result of the men vs women twist on Surivor: One World. Although he found it difficult to relate to the men, he rejoiced in the twist that had both men and women tribes living on one beach, and quickly bonded with the women. He was gifted an immunity idol on Day 4 from Sabrina Thompson, and he soon formed the Misfit Alliance with Troyzan, Leif, Jonas and Tarzan in order to compete with the stronger men of the tribe. Colton's ego and attitude caused problems within both tribes, but he survived through a tribe swap and a few tribal councils before fateful Day 16. Colton began by complaining of a headache, eventually collapsing and choosing to leave the game due to acute appendicitis. His decision to take his idol out of the game as a souvenir rather than pass it along to an ally was met with controversy.
Colton was asked to return for Survivor: Blood vs Water with his boyfriend Caleb Bankston. When the casting twist placed them on opposite tribes, Colton was once again an outcast on his tribe and was deeply disappointed to be separated from his loved one. On Day 7, when his tribe, Galang, went to Redemption Island to view the duel, Colton announced he was quitting the game as he felt it was unwinnable for him, he had no positive relationships with his team, and being apart from his boyfriend Caleb was too much.
Colton is one of the most controversial and memorable contestants in Survivor history. Despite his contentious seasons of Survivor, Colton has experienced a life time in his short 31 years on Earth. In addition to being the recipient of much online bullying due to his Survivor career, in 2014, his partner in Survivor and life, Caleb Bankston was tragically killed in a work accident. In this podcast, Colton bravely shares his life and Survivor experiences.

| Talking with T-Bird: Jaison Robinson | 27 Jun 2022 | 02:07:11 | |
The time has come for the return of “Talking with T-Bird.” Each episode, Rob Cesternino (@robcesternino) and Survivor: Africa‘s Teresa “T-Bird” Cooper (@tbirdcooper) will catch up with a former Survivor player and talk about anything and take listener questions. In the fiftieth episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 5th place finisher from Survivor: Samoa, Jaison Robinson.
Jaison started his Survivor: Samoa journey on the Foa Foa Tribe. Nearly voted tribe leader, losing by just one vote to future ally Mick, Jaison was well-liked by his tribe early on. Despite being on the wrong end of Russel Hantz' infamous sock-burning sabotage, the two agreed to work together in the game. The Foa Foa tribe struggled in the pre-merge portion of the game, and entered the merge with only four players to Galu's eight. Those remaining four became the Foa Foa Four, consisting of Jaison, Russel Hantz, Mick Trimming and Natalie White, and were able to stick out the rest of the game, until on day 37 the final remaining member of the Galu tribe won immunity and forced the Foa Foa Four to turn against each other. Due to his strength, Jaison blindsided at the final five and became the eight member of the jury.

In the forty-ninth episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is 16th place finisher from Survivor: Panama, "Timber" Tina Scheer.
Although she only lasted three days on Survivor: Panama, Timber Tina has made a lasting impression on viewers. Starting the game on the Casaya tribe of older women, Tina was an instant stand-out. A workhorse and well-respected by her tribemates, Tina was an integral figure in the early days, helping her tribe start fire and build a livable shelter. However, Tina's remarks at tribal council regarding the other womens' lack of outdoorsy-ness ended her game early as the first person voted out of Survivor: Panama. Outside of her Survivor life, Timber Tina is founder of the "Chics with Axes," a world-champion Lumberjill team.

In the forty-eighth episode of “Talking with T-Bird,” Rob and T-Bird’s guest is fourth place finisher from Survivor: Tocantins, Taj Johnson-George.
Tamara "Taj" Johnson George began the game on the Jalapao tribe, eventually forming one of the season's strongest alliances, The Jalapao 3 along with Survivor Know-It-All Stephen Fishbach and the eventual winner of Survivor: Tocantins, J.T. Thomas. Well-liked for her bubbly personality, Taj was also able to set up a cross-tribe alliance on Exile Island. Although her alliances were strong, Stephen suspected she would take J.T. to the final two over him, and thus convinced J.T. that they must vote out Taj at the final four. Taj only played in one season of Survivor, yet remains one of the most likeable and memorable characters of the series' 20+ year run.

He made it to the merge but the bean incident still didn't sit right with his former Boran tribemates, making him an early target and after losing the first Immunity Challenge to our very own T-Bird, he was voted out 8-2 on day 21, finishing in tenth place. | Talking with T-Bird: Danni Boatwright | 12 Apr 2021 | 01:59:29 | |
Rob and T-Bird speak with Danni Boatwright, a two-time castaway from Survivor: Guatemala and Survivor: Winners at War. On Survivor: Guatemala, the eleventh season, Danni started out on the yellow Nakum tribe, where she made good relationships with those on her tribe before being swapped over to the blue Yaxha tribe on day 9, where she continued making strong relationships. Despite her alliance being down 6-4 at the merge and her alliance members being picked off one-by-one, she won an Immunity Challenge Advantage from the Survivor Auction, which allowed her to win Immunity when she needed it most, and to ingratiate herself with members of the opposing Nakum Alliance. Danni became known as the "stealth bomber" for her under-the-radar gameplay, which helped her get the win over Stephenie LaGrossa-Kendrick at the Final Tribal Council in a 6-1 vote.
Several years later, Danni returned for Survivor: Winners at War, the show's monumental fortieth season, featuring solely victorious castaways. She was placed on the blue Sele tribe and after being on the right side of the numbers to vote out Natalie Anderson first, she struggled to adapt to the fast gameplay and paranoia led her to try to make a move against Parvati Shallow, which failed and led to her unanimous vote-out on day 6 as the third person voted out. She stayed on the Edge of Extinction the entire time, failing both re-entry challenges, and ultimately coming in nineteenth place.

On Survivor: Fiji, the fourteenth season, Anthony started out on the severely disadvantaged orange Ravu tribe, where he was targeted early for his subpar challenge performances by Mookie Lee and Rocky Reid in particular. He especially had a poor relationship with Rocky, mostly stemming from Rocky's continued rude behavior towards him. After being swapped over to the same Ravu beach with Rocky as well, he was targeted again for his weak challenge performance but stood up to Rocky for his behavior before his ultimate vote-out on day 16, leaving him in thirteenth place.

He quickly formed an alliance with Amanda Kimmel, Courtney Yates, Denise Martin, and James Clement that gave him control of the game from the onset. His game even kicked into a higher gear post-merge where he not only helped orchestrate the demolition of the original Zhan Hu tribe, but also organized the two biggest blindsides of the season on Jean-Robert and James. He was initially disliked by much of the jury for his conniving ways but after one of, if not the best, Final Tribal Council performance in the history of the game, he was able to defeat Courtney and Amanda in a 4-2-1 vote.

On Survivor: Nicaragua, NaOnka started out on the younger La Flor tribe, where she managed to take control of the game and find a Hidden Immunity Idol despite being very brash and having confrontations with a few members of her tribe. She was then swapped over to the Espada tribe without most of her allies and thus, had a breakdown that nearly led her to quit the game. At the merge, she immediately took as much food as she could at the merge feast, making even more enemies and making it tougher on her allies. Throughout the merge, she played a strategic but aggressive game, before her eventual simultaneous quit with Kelly Shirin on Day 28. NaOnka made it 28 days, ultimately becoming the fourth member of the jury, coming in ninth place.
