(00:00) An overview of these chapters.
(02:05) Blind guides lead people on snipe hunts. When we lay hold on the things that bring eternal happiness they will be never become “slippery.”
(14:45) C.S. Lewis discussed the difference between being in love versus a more majestic, long-lasting love.
(17:35) Samuel’s warnings parallel words from an older Egyptian text called The Instruction of Amenemope.
(26:21) Why signs are given by Samuel. Even with great signs we still have to choose to follow Christ.
(30:13) The sign of light at Jesus’ birth and the sign of darkness at his death teach us about the Savior.
(33:00) We are saved by the merits of Christ, not by our good works.
(34:33) The appearance of Jesus Christ’s name in the Book of Mormon.
(39:51) The Atonement of Christ overcomes both death and sin. All overcome spiritual death by being brought back into the Father’s presence at the resurrection. Only those who repent and receive Christ remain in his presence.
(46:46) Love and hate can be misunderstood in Samuel’s address, specifically when he says” the Lamanites hath he hated” (Hel. 15.4). This statement may relate to ancient Near Eastern treaties, which differ from modern conceptions of “love and hate.”
(59:57) Samuel escapes the stones and arrows of his attackers.
(1:04:42) The importance of striving for unity. The book of Helaman is a pattern for our day, exposing the weakness of a fragmented society that is deeply divided and contentious.

00:26 – An overview of John 1.

04:33 – The Gospel of John reads somewhat differently than the synoptic gospels. The invitation to “come and see” and believe in Jesus is a theme of John’s gospel message.

12:39 – John teaches that in the beginning Jesus was The Word.

18:59 – John uses temple imagery to convey his message of Jesus.

21:38 – Those who receive Jesus are given “power to become the sons of God.” Through covenants, we are born of Christ and become his sons and daughters.

23:44- John the Baptist was sent into the world to be a witness of Christ. We must be careful in our service to hold up the light and not get in the way of the light.

25:55 – The phrase “No man hath seen God at any time” presents challenges, as multiple scriptural accounts portray God being seen by prophets. The JST change helps us see this in a different way.

28:47 – John is “an Elias,” but not “The Elias” who will restore all things. This is a reference to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

35:19 – Jesus knows Nathaniel under the fig tree. He identifies himself as “the Son of Man,” a title emphasizing that he is the cosmic king that will one day make all things right, The Man of Holiness. This is a direct message that those who receive and believe Jesus will see greater things.

40:37 – Frederic Farrar’s thoughts on “Come and see.”

43:02 – John the Baptist’s seven-fold witness of Christ as a temple theme.

18:20 – Herod is threatened and angered by the birth of Jesus. His reaction invites us to consider ways we can let go of our worldly desires and come unto Christ.

(00:00) A brief overview of all 20 of the war chapters contained in Alma.
(15:34) When is conflict justified? If you want the Lord’s help you need the right attitude, motive, and must not retaliate or seek revenge.
(35:46) God will support, keep, and preserve us, so long as we are faithful unto Him.
(40:45) In 1 Nephi 14, Nephi sees a massive spiritual war in the last days where the saints are contending with an innumerable host. The formula for winning the war is connection with God. He will give us strength, hope, and courage.
(46:22) Amalickiah is a type of Lucifer. See how Amalickiah rises to power in Lamanite society.
(55:44) In what areas have you come down a little? What are you doing today that you once vowed you would never do?
(1:00:07) Moroni was a man of balanced principles. He loved liberty, yet did not delight in warfare. Like Moroni, we need to strengthen and fortify our weaknesses. Even strengths can be our downfall.
(1:05:31) Put on new armor to preserve our families. The battle with evil changes and we have to adapt.
(1:10:21) We can be happy in a world of uncertainty and turmoil.
(1:11:47) The Nephites had all power over their enemies, but they became weakened because of disunity.
(1:13:41) Morianton’s maid servant fled to the camp of Moroni.
(1:15:00) Contention and dissensions among the people of Nephi brought them down. It is better to prepare and prevent than to repair and repent.
(1:19:16) Don’t become what you hate. Unity, following God, and fighting defensively is key for the Nephite victory. Evil has to be chased out with light.
