Is your coaching supervisor also a role model? Episode 6918 Jan 202400:14:18

Working with a coaching supervisor is the gold standard of maintaining professional standards, figuring out ethical dilemmas, and to continuously grow as a coach. Most coaches look up to their supervisor as someone that they respect and whose approach to working with people they would want to emanate. You could say that a coach doesn’t have to have experience in their client’s area in order to coach them well. Could you also say that a supervisor doesn’t need to be someone with experience in your style of coaching in order to supervise you well? Or is a coaching supervisor invariably someone who’s further ahead on your journey, and hence always some sort of role model for your own practice? And what then would be the difference to mentoring? In this episode of talking about coaching our resident coaches Yannick, Siawash and Nicki will be discussing the role of supervision and the role of a coaching supervisor.

Does “free coaching” work? Episode 6804 Jan 202400:15:21

Daniel asked us whether coaching still works if the clients aren’t paying any money for the coaching. This applies to pro-bono coaching and also to circumstances like Daniel’s where it’s not appropriate to charge due to how coaching has been set up within the organisation or institution. In this episode of Talking about Coaching, Nicki, Siawash and Yannick hence discuss the crucial importance of commitment in the coaching relationship, and what other ways there are besides money to create commitment.

Are money-back guarantees a good idea? Episode 6607 Dec 202300:19:45

Following question was sent in: “Hi guys. Would love to hear your take on "money back guarantee" policy for your coaching. And possibly why you choose to implement it in a particular way.” So here we are, talking about whether money back guarantees are a great way to create the kind of confidence that gets clients through the door, or whether they add a huge weight to coaches and make it difficult to stay present and let the client do the work.

How to build a 6-figure coaching business? Episode 6523 Nov 202300:24:50

Sounds a little click-baitey perhaps, but we thought it was time to tackle this question head-on. With a number of episodes on related topics you will find plenty of practical tips on how to grow your business, and we may well do a more classical series of practical advice on how to get 6 figures in your coaching business, but today we wanted to shine a light on the question itself, what it means to be a 6-figure coach, why that may or may not be important to someone, and what’s crucial to reflect on before committing yourself to such a journey. Our resident coaches Siawash and Yannick both turn over well over the minimum threshold (though with quite different mindset around the topic), and Nicki has never really found such figures appealing or worth striving for, so in best TaC style we’re sharing our different perspectives on the topic and hope you’ll find it helpful!

I feel like a fraud. Help! Episode 6409 Nov 202300:18:09

Here’s the full question we’ve received from SY, which I took some editorial liberty with. They asked: “I feel like a fraud sometimes when I'm coaching others on topics that I personally struggle with. I know my coachees are the expert of their own life and I am not a mentor, but can't help feeling a little ashamed/ fear of being judged when I am not at a flourishing, thriving state.”

So here we are talking about feeling like an imposter when we feel we don’t have all our ducks in a row, or aren’t quite as aligned to ourselves as we feel we are expected to be.

How to have effective coaching consultations & discovery calls? Episode 7627 Jun 202400:58:11

Consultations arguably are the most important conversation coaches have with their clients, as they are instrumental in whether we will have more conversations or not. Without more conversations, we cannot help anyone. So in this conversation, Yannick and Siwash discuss the importance of consultations in coaching and the key elements of a successful discovery call: Having a plan, why we should stop trying to convince anyone, how we can manage time and structure, how to best set goals and avoid goal setting pitfalls, and how we can engage the client’s emotions and senses to create a powerful experience that makes it more likely that the client will want to move forward with coaching. We talk about the importance of exploring the cost of inaction and emphasize the need for coaches to slow down and create a safe space for clients and why it’s so important to respect their autonomy, rather than trying to influence them. The conversation concludes with a reminder to focus on building long-term relationships rather than just transactional interactions.

Keywords
coaching, consultations, discovery call, goal setting, assessing, time management, structure, flexibility, cost of inaction, exploring emotions, serving vs pleasing, respecting autonomy, long-term relationships

Takeaways
Consultations are crucial in coaching as they open the doors to potential coaching relationships.
A discovery call involves setting goals, understanding the current situation, and identifying challenges.
Engaging the client's emotions and senses in goal setting is important for creating a powerful coaching experience.
Shifting from convincing to assessing helps create a sense of trust and authenticity in the conversation.
Having a plan, managing time effectively, and being flexible in the conversation are key elements of a successful consultation. Explore the cost of inaction with clients and ask them how they would feel if they're in the same place years from now.
Create a safe space for clients to explore their emotions and make decisions.
Focus on serving clients rather than pleasing them and respect their autonomy.
Build long-term relationships with clients and prioritize the value of the relationship over the transactional time spent.

What's coaching like 'out in the real world'? Episode 6018 May 202300:44:55

What does coaching look like 'in the real world' (beyond theory and what coaching schools teach us)? Who really is a clean coach (e.g. fully ICF competency compliant or steady within a specific school of thought or particular coaching approach)? What am I allowed and not allowed to do once I’m qualified and “out there”? Inspired by, and celebrating the public launch of the next evolution of Yannick’s Coaching Lab, TaC residents Yannick and Siawash went live on Facebook to discuss these questions.

Can/should coaches stay neutral? Episode 5904 May 202300:28:02

Most coaching schools teach us to be neutral, not to share our opinions, to work client-led. Coaching in the face of the climate crisis has challenged this perspective. Can coaches also be activists? Is it ever possible not to influence a client? And shouldn’t we be a positive influence in our clients’ lives anyway? How can I be authentic AND neutral? And how might attempting to stay neutral benefit or hinder the coaching process?

In today’s episode of Talking about Coaching, our resident coaches Yannick, Siawash and Nicki discuss these questions and more.

Will AI replace me? How might coaches partner with AI? Episode 5820 Apr 202300:31:32

There’s been a lot of talk about ChatGPT recently, especially since it coached a few people reasonably well. In a recent study, AI coaches performed better than human coaches on weight loss metrics. The development of AI i exponential, so we can expect huge shifts in quality and ability. So it’s a good time to discuss whether we need to be concerned about AI replacing human coaches, and how we might (need to) partner with AI to deliver best service for our clients, and indeed perhaps to stay relevant in the industry.

Some clients just really need to hear that they’re on the right path, or that their idea is a good one, or that they’re worthy as human being. It’s a powerful thing to experience, and a gratifying gift to give. Yet, there’s a dark side to validation that our resident coaches Yannick, Siawash and Nicki point to in today’s episode. We chat about getting sucked into “validation games”, when it is and isn’t helpful for a client to validate them or their behaviour, and we explore the difference between acknowledgement and validation. The conversation takes a turn and we open quite a few doors, so we’re curious where you’ll be taking this conversation. Let us know in the comments!

I'm feeling a bit ill. Do I cancel or push through? Episode 5602 Feb 202300:20:38

Most coaches commit to showing up for their clients. Some do so much so that they’re coaching clients even when they’re really quite ill or would much rather hide under a blanket for one reason or another. What’s your threshold for cancelling a coaching session? How ill do you need to get to say “I can’t make it today”. What might the fallout be? And how might we make those decisions? Due to present circumstances, this and more is what our resident coaches Nicki, Siawash and Yannick discuss in today’s episode.

Does niching kill diversity in my client base? Episode 5506 Dec 202200:16:43

We learn and grow so much when we’re coaching clients who are very different to us. Similarly, clients benefit a lot when they work with a coach who is different to them. We probably all appreciate that diversity leads to more innovation, yet most experts will tell us to speak to a very specific kind of person when marketing our coaching businesses, with the inevitable effect that we’re, by definition, reducing diversity in our clientele. Or is it?

Today’s question was sparked during a recent episode on another podcast (Animas's Coaching Uncaged Season 13 Episode 4 with Coaching Diversity Institute Founder Towanna Burrous) and our resident coaches Yannick, Nicki and Siawash decided to take the topic up and going a little deeper on the subject matter.

Virtual or blurred backgrounds - What are you hiding? Episode 5424 Nov 202200:22:21

On some level I always think “what are you hiding?” when I see someone with a blurred or virtual background. Imagine that’s what your client thinks when they first meet you? Does it inspire trust? Not really. On the other hand there are many reasons why a coach may choose not to reveal what’s happening behind them. Same goes for clients, and even if we can see their full frame clearly, we have no idea what’s happening outside of this frame, and it’s really worth getting curious about that. So in this episode of Talking about Coaching our resident coaching Yannick, Nicki and Siawash discuss if, when and how it may or may not be helpful to curate the visual coaching experience - with some big reveals!

Prices on your website: Do or don’t? Episode 5311 Nov 202200:25:45

It’s one of the most regular topics that we see discussed: Is it going to help me to have my coaching fees on my website, or will it scare potential clients off? It seems like you can’t win either way: If the price is too low, they might think I’m not a good coach. If they’re too high, they’re not reaching out in the first place even though they probably would have invested once they get a sense for how powerful these conversations are. Do I need coaching supervision? Episode 5227 Oct 202200:23:06

Nobody needs a supervisor (with a good few notable exceptions perhaps) - every coach should want one, is the underlying message of today’s episode of Talking about Coaching. “I want every coach I know to listen to this conversation” Siawash concluded toward the end of this episode, Yannick got super excited and dove in deep on what supervision is, why it’s important and how broad the range is of what supervision can mean in practice, and Nicki shared her experience of being supervised as a relatively new coach and how she was able to secure low-cost supervision to support her practice. Come join us for a conversation about the pinnacle of reflective practice and why supervision will likely 10x your coaching revenue.

You will have heard many coaches rave about the importance of listening to your gut, your intuition, your hunches about what to do when you’re coaching, which question to ask, how to navigate your session, etc. Some coaches go as far to argue that you should always trust your intuition, so in this episode of Talking about Coaching our resident coaches Nicki, Siawash and Yannick are taking a good look at when and how following our instincts is or isn’t a good idea. Episode 50 - How can I get my ego out of the way when I'm coaching?22 Sep 202200:23:31

It happens to the best of us: Something triggers our ego and instead of being present and focused on the client, we get a little hijacked and aren’t serving the client as best as we could have. In this episode of Talking about Coaching our resident coaches Yannick, Nicki and Siawash are discussing why this is an important topic, how it can affect our work with our clients, and what we might do to let this happen as little as possible. We discuss the value of “doing your own work”, why supervision is such an important part of coaching, and we mentioned Yannick’s Coaching Uncaged episode with The Coaching Manual author Julie Starr, during which this topic was also covered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSvk86MXWF0

Where are good places to advertise myself as a coach? Episode 4705 May 202200:23:16

It seems to be the oldest question in the book: How do I get more coaching clients. I have a valuable service to offer and my clients really benefit, but how do I get my message in front of them? Those who hate being on social media or going to networks events may be considering paid advertising as a potential route into creating new leads, and so today our resident coaches Nicki, Siawash and Yannick will be talking about where coaches might advertise, what advertising is really about, how it may fit into a wider marketing strategy, and how not to waste 20k on failed campaigns.

Group Coaching: what’s that about? Episode 4621 Apr 202200:29:33

More and more coaches are interested in working with groups. SOme of that is motivated by being able to make coaching more affordable, and hence accessible - perfect for coaches who want to put their fees up but concerned that coaching shouldn’t be exclusive. But working with groups comes with layers of added complexity and it can be quite elusive as to what it is and how it can work. From life coaching groups to working with leadership teams, it’s a broad range, and today our resident hosts Yannick, Siawash and Nicki will be shining a light on how we might understand group coaching, what group work might look like, some of the benefits and pitfalls, as well as some practical insight into how Siawash and Yannick structure and run their groups.

My client’s goal is abstract and vague. How can I make it tangible and SMART? Episode 4507 Apr 202200:15:55

We’ve all been there: our client comes to coaching and present with something supre vague, like feeling more fulfilled, calmer, wanting a “better mindset”, or feeling more authentic. How might we work with something like that? Can we make such a goal more SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound)? Is that even desirable or of service to the client? In this episode our resident coaches Siawash, Nicki and Yannick discuss various ways to work with abstract goals, whether that’s making them more tangible, even measurable, or to explore what this goal is really about and to sit with the uncertainty and learn to trust the coaching process, even if it’s not as clear as we’d like it to be.

My client is not getting the results they came for. What do I do? - Episode 4417 Mar 202200:21:01

Most of us have been there: our clients are not hitting their targets, they’re not doing their work, in some way or another they’re not achieving what they came to coaching for. Is this your fault? The client’s? Do any of you need to work harder? How do you address this? In this episode of talking about coaching our residents Yannick, Siawash and Nicki are exploring how we might navigate such situations. We talk about contracting, how to make sure that your client is getting what they want, or perhaps what they need, we talk about what the purpose of coaching is and appreciate the range of coaching approaches, some more and some less fixated, oriented, or focused on results.

I sign up clients by talking to people. How can I create more conversations? Episode 4303 Mar 202200:20:54

Steve Chandler and his disciples teach us that coaching clients are created through conversations, and they encourage us to seek as many conversations as we can with the intent to serve whomever we talk to. Now what happens when we run out of people to talk to? Somewhat rephrased for the sake of space in today’s episode’s title, the original question for today is: “I ran out of people to talk to about coaching. How can I create more conversations that may lead to paying clients?”
Siawash starts us off by questioning the intent of the inquiry and along the way we discuss ways in which we might create more conversations, that, indeed, may lead to more paying clients, even though we may need to let go of being too attached to that being the outcome.

Leading questions - Are they bad? Episode 42 17 Feb 202200:26:45

In this episodes we’re discussing leading questions, and whether they’re really a big no-no, as often taught in coach training programmes, or whether there may be some value in offering direction as a coach, or even to ask questions in a way that makes the client think they’ve come up with the solution themselves, empowering in some way, manipulative if you look at it differently. We discuss the range of leading questions, the ethics of consciously leading your clients, the weight of taking on the responsibility when we choose to lead our clients, and the importance of supervision as to avoid leading in an unconscious way.

I'm new to coaching. Am I ready to take on paid clients? Episode 7513 Jun 202400:15:49

Yannick and Siwash discuss whether coaches who have just finished their coaching qualification are ready to take on paid clients. They address the hesitancy coaches often feel about charging for their services and provide insights on when and how to start charging. They emphasize that everyone can charge for their time and that clients want to invest in their own journey. The conversation also explores the importance of transparency, setting up a review process, and overcoming personal money stories.

Takeaways

  • Coaches who have just finished their coaching qualification are ready to take on paid clients.
  • Everyone can charge for their time, regardless of their level of experience as a coach.
  • Starting with free sessions and then reviewing the value provided can help coaches gain confidence and determine their rates.
  • Clients want to give something back and feel more committed when they invest monetarily in the coaching relationship.
  • Coaches should be transparent about their charging process and be open to non-monetary forms of repayment.

I keep slipping into coaching mode with friends. What do I do? Episode 4103 Feb 202200:15:01

Most coaches have experienced this: we’re with a friend, they tell us about a problem, dream or challenge they experience, and before we know it we’ve got our coaching hat on and asking questions, feeding back, clarifying, summarising or applying a process to help them figure this out. We likely didn’t ask for permission to coach them. We may be quite different with our coaching hat on and our friend somewhat irritated. Possibly they know us like that because we aren’t ‘doing’ coaching, we ARE coaches. Is it even a problem (as the question implies) or are we being an even better friend? How might this compare to other professions and when might it be appropriate to wear our coaching hat for a moment, perhaps even invite a friend into a formal coaching space? What are the pitfalls when we coach a friend? And how might we contract in such a situation? In this episode our resident coaches Yannick and Nicki talk about this and more, and we give special thanks to Alice for sending in the question!

My client sees me as the expert. How do I manage the power dynamics? Episode 4020 Jan 202200:23:35

Some coaches set themselves up as the expert in a certain area or niche. Others work very hard to meet their clients at eye level as to facilitate a process in which they can create their own expertise and take full responsibility for the way forward. And by no means is this a black-and-white issue in coaching. Sometimes the client maneuvers us into a position of expert as to avoid responsibility or simply because expert advice is what they’re after. It can be a complex dynamic to navigate. In this episode of Talking about Coaching our resident coaches Yannick and Nicki discuss the various elements at play in such a situation, the risks and benefits of being (seen as) the expert, and how we might manage such a situation when it presents itself. We also invite coaches to reflect to what extent they contribute to this process and what they can do to prevent it (if, indeed, that’s what they want).

I have a hangover, do I need to cancel my coaching session? Episode 3911 Dec 202100:15:53

What started as a joke question after Nicki missed our last recording session became an interesting question about when to cancel a coaching session due to pain, feeling unwell or other distractions that may prevent us from being fully present with our clients. How much can we keep in our metaphorical box? At what point is it no longer appropriate to coach? How might we have that conversation? What’s at stake when we a) cancel or b) go ahead with the session? Do we need to disclose what’s going on for us? In this episode our resident coaches Yannick and Nicki have a much richer conversations than they had anticipated. Shout outs to Siawash who couldn’t make it today (non-hangover related ;) )

Do I need to be obsessed or grind long hours to be a successful coach? Episode 3811 Nov 202100:31:01

We hear this a lot from the coaches who are most visible on social media: In order to be successful you must be obsessed with coaching and/or with building a business. You must do the grind if you want to make it. Those who work the hardest are the most successful. Coaches who are obsessed with helping their clients, with personal development or with a particular style of coaching, those will be successful. It is often implied that those who are not obsessed or work 14 hours/day won’t make it. In this episode of the Talking about Coaching Podcast our resident coaches Siawash and Nicki talk about how we might define success, obsession or grind and offer some context on the discussion. We share some of our personal stories and approaches, challenge some of the success narratives out there and we offer a way to success without detriment to your wellbeing and livelihood.

What needs to be in my coaching contract? - Episode 3714 Oct 202100:29:42

Good contracting may be one of the most important skills of a successful coach. Most times when a coach feels stuck with a client, doesn’t know how to proceed or encounters a challenging situation, the answers lies in what you’ve agreed with this client. We’ve interpreted this question in two ways: 1) What do I need to start practicing as a coach? And 2) When a client signs up for coaching, what might I send them to get going and transition well into the process of coaching? So here we are talking about beginnings and how might get going when starting our coaching business or when starting to work with a new client.

How can I create a steady stream of clients? - Episode 3405 Aug 202100:12:04

So many coaches dread doing “marketing”, being visible on social media, figuring out advertising, or going to network events, only to create a steady stream of clients for their coaching business. While there is no way around building bridges or creating touch points of some sort between you and prospective clients, there are many ways to do this, and in today’s episode our resident coaches Yannick & Siawash are talking about different pathways towards creating a steady flow of conversations and what you need to convert these into paying clients. In the process we’re reframing the terms “sales” and “marketing” and we’re offering ample advice and valuable ideas for how you can stabilize your income from your coaching work by learning some simple business practices and thinking about which of these might resonate with you.

Episode 33 - I want to charge more. How can I increase my prices? (Part 2)22 Jul 202100:34:28

Last episode we talked about why every coach can (even should) be confident about charging for the space they create for their clients. “Just” being there for and with them, offering our undivided attention, helps greatly and often works wonders. However, many coaches are keen to increase their prices but don’t feel confident about it. In this episode our resident coaches Yannick & Siawash are picking up the thread from the conversation we’ve started and talking about the many factors that play into our coaching fees. Offering lots of practical advice and encouragement for coaches who are earning less than £5000/month, we’re talking you through the following list of elements that will (even should) influence and guide the kind of fees you’re charging. We’re confident that by the end of this episode you will feel compelled, and have a lot of solid reasons to increase your current fees. These are:

  • Client's ROI/the value that the client is walking away with
  • Market rates or what the competition (you care about) charges
  • What you're comfortable with/what you can say or pitch confidently (which can be worked on/improved with practice)
  • What resources the client has access to (salary, assets, savings, wealthy relatives/partners, sponsors, etc.)
  • The cost of acquisition (advertising, time spend networking, writing proposals, tickets to community events, etc)
  • What you've invested in your coach training/journey
  • What you might earn if you weren't a coach or if you'd spend your time doing something different
  • What it takes to get/keep the client really committed to the process
  • How much would you like to/do you need to earn?
  • Coaching experience/skills
  • Time spent outside the coaching room (e.g. tendering a contract, pre-meetings with HR or managers, writing reports or emails, etc.)
  • Expert knowledge, expertise or experience with what the client is struggling with (for coaches who offer guidance, advice or direction)
  • How large is your niche is (the fewer coaches who can do what you do, the more you are worth)

Pain vs. Gain: How to best market your coaching? Episode 7430 May 202400:26:26

The conversation explores the question of whether to lead with problems or results when selling coaching services. Yannick and Siwash discuss the effectiveness of selling a solution to a problem and the alignment with positive psychology. They also explore the power of leading with a vision and inspiring clients to move towards their desired outcomes. The conversation delves into the different approaches of being a painkiller or a vitamin, and the importance of choosing the type of clients and work that align with one's values. The hosts also discuss the five stages of awareness and how to create content for each stage. The conversation concludes by emphasizing the importance of finding a marketing frequency that works for each coach.

Takeaways

  • Selling a solution to a problem can be effective, but it may not align with positive psychology and the desire to inspire clients towards their dreams and aspirations.
  • Leading with a vision and focusing on the desired outcome can be more powerful and impactful in the long run.
  • There is no one right way to sell coaching services, and it depends on the type of clients and work that align with one's values and goals.
  • Understanding the five stages of awareness (unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, and most aware) can help in creating targeted marketing content for different stages of the customer journey.
  • Finding a marketing frequency that works for each individual is important, and it is not necessary to constantly create new content but rather focus on creating valuable and impactful content.

This can have a variety of reasons such as our own money stories, what the word “sell” means to us, and often a lack of some basic technical skills with regards to how we talk to our clients and how we run consultations. We believe every coach can (even should) be confident about charging for their time and the space they create for their clients. “Just being there” for and with them, offering our undivided attention, helps greatly and often works wonders. However, many coaches are keen to increase their prices but don’t think that their coaching is worth it. In this short episode our resident coaches Yannick,  Siawash and Nicki are laying the groundwork for a longer conversation about how to raise our prices.

Coaching while walking: Is walk&talk a viable approach? Episode 3117 Jun 202100:13:02

Even before we were hit with a global pandemic, coaching while walking, walk’n’talk, coaching in nature and other forms of being outside of a coaching “room” have sparked our interest. Now, more than ever, coaching clients outside has become relevant to many coaches. That’s why in this episode our resident coaches Yannick, Siawash and Nicki are discussing the benefits and pitfalls of coaching clients while walking. Done well your clients are in their bodies and there’s lots to be picked up on on a somatic level. You’re working shoulder-to-shoulder and this creates a wonderful dynamic. Elements you encounter on your walk can be used for the coaching work or as metaphors or here-and-now moments of learning and insight. Done badly it can seem unprofessional and awkward. So let’s talk about it. If you’ve done some walk-and-talks, we look forward to you sharing your input and experiences on this topic.

I find it really hard to end sessions on time and often go over. What can I do? Episode 3003 Jun 202100:26:51

A surprising majority of coaches we talk to regularly go over the agreed time for their coaching sessions. At the very least it happens occasionally. In therapy it’s a big no-go! Coaches seem to be a lot more relaxed about this, some even plan going over time into their contract and are more flexible. What we do know is that it affects our relationship and the boundaries we create in some form or another, and so in today’s episode our resident coaches Yannick Jacob, Siawash Zahmat and Nicki Drab are talking about time, boundaries and some really practical advice on how we can end sessions on time, as well as when it may be important to go over.
