A Fresh Conversation with Gary Yeow: Alternative Methodologies in Architecture
Season 12 · Episode 14
lundi 20 février 2023 • Duration 49:17
In an interview, the guest who is Gary Yeow, together with Naziaty, resulted in two podcasters discussing alternative methodologies in architecture. More of a conversation dedicated to the role of the Malaysian Architects Association (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia - PAM) and how open engagements such as discourse and debate are needed to address all other issues and sentiments surfacing elsewhere in informal events, besides PAM's partiality to professional practice and less debatable topics. Other matters in this episode include how younger architects like Gary, view architecture practice and negotiating life after graduation.
Gary Yeow is co-founder of projectxyz – a design collective engaged in wide-ranging projects from competitions to furniture and installation design, always rooted in user experience and architecture. Gary also hosts the xyzpodcast, and is exploring writing, event, and curation with a keen interest in connecting the linkage between architectural education and practice.

In-depth: what I talk about when I talk about design thesis - Part 2
Season 12 · Episode 9
lundi 6 février 2023 • Duration 29:10
The 2nd Part episode starts with listening to the collective voice calling for the design thesis as a crucial year, the beginning part of an architect's journey into their career, to be led by a design practitioner and not the academic. The project could fuel the passion of the budding architect to explore their interest and life-long learning.
This episode will explain the 3 fallacies (issues) that academicians do regarding the design thesis course.
1) Making the design thesis like a 'thesis', as arguably there is a difference between 'design problems' as opposed to 'problem statement' (hypothesis). At the end of the day, the complexities of architecture design are not merely technical competencies but much more varied and complex.
2) Linking design thesis to social science research (masters dissertation) limits the exploration of architecture which is a combination of arts and sciences and not at all social sciences like real estate, planning, and quantitative surveying. Both have different aims and objectives as learning courses.
3) Other disciplines such as medicine and engineering stick to their guns, like medicine would insist on 'clinical practice', so why not architecture vanguards uphold our discipline of 'architecture practice'? Hence the need to have a design thesis studio led by design practitioners and not full-time academics.

In-depth: What I talk about when I talk about ‘design thesis’ - Part 1
Season 12 · Episode 8
lundi 6 février 2023 • Duration 41:11
A two-parter starting with this episode - why the design practitioner needs to be the leader in the design thesis studio unit for the final year of the graduating architect. And not the full-time academic.
A crucial understanding of how to design, manage and provide for the best start to a soon-to-be graduating student of architecture journey into the world of practice where the student seeks a topic and a supervisor from the architecture practice industry. Why not a full-time academic? Watch out for the next part, but listen to this one first.

Design Thesis - A Crucial Year For The Graduating Architect
Season 12 · Episode 7
samedi 4 février 2023 • Duration 27:38
Special Architecture Education Podcast Review on the Design Thesis
After much discussion in the last decade, there are some hard truths to face. The most decisive year in architecture education is the fifth year where for the design thesis program, the students need to choose their own topic and seek a supervisor or a tutor who comes from the industry.
A person collaborating with the student having an industry background is an important factor as the fresh graduate will be going into the industry the next year. By the end of the fifth year, the student will gain more confidence and be much more relaxed to go into the industry. More autonomy needs to be given to the student to collaborate and decide in that final year.
