DBT Skills: Opposite Action24 Jan 202500:20:57

Time to discuss Opposite Action! Long story short - Opposite Action means doing the opposite of what you want to do when what you want to do isn't effective.

Easier said than done of course - but an incredibly helpful tool once you're practiced at it. Part of that practice is recognizing unskillful urges, and the learning the balance between feeling emotions and taking action to improve one's situation.

DBT Skills: DEAR MAN 29 Nov 202400:35:57

DEAR MAN is Laurie's favorite DBT skill. If you've listened to any episodes of this series or her previous podcasts you'll have heard ALL about it. But it's such a helpful skill that there's always an excuse to hear other examples where it's used.

The DEAR MAN skill, from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), helps effectively ask for what you want or say no while maintaining relationships and self-respect. It stands for: Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, Negotiate. It’s used to communicate needs clearly and handle conflicts constructively.

It's SO helpful!

Taking Action Against Stigma (feat. Sonia)27 Sep 202400:47:52

Sonia (@_soniastewart_) is a great example of what it means to be an ally to people with specific highly stigmatized mental health challenges and what you can do to help break down stigma when you see it. Sonia is a Masters of Counselling student who reached out to Laurie after her program was providing stigmatizing, unbiased and harmful stereotypes in their course work about BPD.

She knew that it was important for her cohort to hear from someone who lives with BPD and does lots of advocacy on stigma to better support them clinicians. She believes that by doing so they can learn to work with the person in front of us, not by their label or what the DSM-5 tells us we should expect.

To learn more about Laurie and Sonia's friend Brent you can watch his Ted Talk about living with Schizophrenia here

No Longer Denying Diagnosis Leads to Normal-ish Parenting (feat. Jennifer)27 Jun 202501:01:26

Jennifer is a marriage and family counsellor living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). She shares her personal journey, including her experiences with therapy, the importance of receiving the correct information/diagnosis in order to plan treatment, parenting, and the stigma she’s experienced.

Jennifer has spent a lot of time talking to her kids in an age appropriate way about her BPD and explaining what it means. This is helpful to her so she can stop the "hand-me-down" disordered thinking.

*just a note that Laurie refers to Jennifer in the episode as a counsellor rather than a therapist. That's Laurie's Canadian talking. Jennifer is a Licensed Marriage and Family THERAPIST so for the purpose of this episode please consider those to be synonymous words.*

Some of the resources that helped Jennifer the most are:

The books she's read to/with her kids:

  • Meltdown Moments: Helping families to have conversations about mental health and their feelings and experiences
  • An Umbrella for Alex
  • Millie the Cat has Borderline
  • Lizzy Lives In An Angry House: Learning to thrive in the midst of an angry environment
  • The Weather House: Living with a parent with BPD

The books she's used for herself/her clients:

  • Sometimes I Act Crazy: Living with BPD
  • I Hate You-Don’t Leave Me: Understanding the Borderline Personality
  • The Body Awareness Workbook for Trauma - Julie Brown Yau
  • The Courage to Heal - Bass and Davis
  • Trauma Treatment Toolbox - Sweeton
  • The Neurodivergent Friendly Workbook of DBT Skills - Wise

And here are the two articles Jennifer wrote in December 2024:

Laurie's to watch BPD documentary:

A Football Life documentary about BPD hero Brandon Marshall

BPD Symptoms: Unstable and Intense Interpersonal Relationships20 Jun 202501:15:36

It's week 2 of the BPD Symptoms mini series! This week, Laurie, Heather, Kat, and Shane sit down to talk about the rollercoaster of intense relationships — you know, the ones that swing between idealization and devaluation, splitting, with favorite people and kind of take over our lives....

We unpack what it’s like to move through the world with the ability to connect deeply in the first moment, the fear of losing it, and the positives and negatives of the intensity of the relationships.

We talk A LOT about splitting and favorite people/persons.

From family to friendships to romantic partners — including polyamorous and non-traditional setups — we reflect on what makes relationships so complicated (and so meaningful) for those of us with BPD.

BPD Symptoms: Frantic Efforts to Avoid Real or Imagined Abandonment 06 Jun 202501:25:21

Welcome to a brand new Super Feeler mini-series!

Every other week, we're diving deep into the nine symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) with a panel of people who live it!

In our first episode, we’re talking about frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment — a symptom that many of us feel in our bones. We get into what this looks like in relationships, parenting, friendships, and how we've started to build more self-trust and resilience.

This series will feature some Super Feelers you already know and love (Dave, Shannon, Kat and Heather) and welcomes a new member to our panel Shane!

FYI Laurie's mic was abandoning her on this episode so the audio quality is not as good as usual - it'll be back to it's normal quality next week! SORRY!!!! Even the perfectionist in me couldn't force these fine folks to re-record an entire episode because of a tech issue.
