66. Permission to Be Left Alone on Mother’s Day07 May 202500:05:04

Hey Doc —

Mother’s Day is coming up. And whether you're excited, dreading it, or just… indifferent, I want you to hear this clearly:

You deserve what you want for Mother’s Day.

If you want brunch and balloons — I hope you get them.
If you want a quiet day to yourself with no one touching you, asking you for anything, or expecting you to perform joy — I hope you get that too.

Let this episode be your reminder that:

✔ You don’t need to celebrate Mother’s Day the way others think you should
✔ Wanting solitude doesn’t make you a bad mom
✔ It’s okay to feel conflicting things — joy, guilt, relief, longing — all at once
✔ You deserve a day that feels like yours — even if it doesn’t make sense to anyone else

Happy early Mother’s Day, Doc. However you choose to spend it, I hope it feels like yours.

65. No Judgment, Just Joy: Be the Mom You Want to Be30 Apr 202500:12:32

Hey Doc —

So… are you a Meghan or a Mindy?

This episode was inspired by With Love, Meghan on Netflix — and one very honest moment between Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and her guest, Mindy Kaling.

Meghan? Fully in her element: cooking, entertaining, feeding people with joy.
Mindy? Fully supportive — and also like, “Yeah, I pay someone for that.”

Both women were showing up with clarity. And that got me thinking:
Why do so many Physician moms feel like they have to pick a side — and then explain it to everyone?

Here’s what I’m unpacking in this episode:

🔸 Why your joy doesn’t have to look like someone else’s
🔸 The difference between inspiration and pressure
🔸 How burnout can dim even the things we usually love
🔸 And why standing firm in your identity — whether in motherhood or medicine — matters more than ever

This isn’t an episode about choosing between the soft life and outsourcing.
It’s a reminder that you get to decide what kind of life feels good to you — and you don’t have to apologize for it.

🎧 Tune in now, and send this to the Physician mom in your life who needs permission to stop performing and start owning who she is.

Ep. 56 The Hour That Changes Everything: Why Time Investment Matters for Physician Moms26 Feb 202500:12:12

Hey doc!

Can we talk about time? Not the "how to manage it better" conversation - we're going deeper today. I'm sharing how one hour of intentional investment changed my life from running on empty to actually enjoying each moment.

In this episode, I take you through:

  • My journey from 60-hour workweeks to intentional living
  • The real reason why "I don't have time" isn't serving you
  • My transition from skeptical to transformed CEO of my life
  • How investing in yourself creates space for joy
  • The ripple effect of intentional time investment on you and your whole family

Key Takeaways:

  • Time investment works like exercise - it gives back more than it takes
  • True CEOs don't do everything - they make strategic choices
  • Support systems multiply your time, not drain it
  • Growth requires intention, not just better scheduling
  • Peace comes from purposeful choices, not perfect planning

This episode is for every Physician mom ready to move beyond survival mode and create space for authentic joy in their lives.

55. You Are Your Best Asset: My $52,600 Investment in 202426 Feb 202500:07:51

Hey doc,

I'm pulling back the curtain on my biggest investment of 2024 - $52,600 in coaching. Not a down payment, not a luxury vacation, not private school tuition. I invested this amount in my own growth, and I'm sharing why I consider it the best financial decision I made last year.

On today's episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I share:

  • Why I believe investing in coaching is just as valuable as traditional investments
  • The transformative returns that can't be measured in dollars
  • How investing in yourself impacts your entire ecosystem
  • The real meaning of generational wealth beyond finances
  • Why peace and joy are worth every penny

This episode goes beyond just sharing a number. It's about examining our relationship with investing in ourselves and challenging the notion of what makes a "worthwhile" investment. I share my own journey of prioritizing myself and the profound impact it's had on my marriage, children, patient care, and sense of self.

Most importantly, investing in your own growth creates lasting transformation that extends far beyond yourself - impacting your children, your practice, and generations to come.

If you've ever hesitated to invest in yourself, questioned the value of personal growth work, or needed permission to prioritize your own development, this episode is for you.

54. Finding Your People: The Power of Community in Physician Motherhood19 Feb 202500:29:17

Hey doc,

Today I'm sharing a deeply personal story about my journey discovering the transformative power of finding the right community. I open up about my experience in two very different coaching programs and what they taught me about trusting my intuition.

I'll walk you through:

  • Why community often matters more than the actual coaching
  • How being in the right group setting creates growth through osmosis
  • The importance of psychological safety when building deep connections
  • What happens when you trust vs ignore your inner knowing
  • The value of seeing others both ahead of and behind you on similar journeys

This episode goes far beyond just announcing my new group coaching program (though yes, The Connected Motherhood Experience is officially launching!). It's about the profound impact of finding spaces where you can show up fully as yourself - where you're truly seen, validated and pushed to grow.

I share the hard lessons I learned about trusting myself and choosing carefully where I invest my energy and vulnerability. Most importantly, I discuss why having people around you who genuinely understand your experience as a Physician mom is invaluable for your growth.

If you've ever felt unsure about which communities are right for you, or questioned whether you should trust your gut about a space not feeling quite right, this episode is for you.

The Connected Motherhood Experience is more than just another coaching program - it's a sanctuary where Black Physician moms can find true sisterhood, cultivate lasting peace, and create the lives they deserve.

If you're ready to move from overwhelm to peace while building meaningful connections with others who truly get it, schedule a Peace and Power session with me. We'll explore what real support could look like for you.

64. This Is Your Permission Slip to Live Fully and Unapologetically23 Apr 202500:15:30

Hey Doc —

When was the last time someone gave you permission to just want what you want? To go after comfort, joy, ease, or pleasure — without guilt, without justification?

This episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨ is that permission slip.

I’m sharing the moments in my life where a friend, a coach, or even a passing comment gave me the clarity and courage to make a decision that changed everything.

Here’s what I want you to hear:

You don’t need to wait.
You don’t have to justify your joy.
You deserve a life that feels good.

In this episode, I’m unpacking:

🔸 Why joy, comfort, and pleasure are not frivolous — they’re essential
🔸 How others gave me permission I didn’t even know I needed
🔸 Why you deserve to make bold decisions simply because they feel good
🔸 The power of modeling desire and ease to your children and yourself

This is your sign, your nudge, your full-body yes.

Buy the ticket. Lease the car. Prioritize pleasure. And feel zero guilt.
Because you deserve it.

🎧 Listen now and send this to another Physician mom who needs this gift, too.

44. In Defense of Being 'Slow': Why Excellence Takes Time11 Dec 202400:06:08

Hey doc! In today's episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I'm challenging the criticism many excellent Physicians face: "Why are you so slow?"

The "slow" Physicians often have the happiest patients, best outcomes, and fewest complications. There's a direct connection between taking time and providing excellent care.

We explore:

  • Why patients prefer thorough care over quick visits
  • How comprehensive documentation improves continuity of care
  • The connection between surgical precision and better outcomes
  • Why patient education reduces complications

Key insights: When you take time with patients, they understand their health better, follow treatment plans more effectively, and experience fewer complications. Your detailed documentation helps other providers deliver better care. Your careful surgical technique prevents readmissions.

Doc, your commitment to thorough care creates better outcomes. Don't let anyone rush your excellence.

39. Big Moves with Little Ones: The Perfect Time for a Career Pivot06 Nov 202400:09:38

Hey doc, in this episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I dive into a topic that's been on my heart—starting your private practice when you have young children. I know it sounds radical, but I’m standing 10 toes down: these early years are the PERFECT time to make that big leap into entrepreneurship, especially as a Physician.

Inspired by an anonymous post from a fellow Physician mom who’s juggling two young kids and considering opening a practice, I share my thoughts on why now is the time to make bold moves. Key takeaways:

  • Early motherhood can be the ideal time for career shifts
  • Your kids won't remember your absence when they're very young
  • Community support is vital for Physician entrepreneurs
  • Outsourcing and getting help is essential, not optional
  • It's possible to avoid burnout and follow your dreams

63. Who’s Really Raising Your Kids? You Are. Period.16 Apr 202500:21:47

Hey Doc —

Let me ask you something: Who raised you?

For me, it was Selwyn and Lucille Luces — two hardworking people from Trinidad and Tobago who gave me and my sisters a childhood full of love, structure, and support. They had help. They worked full-time. And still, they absolutely raised us.

This week on ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I’m unpacking the guilt we’ve been taught to carry as working moms — especially as Physician moms — when we seek the support we need.

I share:
🔸 Why this narrative is especially harmful for Physician moms
🔸 How my upbringing shaped my confidence as a working mother
🔸 What raising kids actually means (hint: it’s not about hours)
🔸 Why intentional time matters more than total time
🔸 How to reframe guilt around help — and embrace your village

Whether you have an au pair, daycare, school, or family support, YOU are still raising your kids. And this episode is your permission slip to get the help you need without the shame.

🎧 Listen now — and send this one to the Physician mom friend who needs it most.

  • How your mind's algorithm works (just like social media!)
  • The impact of what you focus on in your daily life
  • Why you need to be selective about your social media groups and friends
  • The science behind affirmations and why they work
  • How to "hack" your algorithm for more positivity and success

Key takeaways:

  1. Your subconscious mind focuses on what you pay attention to
  2. Be mindful of the content you consume and the company you keep
  3. Affirmations work by training your subconscious, even if you don't believe them at first

33. Debunking the Myth of Maternal Instinct: Why Education trumps 'Intuition' in Parenting02 Oct 202400:12:34

Hey doc! In this episode, I'm challenging the notion of 'maternal instinct.' I dive into:

  • Why most of what we consider 'instinct' is actually learned behavior
  • How socialization shapes our parenting skills
  • The pressure this myth puts on both moms and dads
  • Why recognizing this can lead to more compassionate parenting

Key takeaways:

  1. True instincts are about survival, not diaper changes
  2. Most parenting skills are learned, not innate
  3. Recognizing this can relieve pressure and guilt
  4. We need to educate all genders equally about childcare

Remember, doc, not feeling an instant connection or knowing everything doesn't make you a bad parent. Let's reframe our expectations and give ourselves (and our partners) some grace!

  • What being in flow means and how it applies to medicine
  • My personal experience of being in flow during a busy day
  • Why support is essential for achieving and maintaining flow
  • How lack of support can stifle creativity and productivity

Key takeaways:

  1. Flow isn't just for artists - it applies to medicine too

62. Why You're Not Actually the CEO of Your Household (And How to Become One)09 Apr 202500:08:18

Hey doc! In this episode of ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨, I’m challenging the popular narrative of Physician moms as “household CEOs.” Because let’s be honest—most of us are actually functioning like overworked managers, not empowered leaders. And today, we’re going to break that all the way down.

I dive into:

  • Why most Physician moms are functioning as managers, not CEOs
  • What real CEOs like Jeff Bezos actually do with their time (hint: it’s not cooking meals or doing pickups)
  • The critical difference between true delegation and “wishful thinking” delegation
  • How operating like a true CEO creates space for what actually matters

Key takeaways:

  • CEOs delegate effectively and operate at the top of their license
  • True delegation includes training, feedback, and letting go
  • When you’re doing other people’s jobs, burnout follows
  • The highest use of your time is connecting with your family and excelling in your career—not managing details

This is a must-listen for any Physician mom who’s juggling clinical responsibilities, parenting, partnerships, and everything in between. If you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start building a life that reflects your worth, this conversation is your permission slip.

It’s time for a promotion, doc. Let’s transform you from an overworked manager to the visionary CEO of your life.

The Power of Words: A Bedtime Lesson28 Aug 202400:03:50

Hey doc! In this episode, I'm sharing a personal story about a bedtime incident with my son. It's a simple tale, but it packs a powerful message about:

  • The importance of teaching kids to communicate effectively
  • How we can empower our children to use their words
  • The difference between responding to a baby's cries and a older child's needs

Key takeaways:

  1. Encourage kids to use words instead of crying to express needs
  2. Empower children by reminding them of their ability to communicate
  3. Teach problem-solving skills from an early age
  4. The power of getting down to a child's level when teaching a lesson

Remember, our kids are always learning from us. Let's teach them to use their words and their power!

27. Letting Go of Supermom: The Power of Accepting Help28 Aug 202400:08:02

Hey doc! Let’s talk about the "Supermom" trap, and my personal story about a time I refused help, even when it was readily available. In this episode, I share:

  • Why refusing help can actually slow us down
  • How the "Supermom" identity might be holding you back
  • The freedom that comes with accepting help

Some big takeaways:

  1. There's no prize for doing everything alone
  2. Accepting help doesn't make you less of a rock star
  3. Letting go of "Supermom" can actually make you more efficient
  4. It's okay to prioritize your safety and sanity

We'll unpack the pressure to do it all, the fleeting satisfaction of that Supermom title, and the importance of releasing the need to carry everything ourselves. Let's ditch the cape and embrace being human!

Redefining Experts: A Fresh Perspective on Motherhood Advice21 Aug 202400:06:03

Hey doc, in this episode I'm challenging the idea of "experts" in motherhood. I dive into:

  • Why everyone seems to be an "expert" when it comes to motherhood
  • How to approach advice, including mine, as inspiration rather than absolute truth
  • The real purpose behind bringing guests onto the podcast
  • What to expect from upcoming interview episodes

Key takeaways:

Hey there, doc! Ready for a mindset shake-up? In this episode, I'm getting real about my own Instagram struggles and the powerful shift that's changing everything.

We're diving into:

Here's your challenge: Pay attention to your self-talk this week. What limiting beliefs are you reinforcing? Can you flip them to positive "I am" statements? It might feel silly at first (trust me, I get it), but the results could surprise you.

Remember, what you focus on expands. So let's focus on growth, connection, and spreading our message to the physician moms who need it most.

21. Dream Big, Doc: Discovering What You Truly Want24 Jul 202400:07:29

Hey doc, let's talk about what YOU want. Yeah, you! When was the last time you actually thought about what you want in life?

In this episode, I'm challenging you to reconnect with your deepest desires and dreams. I know, I know - you're thinking, "Dr. Toya, I barely have time to pee, let alone dream!" But hear me out.

We dive into:

• Why knowing what you want is crucial (even if it seems impossible right now)

• How feeling directionless can leave you stuck and unfulfilled

• The power of having a "dream life" vision (trust me, it's game-changing)

• Getting past that "I don't have time" excuse (because we both know that's what it is)

• The unexpected joy that comes from letting yourself dream BIG

I share a story about a client who listened to my "Your Dream Life or Mine" episode (go check it out if you haven't!). Just thinking about her dream life - even though it felt impossible - made her happier than she'd been all week. You deserve that feeling too!

So here's your challenge: Take baby steps to create some thinking time. Maybe it's a 10-minute solo walk, locking yourself in the bathroom (we've all been there), or even folding laundry in peace. Find what works for you.

I want you to dream EXPANSIVELY. Don't worry about the "how" right now. Ask yourself:

• What do I want my life to look like in 5 or 10 years?

• Am I happy with my current practice?

• Have I ever thought about leadership roles? Or maybe leaving medicine altogether?

• What childhood passions have I put on the back burner?

Remember, this is just step one. We'll dive deeper into making these dreams a reality in future episodes. For now, give yourself permission to think and feel the excitement of possibility.

When you're done dreaming, share this episode with another physician mom who needs this reminder. Subscribe to Stethoscopes and Strollers for weekly doses of real talk and inspiration as we navigate this wild ride of medicine and motherhood together.

Let's reclaim our dreams, one intentional thought at a time. You've got this, doc!

20. Take the Win: Embracing Yes Without Overthinking17 Jul 202400:06:34

Welcome back to *Stethoscopes and Strollers*! In this episode, I discuss the importance of taking the win when it’s presented to you. Often, we can overthink our partner’s responses and miss out on the positive moments. Let’s dive into why embracing a yes, even if it’s not enthusiastic, can make a huge difference in our relationships and mental health.

Episode Highlights:

- Setting the Stage: Picture this: you ask your husband to join a playdate with your son. He hesitates, asks a few questions, makes a face, but then says yes. What’s your reaction?

- Overthinking Yes: Are you like me, questioning his reluctance, wondering if he really wants to go, or feeling hurt by his lack of enthusiasm?

- The Impact of Expectations: Wanting our partners to respond exactly how we envision can be unfair and lead to unnecessary tension.

- Choosing the Win: Sometimes, it’s better to take the yes and move on rather than pushing for the perfect response.

Key Messages:

- Understand and Accept: It’s important to recognize that people express themselves differently. Just because the yes isn’t enthusiastic doesn’t mean it’s not genuine.

- Avoid Unnecessary Conflict: Pressing for a specific type of yes can create more conflict and diminish the positive aspects of the agreement.

- Focus on the Positive: Embrace the yes you received and focus on the shared experience rather than the manner in which it was given.

Encouragement for Listeners:

Think about the times you’ve overanalyzed a simple yes. Could accepting it at face value have led to a better outcome? Choosing to accept and appreciate the yes can lead to more harmonious and fulfilling interactions.

19. Finding Rest: My Journey to Better Sleep10 Jul 202400:08:28

Welcome back to *Stethoscopes and Strollers*! In this episode, I'm opening up about my personal battle with sleep issues and the journey I took to find restful sleep again. As a physician and a mom, I've faced the ups and downs of sleep deprivation, and I want to share my story to help you navigate your own sleep challenges.

Episode Highlights:

- Stress and Sleep: How high-stress periods affected my sleep patterns, and the shift that happened after having my daughter.

- Unrestful Sleep: The constant chatter in my mind, the to-do lists, replaying arguments, and the anger that kept me awake.

- Trial and Error: My attempts to improve sleep with various medications like doxylamine, melatonin, and Benadryl, and the realization that these were only temporary fixes.

- Postpartum Anxiety: Exploring the possibility that my sleep issues were linked to postpartum anxiety and my decision to try Lexapro.

- Professional Help: The pivotal moment when my therapist advised me to seek proper evaluation for my sleep issues.

- Discovering Trazodone: My experience with Trazodone, which worked for a while but eventually stopped being effective.

- Natural Remedies: Trying meditation, bedtime yoga, and even gummies suggested by my husband, and why these also fell short.

- The Breakthrough: Finally seeking help from a sleep coach, Dr. Funke Afolabi Brown, and how her guidance in six sessions provided a lasting framework for better sleep.

Key Messages:

- Seek Help: Don't waste time trying to fix sleep issues on your own. Professional help can make a significant difference.

- It's Not Normal: If you're getting less than six hours of sleep regularly, it's time to talk to someone.

- Empower Yourself: Whether it's immediately postpartum or years later, there are solutions and people who can help you improve your sleep.

18. Breaking the Sleep Deprivation Myth: Strategies for Better Sleep in Early Motherhood10 Jul 202400:09:14

Welcome back to *Stethoscopes and Strollers*! In this episode, I’m tackling the widely accepted notion that poor sleep is an unavoidable part of early motherhood. Drawing on my experience as a newly minted Perinatal Mental Health Certified OBGYN, I'll explore the significant impact of sleep deprivation on maternal mental health, including its role as a risk factor for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders like postpartum depression, OCD, and psychosis.

I delve into societal expectations and what I like to call the "Struggle Olympics," where moms wear their sleep struggles as badges of honor. Why is seeking adequate sleep often stigmatized? Let’s flip that script and emphasize the importance of prioritizing sleep for both you and your child.

Episode Highlights:

- Sleep Deprivation and Mental Health: How lack of sleep can lead to severe perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

- Societal Expectations: The harmful cultural norms that expect mothers to endure sleep deprivation without seeking help.

- Support Systems: The importance of establishing a support system before the baby arrives, including partners, family, night nannies, and doulas.

- Practical Tips: Strategies to maximize sleep from the newborn stage, such as setting clear boundaries and considering professional help for sleep training.

- Personal Experience: I share my own journey with sleep issues and the measures I took to protect my sleep as a mother and physician.

Call to Action:

17. Spontaneous Dates and Intentional Choices: Keeping the Spark Alive03 Jul 202400:07:30

Hey doc! 🌟 Today, I’ve got a delightful and spontaneous date story to share with you. My husband and I had a fun, unexpected outing that reminded me of the importance of making intentional choices to maintain intimacy and connection, especially during the hectic years of raising young kids.

Episode Highlights:

1. Surprise Date Day:

   - Bad Boys Ride or Die released today! My husband planned to see it solo, but I couldn't let that happen. I invited myself along and found an 11 AM showtime that fit our schedules perfectly.

2. Adult Conversations Ahead:

   - Just a heads-up, we’re diving into some adult themes today. Make sure the kiddos are out of earshot.

3. A Quickie Before the Movie:

   - Feeling close and a little frisky, I suggested a quickie before we left for the theater. Despite being exhausted I felt good and wanted to seize the moment for intimacy.

4. Intentional Choices:

   - Reflecting on the morning, I realized that previous me wouldn’t have made these choices. It took several intentional decisions to make the day enjoyable and intimate.

5. Maintaining the Spark:

   - Little moments of closeness are hard to come by with young kids. We’ve found that prioritizing these moments keeps us from becoming mere roommates. It’s crucial to make these choices to foster connection and intimacy.

6. Choosing Happiness:

   - It's easy to focus on the negative, but today, I chose happiness and togetherness. Not every situation is worth shrugging off, but finding moments where you can choose joy over irritation can greatly enhance your relationship.

7. Encouragement for You:

   - Look for opportunities to make intentional choices that foster closeness and happiness. Small decisions can significantly impact your relationship's health, benefiting not only you and your partner but also your kids.

Thank you for tuning in! Join me next time on Stethoscopes and Strollers for more tips on balancing motherhood and maintaining a thriving relationship.
