Tapering10 Nov 202000:14:39

What is tapering?

Tapering is reducing the amount of training time on the days prior to your competition.  Tapering is not about reducing the intensity or effort that you or your horse puts into training but the actual duration that you work them for, this is key.  Tapering is a tried and tested method to improve performance at your competition and has been used successfully in human athletes over the past 30 years but isn't so widely known in the equestrian community.  In this Podcast, Dr David Marlin explains what Tapering is and how to use it in your horse's fitness and training plan to greatly improve your horse's performance!

Moving a Horse to a New Home by Dr David Marlin19 Oct 202000:13:35
Over the years I've come across many horse owners who bring a horse home and then find they are having problems with it in the first few days or even weeks, whether that be changes in temperament, illness or both.  Moving home is extremely stressful for some horses and can even lead to colic, tying up and respiratory problems to name just a few.  We cannot overestimate the stress of travelling and changing home for our horses, changing forage and feed, bedding material and so forth.

Dr David Marlin interviews Farrier Ben Benson at ACPAT27 Oct 202400:29:03

Dr David Marlin took the opportunity to catch up with his old friend and colleague, farrier Ben Benson, at the annual Acpat seminar at Leamington Spa in October 2024.

Ben Benson AWCF Farrier presented at the conference 'The Farrier's role in influencing equine posture and injury prevention'.

They discuss the role of the farrier and how they can work with other professionals to determine the best course of action for any horse - given their unique perspective. How can a horse owner/rider get all these experts working together.

Why is the farrier industry in decline, and what are the problems, causes and concerns for the industry? And what are the price differences between shoeing a horse in the UK and abroad? Farriers are being forced to shoe high numbers in the UK, and this is having a detrimental effect on their bodies, and they are struggling to make ends meet.

They even discuss barefoot and why this topic is so divisive, and really it should be about welfare and what is best for the horse at that point in their life given; breed, age, condition, care, sport and whether it actually benefits them or not!

You'll be able to watch the interview video here on Animalweb or listen to the podcast.

The Sympathetic Nervous System by Dr Gillian Tabor04 Sep 202400:12:58

What is the autonomic nervous system, and how does it affect our horses?

In this podcast Dr Gillian Tabor discusses the flight and fight, rest and digest elements of horse behaviour and poses the questions:

  • Is being in a high arousal state always a concern?
  • Can it be beneficial in rehab and training?

We have a lot to learn about motivation and ideas such as 'flow state' and how they can be applied to horses, but we must consider that much can be translated. What do you think?

Dr David Marlin on the latest round of Saddle Pad Testing! 08 Mar 202500:15:22

In this podcast, Dr David Marlin discusses the complexities of saddle pads, including their functions, testing methods, and how to choose the right one for your horse. She emphasises the importance of informed choices based on laboratory testing and user feedback, while also cautioning against manufacturers' claims without evidence. The conversation highlights the need for proper saddle fitting and the role of saddle pads in equine health and comfort.

Points covered:

  • There are many brands and models of saddle pads available.
  • Testing saddle pads under identical conditions allows for direct comparison.
  • Saddle pads serve multiple functions, including sweat wicking and improving saddle fit.
  • Laboratory testing can provide insights into a pad's mechanical properties.
  • Not all expensive pads perform better than reasonably priced options.
  • User feedback is essential for understanding long-term performance of saddle pads.
  • Saddle pads can affect saddle fit, which may not always be beneficial.
  • It's important to consult a qualified saddle fitter when choosing a pad.
  • Beware of marketing claims that lack scientific backing.
  • Testing methods include static and dynamic pressure tests.

Which saddle pads actually deliver on their claims? With prices ranging from £20 to over £200, it’s hard to know what really works and what’s just clever marketing. That’s why Animalweb has CUT THROUGH THE MISINFORMATION by putting them to the test under the same laboratory conditions, so you can see exactly how they compare!

Dr Gillian Tabor reviews TWO Rehabilitation Exercise Research Papers18 Aug 202400:20:47

Animalweb's Equine Physiotherapist Dr Gillian Tabor reviews two new research papers on rehabilitation exercises:

The first paper investigates the horse's trunk kinematics and limb movement when walking backwards and forwards.

  • Jobst, I.D., Zsoldos, R.R. and Licka, T.F., 2024. Trunk kinematics and limb movement of horses walking backwards and forwards in hand and lifting a single limb. The Veterinary Journal, p.106202. Links to the studies can be found on the Animalweb website.

The second paper evaluates the electromyography activity of a horse's hindlimb muscles during exercises.

  • Elósegui, M., Cediel, R., Goyaga-Elizalde, J. and Hernández-Fernández, T., 2024. Evaluation of the electromyography activity of hindlimb muscles during core exercises in horses. Journal of Equine Rehabilitation, p.100013. Links to the studies can be found on the Animalweb website.

Gillian then muses on what we can learn and use in our daily lives from these two new studies and whether we are using the correct exercises for the rehabilitation of our horses.

Dr David Marlin Interviews Charlotte Hodgetts - Cooling Horses Research11 Aug 202400:22:27

Dr David Marlin Interviews Charlotte Hodgetts of Myerscough College about her latest Research into Cooling Horses.

David chats with Charlotte about how her equine science career started and what led her to research cooling horses.

Charlotte's work and abstract can be found on the Animalweb website here.

To understand more, here is the Introduction:

Introduction: Strenuous exercise like British Eventing (BE) cross-country competition can increase equine core body temperatures to critical levels, particularly in hot/humid conditions without suitable acclimatisation (Marlin et al., 1996). Heat stroke is a welfare concern, particularly with increasing occurrences of UK heatwaves due to global warming (Kendon et al., 2021). Cooling practices have been investigated for international competition horses working maximally (Marlin et al., 2018), but not specifically the practices used in industry by riders at grassroots level. The aim was to investigate cooling practices used after cross-country phases at BE affiliated grassroots and international-level competition.

Motivation, energy and flow with Dr Gillian Tabor14 Jul 202400:19:00

🐴 Can Horses Experience "Flow" During Training? 🤔

Ever wondered if we could make rehab and training more enjoyable for our equine partners?

Research by Hintze & Yee (2022) asks: "Can we provide animals with the same access to a sense of enjoyment that we as humans value so much?"

🔑 Key Points:

  • Effective rehab/training requires intensity for adaptation
  • What if horses could be happy increasing effort?
  • Could horses experience a 'flow state' during work?

Dr Giliian Tabor has been diving into human psychological theories of motivation, particularly Self-determination theory by Ryan and Deci. It's fascinating to consider how these concepts might apply to our horses!

What are your thoughts? Can we make training more intrinsically rewarding for horses?

📚 Further reading:

Studs on Artificial Surfaces, Research Review - Dr Gillian Tabor01 Mar 202500:16:29

Research Review: The Effect of Screw-in Studs on Equine Hoof and Limb Kinematics on Artificial Surfaces

In this podcast, Dr Gillian Tabor reviews a study on the effects of screw-in studs on equine hoof and limb kinematics during cantering and jumping on artificial surfaces. The study aims to understand the benefits and risks associated with using studs, particularly in terms of injury prevention and performance enhancement. The findings indicate that while there were no significant differences in slip distance, certain kinematic parameters were affected, leading to discussions on the implications for equestrian practices.

Dr Gillian Tabor interviews Canine Physio Tom Day 12 May 202400:31:42

In this fasinating chat between two animal physiotherapists, Dr Gillian Tabor and Canine physio Tom Daly, discuss the many similarities and differences in treating horses and dogs.

Tom discusses his passion for helping dogs, the powers of water therapy for dogs

In a typical day, Tom would treat dogs that have:

  • Joint issues - such as arthritis, hip or elbow displacer
  • Cruciate issues in need of support
  • Neurological - inc discs and back issues

With osteoporosis - how can a physio help make a dog more comfortable in their day-to-day lives? Tom explains some of the signs and behaviours to look for which may indicate that your dog is suffering from painful joints.

How does a cruciate issue affect your dog? It is a very common issue that Tom helps many dogs with; these can be caused by chasing squirrels and damage caused by chasing fastballs! Do you use a chuck-it-ball throw?! You may reconsider after listening to the damage they can cause to your dog's cruciate ligaments!

Water treadmills vs treadmills - why are they so useful and helpful in recuperating dogs? And when would a physio use them?

What can you do to help your dog's joints and body? There are some very simple and easy suggestions!

Recognising pain in the ridden horse with Sue Palmer25 Nov 202300:30:33

Recognising pain in the ridden horse – use of the ridden horse pain ethogram (RHpE) with Sue Palmer (interviewed by Dr Gillian Tabor)

“All too often, pain in ridden horses is labelled as ‘bad’ behaviour. The apparently ‘sound’ horse is ‘naughty’, ‘lazy’, ‘difficult’, ‘explosive’, ‘spooky’, ‘nappy’, and more. These labels are wrong. Pain impacts all aspects of a horse’s performance, including its partnership with the rider, and its potential to progress. It does not always create lameness. Relieving pain can lead to improved performance, a deeper partnership, and greater potential.”

Sue and Gillian discuss the Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE), developed by Dr Sue Dyson and colleagues. The RHpE is a checklist of 24 behaviours to check for musculoskeletal pain in the ridden horse. Horses can only demonstrate pain through their behaviour and performance. Only through first recognising pain can we then address it through accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Sue Palmer and Dr Sue Dyson have recently published ‘Harmonious Horsemanship: Use of the Ridden Horse Ethogram to Optimise Potential, Partnership and Performance’.

Sue Palmer has worked in the equestrian industry for over 25 years, is an ACPAT and RAMP registered Chartered Physiotherapist, and based in Staffordshire, UK

The new study has just gone live and is looking for participants!

Why study this and what benefits could it bring to our own relationships with our horses?

Have you ever wondered:

  • Why you bond with some horses and not others?
  • Why you feel comfortable with some horses quicker than others?
  • What your horse may be feeling when they move to a new yard or are sold?
  • What can we learn from how our horses interact with us?

ALSO

  • Do horses experience grief and loss?
  • How can a horse express grief?

Dr David Marlin - Vitamin E, could your horse be deficient?28 Oct 202300:12:54

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient for horses, much like it is for humans and other animals. Vitamin E cannot be made and must be obtained from the diet. It plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including immune system support, muscle function, and the elimination of free radicals that can damage cells and tissue. Horses that have access to fresh, green pasture typically get an adequate amount of Vitamin E from their diet. However, those that are kept in stables/stalls or fed on a diet consisting mainly of hay might require supplementation.

Dr David Marlin explains the extensive importance of Vitamin E, with a discussion around:

  • How much does a horse need?
  • What are the different types of Vitamin E?
  • What does it do for the horse?
  • The importance of selenium
  • Concerns around overdose of selenium and Vitamin E
  • What supplements are available?
  • How much should you supplement your horse (according to their circumstances)?

To see a full article on the subject, the supplement per horse table and learn more about the different supplements available head over to the website.

Interview with Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock - Making eventing safer for our horses27 Oct 202300:38:45

Helen from the Dr David Marlin team interviews Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock - Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Central Lancashire and researcher into THREE of eventings key horse safety studies.

With colleagues, Heather has conducted three significant studies into Horse falls at events. Heather’s 2023 study on horse falls in British Eventing competition was the largest scientific study ever published, and her previous research with FEI data has led to significant safety discussions about fence types and their order during a cross-country course and a closer subjective look at what constitutes a risk factor.

Equestrian eventing is a dangerous Olympic sport, with 16 rider and 69 horse fatalities at competition in the last 10 years. Despite this, there is limited research that aims to improve safety within the sport.

To find out more about Heather and the research she has been involved with, head over to the website and learn more.

Plus, Heather will be LIVE on the Dr David Marlin platform on Thursday, 2nd November, to discuss her research in more depth with a closer look at the numbers and what we can learn from the findings.

Dr Gillian Tabor learns more about the Thoroughbred Census08 Oct 202300:31:27

In this podcast Dr Gillian Tabor talks about the Thoroughbred Census and speaks to Helena Flynn – Programme Director and Stephen Wensley – Project Lead for Welfare Data, both from the Horse Welfare Board.

This is an independently-chaired group and includes representatives from British Horseracing Authority, racecourses and horsemen. In 2020, they published a five-year strategy, ‘A live well lived’, with focuses on aspects such as safety and wellbeing, as well as traceability for horses bred for the sport.

The Horse Welfare Board launched the first-ever thoroughbred census in Great Britain in collaboration with research experts at Hartpury University in June 2023. All owners of former racehorses are being asked to submit a completed census between 28 June – 31 December 2023. The census will help build an improved thoroughbred data bank about former racehorses and the lives they go on to lead

Horse and rider behaviour, injury and performance08 Feb 202500:22:09

In this podcast, Dr David Marlin discusses the importance of understanding horse and rider behaviour to reduce the risk of injury and improve performance. David emphasises the need to move away from labelling horses as 'naughty' and instead focus on the underlying reasons for their behaviour, such as pain, confusion, and anxiety. The conversation explores how horses perceive their environment, including their acute hearing abilities, and how this can affect their reactions. David highlights the significance of recognizing conflict behaviours and their potential consequences for both horse and rider, advocating for a more empathetic and informed approach to equestrianism.

Points covered:

  • Understanding horse behaviour can reduce the risk of injury.
  • Pain and anxiety are common triggers for unwanted behaviours.
  • Horses have a different hearing range than humans.
  • Recognizing a horse's mood can improve training outcomes.
  • Training should focus on clear communication with the horse.
  • Horses may react to stimuli that riders cannot perceive.
  • The term 'naughty' is misleading in equestrian contexts.
  • Improving horse-rider communication enhances performance.
