On today's episode, Jacob runs through a list of whitetail season chores that you may want to take care of in prep for the season as whitetail seasons begin to open across the country this month and next. As you know, when the season opens, you don't want to dedicate any amount of time to activities that could or should have been taken care of during the off season...so now is your chance to take note and get these items done before it's too late. For example, last minute property access and networking, thanking current private access owners, shooting your broadheads, setting up cams on potential feed trees, and other potential chores. Pennsylvania Woodsman - Timing the Kill: Being Strategic with Your Time

mercredi 4 septembre 2024Duration 55:48

In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by his buddy Cole Seitzinger, who talks about balancing family life with hunting and his transition to hunting with a saddle. The balancing act requires Cole to be specific with his time to allow success; the saddle helps with his time efficiency. The conversation begins with the pros and cons of saddle hunting and the impact of content creation on the hunting experience. From here, Cole breaks down the hunt for his 2023 PA buck. Cole was able to harvest this buck on the first sit of the year at this property. He had not hunted it for 3 seasons, in fact the previous sit he also arrowed his largest PA buck to date. Cole shares the ins and outs of learning the timing of the properties he hunts, and how he had to make an adjustment after missing the best time at another property. This is part one of two, tune in next week when Cole breaks down his trip to Illinois where he arrowed a bruiser! Hound Dog Network - Gone To The Dogs: Coon Hunting Legend Glen Young

lundi 2 septembre 2024Duration 01:08:09

Glen Young is 89 years old. He has hunted with James Merchant, Joe House, John Monroe, Frank Giddings, Harold Trusty, Buddy Gilbert, Tam Young, and the list goes on, of famous hunters past and present. Glen is nothing if not frank in the accounts of hunters and hunts and is a no-nonsense storyteller that calls them as he sees them. Steve recently spent an hour with Glen, with the promise of much more to come, to discuss his upbringing in rural Arkansas, his hunts with Deep River Mike, Merchant’s Banjo II (whom he remembers as the best competition dog of his experience) and a long list of hounds coonhound historians will recall.  Despite his age, his mind is still as sharp as an Old Timer coon skinner and his vast knowledge of the coon hunting game will inform and entertain lovers of the tree dog as no other.  You truly won't want to miss this one! N.F.C. - Taking a Holistic Approach to Habitat Improvement

vendredi 2 août 2024Duration 01:20:23

In this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, host Dan Johnson interviews Jon Teater from Whitetail Landscapes about habitat management for hunting properties. They discuss the importance of understanding the complex environment that deer live in and how it affects their behavior. Teater explains that the most common goal for clients is to shoot bigger quality deer, but this goal can be abstract and requires a deep understanding of the deer composition and the specific makeup of a high-quality deer. They also discuss the role of risk and pressure in deer behavior and how to create a habitat that reduces risk and holds deer on the property. Teater emphasizes the importance of good habitat and cover, as well as the balance between food availability and cover value. He also explains how to assess the carrying capacity of a property by measuring the amount of biomass consumed by deer. Jon and Dan discuss the importance of habitat improvement and deer management. They cover topics such as diverse diets for deer, equating the number of deer to be removed from a property, and the impact of deer behavior on habitat management. They also discuss the role of aesthetics in deer management and the need for a holistic approach to habitat improvement. Jon emphasizes the importance of pushing oneself to experience difficulty and learn from different environments. He also provides insights on how to choose a habitat consultant and the key factors to consider. Takeaways: Understanding the complex environment that deer live in is crucial for effective habitat management on hunting properties. The most common goal for clients is to shoot bigger quality deer, but this goal requires a deep understanding of the specific makeup of a high-quality deer. Creating a habitat that reduces risk and holds deer on the property is key to successful hunting. Balancing food availability and cover value is important for attracting and holding deer on a property. Assessing the carrying capacity of a property can be done by measuring the amount of biomass consumed by deer. Diverse diets for deer and understanding the volume of edible biomass are important factors in habitat improvement. Equating the number of deer to be removed from a property requires considering recruitment, residential and non-residential deer, and the availability of food. Understanding deer behavior and individual preferences can help in making management decisions. Aesthetics and creating a good environment for deer are important aspects of habitat management. Pushing oneself to experience difficulty and learn from different environments can lead to better habitat management practices. When choosing a habitat consultant, consider their experience in your region, their ability to provide ongoing support, and their approach to habitat management. Consultants should consider the specific goals and challenges of the property and provide tailored recommendations. August and September are good times to consult for hunting season preparation and to assess the status of the environment. Habitat improvement requires a holistic approach and attention to detail. mercredi 27 septembre 2023Duration 01:12:47

Hey everyone, welcome to episode 192 of the Antler Up Podcast! On this week's episode I was joined by PA native Steve Sherk Jr. to kick off the PA state wide opener week! This is the second year in a row that Steve has kicked off the season for us. If you are like me, when Steve speaks you have to listen! He is one of the best out there when it comes to providing helpful information and has year after year success in the PA woods.  This was a really fun episode to record because we discussed some plans for this upcoming season, Steve’s ability to adapt to hunting pressure, potential outlook for the 2023 season, timing your hunts and a whole lot more! We begin this episode by hearing Steve share what he is doing to finalize things for this upcoming season with more prep work with cameras. Steve discusses what hunting means to him and the impact it has made on his life. Following this up Steve has been able to adapt to the hunting pressure. With more great information out there Steve has changed some of his strategies to better his odds on a PA mature buck. With the low kill numbers, mild winter Steve believes in his area this upcoming year can be a good one. We dive into food options, his 3 C’s and his top 3 rules when it comes to hunting those big ole cautious bucks! I greatly appreciate Steve for all that he has done and is doing for the hunting community and can’t wait to see his success and get a chance to catch up with him again! Be sure to check out his Mountain Buck University YouTube channel and his Sherk’s Guide Service! Enjoy this fun episode and see you next week!  Thanks again for all the support and best of luck out there and Antler Up!
