Owning your own story with Lesley Woods

Episode 215

mardi 6 décembre 2022Duration 17:40

Owning your own story.

With a background in Public Relations, Lesley Woods has 20 years’ experience of curating and creating compelling stories.  Her career has taken her around the world, working with international partners to shine a light on the work of her military colleagues, from celebrating Christmas in Kandahar to delivering humanitarian aid to the Central African Republic.

As a current serving senior Royal Air Force Reserve Media Officer, she shares unique perspectives gained from her operational experience.  Her mission is to get you out of the (communication) trenches and into new territory, to get you thinking differently about how you can emotionally engage your audiences.

In her civilian ‘day job’ role she leads campaigns in the UK Ministry of Defence Communications Directorate, a team that aims to ‘give a voice to the men and women who serve so that their stories can be heard’.

To help the UK Armed Forces reach new audiences she has led collaborations with films, TV series and documentaries, from influencer events with Disney to a PR partnership with the producers of James Bond.  She once lost half an eyebrow evacuating a TV documentary crew from a burning toilet tent in Afghanistan....whilst wearing ballistic pants.

Lesley shares the importance of using your OWN story along with tips on the concept of bullet-proof storytelling.  For those speakers that are interviewed, Lesley has lots of advice from her media training background.   And if you ever fancied climbing a tree for Tom Cruise, well Lesley can tell you how.

Better Connection Through Visual Technology with Jon Hammond

Episode 125

mardi 20 octobre 2020Duration 21:49

My guest this week specialises in helping clients to harness the power of the virtual platform to grow their credibility, visibility and reputation.

Using his years of experience in broadcasting his mission is to encourage leaders to improve their credibility by throwing away many of their traditional communication methods and embrace this opportunity with visual technology to raise engagement across their organisations.

He says ‘It’s totally not complicated to motivate teams to make the new world of Zoom, Skype and Teams really interesting and effective. All it takes is some simple skills, proven techniques, and insider tips, which has impact and influence on an audience even though they are not in the same room."

My special guest today is the professional broadcaster, Jon Hammond.

Bio

Reputations, both organisational and personal are precious commodities, especially in times of pressure and stress. Jon Hammond has been preserving, enhancing and protecting the reputations of major organisations and leaders for over 30 years.

As a speaker he is a recognised specialist in impactful communication, whether it is face to face or, more recently the demand has been to show companies how to be most effective virtually.

As an Executive Coach he advises organisations on communication strategy and supports leaders to deliver really impactful messages.

As a (Live or Virtual) Conference or Event Host, Jon puts his many years of experience and professionalism into creating and event for you to be justifiably proud of.

More importantly, Jon is fun to work with!

He will captivate your team with stories from a lifetime of influencing audiences, both at conferences and events (his maximum live audience at present is 50,000 people!) or on Radio and TV, ensuring that whilst enjoyable, the key relevant messages have an impact and an outcome for your people.

As a ‘shy person in a noisy body’ Jon has had a somewhat unusual career.

His childhood ambition was to be an auctioneer, so he trained as a surveyor, however a passion and energy for travel and discovering new things led him to become a DJ across Europe. It was then a natural progression to move into broadcasting, initially, pioneering in commercial music radio and then for sixteen years with BBC Radio and Television.

During this time, Jon hosted a variety of programmes from hard news to light entertainment and interviewed a vast range of guests from Prime Ministers to Corporate Heads and International Celebrities to Sporting Stars. This experience has made him an in-demand host for ensuring conferences (live or virtual) are on time, have momentum and interest, and more importantly have a resilient outcome.

Success though has its downside and whilst he and his family still live in Yorkshire, England, until recently Jon spent much of his time travelling. Most of the time now is spent in his professional studio, speaking, hosting, and coaching teams around the world.

With a firm belief in ‘putting back’ he is a Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire – England, Freeman of the UK Guild of Entrepreneurs, Vice-President of Northern Ballet Theatre, a Governor of York St John University, and uses his compering and auctioneering skills to raise large amounts for several charities.

How to Transform Conflict into Collaboration with Jane Gunn

Episode 124

mardi 13 octobre 2020Duration 15:46

My guest this week is an expert in the field of conflict resolution, a trained mediator and facilitator.  She is the Chair of the Board of Management of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is a former director and board member of the Civil Mediation Council of England and Wales.

She helps organisations in times of change, challenge and crisis to stay ahead of the curve in transforming conflict into collaboration saving the cost and time of formal disputes or litigation and damaged relationships and reputation.

Author of 2 popular books “How To Beat Bedlam In The Boardroom And Boredom In The Bedroom” and “The Authority Guide To Conflict Resolution”, she has spoken at the United Nations, The White House and the European Commission.

Please give a warm welcome to my guest this week, Corporate Peacemaker Jane Gunn.

Bio

Jane Gunn is an expert in the field of conflict resolution, a trained mediator and facilitator, known to her clients as “The Barefoot Mediator”. She is the Chair of the Board of Management of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and is a former director and board member of the Civil Mediation Council of England and Wales (CMC).

Author of 2 popular books “How To Beat Bedlam In The Boardroom And Boredom In The Bedroom” and “The Authority Guide To Conflict Resolution”, she has spoken at the United Nations, The White House and the European Commission.

As the world in which we live becomes increasingly focused on the global unrest created by the rise of a pandemic virus, racial inequality, terrorism, climate change, financial instability and more, people everywhere are dealing with both the external and internal sense of conflict, constant fear and uncertainty this is creating, Jane is asking:

  • What can we, as individuals, do to understand and transform this conflict?
  • Are we being woken up to a deeper meaning and message?
  • How do we find harmony and balance in a crazy world?

Jane Gunn helps people in all walks of life to become ReSolutionaries. Teaching them the basic skills of mediation, she enables people to deal with difference and diversity in ways that are non-adversarial, and solution focused.

Her mission is to create a tribe of barefoot mediators equipped to lead and inspire others in times of change, challenge and crisis. She has a powerful message supported by practical tools and techniques that applies to organizations of all sizes across all sectors.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for businesses right now. Critical decisions must be made each day as to how businesses are going to survive and thrive in the weeks and months ahead. And yet the ability for many leaders and managers to think and decide clearly may be challenged by;

  • Disagreements with colleagues
  • Tensions with family members
  • Internal conflict created by the times we are living in

Jane has worked with organisations large and small including Cable & Wireless, The NHS, BAA, Bacardi- Martini, McLaren Racing, The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, ACCA and many more

Jane’s skill is in getting people

  • Talking about what matters most – both to them and to their organisation
  • Motivated, energised and committed to what needs to happen next

Her approach is both interactive and fun.

My guest this week has been called a world authority on remote teams.  She is an expert in Virtual and Hybrid Leadership and is the author of the best-selling book ‘Virtual Leadership: Practical Strategies for Getting the Best Out of Virtual Work and Virtual Teams’.

Her experience of virtual and hybrid teams began when 9/11 forced her to run a major programme virtually. My guest this week literally wrote the book on virtual, please welcome Doctor Penny Pullan.

Bio

Dr Penny Pullan is a thought leader in the field of virtual leadership, specialising in complex change projects involving virtual teams. She is a director of Making Projects Work.

She works with people in multinational organisations who are grappling with tricky projects: uncertain, with ambiguous requirements, stakeholders who need to be engaged and virtual teams dispersed around the world. When they work with Penny, clients notice that communication, collaboration, clarity, commitment, connection and confidence grow, and change doesn't seem quite as tricky as before!

Penny is the author of several books including 'Virtual Leadership: Practical Strategies for Getting the Best out of Virtual Work and Virtual Teams' (Kogan Page, 2016).

She's bemused that her formerly niche topic of virtual leadership is suddenly something which makes sense to everyone, when people used to scratch their heads and wonder what on earth it was that she did!

He is known for his energy, humour and passion.

Growing up in the countryside, he discovered his love for nature and the environment early in life. In 2017, he moved to a small decommissioned farm, turning it into the world’s first certified Carbon Neutral honey farm, home to the native British honeybee.

He is a regular on television and radio, including his own show for ITV1. He works with businesses worldwide as a Behaviour Insight Advisor and has carved a reputation for delivering keynote presentations and workshops at conferences for some of the world’s most recognisable brands.

Please welcome Jez Rose.

Bio

Jez Rose is a broadcaster, honeybee farmer, award-winning writer and keynote speaker, known for his energy, humour and passion.

Growing up in the countryside, Jez Rose discovered his passion for nature and the environment early in life.

In 2017, he moved to a small decommissioned farm on the Cambridgeshire/Lincolnshire border, turning it into a multi-award-winning, organic farm – and the world’s first certified Carbon Neutral honey farm, home to the native British honeybee.

It might be the moustache that you recognise but Jez is a regular on television and radio, including his own show for ITV1; guest presenting on QVC and when not in the studio with ITV’s James Martin’s Saturday Morning, can be seen traveling the country with BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen. He has been the public ambassador for national campaigns for the likes of LateRooms.com; Honest Organic and The Happy Egg Company.

Jez spent ten years working with businesses worldwide as a Behaviour Insight Advisor, carving a formidable reputation delivering keynote presentations and workshops at conferences for some of the world’s most recognisable brands. He has been invited to speak at the world-renowned TEDx conferences in both the UK and USA, which can be viewed online.

An award-winning writer, his books include Flip the Switch and two books written for children: Zooster McFlooster & the Very Big Sneeze and The Sock Thief. His articles and features have appeared in titles as diverse as The Daily Telegraph, CNN, Liz Earle Wellbeing and BBC Countryfile magazines.

A unique presenter and keynote speaker with the rare ability to genuinely inspire audiences, he’s been invited to speak in more than 14 countries and at TEDx events in both the UK and USA.

His message is a simple yet powerful one: ever since humans stepped foot onto soil, nature had important lessons for us, but for centuries we’ve ignored them. It’s resulted in disengaged leaders and workforces; cultures without passion – and an environment ignored. The overwhelmingly positive, scientifically evidenced impact of nature on human health, wellbeing and behaviour will surprise you; how simply it changes human behaviour will astonish.

Gavin has given over 2,000 paid talks to over 250,000 delegates, spoken all over the world and has appeared on US TV networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox on the Brian Tracy TV Show. He have judged the British Excellence in Sales and Marketing Awards (BESMA), keynoted three times at the prestigious National Sales Conference, is a TEDx speaker and a Fellow of the ISM.
