Sober Ski Trips Are Real: Soberski Founder Ben Coombes on Skiing the French Alps Without the Après07 Oct 202600:41:45

Some people look at a mountain and see a party. Ben Coombes used to be one of them: magnums of rosé at lunch, shots on the chairlift, and more near misses than he can count. Then he tried something nobody in a ski resort does. He did a sober season.

Now Ben runs Soberski, alcohol-free chalet weeks in Méribel in the French Alps, and he’s our newest Sober Curator contributor. Alysse and Tamar (a snowboarder, it turns out) talk with him about what happens when you keep the mountain and lose the après.

In this episode:

  • Ski, work, or drink: pick two. Ben’s seasons driving guests for a luxury chalet company

  • The sober season that became an Instagram page, then a business

  • The first booking came from New Jersey, and Ben thought it was a scam

  • Never skied? Ben’s guest who went from zero to flying around the mountain in about six hours of lessons

  • Private chefs, cold plunges, daily yoga, and evening workshops

  • The January 22 to 29, 2027 week in Méribel, and who it’s for (sober, sober curious, or just done with hangovers on holiday)

  • Ben’s pick for your queue: “The Gentlemen” on Netflix

  • Why Ben didn’t build a support group on a mountain. He built a room.

Gray Area Drinking, Wine Mom Culture, and Why Sober Is the New Trench Coat (with Ruby Williams + Susan Larkin of Sober & Lit)30 Sep 202600:54:43

Sober is having a moment. NA beer is outselling the real thing in some markets, Dry January is an industry, and everyone is saying "gray area drinking" like it's new slang. So we brought in two people who've been in this conversation from opposite ends: Ruby Williams spent 20 years in the wine industry. Susan Larkin spent 20 years at Yale School of Medicine. They met as This Naked Mind coaches, became meditation partners, and now host the Sober & Lit podcast, 140 episodes deep.

Same landing spot, two totally different rooms. Alysse and Tamar wanted to know what the collision looked like.

In this episode:

  • RAIN (recognize, allow, investigate, nurture), and why the same practice works whether you invite God or the universe

  • Why they renamed the show to reclaim the word "sober"

  • How mommy wine culture normalized a bottle a night, from play-date teacups to swim-meet water bottles

  • Reverse purse wine: the NA bottles Susan brings to parties (Oddbird, Tomorrow Cellars, Jøyus, H2o), and what happened when Tamar poured hers in a tumbler

  • "If you go to the barber, you're gonna get a haircut," and why NA wine works for some people and not others

  • Alysse's Mad Men martini dining room, Ruby's stacks of "rosé all day" shirts, and the dad who replaced a wine club with National Geographic

  • The nurse at the cardiologist who said "if I miss, I owe you a drink"

  • Normal drinkers don't justify: Tamar's one-line test

TOMONOTOMO: The Sober Bartender Who Moved to Oaxaca and Built a Copper Still23 Sep 202600:50:54

A Toronto mixologist spends years building other people’s nights out. COVID moves her cocktail classes onto Zoom, the kits sell, and she has never been less happy. So she books a one-way ticket to Mexico.

Amanda Chen went from Tulum to a 10-day silent meditation retreat on the Oaxacan coast, walked out with no desire to drink, white-knuckled it for two years, and then found her people on a stranger’s patio at her first meeting. Then she did the thing nobody does: she stayed in the world of drinks and built TOMONOTOMO, a non-alcoholic agave spirit distilled by hand on a copper still in Oaxaca City, with real Tobalá agave and no shortcuts. Alysse met her at the Sans Bar Academy Awards in Austin, where they both took home trophies.

In this episode:

  • The one-way ticket, Tulum’s hedonism, and why she left at the top of her game

  • Ten days of silence in Mazunte and the backpack she wasn’t ready to drop off the cliff

  • Two years of avoiding every room with mezcal in it, which in Oaxaca is every room

  • The first meeting: an emailed address, a doorbell, and a woman who described herself as “batshit sober”

  • Why “do you want a drink?” used to feel like an attack, and the fiancée who called it

  • Copper stills, palenques, and the day mezcaleros started asking to live like her

  • What “tomo” and “no tomo” mean, and the Pride label with about 10 bottles left

  • Carrie Bradshaw, cosmos, and why “Sex and the City” did not age well

  • Watching “Ted Lasso” from midnight to 5 a.m. while the still does its work

Sober Shots:

“That’s not a pivot, friends. That is a plot twist, and I love a plot twist.” (Alysse Bryson)

“I’m ready to drop the ball, I’m not ready to drop the bag.” (Amanda Chen)

Presently Bracelets: The Sisters With OCD Who Made Therapy Wearable16 Sep 202600:51:16

You know the exact thing that would help. The phrase, the reframe, the tool your therapist gave you that one time. And in the moment your brain gets loud, it goes blank.

Emily and Lindsay Stetzer are sisters. They both live with OCD and anxiety, and during COVID, in matching sweatsuits, they built a company called Presently that puts the reminders from therapy on your wrist, your keys, and your bathroom mirror. Alysse and Amy Liz Harrison met them at OCDCon in Seattle, bought one of everything, and brought them on to talk about why "good vibes only" is the enemy, why everyone has these thoughts, and what it is like to run a business with your sister when one of you has the 'tude.

In this episode:

- The OCDCon origin story: stickers, fidget spinners, and then a disco light at the end of the tunnel

- Lindsay on lining up shoes and light switches, and Emily on the anxious kid who confessed to things that didn't need confessing

- Why OCD is not about cleanliness, and why every single person has had these thoughts

- Alysse's green-light rule, Amy's 20 lightsabers, and the "border hoarders" theory

- The "Good vibes only" sign over Emily's bed, and why those mantras hand OCD exactly what it wants

- The six phrases, whiteboarded: passing clouds, embrace uncertainty, brave the uncomfortable

- Feelings are like gas (clouds are a nicer way to say it)

- The iPad quiz, why Presently is the name, and the invisible brother

- What we're watching: "Ted Lasso" season four, Hilary Duff, "Silo," and why a scary show is good exposure therapy

The Mindful Binge: "Running Point," "Your Friends & Neighbors," and "Imperfect Women," Scored Through a Sober Lens09 Sep 202600:39:30

Three shows, three different flavors of "a sober person definitely wrote this" or "definitely did not." A basketball dynasty imploding over fake sobriety. Two women in very good coats who may or may not have killed their best friend. A suburban thief with a cocaine problem next door.

Alysse's TV ride or dies are here: Lane Kennedy, Patti Clark (making us global from Portugal), and co-host Tamar Routly. Spoilers for everything, on purpose. Each show gets scored on The Sobees, fulls and halves only, and one panelist tries to file a 4.75 and is denied.

In this episode:

  • "Running Point" season two: Cam says "I'm sober now," nobody believes him, and the urine swap ("Anyone ever bought fake urine? Just me?")

  • Why you can't buy sobriety, no matter how expensive the rehab

  • Chet Hanks, sober on screen and IRL, and the love-addicted couple that deserves a spin-off

  • "Your Friends & Neighbors" season two: Owen Ashe, the loud music, and the scene of all scenes (no spoilers here, plenty on mic)

  • Perimenopause rage, the neighbor's dog, and Ali as the family's designated screw-up

  • "Imperfect Women": the top-shelf alcoholic, the codependent nobody could stand, and why a three is a feeling

  • Alysse vs. Elisabeth Moss, and the Rotten Tomatoes score that backs Lane up

  • The strike, the attorneys, and "I'm gonna get Claude to reach out to you"

Sober Shots:

"You can't buy sobriety. Doesn't matter how much money you have. You could maybe buy a pee test, but you can't buy sobriety." (Alysse Bryson)

"A low score doesn't necessarily mean don't watch it. It's just our feelings about it, and a three feeling is a feeling." (Alysse Bryson)

The Sobees, panel average: "Running Point" S2: 3.5. "Your Friends & Neighbors" S2: 4.5. "Imperfect Women": 3.5.

The Hazards of Podcasting Sober: When Your Mom Hears It Before You Tell Her02 Sep 202600:32:38

You hit publish, and right in the pit of your stomach it lands: someone you have never told is about to hear it anyway. In this house, that feeling has a name. We call it Wednesday.

This week Alysse and Tamar take on the hazards of podcasting sober. Sober podcasters do not get the blackout excuse, and "radical honesty" was never supposed to mean unfiltered. Alysse tells the story of the episode her mom should have heard from her first, Tamar tells the story of what her parents said the morning after they read her book, and both of them admit the stories that land at a sober meeting do not always land on a first date. Then it gets practical: how to pitch a podcast without embarrassing yourself, the mic that survived Goldilocks and the three mics, why real beats AI in 2026, and the single best hazard-reducer any host can have. A co-host.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • "We call it Wednesday": the cold-open feeling every sober podcaster knows

  • The story Alysse's mom heard on a podcast instead of from her daughter

  • Tamar's parents read her book. Both called the next morning.

  • Know your audience: the dating stories that killed every second date

  • How to pitch a podcast (and the seven "top 50" sober podcasts that are quietly dead)

  • Tech talk: mics, video, Riverside, Descript, and the AI image a celebrity asked Alysse to take down

  • Get a co-host, wear a costume, keep it fun

  • Backstage with The Sober Curator, plus The Sober Curator Mixtape: seven mini zines in a cassette case, mailed monthly

SOBER SHOTS:

"Because we're sober, we can't blame being blacked out on saying something stupid. We just have to own that we said something stupid." (Alysse)

"You're allowed to say the true thing before you've rehearsed it into something safe." (Alysse)

Recovery Friendly Workplace: Should You Tell Your Boss You're Sober? (And What Happens If Your Job Actually Gets It)26 Aug 202600:40:43

You spend at least 40 hours a week at work. For a lot of people in recovery, that's 40 hours of navigating a culture that doesn't know you exist, or worse, doesn't care.

Eliza Zarka is changing that. She runs the National Recovery Friendly Workplace Institute, which certifies employers as recovery friendly, and she took an idea that started at a New Hampshire ski resort and turned it into a national movement with bipartisan federal backing. Alysse and Sober Curator contributor Sarah, a fractional HR consultant in long-term recovery, get into what it actually takes to make a job safe to be sober in.

In this episode:

  • Why "there are already people in recovery that are working for you" is the sentence that changes an employer's mind

  • The four pillars of Recovery Friendly Workplace certification: culture, hiring, benefits, and education

  • How to bring this to your HR department without disclosing your own recovery

  • Alysse on 2006 versus 2026: why she hid it for years, and the 2016 job interview where she said it out loud on purpose

  • The company that made the first hour of its holiday party completely alcohol-free, with leadership required to be there

  • Why the holiday gift bottle of wine tells you the company knows nothing about you

  • Coffee tastings, tea tastings, dirty soda tastings: team building that isn't a wine flight

  • Pop culture close: "The Office," "Parks and Rec," and the true crime documentary habit that may be a problem

Sober Shots:

"There are already people in recovery that are working for you." (Eliza Zarka)

"When you're in an interview, you're interviewing the company just as much as they're interviewing you." (Alysse Bryson)

Quit Lit 2026: Lena Dunham, Anthony Hopkins + Hayden Panettiere, Reviewed by People Who Lived It19 Aug 202600:41:59

A note before you listen: we recorded this episode in late July, several weeks before Hayden Panettiere died on August 16 at the age of 36. We are publishing it as recorded rather than editing her out. Her cause of death has not been released and we are not speculating. We recorded a separate conversation about her death, and it is the episode right before this one. If this is landing hard for you: 988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call or text. SAMHSA's National Helpline is 1-800-662-4357, free and confidential, 24/7.

Three memoirs. Three completely different humans. One question: what does it cost to numb yourself when the whole world is watching?

Alysse and Tamar pull three of The Sober Curator's most avid readers into a panel on the year's biggest quit lit: “Famesick” by Lena Dunham, “We Did OK, Kid” by Anthony Hopkins, and “This Is Me: A Reckoning” by Hayden Panettiere. Nobody read all three. Everybody has opinions. Sobee scores at the end, and house rules say you cannot score a book you didn't read.

In this episode:

- Amy Liz Harrison's book hack from her 10th grade English teacher days: first paragraph, last paragraph, skim the middle, finish in an hour

- Why The Sober Curator was almost called The Sober Critic, and the epiphany that killed the name

- “Famesick”: medical trauma, opioids, and a memoir that flatly refuses to be a before-and-after

- “We Did OK, Kid”: the blackout drive Anthony Hopkins had to be told about afterward

- Patti Clark and Alysse on what actually stops you, and it isn't what you'd do to yourself

- “This Is Me: A Reckoning” Hayden Panettiere on acting at 11 months old, a mother who was also the manager, and postpartum depression nobody names out loud

- The Sobee score lightning round, plus a quarter-point scoring controversy

Sober Shots:

"Quit lit used to mean one shelf on a bookstore nobody browsed on purpose." (Alysse)

"There are books that I just wanna eat like a really juicy nectarine and just bite into it and just get sticky." (Patti)

Hayden Panettiere, Brad Pitt + How We Talk About Recovery | The Sober Curator BONUS18 Aug 202600:42:43

Hayden Panettiere died on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. Her cause of death has not been released. Police have said their preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play, and the coroner's office says the cause and manner remain pending further testing. We are not going to speculate past that.

In the same seven-day cycle, and completely separately, Brad Pitt told Esquire he is drinking again after seven years sober.

Two different stories. One conversation this community keeps getting wrong.

Alysse, Tamar and Amy Liz got on the phone within 24 hours and recorded this, because the Quit Lit book club episode dropping right behind it contains their review of Hayden's memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, recorded in July, scored the highest of the three books. This is not an obituary and it is not a hot take. It is three women with combined 49 years of lived experience and a lot of hard-won opinions between them, talking about who gets to grade somebody else's recovery.

In this episode:

- What we actually know, what we don't, and why the difference matters

- Why “he relapsed” is not our word to use when he didn't use it himself

- Taking inventory of other people's programs, and the person 30 days in who is listening

- Amy Liz on postpartum depression, and the comparison trap that talks you out of your own experience

- Mental health systems that make you fail two or three times before they'll help you

- Alysse falls off a ladder and turns it into the best analogy in the episode

- The disco ball

Sober Shots:

“That's it. That's all we know. Everything else would be speculation, and we're just not going to go there.” (Alysse)

“The bottom line is we don't care how you got here, but we do care that you are here.” (Alysse)

If this one is landing hard for you, that is a normal reaction and you are not being dramatic. 988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, call or text, 24/7. Ella Collier on Sobriety, Stardom & The Pop-Star Fantasy—Unfiltered 07 Jan 202600:57:26

This week on The Sober Curator, Alysse sits down with rising pop powerhouse Ella Collier—singer, songwriter, producer, and sober Gen Z glitter bomb of honesty. From Atlanta rap influences to emotional sobriety, heartbreak breakthroughs, and the pop-star fantasy she both lives and parodies, Ella shares how sobriety amplifies—not restricts—her creativity. They talk anxiety, artistry, community, Muppet Recovery memes (yes, really), bedazzling disasters, and the real-life glow-up that happens when you ditch alcohol and reclaim your energy.

This episode is hilarious, heartfelt, hyperpop-coded, and filled with quotable moments that prove—once again—sobriety is the start of a way better party.

Takeaways:

  • Emotional sobriety changed Ella’s creative process. She channels heartbreak, internal tension, and joy directly into her lyrics and content with radical honesty.

  • Sobriety = glow-up. Better skin, more money, more libido, more energy. Ella calls it “the ultimate anti-aging hack.”

  • Pop-star fantasy meets real life. Ella loves the glam—but also pulls back the curtain on crying between takes, breakups, and imperfect reality.

  • Connection is part of the work. She hosts Zoom sessions with fans for each new release to build authentic community.

  • Creativity thrives in sobriety. Both Alysse and Ella bond over being "painfully self-aware," driven, and joyfully obsessive about their creative platforms.

  • Recovery memes are culture. Muppet Recovery = required viewing. Ella immediately writes it down.

Key Timestamps:

00:00:24 — Ella opens up about anxiety, “addiction to problems,” and survival-mode energy from childhood

00:01:53 — Alysse introduces Ella’s music career: Love Island, NBA2K, X Games, and Spotify’s SALT playlist

Cheeky Cocktails & Sober Confidence: April Wachtel on Reinventing the Bar World 31 Dec 202500:50:59

This week, Alysse sits down with cocktail queen, educator, and entrepreneur April Wachtel, founder & CEO of Cheeky Cocktails—the bold, minimalist, flavor-forward mixer brand changing how we drink (with or without booze). From 20 years behind the bar to launching a brand designed to make everyone feel included, April shares stories of creativity, visibility, Saved By the Bell aesthetics, brand-building in a sober-curious era, and that time she heroically saved an event from serving mojitos made with actual oil (yes, really) . Whether you love a zero-proof marg or just want better options at the bar, this convo is deliciously inspiring.

Takeaways:

  • Inclusion drives innovation. Cheeky was created after April repeatedly felt excluded in bar environments while not drinking—so she built mixers that work for everyone .

  • Cocktails = connection. For April, flavor, hospitality, and celebration matter more than alcohol content.

  • Constraints spark creativity. When COVID hit, she DIY’d her brand design in hours, then later refined it via agency work—scrappiness meets strategy.

  • Pop culture always shows up. Cheeky’s bright vibe? Think Saved by the Bell meets premium minimalism.

  • Taste everything first. Her wildest mishap? Discovering a kitchen had prepped oil instead of simple syrup at a major event—right before 400 guests were served. Hero status unlocked.

Trainspotting at 30: Why This Brutal Addiction Classic Still Hits Hard 24 Dec 202500:41:23

It’s been 30 years since Trainspotting splashed into our lives with all the grit, grime, dark humor, and cultural punch that made it an instant classic. In this episode, Alysse, Tamar, and Sober Curator contributor Tony Harte take a wild, witty, and brutally honest deep dive into the most iconic addiction film ever made. From the infamous baby scene to the “Choose Life” manifesto to the worst toilet in Scotland, we unpack why Trainspotting still hits differently—especially when you watch it sober. Buckle up: this is pop culture autopsy meets sober storytelling at its finest.

Takeaways:

  • Trainspotting remains one of the most accurate depictions of addiction—messy, funny, tragic, and painfully human.

  • Irvine Welsh’s books are even darker than the film (yes, it’s possible).

  • Renton’s detox sequence is still one of the most iconic portrayals of withdrawal on screen.

  • The film’s religious symbolism is subtle but rich—from “Mother Superior” to the baptism-like toilet dive.

  • The soundtrack (Iggy Pop! Lou Reed! Underworld!) is a cultural time capsule of 90s grit and rebellion.

Adam Nimoy on Recovery, Reconciliation & Growing Up with Spock 17 Dec 202500:52:27

Adam Nimoy grew up in the orbit of an icon — but his real journey was learning how to break cycles, heal resentment, and build a relationship with his father, Leonard Nimoy, that felt human rather than legendary. In this deeply honest conversation, Adam shares his path from decades of daily “wake-and-bake” to long-term sobriety, the emotional maturity he fought hard to earn, and the radical power of living amends. When Sobriety Gets Messy (Literally): Cat Greenleaf Tells All 10 Dec 202500:48:31

In this hilariously honest and deeply human conversation, Emmy-winning host Cat Greenleaf joins Alysse to spill all the sober tea—from peeing her pants during a double-booking with Tom Arnold and Art Alexakis, to discovering what sobriety actually looks like when you're no longer a “lone wolf.” Cat opens up about service, creativity, aging, friendship with Pee-wee Herman, crafting on cocaine, and the real emotional glow-up that happens when you stop pretending and start living. This episode is equal parts chaos, charm, confessions, and zero-proof realness.

  • Takeaways: Sobriety gets richer when you stop isolating and start connecting with people who speak your language.

  • Cat’s shift from “lone wolf” to community deepened her recovery—and her sanity.

  • Golden-age celebrity stories? Yes please. Especially ones involving Pee-wee Herman sending hourly birthday messages.

  • Creativity, addiction, and reinvention always have a wild intersection (including cocaine-fueled stenciling).

  • “Zero fucks given” remains a valid business plan—and a liberating way to live.

“Goonies Never Say Die” — The Superfan Who Bought the House 03 Dec 202501:02:38

We went full pilgrimage to Astoria and then sat down with Behman Zakeri — the lifelong Goonies superfan who actually bought the Goonies house. He walks us through the wild buy, the meticulous restoration (yes, the Rube Goldberg works), and how he keeps the magic open to fans without wrecking the neighbors’ peace. It’s fandom, boundaries, community… and a reminder that “Goonies never say die” is a sober mantra, too.

Takeaways:

  • Fandom → stewardship: buying the house wasn’t flex, it was a promise to share it with the world.

  • Restoration with receipts: original red trim, distressed fence, working Rube Goldberg (robot chicken and all).

  • Boundaries matter: welcome the selfies; respect the neighborhood and the porch unless invited.

  • Community funds community: a simple donation box helps cover upkeep and keeps the Goon Docs open.

  • Sober parallel: “Goonies never say die” = one-day-at-a-time resilience.

Key Timestamps:

[00:02:16] Why this convo: fandom, boundaries, and keeping the magic without chaos.

[00:16:23] “Tell us everything”: the surreal buy + underdog energy.

[00:20:45] The attic, the missing stairs, and the decision to “bring the magic back.”

[00:25:06] Chosen over higher offers: why the seller picked heart over money.

[00:30:01] Rebuilding the Rube Goldberg so it finally works start-to-finish.

[00:41:09] No business, just joy: free tours for charity, Halloween Baby Ruths, and set-design secrets.

Inside NYC’s First Sober Members Club: How Justin Gurland Built The Maze 26 Nov 202500:41:51

Alysse sits down with Justin Gurland, founder and CEO of The Maze, a brand-new, alcohol-free members club opening in New York City’s Flatiron district — think elevated design, IRL connection, and zero-proof vibes for people in recovery and the huge sober-curious crowd who are done pretending their seltzer is vodka. Justin shares the very New York origin story (he got to rehab on Super Bowl Sunday, the Giants miraculously won, and that tiny moment of hope kept him going), how his sister helped save his life at 25, why social work was beautiful but brutal, and how he followed the nudge to create a space where people can actually belong. This is sobriety in technicolor, not black-and-white.

Takeaways:

  • Sobriety doesn’t end the party — it widens the guest list and changes the venue.

  • One tiny “against all odds” win (like the Giants beating the undefeated Patriots) can become your proof that things can turn around.

  • The sober/sober-curious crowd in 2025 is way bigger than just people in formal recovery — and they need community, too.

  • The Maze is purpose-built for IRL connection: Flatiron, Tues–Sun B/L/D, lounge, speakeasy, private events.

  • Healing isn’t just “remove alcohol”; it’s “add things that fill your cup” — people, beauty, music, service.

Key Timestamps:

[00:02:00] Meet Justin: 17 years sober, social worker, now building an AF members club in NYC.

[00:06:00] Golden 25th → detox → sister intervention that saved his life.

[00:08:00] Super Bowl Sunday in rehab: the Giants win and he chooses hope.

[00:17:00] The Maze concept: for people tired of standing in bars holding fake drinks.

[00:18:00] Location & hours: 24th between 5th & 6th, closed Mondays, B/L/D Tues–Sun.

[00:25:00] Why design & vibe matter in sober spaces (it can’t feel clinical).

Amplify Sober Voices: How Sober Life Rocks Is Building a Movement 19 Nov 202500:43:57

In this powerhouse episode, host Alysse Bryson gathers some of the brightest voices in the sober creator space — Margy Schaller and Laura Nelson from Sober Life Rocks, Shane Ramer of That Sober Guy, and Tamar Routly — to talk about amplifying sober voices and creating authentic community. From owning your story to curating safe, stigma-free spaces for connection, this conversation dives deep into what it means to recover out loud, collaborate without ego, and celebrate every stage of the sober journey. Plus, a look ahead to the Amplify Sober Voices Conference at Podfest, January 2026 — where creators, coaches, and community leaders will gather to lift each other up (and maybe dance a little while doing it).

Takeaways:

  • Community is the new recovery currency. Collaboration, not competition, drives the modern sober movement.

  • Time is irrelevant in sobriety. Every story — from 60 days to 20 years — brings value and perspective.

  • Owning your story is freedom. When you recover out loud, you give others permission to do the same.

  • Sober doesn’t mean serious. Conferences, connections, and creativity can be fun — and still deeply healing.

  • Amplify the ripple effect. When sober creators unite, their stories create waves of change far beyond social media.

Ringo at the Door: Wendy Correa’s First AA Meeting & a Life in Sobriety05 Nov 202500:48:56

Writer and longtime sober creative Wendy Correa joins Alysse to talk about getting welcomed to her first AA meeting by Ringo Starr, getting sober in 1987, LA music-industry years (Geffen, Joni sightings), the Aspen KSPN radio leap that led to assisting Hunter S. Thompson, and the healing practices behind her forthcoming memoir "My Pretty Baby."

Takeaways:

  • “If Ringo Starr can get sober, so can I” — the spark that made recovery feel possible.

  • Sobriety date tracks back to the first-ever SXSW; day one of 38 years and counting.

  • Industry years were thrilling and tough — glass ceilings and #MeToo realities before the hashtag.

  • A late-night KSPN audition unlocked radio dreams and a Hunter S. Thompson chapter.

  • Healing is layered: Buddhism, AA, Nicotine Anonymous, therapy, EMDR/IMTT, somatic practices and chosen family.

Key Timestamps:

[00:00] “Hello, I’m Richard” — Ringo greets Wendy at her first AA meeting.

[02:00] Alysse’s intro: 1987 sobriety, LA music scene, Aspen radio, Denver life and "My Pretty Baby."

[21:00] The DUI story that forced change — and a court-ordered path to meetings.

[30:00] “If I’m supposed to move to Aspen, I want a DJ job” — and she gets it.

[34:00] The 4 a.m. request line: playing Warren Zevon for Hunter S. Thompson.

[40:00] EMDR/IMTT and taking the “zing” out of trauma triggers.

Interstellar Object Is Aiming at Earth… Should We Drink About It? Sober Girls Talk UAPs, Clickbait & Cosmic Dread 30 Oct 202500:12:52

In this Halloween-adjacent, tinfoil-hat episode of Hot Takes, Alysse Bryson and Tamar Routly go all in on the internet’s latest obsession: the mysterious third interstellar visitor dubbed 3I Atlas — and why it’s got TikTok convinced the aliens/UAPs/possibly-not-friendly-space-neighbors are here. They unpack what we actually know, why the NASA site went dark during the U.S. government shutdown at the exact wrong time, and — most importantly — whether sober people will use “the aliens are coming” as an excuse to drink. Spoiler: if you want to leave Earth with a clear head, this one’s for you. The throughline? We don’t control space, we barely understand the ocean, and yet we still get to choose sobriety today. “Getting sober matters. Staying sober matters more.”

Takeaways

  • “UFOs” are so 1997 — it’s UAPs now (unidentified anomalous phenomena), because of course it is.

  • A third interstellar object — 3I Atlas — was detected in July 2025, its path looks intentional, and it even “blinked out” for 19 seconds, fueling conspiracy culture.

  • Online footage is getting harder to trust thanks to AI, edits, and government sites conveniently going down — digital discernment is now a sober skill.

  • Anxiety about the unknown used to drive many of us to drink; now we choose clarity over chaos. Cosmic dread ≠ relapse trigger.

  • Bottom line: the universe is huge, we’re the ants, and we still only have today — so stay sober, stay playful, stay curious.

Key Timestamps

  • [00:00] Tinfoil-hat cold open: “Jesus, take the wheel” and why this episode is literally hot under the masks.

  • [02:30] What 3I Atlas allegedly is, why it matters, and why TikTok ran with it.

  • [04:30] NASA site down during the U.S. shutdown — coincidence or cover-your-UAP?

  • [05:30] Would you drink if aliens landed? Choosing to “die clearheaded.”

  • [08:30] Oceans, fallen angels, and “maybe space is actually underwater?” theories.

  • [11:30] Final sober mic drop: “Today I’m sober and you’re sober.”

From Barstools to Boundaries: America’s Therapist Kelley Kitley Gets Real About Sobriety29 Oct 202500:49:23

Therapist, author and media pro Kelley Kitley joins Alysse to unpack “gray area” drinking, stigma around labels and what long-term recovery really feels like — including a visceral craving moment and the simple, honest tools that kept her sober. They also dig into cross-addictions, perimenopause curveballs, parenting teens and how sharing your story (even when it’s messy) can change lives.

Takeaways:

  • “Gray area” drinking thrives on qualifiers; clarity reduces stigma and increases connection.

  • Cravings can resurface years in — play the tape forward and “tell on yourself” to your sober network.

  • Sharing your story can be a professional risk — and a lifeline for others (and you).

  • Language and identity (“alcohol-free,” “sober,” “alcoholic”) often depend on social circles; choose what supports your recovery.

  • Perimenopause symptoms can echo old patterns; stack healthy coping tools early.

Key Timestamps:

[02:01] — Alysse’s Chicago intro + Kelley’s “grew up above a bar” backstory.

[06:00] — Media hustle: pitching herself, "Today Show" bump and making impact.

[09:08] — Making her mess her message: therapist transparency & the book.

[18:32] — A real-time craving in a hotel — and the group text that saved the day.

[34:23] — Labels, stigma and the “gray area” short film.

[27:26] — Perimenopause, rage, sleep and staying out of old habits.

In this laugh-out-loud edition of Hot Takes, Alysse Bryson, Lane Kennedy, and Tamar Routly tackle the ultimate sober pop-culture curveball: a New Zealand company launching “alcohol-free wine” for pets. • The sober movement is booming—and marketers are cashing in.

  • The Sober Scoop: Ice Cream, Sugar Cravings & Early Recovery Truths 22 Oct 202500:39:33

Sugar cravings in early sobriety are real — and sometimes they look like a pint of cookie-dough chaos. Alysse, producer T-Boog (Tamar), and Curators Megan Swan and Amy Liz Harrison dish on the nostalgic pull of ice cream, why alcohol can act like “liquid dessert” and how to find a saner sweet spot without losing the fun. From church-basement trail mix to daiquiri ice cult followings, this one’s a heaping scoop of honesty with sprinkles of pop culture.

    Takeaways:

    • Alcohol often functions like “liquid dessert,” so sugar cravings can spike when you quit.

    • Nostalgia foods (hello, ice cream truck!) can be grounding — and also a slippery slope.

    • Early recovery grace is legit; long-term, aim for awareness over all-or-nothing.

    • Rituals help: go out for a scoop (limited portion) vs. keeping a pint at home.

    • Share the dessert (sometimes) and share the joy (always).

The Sober Scoop: Ice Cream, Sugar Cravings & Early Recovery Truths 22 Oct 202500:39:50

SNL’s “Non-Non” Sketch: Sobering Laugh or Line Crossed?16 Oct 202500:23:38

In this fiery debut of Hot Takes, Alysse Bryson, Tamar Routly (AKA T-Boog), and new co-host Lane Kennedy unpack SNL’s controversial “Non-Non-Alcoholic Beer” sketch. Was it harmless satire or tone-deaf comedy at the expense of sober folks? The trio digs into stigma, humor, and timing — with personal stories, laughter, and a few very real emotions along the way.

    Takeaways:

    • Why the SNL sketch sparked such mixed reactions in sober circles.

    • The fine line between dark humor and damaging stereotypes.

    • How comedy can both start conversations and reinforce stigma.

    • The reality of “non-alcoholic” drinking for those in recovery.

    • Why open dialogue matters more than outrage.

  • "aka Charlie Sheen" Doc Review: Shame & “Winning” — A Sober Pop-Culture Roundtable 15 Oct 202500:51:40

The Curator crew dives into Netflix’s new Charlie Sheen documentary with zero-proof sass and sober clarity: from the infamous “winning” tour and media exploitation to codependency, father-son dynamics and the surprising Karate Kid near-miss — all through the lens of recovery, empathy and accountability.

    Takeaways:

    • “Winning” wasn’t winning — how exploitation and audience appetite fed the spiral.

    • The doc’s big reveal felt small; what we craved was deeper accountability.

    • Shame metaphors landed — but begged for lived insight and humility.

    • Denise Richards, love, and codependency: when care becomes self-erasure.

    • Nepo-baby guilt, sports and the friend named Tony — protective factors and the people who stay.

From Meth to Machu Picchu with Sober Travel Expert Ryan Lee08 Oct 202500:49:11

What happens when you swap a six-figure tech career and a dangerous addiction for a backpack, a plane ticket and a sober second chance? Meet Ryan Lee, founder of Capsule Adventures — curated group trips where the drama stays home and the booze stays out. From a meth spiral and a hospital scare to Machu Picchu treks and off-grid connection, Ryan shares how he vets travelers (no “one beer after the hike” vibes), why his itineraries are jam-packed and all-inclusive, and how sober travel became his survival — and his business.

    Takeaways :

    • Sober travel ≠ boring: replace nightlife with adventure, nature and deep connection.

    • Fit matters: short “vibe check” interviews keep the group drama-free and aligned.

    • All-inclusive flow: airport pickup to drop-off, activities, guides, meals, lodging — handled.

    • First trips can be small — prove the concept, then scale (hello, Machu Picchu).

    • Future vision: expand guides and build a nature-based recovery retreat.

    Key Timestamps:

[00:00] - Cold open: “If there’s one shithead…” — why Ryan vets every traveler.

[02:26] - From $300K tech path & addiction to sober travel reboot.

[08:43] - The idea: alcohol derails a group trip — so build a sober one.

    [11:31] - What’s included: the “silver-platter” itinerary.

[18:58] - Who comes: ~60% women, median age ~33, safety matters.

[25:57] - Alysse-friendly trip? Bali + Komodo (yacht, mantas, hot springs).

From Blackouts to Boundaries: Suzanne Warye’s Sober Shift for Moms24 Sep 202500:56:08

Sober lifestyle creator Suzanne Warye joins Alysse and Tamar to dismantle mommy-wine culture, talk perimenopause in recovery and share how getting sober before the pandemic — with three kids — sparked her mission to help moms trade moderation gymnastics for self-trust and community. We cover identity, shame, “Irish goodbyes” and why sober connection is the REAL life hack.

    Takeaways :

    • Sobriety is a proactive choice—don’t wait to “qualify” by losing something big.
    • Moderation rules keep you stuck; flipping the script makes alcohol lose its pedestal.
    • Perimenopause + alcohol = suffering; recovery supports sleep, mood, and sanity.
    • Community (virtual or local) is essential—“we’re only as sick as our secrets.”
    • Gen X superpower: fewer f’s to give; stronger boundaries with age and sobriety.

  • Secrets, Status, and Sobriety: What "Your Friends & Neighbors" Teaches About Modern Addiction10 Sep 202500:38:55

Alysse Bryson, co-host Tamar Routly, and The Sober Curator crew dive into Apple TV+’s "Your Friends & Neighbors" — a glossy, suburban caper that doubles as a case study in dopamine, status, secrets and the kind of “more, more, more” thinking recovery warns us about — through a sober pop-culture lens that’s equal parts smart, spicy and fun.  This episode's contributors: Sarah Alaimo, Carolyn Bunn Lane Kennedy, Dr. Sarah Michaud and Megan Swan.

    Takeaways:

-Addiction isn’t just substances—status, wealth, control, and adrenaline can be addictive too.

-Loss of job = loss of identity: the show nails how quickly “high-high-high” becomes the spiral down.

-Repressed anger and detachment fuel bad decisions (and some very expensive chaos).

-Dopamine-chasing shows up as bingeing—on shopping, sex, TV, and even risk.

-Beneath the glamour, real connection beats gold toilets and glass trophy shelves every time.

    Key Timestamps:

[29:57] — Decompress & don’t overthink: Accept what was, then rest.

    [01:10] — “Hangovers canceled, fun mandatory”—show intro & premise.

[02:23] — Why "Your Friends & Neighbors?" The setup + panel roll call.

[12:36] — Wealth, identity, and the slippery slope after losing it all.

[21:57] — "Big Little Lies" × "Succession" vibes; addiction beyond booze.

    [34:39] — Star ratings + lightning-round snacks & sober sips.

This Just In: Top 5 Buzz-Free Headlines, Mary J. Blige, and a Dumpster Raccoon Revival09 Sep 202500:09:35

This week on This Just In, your sober newscasters Alysse Bryson and T-Boog turn the mic inward with a lineup that proves The Sober Curator’s own channels are overflowing with buzz-free brilliance. From glossaries and crafts to books and booze-free cocktails, we’ve got your sober entertainment needs covered—plus a Mary J. Blige spotlight, a raccoon rescue straight out of TMZ, and five sober events you won’t want to miss.

Brought to you by Boundary Balm™ — rub it on before any family gathering. Now fortified with SPF 50 against guilt trips and unsolicited opinions.

    Top 5 Headlines:

    1. Glossary of Addiction & Recovery Terms

Ever nodded along in a 12-step meeting pretending you knew what “HALT” meant? The Sober Curator’s glossary is basically the Rosetta Stone of recovery. From “pink cloud” to “dry drunk,” it decodes the jargon and hands you the keys to clarity. Knowledge really is power—and in this case, power smells a lot like serenity.

    2. Curated Crafts

Put down the vape, pick up the glitter glue. Whether you’re creating a Pinterest masterpiece or a hot mess with googly eyes, Curated Crafts is here to keep your hands busy and your mind at ease. Art therapy > drunk texts, every time.

    3. The Sober Curator Library

Step aside Colleen Hoover—the library is open. Our #QUITLIT collection features memoirs, fiction, and even mocktail manuals. Reading is sexy, trauma healing is sexier, and sipping on a fauxjito while you highlight your favorite quote? Peak sober chic.

    4. Sober Poetry

Snap if you’re sober and sad! This collection of heartfelt poems delivers raw emotion and healing metaphors that hit harder than a breakup text at 2 a.m. Think Maya Angelou meets Dear Diary—without the regret.

    5. Happy Every Hour

Zero-proof cocktails that make RSVP’ing “yes” feel fun again. From fauxjitos to elderflower spritzers, this is your hub for recipes, reviews, and a little bit of audacity. Who needs vodka when you’ve got bubbles and botanical sass?

Sober Sip Celebrity Spotlight: Mary J. Blige

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul has been serving looks, lyrics, and sobriety since 2012. Inspired by the loss of Whitney Houston, Mary J. chose prayer, faith, and accountability over substances and self-destruction. Her mantra? Feel it. Deal. Then heal. It’s a mic-drop moment that reminds us recovery is the real remix.

🤯 Buzz-Free Breaking Weird (Like Breaking Bad, but make it weird!)

Straight out of TMZ: a Kentucky nurse gave CPR to a baby raccoon that OD’d on peach moonshine in a dumpster. Yes, you read that right. Misty Combs pulled the little critter back from the brink with chest compressions and sheer determination. Somewhere between horrifying and heartwarming, this story is proof that recovery comes in all species. See the full story over at TMZ.
