| Tony and Tracy Panecasio - Tour Reflections and Best Bits | 12 Aug 2025 | 00:24:05 | |
I had the pleasure of hosting Tony and Tracy Panecasio in Truro for a couple of days before they headed home at the conclusion of the Grey Ashes tour. We took the opportunity to record an episode in which they reflect on the tour and recall some of the best non-cricketing bits including the places they've visited, the socials they've enjoyed and the people they've met. Tracy also shares what it is like to be a WAG (Wives and Girlfriends) on tour - particularly when not knowing prior to the tour any of the other WAG's. Tony played in every one of the five ODIs but also was the chief media correspondent for the tour, whilst Tracy took hundreds if not thousands of photographs so during their time here in Truro I encouraged them to turn it all into a book because a tour like this needs a book! | It’s a tie! Last ball drama in the Grey Ashes! | 25 Jul 2025 | 00:42:38
The fifth and final match in the Grey Ashes series ended in a last ball tie! The series thus finishes 2-2 which means Australia retain the Grey Ashes. England batted first for the first time in the series and made 269. Then it rained, for a long time. Finally the Australian innings got underway with a DLS target of 194 in 26 overs. At 7/2 the Aussies were in trouble but man of the series Darren Smith, who had cancelled his flight home because of the rain delay, strode in and made 97. It came down to 7 needed off the last over and Kev Watson took wickets with the first two balls. 3 were needed off the ball and two made - so a tie! Plus we round up all the matches played across the O70s 3 Divisions on Thursday July 24th and we catch up with Ron Hedley. | Special Guest: Sir Tim Rice - O60s/70s Vice-President | 09 Oct 2025 | 00:27:13
Sir Tim Rice loves cricket, so much so that back in the early 70s he set up his own side – Heartaches CC – which is still going strong today. In the second week of September for over the 40th time the Heartaches came down to Cornwall to play three matches. I was lucky enough to play for the Heartaches against Falmouth on the Thursday and then against them for my long-standing club side Mullion on the Friday. During the Friday match I caught up with Tim and he talked about his love of cricket, how he got started playing cricket, and how he sees cricket moving forward. We have several guests lined up for the months ahead. If you have an idea for someone who would make a great guest please do let us know via podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk Silver Stumps is the podcast aimed at Over 60s and Over 70s Cricketers. | England v West Indies plus usual O60s and O70s Round Up | 20 Jun 2025 | 00:54:29
We focus at the start of this week’s episode on the England versus West Indies series which by the time we finished recording had seen England comfortably win the first two ODI’s and both Lions matches with just one more ODI to come on Sunday June 22nd. We discuss what we think the England selectors might have learnt from this series. Scorecards here: England Seniors Play Cricket Grant wears his Chair of Selectors hat and picks his England team for the first Grey Ashes ODI versus Australia which will be at Littleborough Cricket club on Monday, June 30th Do you agree with his selection? In the Seniors County Championship there was an unusual dismissal this week. In the O60s South West Div 1 game between Gloucestershire and Dorset a batter was given out for obstruction. Obstruction now covers not just obstructing the field but also handling the ball, and our understanding is that in this particular case it was handling the ball that the batter was given out for. Law 37.4 clearly states that if you handle the ball without prior permission from the fielding side and they then appeal the umpire has to give you out, unless of course the fielding side withdraw the appeal. The incident happened at a crucial moment in the game. Thanks to Phil Trayner we give a shout out to several players from Surrey who have reached 200 matches in county seniors cricket. | England O60s Teams plus weekly round up | 06 Jun 2025 | 00:52:10
The O60s programme was back in action this week. The O70s matches though on Thursday were hit by the weather. Our star cameo guest this week is Wales scorer Judith Tucker. Regular listeners will know that what seems like several years ago (given how often he mentions it) Grant had to retire with an injury v Wales and in the scorebook he was listed as 'Retired Out' which he disputed! I caught up with Judith during the Cornwall v Wales match this week to revisit that decision! Grant and I spent our episode prep time this week eagerly awaiting news of the England and England Lions squads to face the West Indies - mainly to see if the selectors agreed with the squads we picked! | England O60s Matches plus O70s round up | 30 May 2025 | 00:43:58
With the exception of one match the rain wiped out Tuesdays O60s programme with the only other O60s match played this week being the one that saw Hertfordshire beat Buckinghamshire in the carried over 3rd XI Vase Final. The O70s had a full programme this week which we cover. With so little O60s Cricket to report on we focused our attention on the England O60s matches and our thoughts on what the selectors will have learnt from the games between England and Wales, England and Scotland and England Lions and Scotland as they look ahead to the West Indies series starting on June 16th. Have they settled on an opening pair? How many ‘seamers’ will get selected? Who will be first choice keeper? Will it be time to say goodbye to some of the stalwarts? We followed the matches where possible on You Tube and we reflect on what we saw. The scorecards for all those matches can be found here: England Seniors Play Cricket You can find all the results, fixtures and league tables for the O60s and O70s 2025 County Championship here: https://seniorscountychampionship.play-cricket.com/Matches?tab=Fixture Here’s the link to the England and Wales O60s / O70s county championship website: https://6070cc.co.uk Here’s a link to the England O60s Facebook page Silver Stumps now has a small website which you can find at https://www.silverstumps.com/ - it features all the episodes and a little bit about Grant and Trevor, the co-hosts of the podcast. | O60s/70s Cricket - 2025 Season Week 1! | 02 May 2025 | 00:46:19
The O60s and O70s county cricket championships are underway with matches in the O60s 1st and 2nd XI competitions and the O70s 2nd and 3rd XI competitions. We review what happened including the O60s Div 2 Cup Final carried over from 2024 between Wales and Oxfordshire. One week in and we’ve already seen some incredible performances including in O60s Div 1 North a match featuring two massive hundreds and almost 650 runs plus in Div 1 South two five-fors. We're had a player going from a combined 0-84 in 2024 to a match winning 6-43 in the first game of 2025. We've had matches won and lost on the last ball, collapses and revivals, a couple of hit wickets and the first matches as a county championship for the O70s Div 3. We've had glorious weather, scones with jam first, scones with cream first and four all run fours in one innings. What a fantastic start to 2025! | Aidan Dennis reporting on the Malta Seniors Cricket Festival | 17 Apr 2025 | 00:32:51
The Malta Seniors Cricket Festival took place between the 28th of March and the 5th of April at the Marsa sports club under the direction of tournament, founder and director Frank Spiteri and tournament referee Barrie Burns. Eight teams took part in this event which has been going since 2018 and not only provides a fantastic opportunity to play pre-season warm weather cricket but also raises not insignificant money for local charities and this year that included Ron Hedley's prostate cancer awareness walk fund as Ron organised a walk during the event. Aidan Dennis organised the Surrey team that took part and Aidan kindly came on the podcast to tell us all about the tournament and make us wish that we had been there! The eight teams were divided into two groups of four who all played each other and then the top two teams in both groups played in the final the next two in the third and fourth place match etc… The 30 overs a side matches were played on a synthetic wicket with two matches a day at the same ground. Batters had to retire after 50 balls. It does sound like a lot of fun and included an excursion to the area known as the Three Cities and special guests Henry Blofeld and John Emburey. The teams taking part were Norfolk and Suffolk combined, Cheshire, Essex and Buckinghamshire in group A And in group B Sussex, sorry Kent and Bedfordshire combined and an Australian team known as the Kangaroos. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/EuropeCricketLegends Our next episode, which will be recorded on Friday April 26th, will be a preview of the season ahead. If you would like to be mentioned then send us a two or three paragraph email about how you see the season ahead or better still record a one minute audio clip which we can edit into the episode. You can record on your phone and email the clip to us at podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk - we need them no later than Thursday April 25th. | Mike Hayden - Wales in Cape Town and the season ahead | 08 Apr 2025 | 00:35:04
Mike Hayden is the captain of Wales O60s 1st XI. In March the team took part in a tournament in Cape Town alongside Zimbabwe (who went unbeaten and won the event), two evenly matched teams from South Africa, USA and USA A. Wales finished 3rd. We talk to Mike about the tournament which involved playing six matches in eight days and how to manage that workload when most players are used to playing only once or twice a week. We also discuss the idea of Wales O60s splitting into two 1st XI teams. An idea that came from the league rather from Wales. Plus we look ahead to the 2025 season with Wales competing in the tough South West regional group as well as playing England at Newport on May 23rd and finishing the season with the tri-nations competition. Wales are also hoping they might get a game against the touring Australians. | Raise the Bat! We've got to 50! | 02 Mar 2025 | 00:29:43
Who would've thought that just over a year since we launched we would be already pushing that quick single into a gap in the covers to get to our 50! Thank you to all our listeners and guests who made our first '50' such an enjoyable experience. We're taking fresh guard and looking to build on this foundation. In this 50th episode we talk about some of the highlights of a just over a year of podcasting. Episode one went out on February 4th 2024 which was a short introductory episode to get us onto all the various podcast apps and platforms. Four days later we had our first proper episode with then England over 60s captain Richard Merriman previewing the forthcoming over 60s World Cup in Chennai. In episode six the wonderful Ron Hedley came on and talked about the amazing walks he was organising to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer - £55k + £7k gift aid so far. Ron was followed by Lamby and Farby. Sybil Ruscoe reflected on her time as the first female cricket presenter when Channel 4 won the rights to broadcast England Test Cricket in 1999 Chris Lowe popped up to tell us about the over 70s World Cup and three weeks later, John Evans the England over 70s skipper came on to tell us about how England had won the O70s World Cup. We were thinking that we might struggle for content once the domestic season had finished but the O60s Grey Ashes in Australia gave us lots to talk about. Immediately after Christmas Rash and Mel Mahmood came on to talk about their experience of being Ashes scorer and state game umpire respectively for the Grey Ashes. We kicked off 2025 with Chris 'Noddy' Dearden followed by Paolo Iorio who offered some great tips for 60+ cricketers for their winter fitness preparations. We got to 49 with Scotland Over 60s captain Clark McConnachie talking about the plans and ambitions for Scotland Seniors Cricket. | Scotland Seniors Cricket - Plans and Ambitions with Clark McConnachie | 17 Feb 2025 | 00:29:15
Clark McConnachie is the captain of Scotland O60s. In this episode we talk to Clark about what's going on domestically as well as internationally for Scotland senior cricketers. Clark explains how for many years Scotland Over 60s and 70s have been under the banner of the Scotland Forty Club District but that all changed in the autumn when Scotland Seniors was set up to cover the current range of international age groups for Seniors Cricket: Over 40s, Over 50s, Over 60s and Over 70s. Clark explains how Scotland are currently preparing their application to be part of the International Masters Cricket organisation which if successful would then enable them to enter competitions such as the 2026 Over 60s World Cup in Canada. Clark also talks about the O60s international matches that Scotland have played in the last couple of years particularly the tri-nations tournament which involved England, England Lions and Wales. Some of the players including Clark did get international level experience by being part of the Rest of the World team at the 2024 O60s World Cup in Chennai. Being part of the O60s England and Wales County championship is something on the future radar and this season Scotland O60s will be playing friendlies against the northern based England counties on a mini tour at the start of the season. | Winter Physical Preparation with Paolo Iorio | 10 Jan 2025 | 00:36:04
Paolo Iorio is a practising osteopath based in Derbyshire who for the last 2 to 3 years has also been working with the England O60s team. We talk to Paolo about the role of an osteopath and then Paolo offers up lots of tips and advice for O60s and O70s cricketers who are beginning to think about the season ahead and their fitness / mobility. Paolo’s advice revolves around consistency in terms of a daily routine that might involve some strength and conditioning, some flexibility work and some sort of cardio vascular activity which could be anything from brisk walking to cycling to swimming to running. Paolo emphasises that the key is doing this on a regular basis rather than just occasionally. We talk about the benefits if you team up with a buddy or create a small Cricket community keen to improve their fitness and well being. One community to consider is the parkrun community. Parkrun happens at 1300 locations across the UK every Saturday morning at 9 am, so no matter where you are there's a very good chance a parkrun is close by. Use this link to register and then you will receive a barcode which you can download on your phone or print out and take with you and that will mean every time you take part you will receive lots of data which you can then use, to see and observe your fitness improvement All parkruns are 5km. You can start off by walking, progressing to run walking and then all in running If you want to know more about Paolo then follow this link to his website If you've got feedback or observations about the podcast or ideas for future guests please drop us an email to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk or press ‘send us a message’ at the bottom of these notes - please include your name and contact details if you wish as we can’t reply direct to the text messages.
