| 411 Throwback: Talking with David Taylor after winning the 2009 Dave Schultz H.S. Excellence Award | 05 Nov 2024 | 00:34:18 | |
Back on May 8, 2009, the Wrestling 411 podcast with Kyle Klingman and Jason Bryant was running through its first (And only) season. A senior from Graham High School in Ohio named David Taylor would win the 2009 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Taylor had signed with Iowa State, but Cael Sanderson had a few week prior left Iowa State to take over at Penn State. At the time, Taylor didn’t yet know where he was publicly going to go, although most assumed he would follow Sanderson to Penn State. This interview is from during Taylor’s senior year in high school. Taylor recently finished with a bronze medal at the non-Olympic world championships in Tirana, Albania, which most believe was his last competitive tournament. Taylor now takes over as the head coach at Oklahoma State. Enjoy this throwback from 2009. Want an ad-free version of the show? | Sipping some of that wrestling internet tea with Stalemates founder Zach Bogle | 25 Oct 2021 | 01:14:33
Zach Bogle started a current events wrestling outlet called Stalemates in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. With no wrestling, what else did wrestling people get to do to try to stay busy? It was like an extended offseason. Enter Bogle and Stalemates, which summed up the “Twitter tea” with weekly episodes, guests, goofy memes and a general breath of fresh air the wrestling world needed. Stalemates also ushered in another wrestling card concept, with a lot of former wrestlers and weekend warriors mixing things up in the Stalemates Street League. The second iteration will be coming October 29 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. Fans can subscribe to Stalemates via Patreon (patreon.com/stalemates) to watch for $3.99. We get a little bit into Bogle’s wrestling background and the Stalemates origin story before talking bout social media, wrestling and general goofiness as most wrestling people do. | Dan Hodge Tribute Series: Mike Chapman | 18 May 2021 | 00:47:30
The world lost the legendary Danny Hodge on Christmas Eve 2020 at the age of 88. Thousands were impacted by Hodge, but he made his biggest impact in the world of wrestling - both on the collegiate and international side and the more theatrical side of professional wrestling, commonly called sports entertainment. Episode 659 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast launches a miniseries of interviews talking to people about Danny Hodge. The first interview is with noted wrestling journalist and historian Mike Chapman, the inventor of the Dan Hodge Trophy, which is presented to the top collegiate wrestler annually. Chapman will set the table on the life and times of Hodge from his perspective as a newsman and author of four books that featured the powerful Oklahoman. Chapman had a big part in keeping Hodge as a name within collegiate wrestling circles and could talk for hours on the subject. The series will feature interviews in upcoming episodes from Lee Roy Smith of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, wrestling event promoter Jack Roller as well as professional wrestling legends and native Oklahomans Gerry Brisco and Jim Ross. | #WrestlingShirtADayInMay founder and wrestling advocate Jim Dutrow | 11 May 2021 | 01:09:25
Three years ago, Short Time host Jason Bryant (that’s me) did a #WrestlingShirtADay challenge with some wrestling fans. The end result was 366 days of different wrestling shirts to promote the sport. After the drop of wrestling at some wannabe school in Norfolk, Virginia, Jim Dutrow wanted to do more to draw awareness to our sport and the #WrestlingShirtADayInMay movement was born. Dutrow, a Virginia native and former college wrestler at some school in Harrisonburg that also dropped wrestling, launched the initiative as a way to recognize schools with wrestling and thank them for their support. The second year #WrestlingShirtADayInMay has seen over 150 wrestling fans showcase over 1,000 shirts and counting just 10 days into the month. | San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killion keeps calling Stanford out | 05 May 2021 | 01:04:24
Longtime sports journalist Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle joins the Short Time Wrestling Podcast to talk about the situation at Stanford. Now a columnist after impressive career stops at the Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News and Sports Illustrated, Killion’s job is to offer her perspective on topics in and around sports and the Stanford drop of 11 sports definitely got her attention. Killion and I will talk about why this is an important topic for a columnist to pay attention to, what the local media’s role is in talking about topics like this which are often overlooked due to reader surveys and topics that “don’t sell papers,” and why Stanford’s leadership should be held accountable and have to actually answer for their decisions. Killion also points out some of the fallacies in the posted rationale and what’s happened with Stanford sports since the announcement last summer. | Looking back and some Olympic Team Trials Memories | 30 Mar 2021 | 00:36:52
This coming week, we’ll finally have the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for what will be the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Originally scheduled for Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center, Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas is now the host city. Texas last hosted the Trials in 2000 to then-record crowds. The pandemic will limit attendance, but we’ll still have three styles of wrestling looking to crown champions who will earn the right to represent the United States. On this episode of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I’ll look back at the previous six Olympic Trials I’ve worked - four in the U.S. and two in Canada - and talk about some of the memorable moments from them. It starts in 2004 in Indianapolis, then on to Las Vegas in 2008, then Iowa City in 2012 and 2016 and then north of the border in suburban Edmonton in 2015 and Niagara Falls in 2019. Those dates don’t line up? I’ll explain some on-the-mat and off-the-mat schedules that make things unique in the U.S. and in Canada. | Who hit the podium for the fourth time in 2021? | 26 Mar 2021 | 00:18:46
One of the best parts for the statistically and historically minded is the weeks following the close of the men’s college wrestling seasons. Well, almost the close, since the NJCAA championships are coming up in April. The women’s college seasons ended with the NAIA Invitational and the long-named event for the NCAA schools, but they haven’t hit four events yet, so there’s no four-timers to discuss. On Episode 649, we get off the podcast hiatus after four weeks on the road and look at the placements of the 17 wrestlers who earned All-American honors by placing at their respective national tournaments at the Division I, Division II, Division III and NAIA level. | New Avila head coach Graham Karwath and his unusual career in college coaching | 29 Jan 2021 | 00:40:25
Graham Karwath wasn't ready for college wrestling. The Louisiana native had a solid high school career on the mats, but after graduating, he hung around and began coaching. When trying to get his younger brother recruited to college, Karwath crossed paths with then-Williams Baptist head coach Kerry Regner. His path to college coaching began as a student assistant coach before taking over head coaching positions at two schools how consolidated and closed in back-to-back years before he landed the men's and women's coaching job at Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri. What a long, strange path it's been. Hear about it now on Short Time! All that news and more … Daily Wrestling News, delivered every day, free. | Making a difference in Little Rock is more than just wrestling | 21 Jan 2021 | 00:50:37
Little Rock hosted its first home event of the year on January 17 at the Jack Stephens Center against Oklahoma State and SIUE. The tri-meet launched the second season of Little Rock wrestling on the mats. Coach Neil Erisman, an Oklahoma State alum, sat down to talk about the progress of the program in the second year of competition, what it’s like to bring in new wrestlers with something tangible to show rather than just a vision, and the investment a coach feels when they lose an athlete who doesn’t want to compete anymore. Erisman also explains some of the things that aren’t taught, but learned on the job, such as working with mentors from the community, giving back with community outreach as well as his relationships with assistant coaches Javier Maldonado and Chandler Rogers. | Beat the Streets Bay Area Executive Director John Lange on growing wrestling in Oakland and beyond | 27 Feb 2024 | 01:19:46
The new Executive Director of Beat the Streets Bay Area, John Lange, comes on Short Time to talk about his new role with the organization and his return to wrestling. An All-American at Penn State in 1998, Lange has the unique distinction of being the first wrestler in the full wrestleback era to have lost in the first round and come back to take third at the NCAA Division I championships. He spent time as an assistant coach at Hofstra and Eastern Michigan before assuming the role of interim head coach at EMU in 2005-06. A move to California almost 20 years ago gave Lange a new home and time away from the sport. When he wanted to get back involved in the Bay Area, he quickly found himself as the guy tabbed to lead. Lange breaks down the wrestling culture in the Bay Area and what Beat The Streets Bay Area is doing to help foster the sport in Oakland and the surrounding communities. | Des Moines Register wrestling writer Cody Goodwin on the changing face of sports media | 13 Jan 2021 | 01:09:54
There’s been a long time between the time I spoke with Cody Goodwin of The Des Moines Register for International Podcast Day. We’d just finished up with the Night of Conflict out in Sioux City, Iowa and were conversing about the state of wrestling coverage. Part of that wrestling coverage discussion is here on Episode 644 of Short Time where the 2019 NWMA National Wrestling Journalist of the Year talks about his foray into podcasting with In The Room, how he talked his bosses at the paper into starting one and how he’s used the medium to cover angles that don’t often get the space in the paper. You can listen to In The Room wherever podcasts are found (or by clicking here). SHORT TIME SHOTS I went almost two and a half hours on Saturday night as what was supposed to be Burroughs-Taylor turned into Adeline-Tamyra. To be balanced, it would be Gray-Mensah-Stock, but that’s too many hyphens to write out cleanly. What did I go two and a half hours with? Watchin’ Wrestling. This was the idea when I built the Speakeasy and I want to thank Bryan Hazard, Tony Rotundo, Zach Bogle, J.P. Pearson, Dysen Gould, Earl Smith, Jeremy Lanthorn and Austin Early for joining in the discussion. We sat around, had some beverages (not Dysen) and watched the wrestling and talked about it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do with this studio. Burroughs and Taylor will face off on January 13 on Flowrestling as Taylor had some contact tracing that forced him to delay. Speaking of Burroughs, he was on The Joe Rogan Experience, which is a Spotify exclusive, for a while. I’m still trying to finish it because it was a long episode, but so far, we as a sport are better because we have such great ambassadors like Jordan Burroughs. The NWCA released the new Top 25 today and Illinois and Michigan State entered the Top 25, giving the Big Ten 12 teams ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in history. Michigan State started out the year ranked at No. 21, but dropped out after a week. The Spartans popped back in and prior to the preseason ranking two weeks ago, the last time a wrestling team based in East Lansing was ranked on the college mats was 2009. Northern Colorado moved up to No. 23. Bear down. Also, checked the mail today and got some socks and a t-shirt from Dr. Joe Parisi, an administrator at Central Methodist University and former head wrestling coach at Lindenwood. Also in the mail was the sweatshirt I got from contributing to San Francisco State University. Hat tip to Jason Welch. Too bad the Gators aren’t wrestling this year. | Afsoon Johnston and her remarkable, trailblazing path | 06 Jan 2021 | 01:04:01
Afsoon Johnston, then known as Afsoon "Sue" Roshanzamir, was the first world medalist in women's wrestling back in 1989. Afsoon will talk about the book, Afsoon, written by Craig Sesker, that tells the story of how she and her family fled Iran in the early 1980s and landed in California. Her journey made her somewhat of an outcast in an era where tensions between the U.S. and Iran were high. She gravitated towards wrestling, a sport where girls were rare. Afsoon's breaks down the story of how the book came to be and discusses some of the turmoil she experienced growing up as a teen and as a wrestler. You can get the book at AfsoonWrestling.com SHORT TIME SHOTS Well, we’ve got Division I teams taking the mats all over the place and before I get corrected by my own correction, college wrestling has been ongoing since early November and that does include Division I. On November 14, The Citadel wrestled a home dual. The NAIA has been less prolific than normal, but they’ve had dual meets consistently. Now we have schedules for most of the 71 teams competing this year on the Division I mats. There’s a handful of Division II schools that aren’t competing - the schools in the PSAC, most notably. Division III has seen a number of conferences opt out, but the only all-sports conference where every school sponsors wrestling in Division III is the American Rivers Conference, formerly known as the Iowa Conference. We’ll see some Division III fire up this weekend. Speaking of Division III, Case Western Reserve head coach Danny Song stepped down from his post yesterday. Case is one of those schools that opted out of sports this winter. Before we get to the weekend’s action, we had a couple of matches in Division II on Tuesday. Coker topped Emmanuel 31-18 down in Franklin Springs, Georgia, while fifth-ranked McKendree shut out Kentucky Wesleyan 51-0 on the strength of five falls. Tyler Delaware picked up a 9-5 win at 133, he’s a transfer from some poorly ran Division I school in Norfolk, Virginia. The NWCA Division I Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday and for the first time since the Nixon administration, Northern Colorado is nationally ranked. The last time the Bears were ranked by the NWCA was when they were sixth heading into the postseason on March 5, 1969. The school wasn’t even known as Northern Colorado yet, it was still Colorado State College. The University of Northern Colorado’s name came to be in 1970. With five returning NCAA qualifiers the Bears topped Wyoming 24-19 over the weekend and with both teams receiving votes last week, that was all Troy Nickerson’s squad needed to jump in at No. 25. But wait, Northern Colorado wasn’t Division I until like 2008 or something right? True, but prior to the three divisional format, the NCAA championship was open and there were college and university divisions. Prior to 1963, there was only one NCAA championship. Schools like Northwestern would routinely dual teams like Wheaton and Elmhurst. The artist formerly known as Colorado State College lived atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. There’s a lot of history and wrestling tradition in Greeley and its nice to see what coach Nickerson has done to keep the kids home and put a ranked team on the mat for the first time in nearly 19,000 days. On the Network, new show releases from On the Mat with Austin Gomez and the #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcast with Pat Popolizio. The latest shout out goes to new team member Brenner Flaten. He was looking for access to the stats behind the curtain at almanac.mattalkonline.com and he became a team member to get access to it. So here’s his obligatory shoutout and he’ll have some gear coming his way! All that news and more … Daily Wrestling News, delivered every day, free. | In his own words, Sgt. Slaughter on the late Danny Hodge | 02 Jan 2021 | 00:11:19
The wrestling world lost Danny Hodge on Christmas Eve. The only wrestler to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated for his wrestling credentials, Hodge was a standout in three varieties of the sporting world - collegiate and international wrestling, boxing and professional wrestling. As Hodge became one of the favorites in the world of professional wrestling, he worked and trained with hundreds of would-be superstars, including Robert Remus, an Eden Prairie, Minnesota native who would later become one of the most iconic superstars in the business, Sgt. Slaughter. After Hodge’s passing, Sarge wrote a letter to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recalling his memories of Danny Hodge. On Episode 642 of Short Time, you hear him in his own words - part Remus, part Slaughter. All that news and more … Daily Wrestling News, delivered every day, free.
