This podcast features two motor racing legends with very different talents telling their very different stories of how they came to be a part of Colin Chapman's winning team at Indianapolis in 1965. That was the year Jim Clark stunned the motor racing world not only by becoming the first driver to win at Indy with a rear-engined car (The Lotus 38-Ford V8) - but also by clinching the F1 World Championship two months later. Allan Moffat - at that stage a young Canadian with dreams of becoming a race driver - worked as a go-fer initially for the Ford Lotus Cortina team in North America and then for the Indy-winning team; Jim Smith, a tough Aussie marine engineer who sailed to England to seek his fortune, found himself building said Lotus Cortinas in Cheshunt, England, after replying to a newspaper ad. From there it was but a small step to the Team Lotus race shop...
I spoke to Jim Smith outside my Sydney hotel; the chat with Allan is a little scratchy due to him being on an early-model cell phone in Australia while I was talking from the UK. I've re-mastered the call as best I can but apologies for any remaining imperfections.

Lando Norris began his race weekend in Austria with headset on, watching Alexander Dunne show his talent in FP1. He then quickly made up for lost time, setting the pace in FP2, taking the pole on Saturday and winning the race on Sunday. Of course, as Peter Windsor describes in this podcast, it was not as simple as that: his team-mate at McLaren-Mercedes, Oscar Piastri, applied pressure throughout the race; and Lando - like many other drivers - was obliged for most of the distance to nurse aero damage on the car. McLaren, though, finished one-two again, with Ferrari crossing the line P3/P4 (with Charles Leclerc ahead of Sir Lewis Hamilton). George Russell was P5 for Mercedes but Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen, who qualified only seventh, was eliminated on the first lap when he was t-boned by the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli.

Re-live a dramatic - and pivotal - Spanish GP as it unfolded from Friday through to Sunday. The race resulted in yet another one-two finish for McLaren-Mercedes but will be remembered for the fireworks in the closing laps, after a Safety Car deployment. Charles Leclerc eventually finished third for Ferrari, ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber-Ferrari), Sir Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls-Honda). After driving brilliantly in pursuit of the McLarens for much of the race, Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen was demoted to P10 after a late-race collision with Russell.

It all happened in qualifying at Monaco - the more so because the new two-pit-stop rule for 2025 also nullified the drivers' ability to manage (or not) the Pirelli tyres. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli scored a perfectly-judged win at Spa after passing the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in the closing stages - after making the pass, you could say, that he had been denied at Silverstone. Max Verstappen drove valiantly into P3 for Red Bull, despite a top speed disadvantage and numerous deployment issues - and he might have been P2 had not Leclerc's pit stop been "neutralised" by a brief virtual safety car period. George Russell, who did not complete lap one in the other Merc, has now been displaced in the World Championship points table by the driver with whom he clashed at Les Combes on the opening lap today - by his former team-mate, Sir Lewis Hamilton. Taking charge of this race from the pole, McLaren-Mercedes' Oscar Piastri drove faultlessly to the chequered flag. His team-mate, Lando Norris, meanwhile struggled in qualifying and drove a torrid race eventually to finish third, beaten also by Mercedes' George Russell. From seemingly nowhere on Friday, when his Red Bull RB21-Honda was plagued with understeer, Max Verstappen rose to the pole at Suzuka on Saturday and to an (unprecedented) fourth consecutive race win on Sunday. The rain delivered another F1 thriller in Melbourne, with McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris crossing the line to win by only 0.8sec from Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finished P3-P4 for Mercedes and fifth was the excellent Alex Albon (Williams-Mercedes), ahead of Sauber-Ferrari's Nico Hulkenberg and the two, disappointing, Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Sir Lewis Hamilton. The race was strewn with incident, beginning with Racing Bull-Honda's Isaac Hadjar crashing on the formation lap; Alpine-Renault's Jack Doohan losing control on the straight on the opening lap; Carlos Sainz (Williams-Mercedes) spinning into the barriers due to a Safety Car mode glitch; Aston Martin-Mercedes' Fernando Alonso shunting at high speed on intermediate tyres; and Gabriele Bortoleto (Sauber-Ferrari) and Liam Lawson (Red Bull-Honda) going off-course while running slicks in the semi-wet. In addition, McLaren-Mercedes' Oscar Piastri (who seemed set to finish P2) spun luridly onto the grass and both Leclerc and Antonelli survived quick track-surface spins without damage. Peter talks at length with the driver who in 2024 underwent open-heart surgery before rising again to win. Only one other driver in motor racing history - Robert Kubica - has won both a World Championship Grand Prix and a major rally championship; the other is Heikki Kovalainen. Winner of the 2008 Hungarian GP for McLaren-Mercedes and a podium finisher for Renault F1, Heikki subsequently won two Japanese Rally Championships with Toyota in 2022 and 2023. Then, in the spring of 2024, Heikki's life changed suddenly when he underwent urgent open-heart surgery in Finland. For two hours he was on life-support. As we now know, the operation was a resounding success. Heikki was soon back in business, presenting the trophies on the podium for the Secto Rally of Finland in early August, before winning again in Japan. It wasn't over, though: on November 25 he was lying a stunning third in the WRC2 division of the Rally of Japan when he crashed heavily on a fast right-hander. As he says in this interview, "it gave the new heart system a bit of a work-out..." And still there was to be an epilogue: basically uninjured, Heikki on December 14-15 jumped into a car totally new to him and won the all-tarmac Union Rally in Italy. All for the love of his sport. Which is why, in our opinion Heikki was unquestionably the star of 2024 In this interview he talks to Peter about his surgery (44:30); about his massive shunt in Japan (28.53); and about beating the likes of Michael Schumacher, Sebastien Loeb, David Coulthard, Felipe Massa, Sebastian Vettel and Toyota's latest Rally star, Sami Pajari, in head-to-head match races in a wide variety of cars (17:00). Join Peter Windsor as he talks at length with Peter Wright, the former BRM and Lotus engineer who, in a career that began in the late 1960s, not only pioneered ground effect with Colin Chapman but who also subsequently worked for the FIA on such safety developments as the survival cell, the halo, the HANS collar, circuit barriers and composite helmet design. Along the way, Peter also found time to create his own self-sustaining glider, to fly a Tiger Moth and to restore a Bugatti T51. Peter Wright spoke to Peter Windsor from his home in Presteigne, on the Welsh-English border, just before Christmas. The Constructors' World Championship hung in the balance going into Abu Dhabi but McLaren-Mercedes nailed it down with a superlative performance from Lando Norris: he took the pole and dominated the race, leading home the two Ferraris - McLaren's only rivals for the title - by a comfortable margin. Oscar Piastri qualified a strong P2 in the other McLaren but collided with Max Verstappen's Red Bull-Honda at the first corner; he finished P10. The factory Mercedes were fourth and fifth, with Sir Lewis Hamilton (on medium Pirellis) passing George Russell (on the harder tyre) in sight of the flag.
