This podcast features two motor racing legends with very different talents telling their very different stories of how they came to be a part of Colin Chapman's winning team at Indianapolis in 1965. That was the year Jim Clark stunned the motor racing world not only by becoming the first driver to win at Indy with a rear-engined car (The Lotus 38-Ford V8) - but also by clinching the F1 World Championship two months later. Allan Moffat - at that stage a young Canadian with dreams of becoming a race driver - worked as a go-fer initially for the Ford Lotus Cortina team in North America and then for the Indy-winning team; Jim Smith, a tough Aussie marine engineer who sailed to England to seek his fortune, found himself building said Lotus Cortinas in Cheshunt, England, after replying to a newspaper ad. From there it was but a small step to the Team Lotus race shop...

I spoke to Jim Smith outside my Sydney hotel; the chat with Allan is a little scratchy due to him being on an early-model cell phone in Australia while I was talking from the UK. I've re-mastered the call as best I can but apologies for any remaining imperfections.

Max Verstappen won the pole for the British GP - but by Sunday evening that seemed an age away: McLaren-Mercedes scored another easy one-two (or was it a two-one?); Nico Hulkenberg finished a staggering P3 for Sauber-Ferrari; Sir Lewis Hamilton was fourth, thereby losing his 12-year podium streak at Silverstone to the driver who spent more time than any other to break his podium duck - and Max could finish only fifth in a difficult-to-manage Red Bull-Honda. 2025 F1 Austrian GP - full analysis with Peter Windsor

Lando Norris began his race weekend in Austria with headset on, watching Alexander Dunne show his talent in FP1. He then quickly made up for lost time, setting the pace in FP2, taking the pole on Saturday and winning the race on Sunday. Of course, as Peter Windsor describes in this podcast, it was not as simple as that: his team-mate at McLaren-Mercedes, Oscar Piastri, applied pressure throughout the race; and Lando - like many other drivers - was obliged for most of the distance to nurse aero damage on the car. McLaren, though, finished one-two again, with Ferrari crossing the line P3/P4 (with Charles Leclerc ahead of Sir Lewis Hamilton). George Russell was P5 for Mercedes but Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen, who qualified only seventh, was eliminated on the first lap when he was t-boned by the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli.
