| Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere - Album Review | 02 Dec 2024 | 00:30:56 | |
What if a group of fellas from Colorado got together and mashed together 70s era progressive rock and psychelia with death metal? You get Blood Incantation, a band who's been making waves in the heavy music scene since 2011 with their genre spanning releases. With four full length albums and three EPs released 2013, their latest release ABSOLUTE ELSEWHERE is exceedingly well done. With some subtle (and some not-so-subtle) nods to huge bands from past to present, this album is a monstrous record. You'd be forgiven if you were to question how Blood Incantation was able to successfully work the differing styles together. Fear not, your questions will all be answered with the first listen.
| The Barbarians Of California - And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth - Album Review | 31 Oct 2024 | 00:24:42 | |
At long last, two of the three buffoons that make up Shit Talk Reviews finally sat down to talk about what will be certainly considered one of the best albums of 2024: And Now I’m Just Gnashing My Teeth from new LA based powerhouse The Barbarians Of California. The album smacks of rock, metal, punk, hardcore, thrash and has a few surprises thrown in here and there just to keep us all on our toes. The band’s lineup brings serious pedigree to the table with Eric Stenman on guitar and bass (Tinfed, 35 year studio guru as engineer, producer, mixer and stunt guitarist,) Aaron Bruno (singer of AWOLNATION, Under The Influence Of Giants, Home Town Hero,) Isaac Carpenter (drummer for AWOLNATION, Gosling, Loaded,) and Zach Irons (guitarist for AWOLNATION.) They also brought in Tim McIlrath from Rise Against and Daryl Taberski of Snapcase for guest appearances. While you might immediately assume that with such an AWOLNATION heavy lineup that The Barbarians Of California would be a similar band, you’d be wrong. There are certainly some AWOLNATION seasonings sprinkled on the album, but this record is a definite departure from that. Aaron’s vocals are frantic and unhinged while maintaining perfect control, the guitar work by Eric and Zack is groovy, thrashy and pristine and Isaac’s drumming is powerful and lays a heavy heartbeat for this new breath that’s been pumped into our musical lungs. The band brings serious heavy to this album and it’s a fantastically refreshing listen. It covers a bunch of genres, but stays cohesive throughout. It absolutely warrants listening to. You should also check out the interview the Shit Talk guys did with Eric Stenman a few weeks back to get deeper into the band and the album. Be sure to head over to www.shittalkreviews.com for all the other Shit Talk interviews and reviews. Check out the band’s website here: https://www.thebarbariansofcalifornia.com/

| Eric Stenman - The Barbarians Of California - Interview | 28 Sep 2024 | 00:46:47 | |
The Shit Talk fellas had a very enjoyable chat with the super talented studio engineer, producer and mixer Eric Stenman. Eric has been working in the music industry for over 35 years, both playing bass and guitar and running studios, wearing all sorts of different hats along the way. Going back to 2011, he has worked with Aaron Bruno and Los Angeles based band AWOLNATION. In recent years, Eric and Aaron connected with some heavy material that Eric had been working on in the shadows. Fortunately for all of us, we now get to hear what they came up with, and it is absolutely stellar. The Barbarians Of California have smashed onto the scene with the release of their first album And Now I’m Just Gnashing My Teeth. It’s packed with all kinds of musical flavors from punk to metal and thrash, punctuated by some moments of surprising calm. Fellow AWOLNATION members Isaac Carpenter on drums and Zach Irons on guitar round out the band’s lineup and they’ve delivered a heavy, super energetic, slammin’ first album. We’re all hoping that they hurry up and tour this album and then release more material! You can follow The Barbarians Of California on Instagram at @barbariansofca

| Lamb Of God - Ashes Of The Wake-20th Anniversary - Review | 16 Sep 2024 | 00:21:52 | |
Right around 20 years ago, Lamb Of God released Ashes Of The Wake. The reviews back then were excellent, just as the reviews of the 20th Anniversary re-release have been. And since Lamb Of God has been such a staple (and because LoG is fast becoming a heritage band within the genre) the Shit Talk yahoos wanted to talk about it.
| Downpour - Kill The Mind - Album Review | 10 Sep 2024 | 00:16:16 | |
This week John and Derek dig into Kill The Mind, the latest EP from Downpour. Fronted by Brian Fair (Shadows Fall, Overcast,) Derek Kerswill (Unearth, Seemless,) Matt Lebreton (Frozen, Cannae,) Pete Gelles (Birch Hill Dam, Sorrowseed,) Downpour brings a delicious mix of the heavy with some metalcore, progressive metal and straight up power. We love this record and our only beef with it is that it's just too damn short.
| Category 7 - Category 7 - Album Review | 03 Sep 2024 | 00:21:17 | |
Definition of a Super Group:
Derek and John sat down to yap about the latest metal super group to hit the scene: Category 7. Made up of five power hitters, the self-titled debut album brings modern power and the nostalgia of solid 80s metal. With John Bush (Armored Saint, Anthrax) Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall, Overkill) Phil Demmel (Machine Head, Violence) Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob, Nocturnal) and Jack Gibson (Exodus) it would have been a trial to release an album that sucked. As it happens, their first release decidedly DID NOT SUCK. Grab a seat and have a listen. (Then like, subscribe and comment about what jokers John and Derek really are…) You know what the single greatest website in the internet’s history is? We can tell you one thing with certainty: It’s not www.shittalkreviews.com. BUT, if you WERE to go there, you’d find all the other album reviews the Shit Talk crew has done along with a slew of interviews and other assorted nonsense. So you should check it out. Seriously. You won’t win a new car or a dream vacation house, but you will have seen some swanky music stuff. #category7 #johnbush #phildemmel #jackgibson #jasonbittner #mikeorlando #metal #armoredsaint #anthrax #adrenalinemob #violence #shadowsfall #overkill #exodus #nocturnal #metal #heavymetal #podcast #albumreview #shittalkreviews #grandmascookies
| Brian Fair (Shadows Fall, Overcast, Downpour) - Interview | 26 Aug 2024 | 00:39:18 | |
The guys sat down this week for a chat with the legendary vocalist (and fitness guru) from Shadows Fall, Overcast and Downpour, the one and only Brian Fair. They talk about sports (with balls and discs of all shapes,) Brian’s long musical history, Derek groping Brian’s junk in years past, Phish, and the mechanics of what it takes to maintain a voice over the course of almost 40 years of fronting heavy bands. Be sure to check out www.shittalkreviews.com for all the reviews, interviews and instructions on the best way to plant your perennials. 00:00 Welcome 00:40 Sports (flat, disc-like ball sports, round ball sports, oblong ball sports, etc.) 02:56 Derek’s non-consensual gropeage, the return of Shadows Fall and new SF music 06:00 New England Metal Fest 07:10 Brian’s musical history 08:35 What Brian’s listening to 10:30 The Metal Hippy Workout videos 14:05 Downpour 16:00 Spirituality and lyrics 18:50 Another Hero Lost 21:10 Style choices and Melissa Cross 25:25 When Brian “chewed through his own umbilical cord” (and how he got started singing) 29:20 Overcast 32:32 New record label, Shadows Fall and the new school of label representation 38:38 Wrap up

| Patriarchs In Black - Visioning - Album Review | 12 Aug 2024 | 00:20:34 | |
The trifecta of Shit Talk procrastination finally sat down to talk about Visioning, the latest album from Patriarchs In Black. In their third full length release, the duo of Dan Lorenzo (CASISUS KING, DAN LORENZO SOLO BAND, HADES, VESSEL OF LIGHT, NON-FICTION, THE CURSED) and Johnny Kelly (TYPE O NEGATIVE, DANZIG and A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH among others) have dropped another strong ode to one of the original masters of metal, Black Sabbath. As with their last album My Veneration, the team brought in a slew of heavy hitters to contribute on this album. It’s a fun listen, complete with classic Lorenzo riffs and a few surprises along the way! There’s a bunch of great feels in the tracks, with each guest musician contributing their own style to the project. It’s a long list with Mark Sunshine (RIOTGOD, UNIDA,) Karl Agell (ex-COC), Darryl McDaniel (RUN DMC,) Rob Traynor, Kelly Abe, Frankie Diaz, Kyle Thomas (EXHORDER, AORTHA, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY,) and Jason McMaster (WATCH TOWER, CASSIUS KING, EVIL UNITED) all contributing vocals throughout the album. Iron Lou, Dave Neabore (DOG EAT DOG,) Johnny Araya, Sal Iuvara, Eric Morgan (A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH, FIRST ORDER) and Eazy Ezekiel provide bass and there’s even a DJ spinning this time around; Jason Donnelly (DJ PUZZLE.) | Blake Ibanez (of Power Trip and Fugitive) - Interview | 02 Aug 2024 | 00:42:49
The guys were psyched to chat with one of the top riff and songwriters in the metal game today: Blake Ibanez of Power Trip and Fugitive. With a right hand like Papa Hetfield and a songwriting pen like Mustaine, Blake's work keeps the metal genre strong with killer playing and songcraft.
| Stu Folsom - Spiritworld - March 2025 Interview | 11 Mar 2025 | 00:44:07 | |
John and Derek had a chance to spend some time with a true renaissance cowboy: Las Vegas's own Stu Folsom. Stu is the founder of the killer crossover thrash band Spiritworld, an author and an all around great dude. They touch on Stu's early days in the rodeo, his vision for the trilogy of death-western albums, his book Godlessness and his lovely lady getting smashed in the face by a windmilling audience member.

| Cavalera Conspiracy - Schizophrenia - Album Review | 12 Jul 2024 | 00:27:39 | |
This episode the Shit Talk triumvirate yak about Schizophrenia, the latest album from Cavalera Conspiracy. Of course, as the majority of the content on the record was first released in 1987 by Sepultura, one could be forgiven for saying it’s technically a Sepultura album. In any case, the Brothers Cavalera have dropped a freshly re-recorded version that includes two new tracks written by Max and it’s a stunner.
| Boundaries - Death Is Little More - Album Review | 01 Jul 2024 | 00:29:00 | |

If you’re down with high octane dissonance, bruising riffs and heartfelt lyrics, this is absolutely an album worth checking out. It’s a wonderful bit of music. In discussing the album and the powerful lyrical content, the guys touch on mental heath and the importance of self care. | Wheel - Charismatic Leaders - Podcast Album Review | 18 Jun 2024 | 00:18:45
This time around Derek got progged over the head. And he liked it! Charismatic Leaders is the third release from Finland’s progmetal gurus Wheel. As the resident Shit Talk prog guy, John wanted to bring it to the table. The album is great and is covered with just enough frosting for Derek (the resident thrash guy) to dig it too; the consensus is that if you dig the metal but are new to the progressive side of things, you might dig this as well. https://www.shittalkreviews.com for all the reviews and links to casts of the pod variety.

John and Derek sat down this time around to do the Devil’s Work. (Or rather, to chat about Kerry King’s new album From Hell I Rise.) It’s all Kerry King, but with enough touches of the Slayer to keep the diehard fans into it. It’s got so much power that Derek wants to run back to the woods in Vermont and start throwing beer kegs around if that’s any indication… It’s a strong record and definitely worth checking out.
