| 257. Two expert tips for building your strongest brand! Guest Lele Sadoughi | 04 Aug 2023 | 00:40:01 | |
SHOW NOTES Title: Two expert tips for building your strongest personal and professional brand Encore Episode 257 Guest: Lele Sadoughi THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: One of the secrets of building a strong brand either for your company or for yourself means tapping into the power of your unique story and those elements that make you and your business special. This can be a challenging exercise, but when you’re clear on your core values and you’re aligning them with the things that you love and that you’re passionate about and you’re using them to help you create a product or a service that can then contribute to someone else, it can make all the difference. It can also help you differentiate yourself and your product in a powerful way! Tapping into what makes us unique and living in that uniqueness is also key to building influence. In this week’s conversation, I’m talking to the queen of the bejeweled headband — an embellishment artist who has taken “dopamine dressing,” but more specifically “dopamine accessorizing” to a new and colorful and sparkly level.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Lisa — also known as “Lele” — Sadoughi is the founder and creative genius behind her bejeweled namesake brand Lele Sadoughi. My conversation with Lele is part of our collaboration series with The Southern C. As part of this series, you have been hearing from incredible entrepreneurs and founders who are part of The Southern C network and who are sharing their expertise to help others. Whether you are already in the throes of running your business or just launching one or maybe just thinking about what might be next, I think you’ll find great value in all of these conversations. Lele Sadoughi started her celebrated, colorful jewelry and accessory brand after working with an impressive roster of well-known brands — Rebecca Taylor, Ippolita, and Tory Burch. She also launched the first ever J.Crew costume jewelry collection before deciding to launch her own brand in 2012. What started with jewelry and accessories — most notably the bejeweled headband– has now expanded to include a range of other accessories including wallpapers. Each has a fun, colorful aesthetic that is very uniquely Lele Sadoughi.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How to lean into your passion to create a business and a unique brand. How to manage your creative energy. Where Lele Sadoughi finds inspiration for her bejeweled accessories. The power of collaboration and knowing how to pick the right partners. Knowing when to pivot or expand, and why Lele advises brands to grow at their own pace.
LELE’S TOP ADVICE: “Realize that you don’t know how to do everything. Surround yourself with good, smart, trustworthy people who can make you a success and don’t try to do all the things that you don’t know how to do.”
I’d love to hear which topics and advice resonated most with you. Please share your thoughts with me on social media on Instagram, Linked In, Facebook, and Threads! | 254. Are you getting recognized for the valuable work you are doing? | 14 Jul 2023 | 00:54:49
SHOW NOTES: Title: How to communicate your value at work. ENCORE Episode 254 Guest: Dr. Laura Camacho, communications coach, author, and host of “Speak Up with Laura” podcast THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Tell me if this sounds anything like you: You put your head down and work, work, work. But, all that work, work, work hasn’t necessarily led to big promotions for you. What gives? Or maybe you were laid off, and your boss explained that it was because the company wasn’t clear what you actually do all day and how you add value. These challenges may boil down to how effectively you are communicating not just the work itself, but the value you are providing, and how you are able to think about and communicate your value not only to the team, but more broadly. If you are a regular listener to She Said/She Said Podcast, you know that a particularly important dimension needed to build and sustain influence is story. The power of story applies in how we think about our value and how we communicate it, and how it helps us create more visibility for the value we are already providing. Today’s encore conversation dives into this topic and gives you lots to think about and some great tools for communicating your value so that you can build more visibility, and ultimately more influence! EDITORIAL NOTE: Episode 254 is an encore episode and part of a podcast exchange with fellow podcast host Dr. Laura Camacho. Next week, I’ll be sharing the conversation Laura and I had on her podcast where we talk more about influence and the influence framework I’ve developed and how it can help you navigate and better utilize whatever life throws your way! ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Dr. Laura Camacho is a communications coach, the author of “The Practical Guide to Effective Communications,” and the host of “Speak Up with Laura” podcast. One of Laura’s particular specialties is helping those who might identify as introverts to more effectively communicate their contribution, and the value of their work. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: The link between effective communications and influence. How to increase your visibility at work and why it matters. The impact of using the right (or wrong) language, and how to avoid “Self-sabotaging language”. Introverts and extroverts and how each processes information differently. Why the advice to “just speak up more” isn’t particularly good advice for building credibility and influence. Beware “overthinking” when someone asks for your view. The role of emotion and how to create intention around it.
Be sure to share your feedback on which topics from this conversation resonate most with you. I’d love to hear! You can follow me and share your thoughts on Instagram, Linked In, Facebook and now Threads! Or, use the contact link below. Looking for more She Said/She Said? | 253. How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility (Part 2) | 30 Jun 2023 | 00:30:46
SHOW NOTES Title: How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility in your life (Part 2) ENCORE Episode 253 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Ever feel like your to-do list is running your life? Maybe you’re frustrated that you don’t have time for the types of experiences that make life more meaningful? Maybe you feel like your time is literally flying, but you don’t feel like you have much to show for it? These feelings are familiar to most of us, and they are often accompanied by an overall feeling of being overwhelmed. In this state, it’s very difficult to take a step back and experience joy or to work to invest in those experiences that help us build and sustain influence in our lives and careers. Chaos — and the overwhelm it leads to — can hijack our precious mental energy diverting it away from those projects and people who are most important to us. It’s calmness that enables us to be more present, while still getting all the things done that have to happen in a given day or week. It also happens to be an essential building block for building and sustaining influence! THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Laura Vanderkam is a time management and productivity expert, and the author of “Tranquility by Tuesday,” her latest book among an impressive library of some nine books on time management and productivity. Her work has appeared in: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune and Fast Company, and she is a repeat guest on She Said/She Said Podcast (Episode 93) having joined me back in 2020 to talk about WFH strategies with kids during the pandemic. Laura also hosts two podcasts: Before Breakfast, and co-hosts The Best of Both Worlds with Sarah Hart-Unger. NOTE: This ENCORE conversation with Laura Vanderkam is split into two episodes — Episode 252 Part 1, and Episode 253 Part 2. KEY TOPICS PART 2 EPISODE 253:

SHOW NOTES Title: “How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility in your life” ENCORE Episode 252 Part 1 of 2 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Ever feel like your to-do list is running your life? Maybe you’re frustrated that you don’t have time for the types of experiences that make life more meaningful? Maybe you feel like your time is literally flying, but you don’t feel like you have much to show for it? These feelings are familiar to most of us, and they are often accompanied by an overall feeling of being overwhelmed. In this state, it’s very difficult to take a step back and experience joy or to work to invest in those experiences that help us build and sustain influence in our lives and careers. This week’s guest will help you redesign your life to not only get more done, but to help you calm the chaos. NOTE: This ENCORE conversation with Laura Vanderkam is split into two episodes — Episode 252 Part 1, and Episode 253 Part 2, which gives you the option to listen to the entire conversation (both episodes back-to-back) which runs about an hour, or you can listen in the two separate 30-35 minute episodes. Your choice, but I do recommend listening to the episodes in order 252 followed by 253. KEY TOPICS PART 1 – EPISODE 252:
Don’t miss PART 2 of this conversation in Encore Episode 253! If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to let me know and let others know by leaving a review! | 251. How to write a book that helps you build your influence | 23 Jun 2023 | 00:48:55
SHOW NOTES TITLE: How to write a book that helps you build your influence EPISODE: 251 ENCORE
TOPIC: Have you ever considered writing a book to showcase your expertise, build your brand, and help others benefit from what you know how to do? Or maybe, you’ve seen colleagues and friends have success with such efforts and you think, “maybe I should do that too.” A book can be a great tool for building your brand and your thought leadership — both are essential elements for differentiating yourself and for boosting your influence. This week’s encore episode will give you great perspective on this topic! THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Robin Colucci is a journalist turned freelance writer and author turned book coach and entrepreneur. Her speciality is helping experts — like you — write books that showcase their expertise and build their influence.
Robin and I recorded this conversation back in 2020, and I found her advice incredibly helpful personally. I’ll be referring back to it this summer as I take some time off to think about additional content in the Fall. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE: Why Robin recommends a personality assessment for would-be authors.
How to land your book concept.
How your “why” is actually different from your book “concept.”
Why “lack of time” is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves.
How to deal with imposter syndrome as a new author.
You can learn more about Robin here, and grab a copy of her book: “How to write a book that sells you.”
Are you thinking a book might be a great way to build your influence? Let me know. I’d love to hear about it. And, if you are listening to the episode on your phone, please take a screenshot and share on your Instagram stories with a tag to @LauraCoxKaplan . var gform;gform||(document.addEventListener("gform_main_scripts_loaded",function(){gform.scriptsLoaded=!0}),window.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded",function(){gform.domLoaded=!0}),gform={domLoaded:!1,scriptsLoaded:!1,initializeOnLoaded:function(o){gform.domLoaded&&gform.scriptsLoaded?o():!gform.domLoaded&&gform.scriptsLoaded?window.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded",o):document.addEventListener("gform_main_scripts_loaded",o)},hooks:{action:{},filter:{}},addAction:function(o,n,r,t){gform.addHook("action",o,n,r,t)},addFilter:function(o,n,r,t){gform.addHook("filter",o,n,r,t)},doAction:function(o){gform.doHook("action",o,arguments)},applyFilters:function(o){return gform.doHook("filter",o,arguments)},removeAction:function(o,n){gform.removeHook("action",o,n)},removeFilter:function(o,n,r){gform.removeHook("filter",o,n,r)},addHook:function(o,n,r,t,i){null==gform.hooks[o][n]&&(gform.hooks[o][n]=[]);var e=gform.hooks[o][n];null==i&&(i=n+"_"+e.length),gform.hooks[o][n].push({tag:i,callable:r,priority:t=null==t?10:t})},doHook:function(n,o,r){var t;if(r=Array.prototype.slice.call(r,1),null!=gform.hooks[n][o]&&((o=gform.hooks[n][o]).sort(function(o,n){return o.priority-n.priority}),o.forEach(function(o){"function"!=typeof(t=o.callable)&&(t=window[t]),"action"==n?t.apply(null,r):r[0]=t.apply(null,r)})),"filter"==n)return r[0]},removeHook:function(o,n,t,i){var r;null!=gform.hooks[o][n]&&(r=(r=gform.hooks[o][n]).filter(function(o,n,r){return!!(null!=i&&i!=o.tag||null!=t&&t!=o.priority)}),gform.hooks[o][n]=r)}}); Contact Form

SHOW NOTES TITLE: How to level-set priorities in your life and career! EPISODE 250 GUEST: FRAN HAUSER TOPIC: Ever have trouble carving out time to strategize about your life, career, or a pivot you’re contemplating? Or maybe, once you do carve out the time, you aren’t sure how to structure that time so that you get the biggest return on your investment? What questions should you ask yourself? How much time should you spend? How often should you do this? If any of these questions resonate, this conversation is for YOU! Building in time for reflection and making it a regular habit or practice, is key to not only managing yourself, but to making sure that the areas where you are spending your time is helping you move closer to the goals and priorities that are most important to you. We don’t always think about reflection and time management as elements needed to build influence, and yet, without those practices in place, it’s really difficult to navigate all those competing demands on your time so that you can truly prioritize what’s most important while also helping you build and sustain influence in the process. This week’s episode 250 is an encore episode and part of a two-part conversation with startup investor, adviser, best-selling author (and renowned nice girl) Fran Hauser. In part one of this conversation we get into more of Fran’s story. You’ll find that episode here: she said/she said podcast Episode 197. TODAY’S GUEST: Fran Hauser is a startup investor and adviser who is focused on leveling the playing field for women by sharing what she’s learned in her career as a long-time media executive. She’s the author of “The Myth of the Nice Girl: Achieving a Career You Love Without Becoming a Person You Hate,” and “Embrace the Work, Love Your Career,” a workbook for women seeking more joy and fulfillment in their career. Fran started her career at PwC, moved into finance at Coca Cola, then to Movie Phone, onto AOL/Time Warner, and then into a series of high profile media positions at People, InStyle, Entertainment Weekly. At the peak of her corporate media career, she opted to strike out on her own to coach, mentor and invest in countless female founded companies.

| 347: When the Holidays Amplify Loss: How to Support (and Be Supported) Through Grief with Samina Bari | 05 Dec 2025 | 00:36:34 | |
SHOW NOTES Episode 347: When the Holidays Amplify Loss: How to Support (and Be Supported) Through Grief Guest: Samina Bari, Author of "Don't Call Me Widow" and Host of "The Afterlife" Podcast WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS NOW The holidays are coming. For many of us, that means gratitude lists and celebration. But for someone navigating loss, it means an empty chair at the table, traditions that feel incomplete, and well-meaning friends who don't know what to say. This week, I'm talking with Samina Bari, who lost her husband in a sudden accident while raising young twins. Samina talks about living through the devastating comments ("At least you're young"), awkward silences, and the lonely work of grief. And she's turned that experience into a mission: helping both those who are grieving and those who desperately want to help but don't know how. Whether you're supporting someone through loss right now or want to be prepared to show up when it matters most, Samina's insights will change how you think about grief, presence, and what real support looks like. MEET SAMINA BARI Samina is a communications professional who never expected to become an expert on grief. After an accident took her husband's life, she found herself not only navigating unbearable pain but also supporting her twins, rebuilding her sense of self, and discovering that nearly everything people said to her missed the mark. Her book "Don't Call Me Widow" and her podcast "The Afterlife" emerged from her determination to create the guidance she wished she'd had—for the grieving and for those who love them. WHAT YOU'LL TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE Words That Wound (And What to Say Instead): Discover why phrases like "they're in a better place" and "everything happens for a reason" can feel like daggers, and learn the simple, powerful alternatives that actually provide comfort. How to Show Up When You Don't Know What to Do: Presence trumps perfection. Samina shares the small, tangible actions that meant the most to her: from sitting in silence to taking on specific tasks without asking permission. You'll learn how to help without adding to someone's burden. Understanding the Identity Earthquake of Loss: Losing a spouse isn't just grief, it's a complete identity shift. Samina explains why this is uniquely disorienting and why treating grief like a problem to solve actually makes it worse. Supporting Children Through Grief (Without Making Them Invisible): Kids process loss differently than adults, but they're often overlooked entirely. Learn meaningful ways to acknowledge and support children who are grieving—without making them carry adult emotions. Navigating the Minefield of Holiday Gatherings: As we head into the season of celebration, how do we make space for those experiencing painful absences? Samina offers practical guidance for being inclusive and thoughtful during emotionally charged times. The Financial Reality No One Talks About: In the wake of loss, Samina discovered a crucial truth: women's financial empowerment isn't just practical, it's essential. She shares why this matters and how to start those conversations before crisis hits. Samina's wisdom is both heart-wrenching and practical. It’s the kind of conversation that stays with you long after it ends. What landed for you in this conversation? I'd love to hear what resonated—reach out through the links below. | 245. How to use behavioral science to break bad habits and make your goals stick | 12 May 2023 | 00:51:00
SHOW NOTES Title: How to use behavioral science to break bad habits and make your goals stick Encore Episode 245 GUEST: Dr. Katy Milkman, award-winning Wharton professor and author “How to Change” THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Ever find that the goals you set for yourself back in January have become a distant memory? Turns out, there are some significant scientific reasons why goals we set and habits we are attempting to break can be undermined by the way we attempt to tackle them. Learning the best ways to create positive change for ourselves and to create better habits is an important investment in ourselves, and can be important for building influence in your life and career. THIS WEEK’S GUEST: In this week’s ENCORE Episode, I’m joined by Dr. Katherine “Katy” Milkman, an award-winning professor of behavioral science at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the co-director (along with Professor Angela Duckworth (author of “Grit”) of the Behavior Change for Good Initiative, a research center with the mission of advancing the science of lasting behavior change whose work is being chronicled by Freakonomics Radio. Katy is an expert on how to spur positive and lasting change, and she’s the author of the bestselling book: How to Change: The Science of Getting From Where You are to Where You Want to Be.” She hosts the popular Charles Schwab behavioral economics podcast Choiceology, and is the former president of the international Society for Judgment and Decision Making. Over the course of her career, Katy has worked with or advised dozens of organizations on how to spur positive change. KEY TOPICS: THE SCIENCE BEHIND WHY WE HAVE TROUBLE BREAKING BAD HABITS AND ACHIEVING OUR GOALS: Unlike many self-help authors, Katy’s approach is based in behavioral science THE ROLE OF MINDSET: why the way you think about and approach goals can make a tremendous difference in their outcome. THE ROLE OF CONFIDENCE & SELF-DOUBT: A lack of self-efficacy can prevent us from setting goals in the first place. When we don’t “believe” we have the capacity to change it makes taking that first step incredibly difficult. WHY YEAR END “RESETS” ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE! WHY “Temptation Bundling” is KATY’S FAVORITE GOAL SETTING HACK HOW TO COMBAT THE “WHAT THE HELL EFFECT” that often occurs when you’ve already slipped Why THE COMPANY YOU KEEP matters: Your mother was right! Katy says don’t underestimate the impact the people around us have on our goals and habits. KATY’S ADVISORS: originally called “The NO Club,” is a great example of the power of connection and of creating a network that supports particular goals and objectives. Understanding human nature and using natural tendencies to not only better manage ourselves, but also to understand others is an important key to INFLUENCE. | 242. How to shift your mindset and boost your mood! BONUS Episode with Meaghan B Murphy | 21 Apr 2023 | 00:41:32
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to shift your mindset, boost your mood, and build your influence” Episode 242 Guest: Meaghan B Murphy, editor-in-chief, Woman’s Day Magazine Have you ever heard the advice to dress for the job you want versus the job you already have? Or maybe, a slightly different take on that concept: dress for the mood you want versus the one you might currently be in? Engaging in micro strategies that become habits — like wearing clothing you feel good in or surrounding yourself with color that appeals to you — is scientifically shown to have mood boosting power for many people. The same can be said of other micro habits that when practiced consistently can help us shift the way we react to setbacks. Mindset is also a key building block for influence, which is why I’m excited to share this ENCORE BONUS Episode with you this week.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Meaghan B Murphy is the Editor-in-Chief of Woman’s Day Magazine, which reaches some 18 million readers each month. She is also the author of “Your Fully Charged Life: A Radically simple approach to having endless energy and filling every day with yay.” Meaghan and I recorded this conversation back in 2021, but it’s one of my favorites for illustrating the impact of positive microhabits on mindset and ultimately influence. Meaghan’s journey to becoming the positive, “lightning bolt” we see today was not without hardship, nor was it where her family necessarily thought she would end up. She shares why, and how she began to shift her habits and ultimately her thinking to create a much more joyful and happier existence. Ultimately those practices inspired Meaghan to develop the methodology behind “Your Fully Charged Life” which we discuss in this conversation. Meaghan is also a regular on morning shows, dispensing home and life hacks to audiences on: Today, GMA, and Live with Kelly & Ryan. You can also find Meaghan as a co-host of “Off the Gram” podcast, as well as with her husband Pat and three young children in Westfield, NJ. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How mindset relates to influence. The science behind how we can shift and alter our mindset. How Meaghan shifted her perspective and entire existence in ways that have enabled her to achieve and maintain a higher level of overall happiness. The role gratitude plays in helping us create a positive mindset. How to create more fun and more joy on a daily basis, and the impact that has on your overall outlook, including giving you better resilience when things don’t work out. Why there is great power in micro habits practiced consistently over time. Meaghan also shares a great tip on “job crafting,” which is especially valuable for anyone contemplating a potential career pivot, or who has become less challenged at work. Perhaps most importantly, Meaghan illustrates what I believe is the most important element of a positive mindset: working at it, and creating a toolkit of practices that help keep you on track, or recover and regroup when you stumble.
WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND? AND WHAT CAREER CHALLENGES ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH? Send me your thoughts on other topics that would be helpful to you, and be sure to share your feedback on this episode. | 241. Are you underestimating your influence? | 14 Apr 2023 | 00:12:01
SHOW NOTES Title: “Are you underestimating your influence?” Episode 241 Guest: solo THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Every person we meet or interact with provides us with an opportunity for influence — positive or negative. That includes of course those with whom we spend most of our time, but it can also include complete strangers. Social psychology professor Vanessa Bohns says we often underestimate, or fail to consider, our potential for influence. These can be powerful interactions and can have more of a lasting impact than realize. I often talk about influence related to our careers. While this episode certainly contains some valuable career advice, it holds important value closer to home as well.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: I’m solo this week
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:
EVEN WHEN WE ALREADY HAVE THE TOOLS FOR INFLUENCE we can still benefit from being reminded to use them.
WE HAVE MORE INFLUENCE THAN WE REALIZE: how are you using yours?
THE “COMPLIMENT STUDY” BY PROF. VANESSA BOHNS may cause you to reconsider that seemingly awkward compliment shared with someone else. You compliment has more impact than you may realize!

| 240. How to build a strong brand that helps you avoid the comparison trap! | 07 Apr 2023 | 00:48:30 | |
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to build a values-based brand and avoid the comparison trap” Episode 240 Guest: MiMi Striplin, founder, The Tiny Tassel THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Have you ever fallen into the comparison trap? You know the one where you look around — especially on Instagram or Facebook — and see what others are doing, and start comparing where you are — personally and professionally? And, before you know it, you’ve fallen into a rabbit hole of self doubt that can obliterate your confidence. Sound familiar?
Social media often gets much of the blame for this, but in reality that tendency would probably be there whether instagram existed or not. It’s just that we have more of a lens and more options to see what others want us to see — up close — than we used to.
It’s important to distinguish between competition and comparison.
Competition is a good thing especiall when it challenges, motivates and inspires us. And, Keeping tabs on the compeition is important and gives us some great data. But when we let competition drift and become an exercise of COMPARISION that’s when we enter the danger zone. And it can be very difficult and even painful to navigate our way out. Comparison doesn’t just steal joy, as the saying goes, it also steals your ability to create real influence!
This week’s guest shares such great wisdom on this topic, including how to know who to listen to. I know you’re going to love this converation and love her. ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Mimi Striplin is the founder of Charleston, SC based The Tiny Tassle. This joyful jewlery accessory and apparel brand is located on Spring Street in the heart of that beautiful city. If you are headed that direction be sure to stop by and check it out, and tell her team that you heard MiMi’s story on She Said/She Said Podcast!
In addition to showcasing her own unique designs that started with tassel earrings and have grown to so much more, MiMi is dedicated to using her influence and success to showcase and support others founders and artists.
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How you can align your values with your brand, and why that matters;
How to learn which voices to listen to as you get feedback;
How MiMi got her start and the advice she shares for early stage entrepreneurs;
How she tapped into her brand’s core values and how those values drive every part of her business, and help her navigate the competitive landscape.
Why you might want to consider hiring a business coach.
How to think about working smarter v. working harder.

| 239. BONUS EPISODE: “How your influence can support your entrepreneurial dreams” | 31 Mar 2023 | 00:50:06 | |
Title: “How your influence can support your entrepreneurial dreams” WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH BONUS ENCORE Episode 239 Guest: A’Lelia Bundles, journalist, author and great-great granddaughter of Madam C. J. Walker THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Building influence in your life and career can also help you create and leverage entrepreneurial opportunities— opportunities that don’t just serve your personal purposes, but that can help address an important need or fill a void that exists. When we get that right, it can make a tremendous difference in our ability to connect with our potential client or customer and in ways that help move them to become “raving fans!” It becomes a relationship, and something that’s much more powerful than a simple transaction. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing a special collaboration series featuring women founders and entrepreneurs who are part of The Southern Coterie network. Like she said/she said podcast, The Southern C’s mission is to encourage and empower women personally and professionally and to do so by sharing stories, best practices, and advice. That sharing often leads to some powerful collaborations and some incredible opportunities! As I’ve been reflecting on entrepreneurship and collaboration, and the connection to influence, I’ve also been thinking about one of my favorite stories about one of the first women business founders who grew her company to become one of the first women millionaires, and the first woman of color to do so. Her story is one of not only entrepreneurship, but also connection, empowering others, and pure chutzpah. It’s a great compliment to our TSC series and also a great way to celebrate Women’s History Month! THIS WEEK’S GUEST: A’Lelia Bundles is the great, great granddaughter of Madam C. J. Walker, one of the first women millionaires who built her company in the early 1900s to create products for African American women when few such products were available. With tremendous hard work and the support of her community of women, she propelled herself from laundress to entrepreneur and she did it using so many of the levers of influence that we talk about on this podcast. In this weeks BONUS ENCORE Episode to celebrate Women’s History Month, I’m sharing my conversation with A’Lelia which we recorded in 2021. A’Lelia is an award-winning journalist and historian who is the official keeper of her family’s history. Her book “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker” was adapted into a Netflix series that fictionalizes aspects of Walker’s story.
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How Madam Walker’s service mindset helped her build a strong customer base. How Madam Walker used direct marketing to create a connection with her customer. How Madam Walker drew confidence from her close network of women. How she turned the investment she made in herself into investments in others in a myriad of ways. How A’Lelia perspective and commitment to Madam Walker’s story is the reason why we have a better understanding of her incredible accomplishments.
How are you celebrating Women’s History Month? And which women are inspiring you? Please be sure to let me know. You can reach me via the link in the show notes which you’ll find here: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com . or email me and the she said team directly: @ info@shesaid.media You can also follow me and share your thoughts with me on social media on Instagram, Linked In, and Facebook.

| 238. How to harness your creative gifts and build your unique brand with Lele Sadoughi | 24 Mar 2023 | 00:39:25 | |
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to harness your creative gifts and build your unique brand” Episode 238 Guest: Lisa “Lele” Sadoughi THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: One of the secrets to building a strong brand — for your company or for yourself — means tapping into the power of your unique story and those elements that make you and your business special. This can be a challenging, but when you’re clear on your core values and you’re aligning them with the things that you are passionate about, and using those things to help you create a product or a service that can then contribute to someone else, it can make all the difference. It can also help you differentiate yourself and your product in a powerful way! Tapping into what makes us unique and living in that uniqueness is also key to building influence. In this week’s conversation, I’m talking to the “queen of the headband” — an embellishment artist who has taken “dopamine dressing,” but more specifically “dopamine accessorizing” to a new, colorful, and sparkly level!
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Lisa — also known as “Lele” — Sadoughi is the founder and creative genius behind her bejeweled, namesake brand Lele Sadoughi. My conversation with Lele is part of our collaboration series with The Southern Coterie. Over the past few weeks, I have been talking with incredible entrepreneurs and founders who are part of The Southern C network and who are sharing their expertise to help others. Whether you are already in the throes of running your business, just launching one, or maybe just thinking about what might be next, I think you’ll find great value in all of these conversations. Lele Sadoughi started her celebrated, colorful jewelry and accessory brand after working with an impressive roster of well-known brands — think Rebecca Taylor, Ippolita, and Tory Burch.
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How Lele got her start. Why leaning into your passion (v. what others may be telling you) can be key to creating your business and your unique brand. How Lele manages her creative energy and her tips on finding inspiration. How to leverage the power of collaboration and Lele’s tips for picking the right partners (and walking away when it’s not working). Lele’s advice for knowing when to pivot or expand, and why she advises brands to grow at their own pace.
LELE’S TOP ADVICE: “Realize that you don’t know how to do everything. Surround yourself with good, smart, trustworthy people who can make you a success and don’t try to do all the things that you don’t know how to do.” There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode. I know you’re going to love it, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Please be sure to let me know what struck you in this conversation? I’d love to hear. | 237. How mindset can help you manage chaos, career pivots, and can dramatically increase your chances of success” | 17 Mar 2023 | 00:49:12
Title: “How mindset can help you manage chaos, career pivots, and dramatically increase your chances of success” Episode 237 Guest: Mary Giuliani
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: There is something to be said for the power that comes with how we think about and approach challenges — The challenges we see coming, and know about in advance, and the ones that knock us over the head and surprise us. If you are normal, and if your life is anything like mine, you have a healthy serving of both types — and probably on a near daily basis. Our ability to navigate these challenges in a way that is positive — even when the outcome in the moment isn’t —- is often an important indicator of future success, because it helps us build resilience needed to plow ahead when things get rocky. All of this underscores an important element needed for building and sustaining influence: mindset. Mindset is one of the themes in this week’s episode — the fourth in our collaboration series with The Southern Coterie, but specifically how it’s helped this week’s guest not only build an incredibly successful catering company, but also helped her realize a few other dreams as well. ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Mary Giuliani is an author, party and lifestyle expert and the CEO of Mary Giuliani Catering and Events. She launched her company almost two decades ago, and since that time has created incredible events for some of the biggest names in business, media and entertainment. She’s also appeared regularly on shows like: The Today Show, Rachael Ray, Good Morning America, and the Barefoot Contessa among others. Mary is the author of three books, with her third book: “How To Win Friends And Influence No One.”– which we talk about in this episode — due to be published in May and available for pre-sale HERE. This conversation is part of our collaboration series with The Southern C!
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: MINDSET: Mary talks about the power of “delusional optimism” and how it’s impacted her journey. MAKING THE PIVOT FROM ASPIRING ACTOR TO CATERING STORYTELLER: Mary talks about how she knew when to pivot, and what made her approach unique. MARY’S SECRET TO CREATING MEMORABLE EVENTS: tapping into the power of story! MARY’S TIPS FOR RECHARGING HER CREATIVITY WHY MARY GIVES HERSELF A REPORT CARD: and how you can adopt a similar strategy for yourself. THE POWER OF INTENTION: when combined with mindset. Friend, Mary is charming and funny and delightful which is why it damned near broke my heart that I screwed up my end of the audio in our conversation. My fabulous editor Somnath dramatically improved the quality – so a big shout out to him! But I found this week’s episode –and my mistake — a good teaching moment opportunity for myself, and maybe for you if you need to hear this advice which I explain in the episode. Mary talks about managing the chaos in her own business, and I took some much needed comfort from our conversation and I think you will too.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? I’m excited to hear your feedback. Please be sure to let me know what struck you in this conversation, and which of Mary’s tips and advice might you put to use in your own life. I’d love to hear! You can reach me via the link in the show notes which you’ll find here in Episode 237: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com . or email me and the She Said Team directly: info@shesaid.media You can also follow me and share your thoughts with me on social media on Instagram, Linked In, and Facebook. | 236. “How to have a bigger impact and increase your influence by rethinking your investment strategy” with venture capital investor Carrie Colbert, Curate Capital | 10 Mar 2023 | 00:46:11
TITLE: “How to have a bigger impact and increase your influence by rethinking your investment strategy” with venture capital investor Carrie Colbert, Curate Capital EPISODE: 236 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: You’ve no doubt heard or received the advice to make sure your personal financial investment portfolio is diversified. But what about making sure that you are thinking about both influence and impact as you think about ways to diversify your financial strategy? As we build our careers and our businesses, it can be incredibly easy to put things like our investment strategies on the back burner. But in reality, a thoughtful and diversified approach to your financial investments can help give you additional options if/when you do decide to pivot from a job or try something completely new, including the possibility of turning your side hustle into your full time business. NOTE: Today’s conversation should not take the place of more personalized advice and review of your investment strategy, but it will give you lots to think about as you consider how your portfolio can help you build influence and impact in the process of saving for your future. If you find discussion of personal investing a bit too esoteric or frankly worry about putting your hard earned dollars at risk, this week’s guest will give you a different way of thinking about your investment strategy. And, she’ll make a hard sell on why women like you and me are actually the answer to increasing badly needed funding for women owned companies. HOW DOES THIS TOPIC RELATE TO HELPING YOU BUILD INFLUENCE? Quite simply, financial independence gives us freedom and autonomy. It also can enable us to invest in areas that are personally as well as financially rewarding.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: This week’s conversation continues our collaboration series with The Southern Coterie, my guest this week is Carrie Colbert. Carrie is the founder and CEO of Houston-based Curate Capital, a venture capital fund that Carrie created to invest in women owned companies to help accelerate their growth. Her results continually speak for themselves, as her fund has consistently seen solid returns on its investments in many of her carefully selected portfolio companies. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE:
There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Are you rethinking your own investment strategy? Or maybe some additional ways that you can increase your impact? Please be sure to let me know. I’d love to hear! | 235. Women’s History Month BONUS Episode: “Understanding the influence of the first ‘podcaster’ at the White House” | 08 Mar 2023 | 00:36:20
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH BONUS/Encore Episode Title: “Understanding the influence of the first ‘podcaster’ at the White House” Episode 235 Guest: Julia Sweig, author & historian on Lady Bird Johnson
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Sometimes influence is something that happens behind the scenes. In some cases, we might not fully understand the impact until years later, as is the case with the story I’m sharing with you this week in honor of Women’s History Month.
THIS WEEK’S BONUS EPISODE: I’ve pulled from the She Said/She Said Podcast archives to find a couple of episodes that showcase unique stories about influence, chutzpah, innovation, and impact. The first, which I’m sharing with you in Episode 235, is a conversation about a former First Lady who was not only a key adviser to the President, but who had her own seat in important meetings in the Oval Office. Known largely for her beautification and conservation efforts, what wasn’t well understood about this particular First Lady was how her efforts contributed to important policy making – including the passage of the Civil Rights Act. A personal historian in her own right, she could also rightly claim the mantle “first White House podcaster,” well before the medium existed. I’m talking of course about Lady Bird Johnson. When historian Julia Sweig ran across more than 123 hours of largely ignored audio tapes recorded by Mrs. Johnson herself during her time as first lady, she knew she found a treasure trove! The recordings begin with Mrs. Johnson’s first hand account of the tragic events that led to her husband becoming president.
KEY TOPICS: In this encore episode, Julia joins me for a deep dive into:
Women’s history month is a perfect opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and to celebrate some of those lesser known stories about incredible women in our history. It’s also a great time to think about how our ability to influence — both publicly and privately– can hold incredible value and power.

Title: “How to create real sustainability in your business and career” Episode 234 Guest: Ashley Miles, founder of Franklyn West
When you burn the candle at both ends, eventually you end up depleting yourself. Your tank runs dry and you have no energy left to refuel. It feels terrible. It can also directly impact your ability to build and sustain the influence you need to accomplish your bigger goals. This week’s guest provides an interesting take on the topic which she approaches from the standpoint of sustainability!
COLLABORATION SERIES WITH THE SOUTHERN COTERIE: This conversation is part of my second official collaboration series with The Southern C! Be sure to follow me and The Southern C on Instagram for more about the series and the amazing network of talented entrepreneurs and founders who make up The Southern C!
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Self-described former workaholic Ashley Miles is the founder of Franklyn West, an on demand consulting firm she created during covid in response to a dramatically changing work environment. Seeing an opportunity, she developed what she refers to as “a Swiss Army Knife” approach to quickly addressing business challenges by leveraging her network as outside talent who can help employees and senior leaders navigate change. The principles she uses to help business create a sustainable, adaptable existence, also apply as we think about the best ways to manage ourselves— specifically our energy and our time. Prior to creating Franklyn West, Ashley served as the Global Chief Business Officer at Thrive Global, reporting directly to Founder and CEO Arianna Huffington, leading worldwide sales, marketing and business operations. Before that, she spent more than six years building and scaling Refinery29, a leading digital media and entertainment company for women.
KEY TOPICS: How and why Ashley created Franklyn West, and the problem she set out to solve. How Ashley thinks about influence as she’s built a network that ultimately provides on demand talent to Franklyn West clients. Why Ashley looks at the dramatically shifting nature of work as an opportunity for businesses and individuals alike. How to manage your internal staff when you bring in outside help. Ashley explains why a “pivotal power agenda growth plan” matters. How Ashely’s approach to identifying business “superpowers” also applies to helping individuals find their own. Ashley’s advice for building and expanding your network, and why it’s important to have a plan in mind. How giving back fits into a personal sustainability strategy. Ashley’s Five Filters for creating a sustainable life that prioritizes balance and alignment. Ashley’s advice for how you can create a “Hot List” to control your checklist.
QUOTE: “You are who you surround yourself with. When you surround yourself with people who inspire you, who show up with not only great skills and success, but with values and integrity, that’s who you become.” — Ashley Miles

| 233. How embracing creativity helps you navigate change in career and life! with guest Dana Cowin | 24 Feb 2023 | 00:54:27 | |
SHOW NOTES Title: “How embracing creativity can help you navigate change in career and life!” Episode 233 What should I do next? Ever reach that point in your career and thought to yourself, “I need to make a big change, but I have no idea what’s next?” Maybe you’re apprehensive or afraid of making a big pivot and wonder, “what if this doesn’t work out? What then?” Or maybe, you already have a passion or side hustle that you are thinking about turning into a business, but you’re not sure about how to go about taking that risk?
These questions are the ones I receive most often from women who are navigating pivots (and often rethinking or re-envisioning) life and career. It’s one of my favorite topics because the answer lies entirely in the person asking. But the path to figuring out what makes sense for her, of finding her “through line” and connecting the dots in ways that are unique to her, is an act of creativity itself.
This week’s guest could reasonably be referred to as a queen of all things creative. Her voracious curiosity for life and everything in it fuels that curiosity! It’s how she thinks about and has used creativity to approach her own career juncture points — including those that she’s tackled most recently. She makes a strong case for why embracing creativity for problem solving is so vital and important. It’s also a key to how she’s differentiated herself and built tremendous influence in the process.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Dana Cowin is a highly respective, accomplished and influential voice in the food, beverage, and lifestyle space. Her 20 years at the helm of Food and Wine Magazine shaped the way we think about food and wine today. During Dana’s tenure at F&W, she elevated the role of chefs and food personalities, changing the public’s understanding and appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes in some of the most renowned and delicious dining establishments. She literally helped to create the notion of celebrity chef. She also expanded F&W’s coverage beyond more traditional French and Italian fare by introducing readers to a more diverse range of cuisines from Africa, Asia and Latin America. She also has helped to create more awareness around sustainability and ethical sourcing, as well as more awareness about food waste. Dana and I talk about her journey, and specifically how someone without culinary expertise landed in the top job at Food and Wine in the first place! More recently, she has reimagined her influence and platform through “Speaking Broadly” which takes both zine and podcast forms.
COLLABORATION SERIES WITH THE SOUTHERN COTERIE: This conversation kicks off my second official collaboration series with The Southern C! Be sure to follow me and The Southern C on Instagram for more about the series and the amazing network of talented entrepreneurs and founders who make up The Southern C!
KEY TOPICS EPISODE 233: How Dana became the editor-in-chief of Food & Wine, when culinary expertise was not her top skill! How Dana approached figuring out what was next after two decades at food and wine. The power of creativity and how we can spark it in our own lives and careers. Why Dana launched “Speaking Broadly” in both podcast and zine formats, and her advice for you if you’re thinking about starting a podcast or zine of your own. How Dana thinks about influence, and how she’s using the tremendous influence she’s built over her career. How Dana thinks about mentorship and why it’s been a lifelong passion of hers, and her advice for the best ways to pursue the mentor who is right for you.
There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your reaction and feedback. How do you incorporate creativity into your life? What are your favorite practices? | How changing your perception can change your reality! Episode 231 | 10 Feb 2023 | 00:49:34
SHOW NOTES Episode 231: TITLE: “How changing your perception can change your reality!” GUEST: CHRISTINA EANES
Have you ever totally misread a situation? Maybe it was one where you were so convinced that what you thought was happening was happening, but in fact your perception was completely off? Maybe you missed some critical element in a conversation or perhaps your focus was geared too internally on your own emotion causing you to miss some critical clues?
We’ve all been there. Some of us more times than we might like to admit!
But perception, when it’s faulty, can also impact our ability to build influence. Here’s why: you might mistakenly misinterpret the motives of others which can lead to misunderstanding and can impact your ability to build a rapport; or you might not fully appreciate your own value which can impact your confidence and ultimately undermine your ability to build influence. Additionally, faulty perceptions can also result in bias which can drive the wrong outcomes and can impact the quality of relationships. Why does this happen? And, how can we train ourselves to get better at learning to read and decipher those important clues?
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Christina Eanes is a former FBI violent crime analyst turned author, career coach, professional speaker, and podcast host. Her fascinating career has helped her develop a deeper understanding of how we can train ourselves to be more perceptive. Christina shares what she has learned about building the skills needed to help decipher clues that can be tricky and difficult to read. I actually joined Christina on an episode of her podcast which is called “Quit Bleeping Around” and we talked about what I’ve learned about influence and how we can build it. You can find that conversation in the links below. It’s a good one because it compliments what we talk about here.
KEY TOPICS EPISODE 231: How our perceptions create our reality. The role of mindset related to our perceptions. The value of setting intentions before you are called to the stage or asked to comment. Why Christina has found escape rooms to be a particularly useful teaching tool and what we can learn about ourselves and others from using them. Why Christina uses an accountability approach and how she developed that approach. The impact of managing energy v. managing time. Why questioning and reflecting on your thinking, especially in conflict situations, can be a helpful exercise to test your perceptions especially about others’ motives, as well as our own. One of Christina’s tips for how to weather a setback, ask yourself, “What gift is this (setback, failure, or obstacle) bringing me?”
There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Have you ever misread a situation only to find out later — maybe after a bridge has been burned, that you misread it? I’d love to hear about what you learned, and how this week’s episode relates to what you experienced. Send me an email: info@shesaid.media or you can reach via the contact link below. | How to create more productive, collaborative relationships – even with those you can’t stand! (Episode 230) | 03 Feb 2023 | 00:46:25
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to create more productive, collaborative relationships at work and at home” Episode 230 Guest: Dr. Deb Mashek, author “Collabor(h)ate: How to build incredible collaborative relationships at work, even if you’d rather work alone” THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Collaboration is a good thing, right? So why is it so difficult to collaborate, especially with those who have a different point of view, or just rub us the wrong way? If we’re honest, it can be very hard to navigate those differences, and to do so in a way that yields the most constructive and potentially innovative results, while at the same time maintaining some semblance of a personal relationship. This challenge lies at the heart of what it often means to build and sustain influence in our lives and careers. So what can you do when you’re forced to collaborate with someone you simply cannot stand? What then? That’s the topic of this week’s conversation. ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Dr. Deb Mashek joins me to discuss her work and her newly released book ““Collabor(h)ate: How to build incredible collaborative relationships at work, even if you’d rather work alone.” Named one of the top 35 women in Higher Education by Diverse Issues in Higher Education, Deb’s is an experienced business advisor, professor, higher education administrator and national nonprofit executive, having served as the first Executive Director of the Heterodox Academy. She is also the founder of Myco Consulting, LLC where she “helps businesses navigate the relationship headwinds that tank timelines, bottom lines, and well-being.” Deb applies “relationship theory to understand and improve how individuals relate to others and to help people achieve together that which cannot be achieved alone.” KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: Why we need collaboration and the value it brings to projects and teams. Why we aren’t better at collaborating, why the problem is getting worse, and what we can do to develop these skills. Why avoiding conflict is actually one of the worst things we can do. How to rebuild a relationship where trust and credibility have been lost. How Deb’s childhood informed her passion for collaboration and her career journey.
Whether you are collaborating in the workplace, in your own business, at home, at school or maybe all of the above, Deb’s tips and perspective can help make these interactions less painful and ultimately much more productive. Deb gives us so much to think about related to how we approach collaboration, and she shares some important ways we can draw out the most creative, innovative thinking from diverse groups. There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Are there any adjustments you might make in tackling your own challenging collaborations? SHOW NOTES Title: Is perfection holding you back? Understanding the link between fear and perfection (and what to do about it!) Episode 229 Guest: solo THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: The past few weeks on She Said/She Said Podcast we’ve talked about making our goals stickier, building our digital brands, and communicating our value. All of these things can be very important to building our credibility and also our influence. But there is often a roadblock we haven’t discussed that can sit in our path when we consider doing these things. It can also be an obstacle to our telling our most authentic and powerful stories, and taking the risk to do so. It’s perfection, and the fear and self-doubt that often underpin it. This week, I’m tackling this topic, along with how to recognize the signs and some ways to stop perfectionistic tendencies from fueling self-doubt.
ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: I’m solo this week, which gives me a chance to share my own perspective and experience with perfection, and some of the ways I work to manage it. For me, perfectionism never fully leaves me. I think that can be true for many people who struggle with perfectionism. But, learning to understanding that, and learning to do a better job of recognizing the signs can be the key to truly managing it. Just because you experience perfectionism doesn’t mean it has to hold you back!
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: How perfectionism can impact our ability to build our strongest brand and tell our most impactful and authentic stories Why I don’t think perfection ever completely leaves you Two often overlooked signs of perfection: fear and procrastination The dangers of over-preparation How “doing” builds confidence, and can help counteract perfectionism 5 specific tips for keeping perfectionism in check:

| Why doing great work just isn’t enough. You need to speak up! Episode 228 | 20 Jan 2023 | 00:54:25 | |
SHOW NOTES: Title: Why doing great work just isn’t enough! You need to speak up! Episode 228 Guest: Dr. Laura Camacho, communications coach, author, and host of “Speak Up with Laura” podcast THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Tell me if this sounds anything like you: You put your head down and work, work, work. Folks often tell you, “you are the hardest worker we have on this team!” But, all that work, work, work hasn’t necessarily led to big promotions for you. What gives? Or, maybe that big idea that the team decided to pursue was actually yours, but you find you aren’t getting any credit for it. What could you have done differently? Or, maybe you were laid off, and your boss explained that it was because the company wasn’t clear what you actually do all day and how you add value. All of these problems may boil down to how effectively you are communicating not just the work itself, but the value you are providing, and how you are able to think about and communicate your value not only to the team, but more broadly. If you are a regular listener to She Said/She Said Podcast, you know that a particularly important dimension needed to build and sustain influence is story. The power of story applies in how we think about our value and how we communicate it, and how it helps us create more visibility for the value we are already providing. Today’s conversation dives into this topic and will give you lots to think about and some great tools for communicating your value so that you can build more visibility, and ultimately more influence! This Episode is also a great build on last week’s Episode 227 where we focused on building a digital brand with Be The Brand Founder Madeline Fetterly. There is so much synergy between Laura’s area of focus and my own that we decided to do a podcast exchange! Laura joins me here in this week’s Episode 228, and I’ll be joining her on “Speak Up with Laura” in a few weeks! KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: The link between effective communications and influence Increasing your visibility: how to do that effectively, and why it matters Visibility as a differentiator The impact of using the right (or wrong) language Introverts and extroverts and how each processes information differently Laura’s origin story Why the advice to “just speak up more” isn’t particularly good advice for building credibility and influence. Beware “overthinking” when someone asks for your view How to avoid “Self-sabotaging language” The role of emotion and creating intention around it There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode. I know you’re going to love it, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Please be sure to let me know what struck you in this conversation? I’d love to hear. | How to stop missing out on career opportunities by creating a strong digital brand! (Episode 227) | 13 Jan 2023 | 00:49:10
SHOW NOTES: Title: How to stop missing out on career opportunities by creating a strong digital brand! Episode 227 Guest: Madeline Fetterly, Founder/CEO, Be The Brand Collective THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Building a personal brand and getting noticed for your work takes more than just “doing the work and doing it well.” While that’s important, one way to supercharge awareness of your potential is to invest in a digital strategy, and not just use social media to post photos of your dog (even though I’m sure she or he is very cute). As you think about the best ways to use the array of social media tools available, it can be confusing and overwhelming! How is the best way to get started tweaking your digital brand? Which platforms work best for which purposes? How often (and where) should you post for maximum impact? What if it all feels just too much, and like you are bragging? ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: We’re tackling all those questions and lots more with digital branding strategy pro Madeline Fetterly, the founder and CEO of Washington, DC-based Be The Brand Collective. Madeline’s advice in this episode will help you demystify the array of possibilities, while also helping you avoid some common pitfalls as you think about what to post, when and where, and also how to set some helpful goals to determine how your posting and sharing is going. Madeline’s original inspiration for Be The Brand grew from seeing incredibly accomplished, high-profile women missing out on opportunities because they failed to invest in their digital brands, or weren’t comfortable using and leveraging social media to promote their work. KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: Who needs a digital strategy and why? What are some initial considerations when trying to decide where to invest in your digital brand? How to demystify the different platforms and tools Who are you trying to reach or influence? How can you make your strategy sustainable? How you can align your digital strategy with other goals How to ensure that you are creating an authentic, multidimensional digital brand that truly reflects you How to get the best results when working with a third party or consultant to developing your brand What’s the best balance between creating original content v. sharing others’ content? How you can use social media “prompts” to inspire your content The biggest mistake Madeline sees people make Why your story and how you craft it for your digital brand matters Best practice: Someone visiting your website or landing page should get a good sense of who you are in 3-4 scrolls. Key Quote: “Nobody will start talking about you unless you start talking about you. So you have to be an anchor to position your work.” — Madeline Fetterly There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode. I know you’re going to love it, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Please be sure to let me know what struck you in this conversation? I’d love to hear. | BONUS “How to create more trust with your customer or client, and turn that trust into influence! ” (Episode 225) | 27 Dec 2022 | 01:00:06
SHOW NOTES TITLE: “How to create more trust with your customer or client, and turn that trust into influence! ” (Episode 225) BONUS EPISODE: 225 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: One of the most important components for building a real connection and relationship with your customer or client requires that you establish credibility and trust — something that is also important for building and sustaining influence. That means: doing what we say we’ll do, being honest, being who we really are, standing by our products, and doing our best to do the right thing where others — especially those we want to build some type of relationship with — are concerned. When we allow these pillars to guide us, we also increase –exponentially– the opportunity for building both trust and real influence with our intended client or customer, our employees, our partner or spouse, our children, and our neighbors.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: This week’s conversation is a little holiday bonus — I’ve repackaged a conversation from earlier this year with BURU Founder Morgan Hutchinson. Morgan and I recorded this conversation as part of She Said/She Said Podcast’s collaboration with The Southern Coterie in 2022.
She Said/She Said Podcast will be the official podcast sponsor again in 2023, and I’m so excited about the incredible content that we’re working on for you as part of that!
As I work on those plans, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to share one of my favorite conversations from last year’s Summit.
Morgan is the founder and chief designer of Shop BURU. You’ll find her on Instagram @ShopBuru, and if you are looking for great fashion inspiration and incredible items, look no further!
BURU is a women’s clothing line made primarily in Morgan’s factory in downtown Los Angeles, CA. Together with Brett Hutchinson — Morgan’s cofounder, business partner, and husband — Morgan has built a unique and innovative brand with a very clear view of: who her customer is, what she’s concerned about, and how she’ll help her customer solve a problem.
As a mother of three young kids, Morgan’s journey into motherhood provided the initial inspiration for the BURU brand. In fact, breastfeeding — specifically — inspired the initial designs, but she’s continued to evolve the brand as her life and motherhood journey have evolved.
I had a great time hosting Morgan for a BURU pop up for a few friends just before Thanksgiving — something I hope will become a regular tradition because it was the perfect way to pick up a few great holiday items to complete holiday outfits!
Morgan focuses on establishing a high level of trust with her customer. You see that in her marketing efforts, especially on Instagram and on her blog, and you’ll feel that in today’s conversation. There’s also a level of vulnerability she shares with her customer and that she shares with me and ultimately with you as you listen.
KEY TOPICS IN THE CONVERSATION: TRUST: Morgan and I talk about what creating trust with your customer (or potential client) looks like.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP JOURNEY: How her earlier experience starting her previous company “Passport Panties” informed how she and her husband Brett created BURU.
PARTNERSHIP: We talk about why Morgan and Brett make good partners and what each brings to the table.
FUNDING YOUR BUSINESS: We talk about why the choice she and Brett made to bootstrap BURU has been an important factor for balancing family, work and life. This is a really fascinating part of the conversation, and if you are trying to build a product-based business you won’t want to miss this!
MENTAL HEALTH: Morgan is incredibly candid in our conversation and talks with me about her struggle with bipolar disorder. I was particularly struck by this part of the conversation and think you will be too because it further underscores the importance of showing vulnerability in building trust with her customer. As she tells us, she shares her story to give others who are struggling hope, while also helping to change the stigma associated with mental illness. If you or someone you love or care about is struggling, I’ve included some helpful links below. MORGAN’S BEST MOM TIPS: Morgan shares a couple of her favorite tips for both prioritizing and for traveling with little people!
COLLABORATION SERIES WITH THE SOUTHERN COTERIE: I recorded this conversation as part of our She Said/She Said Podcast / The Southern Coterie Collaboration in 2022. If you missed any part of this collaboration, I hope you’ll go back and listen. We’ve featured some amazing women (including Morgan) who are part of the Southern C network. They’ve included: fashion designer Lela Rose, business coach Sallie Holder, designer Mignonne Gavigan, Red Clay hot sauce CEO Molly Fienning, Partake Food CEO Denise Woodard, and Sandra Campos . We’re gearing up for another amazing lineup in 2023! If you are interested in learning more about The Southern Coterie and The Southern C Summit 2023 – Feb. 1-3, 2023, click here.

| 224. Two ways to battle overwhelm and create more focus! | 16 Dec 2022 | 00:13:46 | |
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to Battle Overwhelm and Regain Focus” – EPISODE 224 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Feeling a bit overwhelmed and losing focus especially around the holidays? This week I’m sharing my two favorite, incredibly easy self-management tips that can help you pull up and get back on track. How does this relate to influence? How we invest in ourselves is a key component for building influence. That also includes investing in those strategies that help us stay focused, but that also help us get back on track when things simply get to be too much. Even when we plan carefully, this still happens. It can be helpful to have some quick fix strategies we can use until we have a chance to develop longer term ones.
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: TACKLING “OPEN LOOPS”: Open loops can leave you overwhelmed and can work against your ability to focus. In the same way that your brain gets stuck on a particular refrain in a song or when you feel compelled to finish a Netflix series (even one that you don’t love because you just have to get to the end), your open tasks, to do’s, and projects can create the same type of mental loop. Without some process for corralling all of those things, your brain will operate in an often exhausting mental spiral that causes it to use more energy “looping” than actually solving the problem or dealing with the item on your list. HOW TO QUICKLY AND EASILY CLOSE OPEN LOOPS! This is so easy you will not believe how well it works! BOOK: “Getting Things Done” by David Allen [Check out all my book recs on this Amazon List] SCHEDULE A DATE WITH YOURSELF: Ideally after you have captured your “open loops.” Ideally, this is scheduled and something that will help your brain reset and regain focus. BOOK: “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron [Check out all my book recs on this Amazon List]
Friend, these are quick fixes, but if you are anything like me, sometimes it’s the quick and easy things that you need to hit the reset button and get youself back on track. If you try these, let me know how they work for you. And, if you have other tips, please share. I’d love to hear what works for you! | Five ways to get yourself booked on a podcast, while also building your brand and your influence! (Episode 223) | 09 Dec 2022 | 00:17:26
Title: Five ways to get yourself booked on a podcast, and how doing so can help build your brand and your influence! (Episode 223) THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Developing your expertise — and your credibility around it — is an important part of building influence. But equally important is finding opportunities where you can share that perspective in ways that help others and contribute to the broader discussion in some way. The incredible growth in podcasts presents endless opportunities for you to showcase your knowledge and expertise on this growing medium, but getting booked on top-rated podcasts requires that you do a few things first. This week, I’m sharing five tips for getting yourself booked on a podcast, and how doing so can help build your band and your influence. ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: I’m solo this week! WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: In this week’s episode, I’m drawing from countless examples of pitches — the good and the less good, and sharing what will get your pitch moved to the top of the stack! I’m also sharing some perspective that will make you both a desirable guest, while also helping you build a connection with the host.
Ultimately, all of these tips boil down to one key theme: aligning what you want to accomplish with the goals of a podcast, but always doing so with an eye toward using what you know to add value to someone else. When your pitch is oriented to help the host’s audience v. just focusing on how amazing your own story is (even when that is the case, as I’m sure it is), it will differentiate you and your pitch. Your personal story and your ability to use it to add value are not mutually exclusive! If you have questions or want to be considered as a guest on She Said/She Said Podcast in 2023, I’d love to hear from you! You can reach me via the link below or here: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com. You can also share your thoughts or direct message me on social media. You’ll find me most often on Instagram, Linked In, and Facebook. Looking for more She Said/She Said? | “How to build grit & entrepreneurial muscle with “failure rich” jobs! – Episode 222 | 02 Dec 2022 | 00:47:51
SHOW NOTES Title: “How to build grit & entrepreneurial muscle with “failure rich” jobs! Episode 222 Guest: Julie Schechter THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Connection is an important and powerful component needed to build influence, but our lives are incredibly busy. We feel stretched — especially during the holidays. We can have the best of intentions about sending a gift or card, but can’t seem to find the time. Many of us are drifting apart from those who are important to us. It was that problem — and concern about a broader loneliness epidemic — that inspired this week’s guest — ballet dancer and lawyer turned entrepreneur Julie Schechter. This week’s episode is about Julie’s journey and her repeated career pivots. Her advice is incredibly valuable whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur or just looking to challenge yourself in a new way. ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Julie Schechter is the founder of Small Packages, and — soon to launch — Present App. Her entrepreneurial journey was inspired by a challenge she felt personally, and that she also saw others struggling with. But, the path she took to arrive at starting Small Packages was a less than linear one. From mastering in dance in college to pursuing a professional ballet career to AmeriCorps to Harvard Law School, to entrepreneurship — Julie’s story is fascinating!
KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE: THE POWER OF DIFFERENTATION: Julie talks about how her unique path actually created differentation for her in applying to Harvard Law School. Think — Elle Woods from “Legally Blonde” but without without the scented resume.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR STORY AND CONNECTIVE THREADS: Julie talks about the connective thread that ties her experience and resume and the particular skill that has proven most valuable to her in all of her career junctures including her more recent experiences as a founder and entrepreneur.
HOW TO PULL THE PLUG ON SOMETHING YOU LOVE THAT ISN’T WORKING: This is an incredibly difficult thing to do as an entrepreneur, and Julie shares her thoughts.
PICKING PARTNERS & CO-FOUNDERS: Julie shares her process, but also a particularly important piece of advice for having a “what if it doesn’t work out plan.”
THE VALUE OF ‘FAILURE RICH’ JOBS: and how they can help you build grit that is essential for entrepreneurship.
THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES ABOUT FAILURE: Julie talks about how this particular skill — which is so critical for building influence — is also especially critical for entrepreneurs in a way that is different from other jobs. Find out why!
There is so much great advice and perspective in this episode. I know you’re going to love it, and I’m excited to hear your feedback. Please be sure to let me know what struck you in this conversation? I’d love to hear. You can reach via the link in the show notes which you’ll find here in Episode 222: shesaidshesaidpodcast.com .

| BONUS! Why your investment in self-care is about more than YOU! Episode 221 | 25 Nov 2022 | 00:57:07 | |
SHOW NOTES BONUS Ep 221 with author Kari Kampakis TITLE: BONUS! Why your investment in self-care is about more than YOU! Episode 221
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: We get so many mixed messages about self-care. For many of us, even doing the minimum amount can leave us feeling guilty. I often find the topic seems to be one of extremes. Taken too far self-care can legitimately become “selfish,” but when we don’t pause and take the time to engage in an adequate amount of self-care, it means we’re not doing what we need to refuel in order to be the women and people we hope to be, and to have the impact we hope we can have. Holidays are often the most challenging and can leave us feeling incredibly depleted, guilt-ridden, or BOTH. That’s why I think today’s conversation is so important and will resonate with YOU. It’s also why I wanted to share this encore episode while I’m taking a break this week to recharge a bit and spend more time with my family.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: My guest is Kari Kampakis. She is a best selling, award winning author and blogger and one of my favorite repeat guests here at She Said/She Said Podcast.
In this encore BONUS Episode Kari joins us today to talk about her latest book — her fourth and my personal favorite of Kari’s so far. The book is called “More than a mom: How prioritizing your wellness helps you (and your family) thrive.”
Kari has a way of articulating the challenges of modern motherhood that is grounded, practical, and spiritual. She often provides just the perspective that I need when I’m facing a parenting challenge, and I know many of her readers and followers feel the same.
Even if you are not in the throws and joys of motherhood — or maybe even if motherhood isn’t part of your journey — I know you’ll find much to love and appreciate about Kari’s message. It’s an important one and not just for moms.
HOW SELF-CARE RELATES TO INFLUENCE: Investing in ourselves is part of building and sustaining influence. That’s because it’s an essential part of how we become the people we want to become. It takes effort, work, and self reflection. It also reminds me of a personal mantra of mine: “you get what you give.” That concept applies to ourselves as well as to others. When we starve ourselves for the recharge and fuel we need, we’re less able to do all of the amazing things we hope and dream about accomplishing.
KEY TOPICS:
PRIORITIZING OUR OWN SELF-CARE INCREASES THE POSITIVE IMPACT WE HAVE ON OTHERS: Kari talks about several dimensions of this that I think you’ll really appreciate.
TAMING THE TENDENCY TO MULTI-TASK: Kari talks about how she tames this Type-A tendency, while channeling her mental energy in ways that enable her to have a bigger impact
WHY KARI SAYS BUILDING OUR NETWORKS IS AN IMPORTANT FORM OF SELF CARE: I love how Kari’s message about creating and tending our networks. Investing in our relationships is a key dimension needed to build and sustain influence in our lives and careers.
HOW AND WHY KARI THINKS ABOUT HER LIFE AND CAREER IN SEASONS
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO LEARN TO “MOTHER OURSELVES”
KARI’S ADVICE FOR HOW TO AVOID GETTING SUCKED INTO DIFFERENT DEMANDS WHEN SHE’S MADE A COMMITMENT TO HERSELF
HOW KARI CREATED A BUSINESS OUT OF A PASSION FOR BLOGGING: You can find even more about her personal journey in our earlier conversation back in Episode 116 KARI KAMPAKIS. Wherever you are in your journey, I hope you find as much value from this conversation with Kari as I did, and I hope you’ll make the time to read Kari’s new book “More Than A MOM: How prioritizing your wellness helps you (and your family) thrive.” It’s terrific! TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK? I’d love YOUR feedback! You can DM me on Instagram @LauraCoxKaplan or use the website contact link: she said/she said podcast.com And, please consider leaving a review of the show wherever you are listening to this podcast. | How to boost your holiday mood using gratitude & the power of story! Episode 220 | 19 Nov 2022 | 00:16:16
Title: How to boost your holiday mood using gratitude and the power of story! Episode 220
THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: We often put so much pressure on ourselves to create the perfect holiday experiences. That added stress can leave us depleted, overstretched, and — if we aren’t careful — it can put our mental health at risk. We can’t fully eliminate stress (nor would we want to), but we can engage in a few strategies that I find particularly helpful. These things also tie into a couple of the most important dimensions needed for building and sustaining influence that I talked about back in Episode 215. Please be sure to check out that episode if you missed it! I’m releasing this week’s episode a few days before Thanksgiving. If you are anything like me, you are already on overdrive! All the more reason to make sure you have some additional tools and perspective in mind as you manage through holiday stress. This episode is short and a good one to listen to while you are running your errands, or taking a few minutes for yourself.
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: I’m solo this week!
KEY TOPICS: THE INFLUENCE / MENTAL HEALTH CONNECTION REFRAMING OUR STORIES: Why we can’t overlook the more difficult ones, and why they matter so much. HOW THE FIRST THANKSGIVING was actually a celebration of survival. GRATITUDE LISTS ARE GREAT, but “other praising” may yield more value! GRATITUDE, “OTHER PRAISING,” AND CONNECTION GETTING TACTICAL WITH “OTHER PRAISING”
LINKS MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE: she said/she said podcast Episode 205 with Dr. Samantha Boardman “Everyday Vitality: Turning Stress Into Strength” by Samantha Boardman Lydia Menzies Holiday Market and Supper Club The Southern Bungalow Candle Company Friend, I’m truly grateful for you — not just at Thanksgiving, but all year long! | Perfect? Or happy? Why perfectionism sucks the life & happiness out of YOU (Episode 219) | 11 Nov 2022 | 00:33:12
Episode 219 (part 2 of 2) Title: Perfect? Or happy? Why perfection can suck the life and happiness right out of you Guest: Karith Foster THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Shifting our mindset, and reframing the stories we tell ourselves is critical for building and sustaining influence. When we shift how we think about our circumstances, or maybe how we evaluate whether to take risks, the outcome — win or lose — can look very different. When we hold ourselves to a standard of perfection, we are likely to: shy away from risks that are more likely to lead to setback before they lead to achievement; second guess our gut instincts because we are worried of how we might be perceived (and that we will fail); and we will always feel “less than” because we are holding ourselves to a standard that isn’t ever achievable. Even when we understand how devastating perfectionism can be, it can be a beast to wrestle with! This week’s guest shares her story and her perspective on how to tame the beast of perfection. She knows, because she too has been there!
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: This is Part 2 of my 2 part conversation with comedian, author and entrepreneur Karith Foster. We jump right in where we left off in Part 1, Episode 218. If you missed part 1, please click here.
KEY TOPICS in PART 2: Karith’s book: “You can be Perfect or You can be Happy: How to Let Go, Worry Less, and Enjoy Life!” How Karith’s infant daughter almost died, and how that story led to Karith’s book title Why you need to ask for what you want (and why specificity counts!) The power of story — There are so many lessons and take aways from this two part conversation with Karith, including so many ways that her stories reflect aspects of how she has (and how we can) build and sustain influence in our lives. I’ll also be sharing a few more on social media over the course of this week — so please be sure to follow me on Instagram, Linked In , Facebook or find all of our She Said/She Said products and content here!
Friend, I hope you found this investment of your time worthwhile, and I’d love to hear your feedback on this or any of our She Said/She Said Podcast episodes. | How to say “yes,” use humor, and keep perfection in check! Episode 218 | 05 Nov 2022 | 00:48:30
Show Notes Episode 218 Part 1 of 2 Guest: Karith Foster Title: How to say “yes,” use humor, and keep perfection in check THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Ever have self-doubt and perfectionist tendencies keep you from saying yes? Yes to the big assignment, yes to the new, “stretch” job, or yes to the new client because you’ve convinced yourself they will say “no” before you even bother to make your pitch? We essentially talk ourselves out of even trying because we are afraid we might fail. Does any of this sound familiar? This week, we’re tackling the importance of overcoming self-doubt and fear of failure in order to say “yes” to those stretch goals and big opportunities, even when we may not (and frankly shouldn’t) have all the answers up front! But, the story doesn’t end there. What happens when saying “yes” holds some complications that make it more challenging than we could ever have imagined? What then? This week’s guest is our “Sherpa” for how to make sense of an incredibly difficult experience. How to use humor, reframe the story (and the pain) into something that can actually lead us closer to where we are ultimately supposed to be, and how that process is incredibly important for building our influence in a way that can also have a real and powerful impact for ourselves and for others. THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Karith Foster is a reformed stand up comedian and journalist who found a way to make humor a transferable skill. Her company Inversity Solutions was born out of an experience that forced her to take a good, hard look at what was most important and how she could use her talents to help others. Her incredible resume includes: working for Barbara Walters in the early days of The View, managing Human Resources at Estée Lauder, countless gigs in television, rapid and film, and working as on air talent for Don Imus at Imus in the Morning. Today’s she’s the founder of her company “Inversity Solutions,” which is taking a different approach to diversity training and to bringing people together. Karith has written two books including her latest: “You can be perfect or you can be happy: how to let go, worry less, and enjoy life.”
KEY TOPICS in Part 1, Episode 218: “INVERSITY”: what it means and why words matter in helping us find common ground, and why Karith built her company on this concept. SAYING ‘YES’: What Karith learned about missed opportunity, and how it propelled her into her most challenging job. USING HUMOR: Is humor a good choice for everyone? What if you just aren’t that funny? HOW HUMOR BECAME A ‘TRANSFERABLE SKILL’ for Karith. WORKING FOR DON IMUS: Karith tells the story of how she came to work for the late Don Imus. In her telling of the story, she shares the racially offensive language used by both Don Imus and Bernard McGirk in a 2007 exchange about the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team. Neither Karith nor I condone this language, but we agreed that it was important to include as context for her story, and how the experience impacted the way she now thinks about her work at Inversity Solutions. NEXT WEEK: I’ll share Part 2 of my conversation with Karith in Episode 219, and we’ll dive into her terrific book: “You can be perfect or you can be happy: how to let go, worry less, and enjoy life!” Please let me know what you thought of the episode! And, please share some love in the form of a review! Reviews and feedback help me improve our content and ultimately help me give YOU a better product week over week. And, it’s what FRIENDS do! | “Seven ways to harness your fear through story” – Episode 217 | 29 Oct 2022 | 00:20:05
Title: “Seven ways to harness your fear using the power of story,” Episode 217 THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: Fear can be crippling when we don’t understand it, or haven’t learned the best ways to manage it. While your particular fears may differ from mine, there is one important dimension that aligns us. It also happens to be one of the key dimensions that helps us build and sustain influence. Can you guess what that is? It’s story. Specifically, the stories we tell ourselves about those things that provoke or trigger our fear. In this special “Halloween Episode” of She Said/She Said Podcast, we’re digging into the connection between fear, influence, and story and drawing great perspective from guests on this podcast. I share seven tips (summarized in brief below) that can help you understand and tame your fear while simultaneously building your influence.
KEY TOPICS: Why Story Is Such A Powerful Part Of Fear Seven Tips For Taming Fear
Famous Quotes from the Episode: “You have the power over your mind— not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” — Marcus Aurelius “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” — Hamlet, Act II, Scene 2. “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing that you think you cannot do.” — Eleanore Roosevelt
We all feel fear. How we respond to it often means the difference between using it to propel us toward our goals, or allowing it to keep us stuck. The better equipped we are to understand and manage our fear, the more we can use it to help us build and sustain influence. Let me know what you thought of the episode! DM me @lauraCoxKaplan on Instagram, Linked In or Facebook — I’d love to hear from you! And, please be sure to leave a review on iTunes or wherever you are listening. Reviews help me improve and create even better content to meet you right where you are on your journey! So, leaving a review is a good investment in both She Said/She Said Podcast and in YOURSELF!

| How a problem solving framework for lawyers can help YOU build more influence! Episode 216 | 22 Oct 2022 | 00:45:47 | |
Episode 216: “How a problem solving framework for lawyers can help YOU build more influence!” THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: There is tremendous value in developing and fine tuning problem solving skills. What might surprise you is how a problem solving framework developed for law school students can help you build stronger connections with others, while also boosting your personal influence!
THIS WEEK’S GUEST: This week’s guest is actually a repeat guest — her name is Kim Wehle. She is a lawyer, author, and law professor at the University of Baltimore. Her latest book is called “How to Think Like a Lawyer — and WHY: a common sense guide to everyday dilemmas.” In the book and in this conversation, Kim shares a methodlogy she developed for her law students that has problem solving applicability well beyond Kim’s classroom, and is one she uses in her own life including with her four daughters.
What I especially love about this conversation is that the topic goes well beyond problem solving. It’s really about how to create a different perspective in approaching challenging situations in our lives. That might include: a career pivot, preparing for a difficult or contentious conversation, trying to find common ground on some issue or topic, navigating the political minefield that we increasingly have to navigate with friends and loved ones, or in Kim’s case, even navigating a difficult divorce.
KEY TOPICS:
CURIOSITY & A GROWTH MINDSET: Kim’s approach helps us to reject an “us v. them” approach and learn to engage our curiosity to develop a problem solving orientation. It’s also a great example of how we can deploy a growth mindset. [If you haven’t read Stanford Professor Carol Dweck’s fabulous book “Mindset” add it to your list!]
KIM’S “BICAT” DECISION MAKING FRAMEWORK: break it down, identify your values, collect knowledge, analyze both sides (or all sides), and tolerate.
HOW KIM’S APPROACH CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE BETTER OUTCOMES…. And might even save your time!
HOW KIM’S APPROACH CAN HELP YOU BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND EXPAND YOUR NETWORK

SHOW NOTES Episode 215: “Three ways to build influence needed to THRIVE” THIS WEEK’S TOPIC: This week’s topic was inspired by a thought-provoking conference I attended last week that was hosted by The Policy Circle. The theme of the conference was building thriving communities. As I reflected on the topic, I thought about how clearly it aligns with how we talk about INFLUENCE on She Said/She Said Podcast. Using that inspiration, this week’s podcast focuses on three ways you can build influence in a way that helps YOU to thrive. As I prepared for this week, I went back and pulled a few key episodes that illustrate dimensions of this around three key areas that illustrate this connection. I’ve included those links below. I’d love to know how you think about the link between influence and thriving! Please share your thoughts with me. THIS WEEK’S GUEST: I’m solo this week, but so much of the perspective I share comes as a result of so many women and men who have shaped my thinking on this topic, including so many guests on She Said/She Said Podcast! KEY TOPICS IN EPISODE 215: Don’t underestimate the smaller habits and practices that contribute to building influence. The connection between INFLUENCE and THRIVING. 3 Key Areas for building influence that also help you to THRIVE:
This episode also compliments a LIVE podcast I recorded last week with my friend and the woman who encouraged me to start a podcast — The Policy Circle co-founder and host of Trust Your Voice Podcast Sylvie Legere. In my conversation with Sylvie we dig a little deeper into the topic, so be sure to check that out on Trust Your Voice (link below) as well!
