358. Why Intention is your most important brand differentiator with guest Caroline Turnipseed

vendredi 6 mars 2026Duration 38:57

SHOW NOTES

358: How Selectivity and Intention Build Standout Brands

Guest: Caroline Turnipseed, Founder of CWT Consulting

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

It’s easy to confuse activity with intention, especially when you’re building a brand. Whether you’re running a company, managing a team, or developing your personal brand, we’re all constantly told to “do more”, and goodness knows there are more than enough platforms to keep us busy! But where you focus and what you choose to do makes all the difference. This week’s episode explores how intention, selectivity, and the willingness to say “no” are the true engines of sustainable and meaningful brand growth (both personal and professional). My guest Caroline Turnipseed draws on her deep experience spanning powerhouse brands like Lilly Pulitzer and Victoria’s Secret, and shares the philosophy that guides her agency and the brands she works with to cut through digital noise and achieve genuine results.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

Caroline Turnipseed is the founder of CWT Consulting, a boutique digital marketing agency beloved by founder-led retail brands. With roots at major companies like Lilly Pulitzer and Victoria’s Secret, and an instrumental role in scaling Gal Meets Glam, Caroline brings a unique perspective on what grows a business, what doesn’t, and why digital entrepreneurs have to master the art of selectivity. She’s a sought-after advisor on marketing strategy, customer acquisition, partnerships, email, and navigating the ever-changing tech landscape.

This episode is part of our ongoing She Said/She Said Podcast + The Southern C Collaboration Series for 2026.

KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

  • THE CRITICAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “BUSY” AND “INTENTIONAL”: Laura and Caroline discuss why real growth requires focus, deliberate choices, and sometimes the courage to stop doing what isn’t working, especially for women conditioned to “do it all.”

  • CAROLINE’S CAREER JOURNEY & ENTREPRENEURIAL PIVOT: Discover what Caroline learned at brands of all sizes — from Lilly Pulitzer (where she honed her customer focus and partnership skills), to Victoria’s Secret (where she realized very large and corporate wasn’t for her), to the scrappy, all-hands creative world of Gal Meets Glam.

  • HOW TO MASTER SELECTIVITY: Caroline shares how niching down and finding your “sweet spot” customer and service transformed her effectiveness, helped scale her business, and became the core of her client strategy.

  • WHEN TO INVEST (AND WHEN NOT TO): Learn why Caroline tells many founders: “Don’t hire me yet. Fix your product first,” and how to know when your business is ready for agency support, advanced marketing tactics, and paid digital ads.

  • THE VALUE OF EMAIL (BEFORE INSTAGRAM!): Why email remains the most overlooked but essential marketing channel for brands of any size. Caroline details how building and using your email list boosts conversion and supports sustainable, owned growth.

  • FINDING YOUR BRAND VOICE: Tips to develop a distinctive, authentic message that resonates whether you’re crafting emails or Instagram posts, and why clarity is more important than elaborate brand guidelines.

  • USING AI AS A TOOL, NOT A REPLACEMENT: How Caroline and her team use AI for copywriting and idea generation, but why a human touch, especially in branding and imagery, is still irreplaceable.

  • HOW TO STAY ON TOP OF WHAT’S NEXT: Practical advice for staying up-to-date in a fast-changing marketing landscape, and why peer conversations and curiosity are just as important as reading the latest trade publication or blog.

This episode is packed with actionable advice for anyone building a brand. You’ll walk away inspired to focus on what actually moves you forward, and equipped with new tools and perspectives for intentional growth.

357. Getting Good Feedback From Your Swimsuit friends with guest Emily Lampkin

vendredi 27 février 2026Duration 41:04

SHOW NOTES

Episode 357: “HOW TO DEFINE YOURSELF BEFORE SOMEONE ELSE DOES”

Guest: Emily Lampkin, author "White Lies and Duct Tape"

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

What does it really mean to thrive (not just survive) as a woman leader? In this week’s episode, Laura Cox Kaplan welcomes her longtime friend and public affairs expert Emily Lampkin, author of “Duct Tape and White Lies.” Emily shares the powerful insights she’s gathered over years of observing women in leadership, not just those with impressive titles, but those who are truly thriving in their careers and lives. Together, Laura and Emily dive into the practical, strategic guidance that helps women stop waiting for the “perfect” moment and start moving forward today.

This episode tackles some of the biggest traps women face, from perfectionism to oversharing to “dream slashing” excuses, it offers fresh, actionable advice for defining your own path, building credibility, connecting intentionally, and gaining momentum even on your busiest days.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

Emily Lampkin is a veteran public affairs leader, leadership workshop creator, and author. Her work is informed by her own experiences navigating demanding environments, observing patterns of success among women leaders, and her commitment to making professional development accessible for every woman, regardless of industry, role, or work setting. Through her “Women Leaders Series” and now her book, Emily demystifies the steps to branding yourself, networking with intention, and moving past self-imposed obstacles.

KEY TOPICS AND WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

  • THE MYTH OF PERFECTIONISM: Emily reveals why “duct tape and white lies” became her guiding mantra for balancing busy lives, and how perfectionism unnecessarily holds us back from achievement and happiness.
  • DREAM SLASHERS: Learn about subtle, self-protective excuses that quietly shrink our ambitions (“I’ll do it when the kids are older… when work slows down… when I’m more ready”), and how to recognize and reframe them to propel yourself forward.
  • THE COST OF OVERSHARING: Emily challenges the cultural norm of “bringing your whole self to work.” She explains why oversharing can leak power and invite unnecessary judgment of your priorities. Concrete advice for setting boundaries and protecting your credibility.
  • RELIABILITY AS A LEADERSHIP QUALITY: Discover why reliability is the single most overlooked leadership trait, and why it underpins all lasting influence, both professionally and personally.
  • DEFINING YOURSELF BEFORE OTHERS DO: Emily outlines a “message grid” used in branding and campaigns, offering a step-by-step approach to developing a powerful, memorable story that sets you apart, and counters criticism.
  • PRACTICING YOUR STORY WITH “SWIMSUIT FRIENDS”: Learn why practicing your “selling you” pitch with trusted confidantes is the secret to building confidence and mastering compelling storytelling.
  • PLANNED SERENDIPITY IN NETWORKING: Emily shares her philosophy of blending intentional planning with openness to unexpected outcomes: from optimizing your LinkedIn presence to showing up at events with a clear (but flexible) goal, and the importance of putting yourself in new, sometimes uncomfortable, situations.
  • CONNECTING WITH PURPOSE AND SECRET GREETERS: Uncover how strategic introductions at events, and serving as a “secret greeter,” foster belonging and influence for both yourself and others.
  • BUILDING AN INDIVIDUALIZED PLAN OF ACTION: Emily’s most critical advice: Make a plan for “one woman: you.” Start today, even with just a few minutes of discretionary time, to take your next actionable step.

This episode is packed with wisdom, candor, and practical tools to help you build your influence from the inside out. If you’re ready to ditch perfection, define your own path, and make meaningful progress, this conversation is for you!

257. Two expert tips for building your strongest brand! Guest Lele Sadoughi

vendredi 4 août 2023Duration 40:01

SHOW NOTES

Title: Two expert tips for building your strongest personal and professional brand

Encore Episode 257

Guest: Lele Sadoughi

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

One of the secrets of building a strong brand either for your company or for yourself means tapping into the power of your unique story and those elements that make you and your business special. This can be a challenging exercise, but when you’re clear on your core values and you’re aligning them with the things that you love and that you’re passionate about and you’re using them to help you create a product or a service that can then contribute to someone else, it can make all the difference. It can also help you differentiate yourself and your product in a powerful way!

Tapping into what makes us unique and living in that uniqueness is also key to building influence. In this week’s conversation, I’m talking to the queen of the bejeweled headband — an embellishment artist who has taken “dopamine dressing,” but more specifically “dopamine accessorizing” to a new and colorful and sparkly level.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

Lisa — also known as “Lele” — Sadoughi is the founder and creative genius behind her bejeweled namesake brand Lele Sadoughi.

My conversation with Lele is part of our collaboration series with The Southern C. As part of this series, you have been hearing from incredible entrepreneurs and founders who are part of The Southern C network and who are sharing their expertise to help others. Whether you are already in the throes of running your business or just launching one or maybe just thinking about what might be next, I think you’ll find great value in all of these conversations.

Lele Sadoughi started her celebrated, colorful jewelry and accessory brand after working with an impressive roster of well-known brands — Rebecca Taylor, Ippolita, and Tory Burch.  She also launched the first ever J.Crew costume jewelry collection before deciding to launch her own brand in 2012.

What started with jewelry and accessories — most notably the bejeweled headband– has now expanded to include a range of other accessories including wallpapers. Each has a fun, colorful aesthetic that is very uniquely Lele Sadoughi.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

How to lean into your passion to create a business and a unique brand.

How to manage your creative energy.

Where Lele Sadoughi finds inspiration for her bejeweled accessories.

The power of collaboration and knowing how to pick the right partners.

Knowing when to pivot or expand, and why Lele advises brands to grow at their own pace.

LELE’S TOP ADVICE: “Realize that you don’t know how to do everything. Surround yourself with good, smart, trustworthy people who can make you a success and don’t try to do all the things that you don’t know how to do.”

I’d love to hear which topics and advice resonated most with you. Please share your thoughts with me on social media on Instagram, Linked In,  Facebook, and Threads!

SHOW NOTES:

Title: How to communicate your value at work.

ENCORE Episode 254

Guest: Dr. Laura Camacho, communications coach, author, and host of “Speak Up with Laura” podcast

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:  Tell me if this sounds anything like you: You put your head down and work, work, work. But, all that work, work, work hasn’t necessarily led to big promotions for you. What gives? Or maybe you were laid off, and your boss explained that it was because the company wasn’t clear what you actually do all day and how you add value.

These challenges may boil down to how effectively you are communicating not just the work itself, but the value you are providing, and how you are able to think about and communicate your value not only to the team, but more broadly.

If you are a regular listener to She Said/She Said Podcast, you know that a particularly important dimension needed to build and sustain influence is story. The power of story applies in how we think about our value and how we communicate it, and how it helps us create more visibility for the value we are already providing.

Today’s encore conversation dives into this topic and gives you lots to think about and some great tools for communicating your value so that you can build more visibility, and ultimately more influence!

EDITORIAL NOTE: Episode 254 is an encore episode and part of a podcast exchange with fellow podcast host Dr. Laura Camacho. Next week, I’ll be sharing the conversation Laura and I had on her podcast where we talk more about influence and the influence framework I’ve developed and how it can help you navigate and better utilize whatever life throws your way!

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST: Dr. Laura Camacho is a communications coach, the author of “The Practical Guide to Effective Communications,” and the host of “Speak Up with Laura” podcast. One of Laura’s particular specialties is helping those who might identify as introverts to more effectively communicate their contribution, and the value of their work.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

The link between effective communications and influence.

How to increase your visibility at work and why it matters.

The impact of using the right (or wrong) language, and how to avoid “Self-sabotaging language”.

Introverts and extroverts and how each processes information differently.

Why the advice to “just speak up more” isn’t particularly good advice for building credibility and influence.

Beware “overthinking” when someone asks for your view.

The role of emotion and how to create intention around it.

Be sure to share your feedback on which topics from this conversation resonate most with you. I’d love to hear! You can follow me and share your thoughts on Instagram, Linked In, Facebook and now Threads!  Or, use the contact link below.

253. How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility (Part 2)

vendredi 30 juin 2023Duration 30:46

SHOW NOTES

Title: How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility in your life (Part 2)

ENCORE Episode 253

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

Ever feel like your to-do list is running your life? Maybe you’re frustrated that you don’t have time for the types of experiences that make life more meaningful? Maybe you feel like your time is literally flying, but you don’t feel like you have much to show for it?

These feelings are familiar to most of us, and they are often accompanied by an overall feeling of being overwhelmed. In this state, it’s very difficult to take a step back and experience joy or to work to invest in those experiences that help us build and sustain influence in our lives and careers.

Chaos — and the overwhelm it leads to — can hijack our precious mental energy diverting it away from those projects and people who are most important to us. It’s calmness that enables us to be more present, while still getting all the things done that have to happen in a given day or week. It also happens to be an essential building block for building and sustaining influence!

THIS WEEK’S GUEST:  Laura Vanderkam is a time management and productivity expert, and the author of “Tranquility by Tuesday,” her latest book among an impressive library of some nine books on time management and productivity. Her work has appeared in: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune and Fast Company, and she is a repeat guest on She Said/She Said Podcast (Episode 93) having joined me back in 2020 to talk about WFH strategies with kids during the pandemic. Laura also hosts two podcasts: Before Breakfast, and co-hosts The Best of Both Worlds with Sarah Hart-Unger.

NOTE: This ENCORE conversation with Laura Vanderkam is split into two episodes — Episode 252 Part 1, and Episode 253 Part 2.

KEY TOPICS PART 2 EPISODE 253:

  • MINDSET: How your mindset impacts how you view time.
  • BATCHING: Why and how to “batch” smaller tasks.
  • FALSE NARRATIVES: How to tackle your own false narratives about time and “busyness.”
  • MAKING SPACE V. WASTING TIME: The real difference between wasted time v. making time and space to think.
  • TAKING ON “THE 2 MINUTE RULE: Why “the two minute rule” might not be the time saver you think it is.
  • WFH: The WFH productivity/distraction balance.
  • BACKUP PLANS: How to create effective backup plans, and how they can contribute to “career resilience”.

If you enjoyed the episode, please be sure to let me know and let others know by leaving a review. Reviews help me improve our content and to create more of what is valuable to YOU!

SHOW NOTES

Title: “How to create more meaning, more time, and more tranquility in your life”

ENCORE Episode 252 Part 1 of 2

THIS WEEK’S TOPIC:

Ever feel like your to-do list is running your life? Maybe you’re frustrated that you don’t have time for the types of experiences that make life more meaningful? Maybe you feel like your time is literally flying, but you don’t feel like you have much to show for it?

These feelings are familiar to most of us, and they are often accompanied by an overall feeling of being overwhelmed. In this state, it’s very difficult to take a step back and experience joy or to work to invest in those experiences that help us build and sustain influence in our lives and careers.

This week’s guest will help you redesign your life to not only get more done, but to help you calm the chaos.

NOTE: This ENCORE conversation with Laura Vanderkam is split into two episodes — Episode 252 Part 1, and Episode 253 Part 2, which gives you the option to listen to the entire conversation (both episodes back-to-back) which runs about an hour, or you can listen in the two separate 30-35 minute episodes. Your choice, but I do recommend listening to the episodes in order 252 followed by 253.

KEY TOPICS PART 1 – EPISODE 252:

  • TIME AWARENESS: Why time awareness and understanding more precisely how we spend our time can inform a more honest self narrative or story about our time and how busy we actually are v. how busy we think we are.
  • INCREASE YOUR HAPPINESS? Why time awareness might make you feel better and even happier.
  • SHOULD YOU PLAN YOUR WEEK ON SUNDAY? Why you might want to rethink the conventional wisdom of planning for the week ahead on Sunday.
  • LAURA’S 3-CATEGORY LIST: The benefits of a 3-category list for the upcoming week.
  • HOW SHOULD I SPEND MY SUNDAY? Why spending Sunday more focused on fun than on the week ahead might be more valuable.
  • LAURA’S TIP “ONE BIG ADVENTURE” AND “ONE SMALL ADVENTURE”: The power of making space for “one big adventure” and “one little adventure” and how that can make your time more memorable.

Don’t miss PART 2 of this conversation in Encore Episode 253!

251. How to write a book that helps you build your influence

vendredi 23 juin 2023Duration 48:55

SHOW NOTES

TITLE: How to write a book that helps you build your influence

EPISODE: 251 ENCORE

TOPIC:

Have you ever considered writing a book to showcase your expertise, build your brand, and help others benefit from what you know how to do? Or maybe, you’ve seen colleagues and friends have success with such efforts and you think, “maybe I should do that too.”

A book can be a great tool for building your brand and your thought leadership — both are essential elements for differentiating yourself and for boosting your influence. This week’s encore episode will give you great perspective on this topic!

THIS WEEK’S GUEST:

Robin Colucci is a journalist turned freelance writer and author turned book coach and entrepreneur. Her speciality is helping experts — like you — write books that showcase their expertise and build their influence.

Robin and I recorded this conversation back in 2020, and I found her advice incredibly helpful personally. I’ll be referring back to it this summer as I take some time off to think about additional content in the Fall.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE:

Why Robin recommends a personality assessment for would-be authors.

How to land your book concept.

How your “why” is actually different from your book “concept.”

Why “lack of time” is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves.

How to deal with imposter syndrome as a new author.
