They also take their daily peek at the Olympics, and check in on the women’s soccer team and the men’s hoops squad as both go in search of golden redemption of different sorts. TSN’s Frank Corrado stops by with a personal scouting report on former teammate Daniel Sprong, and offers his thoughts on why it hasn’t all come together for the skilled forward, and where he’d fit in the Canucks lineup. Then it’s Rob Willams of the The Daily Hive with his bread and butter reporting on the status of seating at Rogers Arena, plus a big boost in single game ticket costs for Canucks fans this season. | April 5 2024 - Frank Seravalli & Al Murdoch | 05 Apr 2024 | 01:54:26
Another playoff preview?? The Canucks close out their road trip in LA on Saturday, and a win makes it even more possible that the two sides face each other in the first round, so Matt and Blake look ahead to the possible lineup changes and how the Canucks might be able to break through the stodgy LA system. The guys also wonder aloud about the defence rotation and who will find themselves on the outside of the top 6 come playoff time. Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli stops by and gives his thoughts on the neck and neck Norris trophy race, the less dramatic Coach of the year competition, and the muddy future of the Arizona Coyotes. Plus, a special visit from the voice of the Canucks home games, PA announcer Al Murdoch! The big voice weighs in on the return to the playoffs and the excitement in the building, and does Al know if the skate jersey will be the choice for the post-season? Canucks earn the split and outlast the Coyotes! Quinn Hughes is the story right now and Matt and Blake are all over it as the Norris favourite has lifted his game to another level again. The guys poll whether or not Hughes is the team MVP, and whether anyone will follow his example as the team tries to find its dominance again ahead of the playoffs. Frank Corrado stops by to wax poetically on the Canucks best defenceman, and how he’s adapted and developed even further. Frank weighs in on the Norris consideration as well and then finishes with some storytelling on line brawls in the wake of the Devils-Rangers standoff. Jeff Paterson also stops in with his post-game report on what happened in the desert, and whether or not the Canucks PP may be turning the corner. Plus, the goaltending situation, as Silovs shines and Demko nears a return! JPat also reveals that Rink Wide: Vancouver will be going live with post-game shows on video! | March 22 2024 - Frank Seravalli & Jeff Paterson | 22 Mar 2024 | 01:50:17
The Canucks continue to set the pace atop the Pacific with a win over Montreal, and Nikita Zadorov takes his turn in the spotlight. Matt and Blake discuss the biggest night of Zadorov’s Canucks career as the big defenceman paces the team with two 1st period goals en route to the 4-1 win. They bring in the Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli for his thoughts on that, and how it might intertwine with the Flip Hronek negotiations. Also, Frank’s hysterical thoughts on the soap opera that is John Tortorella’s Flyers squad. Rink Wide: Vancouver host Jeff Paterson peeks in with a full post-game report, with more on Casey DeSmith’s fine effort, and the overall defensive play of late. They talk about Casey DeSmith making a fourth straight start and playing in a fifth consecutive game in place of the injured Thatcher Demko. The NHL season, is it too long? What could schedules look like if not every Western and Eastern team play each other every year? The black Skate jersey being the primary playoff attire, Thursday's game against the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames goaltender Dan Vladar headed for hip surgery and what that means for this summer on the goalie trade market, and ex-Canucks coach John Tortorella scratching his captain yet again. | March 20 2024 - Frank Corrado, Rob Williams & Arpon Basu | 20 Mar 2024 | 01:46:30
Pettersson's prowess propels PP, Canucks outlast the Sabres. Matt and Blake have a lot to discuss after the stars came out to play for the Canucks vs. Buffalo, Pettersson’s 3 points, Hughes and his hits, and Miller being Miller. Is it a sign that the Canucks are figuring things out? TSN’s Frank Corrado stops by to break down the game and what it means down the stretch, including the possible resurgence of Ilya Mikheyev and avoiding a lull before the postseason. Then, it’s Rob Williams from the Daily Hive with his take on “Fry-gate” at Rogers Arena, Quinn Hughes’ place in Canucks history, and any possible concerns on the lack of playoff experience for the Canucks. Arpon Basu of the Athletic joins the guys in studio to preview the game vs the plucky Canadiens, and explains how the Habs always seem to give the NHL's Cup contenders some issues, not to mention a history of BC connections with the team. All that, plus a nod to the late Chris Simon and the Whitecaps keep selling tickets! Presented by Applewood Auto Group. Follow us on social (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok & YouTube). Homestand Part 2! After 3 days off the game schedule, the Canucks get back at it this week starting with the Sabres, with yet another lineup shuffle from head coach Rick Tocchet. Matt and Blake go over those changes and the importance of these next 3 games against non-playoff teams. Springs has sprung, which means the boys of summer are almost ready, and the voice of the Vancouver Canadians Tyler Zickel checks in from Florida with the latest on the Blue Jays and the C’s. | March 18 2024 - Jeff Paterson | 18 Mar 2024 | 01:28:09
Troubles for Elias x2! Lindholm and Pettersson get the spotlight from Matt and Blake as offensive struggles continue for the two Swedish centres, especially in the wake of back to back letdown losses for the Canucks. Jeff Paterson stops by from Rinkwide Vancouver, and points out that the Canucks have blown leads, and very early leads, too often of late and aren’t able to finish the games right now. The nine-game homestead is only 30 percent done, but the Canucks do need to stay above 500 the rest of the way to fully ensure the Oilers don’t catch them, what can Rick Tocchet do to make sure that happens? The boys also take a look at the farm, with Abby post a big win on the weekend. Plus, the Whitecaps remain undefeated and the NFL quarterback carousel continues! Presented by Applewood Auto Group. Matt and Blake talk about potential first-round opponents, a spirited Canucks practice, the push to the playoffs, defence pair shuffling, Elias Lindholm's fit going forward, Elias Pettersson's poor game in Colorado and owning it Thursday, Rick Tocchet wanting more wall work from his wingers, free agency this summer, a college signing, wingspan (!), and the GMs meeting reviewing LTIR load-ups. Frank Corrado stops by to talk about the best matchup for the Canucks in the first round, how Elias Lindholm has to carry on after hearing his name in trade rumours, the approach to re-signing Filip Hronek and how the team can't pay him more than Hughes, the notion of bringing back Tyler Myers. Frank breaks down a "systems" goal the Canucks scored this week and his take on a quiet deadline. Rob Williams comments on what the city will look like in its return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tower power, outdoor watch parties, car flags...will they all be back? He talks about a quiet deadline and not getting Phil Kessel content going forward. Matt and Blake discuss the 4-3 overtime loss to Colorado, the season sweep by the Avs, the Canucks against the best in the West, another no-show from Elias Pettersson against a top opponent, the Avs best players taking over, Josh Manson's hit on J.T. Miller, Nikita Zadorov's response and Gordie Howe hat trick, the officiating, Canucks blowing leads, Ilya Mikheyev finally getting a goal, Conor Garland's continued strong play, poor Casey DeSmith taking the loss, EP-D reporting to Abbotsford, and Pittsburgh Penguins' missing bobbleheads. Hockey Hall-of-Famer Tony Gallagher stops by with his thoughts on the Canucks' season, the play of Quinn Hughes, Miller, Dakota Joshua; the coaching of Rick Tocchet; how the game has changed; the fantastic job done by management; and wanting to see a Canucks Cup before he passes. Rink Wide: Vancouver's Jeff Paterson stops by to talk about the game against the Avs, the blown leads, Petey's play, the hit on Miller, a sagging power play and how everything must be viewed through a playoff prism with just 15 games remaining. | March 13 2024 - Irfaan Gaffar | 13 Mar 2024 | 01:23:01
Matt and Blake live without Thatcher Demko, Casey DeSmith as the starting goalie, and the final frontier: the Colorado Avalanche. The Canucks have wins against every Western Conference team except Colorado heading into Wednesday's game. The guys also talk about the Norris Trophy showdown: Quinn Hughes vs Cale Makar; head coach Rick Tocchet's comments on DeSmith; Tyler Myers' return to action; new contracts for front-office employees and a promotion for Ryan Johnson; as well as Christian Wolanin and depth defencemen down the stretch. Irf Gaffar stops by to talk about Filip Hronek. Irf says the Canucks offered him a deal worth in the vicinity of $52M and were rejected. He speculates on what he expects Hronek can command and what the Canucks will pay. Other topics include DeSmith, a nothing trade deadline, the Avalanche, and Elias Lindholm's future. DeSmith is DeStarter - The Canucks get set for the Demko-less spell, and call up Arturs Silovs to backup vs the Avs on Wednesday. Matt and Blake debate the readiness of the team to win “meaningful games in March” without their Vezina contender, and whether or not fans should expect to see Silovs get any starts in the NHL before the end of the season. Rink Wide: Vancouver's Jeff Paterson stops by with the very latest from practice and his own thoughts on the goaltending. Plus, will the line combos remain unchanged as long as the Canucks keep winning? John Shannon makes his weekly appearance as well, with a summary of the Canucks at the deadline, DeSmith as worthy successor, and Filip Hronek’s possible price tag in relation to Quinn Hughes. | March 11 2024 - Patrick Johnston | 12 Mar 2024 | 01:39:19
Demko Drama! The Canucks had one of their most impressive wins of the season on the weekend vs the Jets, but Thatcher Demko’s early departure in that game has Canucks nation rightfully concerned. Matt and Blake discuss how Demko’s workload has figured into this, and what the trust level is in the #2, Casey DeSmith. They also weigh in on the Canucks defensive play of late and how that might factor in their ability to absorb the loss of Demko. The Province’s Patrick Johnston stops by to weigh in on all of this well, plus, he talks about how the Canucks cap situation may have been less dire if they had successfully made one particularly creative move. PJ also gets into the Canucks' uncanny record with Carson Soucy in the lineup, and why that is the case. All this, plus some NFL signings and a first win of the season for the Whitecaps! | NHL Trade Deadline: March 8 2024 - Jeff Paterson | 08 Mar 2024 | 01:48:20
Matt and Blake pull a Seinfeld. A show about nothing after the Canucks do jack squat at the NHL Trade Deadline. The guys discuss what the Canucks didn't do in terms of not acquiring a player, nor signing Phil Kessel. They talk about whether they should have beaten the price Winnipeg paid for Tyler Toffoli, missing out on Jake Guentzel, and Jason Zucker. Other topics include: bargain prices for teams with cap space & the Canucks' lack thereof, not wanting to go 'all-in' and sell the farm, not moving on from Ilya Mikheyev earlier, Vegas loading up and the means by which the Knights could load up, and Vasily Podkolzin up/down and role going forward. Jeff Paterson (Rink Wide: Vancouver) stops by to say he was surprised and disappointed that the Canucks didn't do more. Jeff cites the need for another scoring winger, the lack of 4th-line identity, the inability to add character players, the lack of quality available (in Patrik Allvin's eyes), Elias Lindholm's go-forward from here, needing Podkolzin to play a role going forward in his analysis. We hear from GM Allvin at the Rogers Arena podium, and we go To The People and hear from listeners/viewers on Canucks-related topics. Presented by Applewood Auto Group. | March 7 2024 - Ray Ferraro & Frank Seravalli | 07 Mar 2024 | 01:46:23
Trades, trades, and more trades! But still quiet for the Canucks... Matt and Blake talk about where the Canucks are right now in their pursuit of roster improvements, just as the West Conference contenders around them continue to wheel and deal. Tyler Toffoli and Jake Guentzel remain possibilities but nothing seems close. Canucks analyst and ESPN broadcaster Ray Ferraro stops by with his thoughts on the roller coaster of news around the Canucks, he talks about the fit for Elias Lindholm in the lineup, and whether the old 3rd line should be reunited when Dakota Joshua returns to full health. Then, it’s Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli with the latest inside scoop on the Canucks trade aspirations and whether Toffoli or Guesntzel can still happen, and his thoughts on the “creative” moves made by the Vegas Golden Knights in particular. | March 6 2024 - Darren Dreger & Frank Corrado | 06 Mar 2024 | 01:32:05
Matt and Blake discuss the latest trade deadline rumblings and the arms race igniting in the West. Canucks' exploration of a Elias Lindholm for Jake Guentzel deal, Vancouver's interest in Arizona winger Jason Zucker, Vasily Podkolzin being sent down, the Avalanche adding Sean Walker and Casey Mittelstadt (while parting with two B.C. boys), the Oilers adding Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick, Vegas getting Anthony Mantha, the Kings positioning themselves, a buyer's market shaping up (great for Vancouver) are all topics. As are the 2-1 overtime win in L.A., the miraculous Thatcher Demko save, Petey & J.T. stepping up when needed, and the boring Kings style. Darren Dreger jumps on to discuss the "salacious" report about a 3-team deal with Boston and Pittsburgh involving Lindholm & Guentzel. Dreger says the Canucks are still checking in on the defence market but won't likely be bringing an ex-Canuck winger back. He comments on the Canucks being aggressive, the shaping-up of a buyer's market, targets with term such as David Savard and Frank Vatrano, what's happening in Calgary with ex-Canuck Jacob Markstrom and Noah Hanifin, and his thoughts on the Canucks' glorious season to date and chances in the postseason. Frank Corrado hops on and says the Canucks now "must" trade Lindholm. That word leaking that they are exploring a Guentzel deal using Lindholm as bait means genie is out of the bottle and there's no going back, Frank evaluates why Lindholm hasn't worked out, Guentzel's fit, the prices paid for Anthony Mantha and Vladimir Tarasenko, and the availability of Vatrano, Savard. | March 5 2024 - Gary Mason & John Shannon | 05 Mar 2024 | 01:50:05
Deadline Day minus 3! The trade targets are coming fast and furious for the Canucks, and around the league, and today Matt and Blake wonder how far the team is ready to go before Friday. Is there a player that would peel free Jonathan Lekkerimäki? Or Tom Willander?” Or even a soon-to-be 20-goal scorer in Nils Höglander? The Globe and Mail’s Gary Mason stops by for a walk down memory lane on the last time the Canucks were in this position, plus after years of losing, is ownership pushing an aggressive deadline week? John Shannon has his take on the trade pace around the league, and gives us his player choice for the Canucks to acquire before the end of the week. | March 1 2024 - Patrick Johnston & Axel Schuster | 01 Mar 2024 | 01:49:54
Matt and Jeff discuss the 5-1 loss to the Kings and whether their play over the last fortnight is a blip or something deeper, as the Canucks fall out of first place in the overall league standings. They talk about Rick Tocchet's harsh comments on his team, 6-7 guys not going, "egregious" details, having "lost" their staples of playing without the puck, that Elias Pettersson needs to get going, the criticism of Quinn Hughes and Filip Hronek. They analyze the events of this week on the Pettersson contract front: the Carolina offer, the Canucks drawing a line in the sand to eliminate the distraction for club and player alike, and speculate on the length and value of the contract. They also discuss the latest trade deadline reports, evaluate the market, size up Patrik Allvin's comments to in-house media about targets and prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki, plus shout out the 2024 inductees to the B.C. | February 29 2024 - Frank Seravalli & Rob Williams | 29 Feb 2024 | 01:32:51
Matt and Jeff discuss Frank Seravalli's report that Elias Pettersson is now ready to talk extension with the Canucks, and that the sides are considering an eight-year deal. They discuss what brought this about, whether the noise in the market was a contributing factor, fans and media getting anxious, head coach Rick Tocchet musing that it might be a distraction and effected his play, even the surging popularity of J.T. Miller? The guys also discuss the Chris Tanev trade and whether the Canucks missed out, while turning attention to other defencemen on the market. What kind of defenceman they need with Carson Soucy on the comeback trail. The penalties, they are a problem. Tocchet's comments on punishing players who take too many, as well as opposing players snapping their heads and drawing penalties. Canucks once had that rep, is it gone now? Seravalli joins to flesh out his Pettersson report, Frank also talks about the Tanev deal, whether the Canucks were in it until the end, and whether the Flames did well on the return. Frank tells us about the Canucks interest in Minnesota Wild winger Brandon Duhaime, and floats a potential destination for ex-Canuck Tyler Toffoli, who might be on the move by next Friday's trade deadline. Rob Williams stops by and says finally (finally!) we have an indication that Pettersson wants to stay in Vancouver. | February 28 2024 - Frank Corrado & Harman Dayal | 28 Feb 2024 | 01:52:22
Matt and JPat discuss the overtime loss to the Pens, another magnificent game from J.T. Miller, whether they were wrong about Miller, the crowd chanting his name and J.T. playing dumb, Rick Tocchet saying he needs more guys going while singling out Miller as the exception, Nils Höglander reaching 200 NHL games and his continued development with some good (another goal) and some bad (culpability on tying goal), Elias Lindholm's struggles, Arshdeep Bains' first week in the NHL, that vaunted third line and how it is now split up and looking lost, the penalties and whether referees have a vendetta, a good night for the fourth line (when they needed it), and Tocchet saying power-play guys need a breather from each other (and whether Miller and Elias Pettersson were the two guys in question). Frank Corrado joins to talk about Miller, his pulling guys into the fight and how you can see the confidence brimming. He breaks down the struggles of Quinn Hughes and Lindholm, and whether the latter is a positional fit with the rest of the top-6. He comments on the workload of his old defence partner, and gives us his trade-deadline wish-list player. Harman Dayal stops by and tells us why the Canucks are taking so many penalties. | February 21 2024 - Irfaan Gaffar & Patrick Johnston | 21 Feb 2024 | 01:33:48
Adversity is officially here for the Canucks! 3 straight losses after the defeat in Denver, so that has Matt and Blake looking at exactly what might be wrong with the team, and what might realistically be changed to stop the bleeding. Irfaan Gaffar stops by with his take on the game vs the Avs, including the NHL debut of Arshdeep Bains. The guys get into whether Bains might actually be a part of the solution moving forward, and where he fits in. Irf also chimes in on the pursuit of Chris Tanev, and the update on Phil Kessel in Abby. Patrick Johnston pays his weekly visit, and he is “not” buying into any moral victories after the performance in Colorado. He also has a breakdown of the struggling Canucks power play, players in the wrong places, and how that might have changed their fortunes in the past week. Also, his thoughts on Bains and a struggling Ilya Mikeheyev. All that, plus the BC Lions with a key contract extension and more! Presented by Applewood Auto Group. Matt and Blake discuss a 4-1 win against Detroit, a two-goal game for Elias Lindholm and his Canucks future as a centre, according to head coach Rick Tocchet. They talk about how much fun it is watching the Canucks these days (most fun ever?) and the team's growing lead atop the NHL standings. They talk Nikita Zadorov's honour and honesty, his fun doing the Griddy dance back at Jake Walman, Thatcher Demko's brilliance and attempt at goal, Nils Höglander moving on up to PP2, and where Phil Kessel fits when (if?) he's signed. Frank Seravalli explains the Canucks' plans for Phil Kessel and how, if he works out, the team might be done adding forwards and will focus attention on defence. He tells us what others around the NHL are saying about the league-leading Canucks, extols the virtues of Tocchet and says he'll be a magnet for free agents, and goes through the Pittsburgh Penguins' conundrum including an injury to deadline target Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby's future. Jeff Paterson, the host of Rink Wide: Vancouver, talks about the win over the Red Wings, the goaltender showdown Saturday against the Jets, the plight of Ilya Mikheyev, the plans for Kessel, Brock Boeser's slump, and how the penalty-killing is now...wait for it...good! | February 15 2024 - Patrick Johnston & Rob Williams | 15 Feb 2024 | 01:34:55
Matt and Blake discuss Dakota Joshua's injury and whether it was worth fighting in Chicago just as he and that line were peaking. Ilya Mikheyev is the beneficiary of Joshua missing Thursday's home game, can he exit his 22-game slump and does he have to show something, or risk being traded, before the March 8 deadline? The guys talk about Phil Kessel's fitness level and fit, whether the Canucks should risk losing a player on waivers to add him to the NHL roster, and about retribution/vengeance with the Wings after the Nikita Zadorov hit on Lucas Raymond and Jake Walman's *Griddy* celebration. Patrick Johnston joins and talks about his article with Jim Rutherford and the Canucks seeking depth. Patrick talks about Kessel's future with the Canucks, that fantastic third line and Joshua, the pursuit of Chris Tanev, Jake Guentzel getting injured, and bad blood with the Wings. Rob Williams tells us why Costco was trending in Vancouver upon the Kessel news, compares Kessel to the Mats Sundin signing of 2009, wonders who he would play, and explains how he got an exclusive interview with Mark Messier, who says he was brought to captain a Canucks' (ahem) "rebuild." Lee, and a chance to knock the Stamps down a notch. They preview the Whitecaps and Dynamo as well, plus, a look at the first two rounds of The Open Championship. Matt and Blake talk about the Canucks ending (winning?) their road trip in Chicago against the still Bedard-less Chicago Blackhawks; Brock Boeser's appearance on Spittin' Chiclets and finally getting to 30 goals to "shut up" the media; ESPN finally giving Quinn Hughes his due with their defence rankings. The guys also look at Seattle and Arizona, barely hanging on in the Western Conference playoff race, and the potential availability of their UFAs prior to the trade deadline. Irf Gaffar joins to talk deadline: Chris Tanev, Jake Guentzel, the profile of depth pieces. Does Cup experience matter? Handedness? Size? Irf sizes up a potential arms race in the Pacific with Vegas and Edmonton, comments on making defensive trades, and gives his take on the Canucks' form of late. John Shannon joins and talks "The Code." He reveals that he has a leather-bound copy of the code, talks about the Detroit-Vancouver rematch Thursday, how he wasn't bothered by Ridley Greig's slapshot into an empty net, and how retribution often puts a team at a competitive disadvantage. John comments on the Penguins and Kraken falling out of the race and who might be available, as well as the Super Bowl telecast and its huge viewership. Presented by Applewood Auto Group. | February 9 2024 - Frank Seravalli & Jeff Paterson | 09 Feb 2024 | 01:45:11
Matt and Blake discuss the Canucks' worst loss of the season in Boston, Rick Tocchet calling out his stars (without naming names), their penchant for giving up shorthanded goals, the possibility of seeing Ilya Mikheyev demoted and Nils Höglander promoted, their performance this season against Cup contenders, and a busy weekend with games in Detroit and Washington. Other topics include if there's a buyer's market at the deadline?; the number of defencemen available, the teams seeking defencemen, and bubble teams that may now be getting out and selling off rentals. Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff stops by to talk about the Canucks' interest in free agent Phil Kessel, whether there's any smoke to the Rasmus Ristolainen rumours, Calgary's quandary with former Canuck Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin, and former Canuck Nick Dowd fetching a first-round pick? Rink Wide: Vancouver host Jeff Paterson joins and carves the Canucks' effort in Boston. Jeff is disappointed that such a big game went so meekly into the night. He looks at Tocchet's comments, the star players, Elias Pettersson's effort on a race with Danton Heinen, Höglander's upward mobility, line juggling and the games in Detroit and Washington.
