Episode 37: 1995 - Braveheart
Season 1 · Episode 37
jeudi 5 septembre 2024 • Duration 01:19:29
It's the one you've all been waiting for as 2 Scots and an Englishman tackle the story (or not as the case may be!) of William Wallace in Mel Gibson's historical Scottish epic Braveheart! That of course means its 1995, a year at the heart of the Britpop scene with some cracking movies to match out in the cinema.
Alongside discussing the merits of Braveheart, its cultural impact and benefits to the Stirling tourism scene we also have a couple of rarities with a non-English language film in Il Postino (The Postman) and a children's film in Babe.
Emma Thompson makes her second podcast appearance with Sense and Sensibility, another British period drama - will this one charm us any more than all the others we've seen so far?!
And of course we're also looking back at Apollo 13, Ron Howard's docudrama about the disastrous space mission of the same name, led by Tom Hanks at the peak of his powers.

Episode 24: 1990 - Dances With Wolves
Season 1 · Episode 24
jeudi 4 août 2022 • Duration 01:20:08
On this episode of Revisiting the Oscars we're moving forward in time to 1990, when 'The Godfather Part 3' was released to conclude the trilogy. Listen on for more discussion on the optimal way to eat an orange, whilst Bingham thinks he may have found the best ever impersonation of a donkey....
It's a bumper year for the gangster genre with Scorsese's classic 'Goodfellas' also on the agenda this time around, alongside the smash supernatural hit 'Ghost', forgotten Robin Williams/Robert De Niro drama 'Awakenings' and Kevin Costner's 'Dances With Wolves'.
We also muse on Bingham's status as an honorary Englishman, recent footballing success and Mason's fondness for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Episode 23: 1974 - The Godfather Part II
Season 1 · Episode 23
lundi 27 juin 2022 • Duration 01:23:45
Last time round we headed back to 1972 to talk about arguably the greatest film of all time in 'The Godfather', so we felt it would be rude not to continue the series with the next entry in the trilogy - all of which were nominated for Best Picture.
That means we're in 1974, a year in which Francis Ford Coppola had 2 films nominated for the big prize (also 'The Conversation'), alongside leading roles from all time screen icons like Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman ('Lenny'), Jack Nicholson ('Chinatown'), Paul Newman and Steve McQueen (both 'The Towering Inferno').
There might also be a long overdue return to some Corrie chat alongside a discussion about how best to eat an orange (seriously)....!
