This week's guest on the podcast is Sigrún Daníelsdóttir. Sigrún is a clinical psychologist and for most of her career has worked with children and adolescents with eating and body image problems, both within treatment and prevention settings. Her current position is as project manager for mental health promotion at the Directorate of Health in Iceland. Sigrun started the Body Respect movement in Iceland, which focuses on promoting body satisfaction and respect for body diversity through various forms of social activism and advocacy. She is the organizer of various awareness-raising events, like the annual celebration of International No Diet Day in Iceland She is also the co-founder and former president of the Icelandic Association for Body Respect and the Icelandic Eating Disorders Association. And because of Sigrun’s activisim, following the Weight Stigma Conference in Reykjavik in 2015, the City of Reykjavik updated their human rights policy to include weight as a protected category. Emily Nagoski began her career as a sex educator, focusing not only on sex but on stress, nutrition, physical activity, and, sexual violence prevention. She went to Indiana University for a M.S. in Counseling Psychology, completing clinical internships at the Kinsey Institute Sexual Health Clinic and the IU GLBT Student Support Services Office. She earned a Ph.D. in Health Behavior with a concentration in human sexuality. She taught graduate and undergraduate classes in human sexuality, relationships and communication, stress management, and sex education. For eight years, she worked as a lecturer and Director of Wellness Education at Smith College, before transitioning to full-time writing and speaking. She now travels all over, training professionals, teaching college students and other lay people, and learning more every day about the science and art of sexual wellbeing. She is a trained Gottman Seven Principles educator, with extensive specialized training in bystander intervention, motivational interviewing, and cultural inclusivity, including race, gender, and class. Emily’s mission in life is to teach women to live with confidence and joy inside their bodies.

We talk about childhood abuse and neglect and the negative impact that this can have, with shame being a huge part of this. Self-compassion can be the antidote to shame but for someone with a history of abuse, there can be many obstacles to self-compassion. We talk about these obstacles and the ways to get past them.
