Raising Visibility - From CIO to Angel Investor: Laura Meyer on Female Founders, AI, and the Future of Work29 Oct 202500:41:24
How AI is Revolutionising Startups & Why Female Founders Get Just 2% of Funding

This week on Raise Your Visibility Online, host Louise Brogan sits down with Laura Meyer, former CIO at HarperCollins UK and Turner Broadcasting, now an angel investor championing female founders through Angel Academy.

After 27 years in corporate leadership, Laura made the leap to angel investing and hasn't looked back. In this fascinating conversation, she shares why AI might be the great equaliser for entrepreneurs, how it's transforming business at unprecedented speed, and what founders really need to know before seeking investment.

This episode is essential listening if you're:

  • Considering starting your own business

  • Wondering how AI will impact your career

  • A female founder seeking investment guidance

  • Curious about the angel investment world

  • Concerned about the future of work

🎧 Episode HighlightsThe Shocking Funding Gap

Only 2% of venture capital funding goes to all-female founded companies, whilst approximately 80% goes to all-male teams. Laura explains why this disparity persists and how organisations like Angel Academy are working to change it.

AI: The Game-Changer for Startups

"Previously you might have needed a bookkeeper, someone to help with marketing, someone to write posts. Now you can do a lot of that through AI tools. The entry level for cost has come down, making it more accessible for more people—and more women."

The 47% Benchmark That Changes Everything

Recent research (GDP Value project) found that AI output was valued at 47%—meaning AI outperformed human experts nearly half the time. And that's right now. Laura asks: "Imagine what it's going to be in another three months, another six months?"

From Five Days to 30 Minutes

Laura shares real examples of deep research projects that would normally take five days and require hiring a contractor, now being completed in 30 minutes with well-crafted AI prompts—at PhD level quality.

The One Question Every Founder Must Answer

"What problem am I solving and will people PAY for it? Because if they're not, there's no point."

🔑 Key Takeaways

On Starting a Business:

  • Bootstrap first—test your idea as a side hustle before leaving your job

  • Question rigorously whether people will actually pay for your solution

  • Team matters as much as the idea when seeking investment

  • If bootstrapping doesn't work, you can pivot or try again with minimal loss

On AI Transformation:

  • AI is replacing Google for information searches

  • It will evolve into a complete operating system integrated with everything

  • "Work slop" (unedited AI outputs) is creating new corporate problems

  • The responsibility to upskill lies with each individual

  • Free resources exist (OpenAI Academy) for learning

  • Companies must treat AI as a fundamental change management project

On Angel Investment:

  • Investment isn't the right path for every business

  • Investors back teams, not just ideas

  • Expect it to take at least 10 years for most startups

  • Due diligence is rigorous—your competition, IP, and market will be thoroughly examined

  • Angel investors only get returns if there's an exit

On the Future of Work:

  • Graduate unemployment is around 30%

  • Some jobs will disappear or reduce significantly

  • Universal basic income is discussed but no real solutions are being proposed

  • Young people need education systems that prepare them for an AI-integrated world

  • Working together and learning AI as teams is crucial

💡 Practical Tips Shared

  1. Test your business idea: Ask people in your network if they'd actually pay for what you're proposing

  2. Use AI for research: Try ChatGPT or similar tools for deep research projects instead of traditional search

  3. Learn together: Take on AI projects as a team to upskill collectively

  4. Be specific with prompts: Tell AI exactly what you want, including reference types and data parameters

  5. Always verify AI outputs: Check facts and references—AI wants to help so much it sometimes fabricates information

  6. Find a co-founder: Building a business is lonely; having someone to share the journey makes it sustainable

📊 Fascinating Statistics Mentioned

  • 2% of VC funding → all-female founded companies

  • ~80% of VC funding → all-male teams

  • 47% of AI outputs valued higher than human expert outputs (October 2024)

  • 30% graduate unemployment rate

  • 36 channels broadcast from Turner Broadcasting's European offices at peak

  • 10 years typical timeline for startup success

🎯 Quotable Moments

On structural bias:

"If a woman is very strong in her thoughts and what she believes in, it can be seen as being very opinionated. Whereas a man can be seen as having great leadership skills."

On AI speed:

"Something that wasn't possible a month ago is possible now. The speed of it—I've never seen, I don't think anybody's seen transformation like it."

On resilience:

"Look, it's fine to have competition. But you've got to think: can somebody bigger come in and say, 'I like what they're doing, I'm just going to do it as well?' And then your business is gone."

On upskilling:

"The responsibility is yours to learn it and upskill yourself. There's loads of free courses out there that people can access."

Ep. 186 - Cooking up your LinkedIn Content08 Sep 202100:21:16

I love to cook.   Preferably from scratch.  My favourite things to cook are usually vegetarian, often with an Asian flavour - think curries, stir fries but also a good old lasagne or even a roast chicken dinner.

We don’t always have time to cook from scratch though.   During a busy mid week, you can find us digging around the freezer and pulling out the old reliable chips and fish fingers with a side of baked beans.

At the weekend, we might get a takeaway ordered in.   More often than not, it’s a pre-made M&S thai or chinese ready meal selection.   Some gyozas to start followed by King Prawn bhuna with a side of naan.

My neighbours get the delivery box from a well known brand full of the exact ingredients to cook with a recipe.  IT seems to cost a little more, but there’s no having to think about it, and they are still getting fresh ingredients.

Which of these are you?

Fast food fan

Cooking from scratch

Frozen ingredients

Ready made meals

Delivery box with recipes

Eating out all the time/Deliveroo’s best customer

What has this got to do with LinkedIn I hear you say.

Let’s look at your eating habits and compare them to your LinkedIn content creation habits.

Here’s how I see the comparison

The fast food fan - quick and convenient but not usually that good for you

You are posting on LinkedIn when you have time,  throwing up content when you can without really thinking about the long term impact (don’t sue me fast food fans ;)

There is not much of a strategy involved.

Cooking from scratch

You want to learn how to use LinkedIn yourself and spend time working out the right steps - from getting your profile optimised to studying YouTube videos on what, when and how to post.  You are getting great results from your efforts and you have the time to invest in doing this yourself.   The content you are sharing is thoughtful,  engaging and winning you clients.  The time you take is worth the reward.

If you wanted a guide to help keep you on the right track, our content planning and monthly support could be just the right recipe for you.  We’ll help you get your content planned out - understanding what content buckets will work and I am on hand to guide you and answer your questions throughout the month.   Just like Alexa, your favourite cook book or YouTube cooking channel!

Frozen Ingredients

You have an idea of what you want to share on LinkedIn, and can dip into your ‘freezer’ box when you need - you don’t spend a huge amount of time - its more of a tick the box exercise for you.   Some days can be ‘healthier’ than others.  The content could be a bit bland if you are honest.

Ready Made Meals

You have someone else take care of this.  All you have to do is grab and go.   Someone has taken their expertise and knowledge, weighed it all out carefully and provided you with the content you need to get the job done. Like the standard of ready meals out there, you get what you pay for.  That 99 pence microwave burger vs the local farm shop pre-made lasagne dish?  Incomparable.   In terms of your LinkedIn content, yes you can pay someone £100 a month to schedule a daily post across your social media channels - but you can also invest a little more to get high quality content, from an expert that doesn’t leave you feeling a bit dissatisfied.

Delivery boxes with recipes.

You’ve probably seen these - there are offers all over Facebook for them.   Pay a little more and get bespoke recipes and recommendations tailored to your family.    Delivered to your door so all you have to do it put them together.

In terms of LinkedIn done-for-you service, we work with you to get the right recipe that works for your business.   CArefully curated with team expertise, and delivered to you at the agreed date and time.  All you have to do is post the content on your own LinkedIn.  Sounds appealing doesn’t it?

You eat out all the time - maybe you have a private chef!

So if the budget is no issue, what would we all do?  Unless you are passionate about cooking for yourself, wouldn’t it be fabulous to just turn up to the table and have a delicious, tailored meal presented in front of you?   With the right vitamins, minerals and one that leaves you feeling energized and ready to get on with your day?

It would be my honour to be your private LinkedIn support.  My team can write your articles, posts, even post to your Company Page for you and work with your own assistants or team if you are too busy.

Ep. 182 - LinkedIn Profiles, networking and niching with Karen Tisdell28 Jul 202101:02:10

LinkedIn, networking and community

An early adopter of LinkedIn, Karen Tisdell recognised the platform’s potential when working as a recruiter. Foreseeing the importance of how business leaders are perceived online, Karen began her LinkedIn profile writing business. Now in her 12th year of business, Karen regularly facilitates LinkedIn training for some of the biggest companies in Australia. Her true love, however, is writing profiles for business owners. Located in Sydney, Karen asserts her family complains that her voice travels through walls and so given the challenge of time differences, she doesn’t work or connect with people located outside the Asia-Pacific region.

Interesting facts about Karen - she loves collaboration and runs a regular Friday LinkedIn Live session with Michelle J Raymond - a company page specialist.

Karen loves LinkedIn personal profiles. They enjoy robust discussions on what LinkedIn strategies are best and 'compete' to add value to our audience. Check out the LinkedIn RoundUp with Raymond & Tisdell.

Karen does not connect globally unless the person is also a LinkedIn trainer or LinkedIn expert.

Pick your Pond

We talk about the importance of 'picking your pond.'

You want a pond that's kind of connected to another pond, maybe there's a little stream connecting them. And you want to pick a pond and know where the big fish are, the ones that go through multiple ponds.

It's all about finding the right people. So pick your pond and and look at who's in the waterways near you and the other ponds and play in that.

We talk about how generous Karen is in business, sharing tips and opportunities to fellow trainers.

Karen says she love connecting with people who do the same thing as she does. She thinks about

"who can I introduce this person to?"

"How can we grow great together?"

It's not about carving up the pie. It's about making your pie bigger.

Questions Karen asks her clients

In order to deliver an excellent service, there are a lot of questions asked including:

  • what do you do?
  • What's your process?
  • What's your call to action?
  • What do you want people to do when they hit your profile?
  • What is your objective?

We are more connected than our parents. We are far more connected than our grandparents. All the studies are saying that we know far more people. Yes.

Fact: the average American meets 80,000 people in their lifetime.

So, you know, LinkedIn is, it's really important. Because when you meet so many people, it's hard to stay front of mind. We each think that we're special and memorable. But to the other person, they're meeting so many other people as well!

So having a LinkedIn profile, makes you stand out that much more and a winning LinkedIn profile, really good profile converts.

To build trust, you need to be seen in three different places,

Somebody hears you on a podcast, and then they see you on a stage and then they write something.

Profile Writing Tips

Does your profile align with your goals for being on LinkedIn?

Does your background banner align with what you want to be known for.

For example - on your background you've got a picture of a beach. That tells us you want to be on holiday!

We love the beach, but on't have it in your background banner as that doesn't tell me anything about how you work with technology.

So think about your goal and make sure that you're putting that that strategic goal, that strategic intent, sort of all through your profile.

If you are ready to build the LinkedIn profile you deserve, get in touch.

On Air Coaching call with Veronica Sagastume of Fortified Accounting.

V is the CEO of Fortified Accounting, a Silicon Valley based business offering Accounting & Business Solutions for StartUps.

V had several questions for me including:

  1. Since I have both a personal profile and a new business page, when I create content, when referring out my firm, team and services, should I say: We, Our, Us, not I, Me.

2. Should I create and publish the same type of content on my personal profile as on my business page?

3. What type of content would you recommend (posts, polls, videos, etc) to attract and connect with my ideal clients: Startup companies in the Software as a service industry in their first 3 years of business?

4. What should my business page profile focus on vs my personal profile.

Ep. 176 - LinkedIn Success Stories16 Jun 202100:13:13

There is something truly inspiring about hearing how people I’ve worked with have got on afterwards. So, in this week’s podcast I wanted to share some of these success stories with you all, as it’s a wonderful opportunity to hear how even small changes can make a real, measurable difference.

In this episode I will tell you about two women who I have worked with that have both had unbelievable success as a direct result of raising their profiles on LinkedIn.

The first is a client of mine who’s based in the Maldives. wanted to use my profile review service to improve her visibility to her target audience. It was all the more important too given the devastation of the pandemic on the tourist industry. As a result of my session with her, she got back in touch recently to tell me about some money-can’t-buy coverage that she received from a global publisher. Thrilled is an understatement!

My second story is one of my ‘done for you’ clients where my team write the LinkedIn posts for you. We posted a good news story on the Friday, and by the following Monday it had more than 10,000 views and many many comments.

But success is not just about coverage, views or comments – it’s also about the real-life business impact. So, I’ve also got a great example of how one client’s work with me led directly to two, yes TWO, five-figure new business contracts. If you’d like help with your LinkedIn strategy and for me to create this kind of success for your business, then please get in touch and I will get straight back to you.

www.louisebrogan.com/workwithme  Thank you for listening, don’t forget to leave a review and tell me what you think.

Ep. 175 - Should you get LinkedIn Creator (and what is it?)09 Jun 202100:19:53

This week’s podcast is all about a new feature that’s just launched on LinkedIn – it’s called LinkedIn Creator.

If you’ve never heard of it - or even if you have but have no idea whether it’s right for you - then listen up! I’ll be talking you through the who, where, what, why and how in this simple-to-understand breakdown of everything you need to know.

PODCAST PLAYER

Over the last 10 years, LinkedIn has really changed from where it used to be. Back then, you may have turned to LinkedIn to find a job and would have maybe updated your profile accordingly. Fast forward to today and there’s a small, but growing, group of people who are creating content on the platform, for the platform. For example, live videos, writing articles, blog posts and comments all intended to start conversations.

In this episode, I discuss who LinkedIn creators are, and how to judge for yourself how, and why you’re using LinkedIn to see whether you might fall into this category (heads up - not everyone will, and that’s totally fine!).

Once you’ve made that decision, track along with me to understand the three key elements that Creator offers:

  1. Introductory card: what it is, where to find it, and what it should say about you
  2. Number of followers: How to see how many you have and whether they’re visible and clickable to your network
  3. Newsfeed prioritisation: How to ensure that what your followers see are the 5 or 6 things that you want them to read/watch

If you want to find out more about LinkedIn Creator, why not book in with me for a VIP session? The online session lasts for 3 hours and during that time we will go through your LinkedIn profile with a fine-toothed comb; working out what needs to change if you have an existing profile, or how to start from scratch. We also go through your settings to make sure your profile is optimised – which means that people wanting to work with you can find and connect with you easily. I also offer a monthly retainer option to support and help you achieve your goals on an ongoing basis (see the links below).

I work with clients all over the world, so time zone is certainly no barrier!

Please just get in touch with me to find the most convenient time and let’s get it booked in - my June diary only has a couple of slots available now, but I would love to work with you!

I’d love to hear what you think of LinkedIn Creator? Do you think it’s for you? Are you going to use it? Please do let me know.

Don’t forget to rate and subscribe to my podcasts, if you enjoyed it and found it useful, please give it an ‘A’. Thank you!

Ep. 174 -5 Golden Rules for Professionals Using LinkedIn with Crystal Collinson02 Jun 202100:37:07

In a podcast first this week, I’m co-hosting with my friend Crystal Collinson, which means for once I’ll be answering, as well as asking the questions!

Crystal is the principal of Crystal Collinson Interiors, a full-service design firm specialising in the design and decorating of everything from new homes through to commercial projects. She lives by the simple philosophy that “design should solve problems, not create them”.

She’s now putting her years of experience to good use, with the launch of her very own podcast – “The Productive Designer”, later this month. With it, she plans to educate, collaborate and motivate all interior design professionals to get to where they want to be.

In this episode I share my advice for how professionals such as interior designers like Crystal can get the most out of LinkedIn.

I offer my golden rules on..

1.     Optimising your LinkedIn profile

2.     Being selective with your connections

3.     How, when, and what to post

4.     Why you need to focus on building relationships, and not just business

5.     How to get your customers to find you

We also talk a little about the new LinkedIn Creator profile that’s in the process of being rolled out by LinkedIn. If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s a way for people who create a lot of content (including LinkedIn live videos) to start conversations with their networks and audiences in new ways. It’s early days, but I’m excited about it!

Hope you enjoy this one!

Ep. 173 - From corporate to consultant - D&I with Andrea Dermody26 May 202100:37:30

It’s an all-Irish line up on the podcast this week, where I’m joined by my good friend and client, Andrea Dermody.

Andrea is an all-round diversity and inclusion guru who’s built a thriving consultancy business off the back of a highly successful career in financial services. She works with organisations and individuals to reshape their organisational cultures to make them more inclusive. The result is that regardless of a person’s gender, background, socio economic experience, race or religion, they have the same opportunities of anyone else in that organisation.

Andrea’s passion for Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) is so infectious and it was an absolute pleasure catching up with her for this episode. So often a company’s D&I policy (if one even exists) is a mere box-ticking exercise where the focus is solely on compliance. Andrea and I chat about why this is ALL wrong, and how when companies move from the compliance space into the cultural space, it becomes a much better company to work at.

Andrea breaks the D&I challenge down into:

1.     The work the organisation needs to do around its systems, processes, policies and its culture. (This one is all about human connections – underestimate it at your peril!)

2.     The work that under-represented people can do for themselves - even for those introverts who might be scared to go it alone

I also loved hearing from Andrea about her work as part of the 30% Club – the group who’s objective is to get a representative 30% of women on boards. On top of that, she’s also part of the Dublin City University programme – a leadership and development programme designed exclusively for women. The programme covers building a personal brand, how you communicate and how you build credibility and confidence within your organisation.

And finally (yes, there’s more!) we talk about how Andrea is using my help with LinkedIn for business to expand her network and reach new clients. I’m pleased to say she’s loving the results already.

Ep. 171 - Moving from connection to client on LinkedIn with Nikki Rausch12 May 202100:47:04

Have I got a treat for you this week! I’m so excited to share this week’s podcast where I catch up with the absolute queen of sales, Nikki Rausch.   Nikki is the founder of Sales Maven where she teaches tangible skills that, when you take action and implement them in your own business, will give you massive results. Not only is she a sales strategist, she’s also a successful author of multiple books, podcaster and founder of the online Sales Maven Society.   In this episode we talk about how to pick up buying signals before you get a sale, and the right (and very wrong – clue: don’t mention Darth Vader) ways to connect with your targets on LinkedIn.   Nikki is a real fount of knowledge for all things sales and being confident. We talk about how to be assertive (but not pushy) and even how to deal with the knock-backs. Here’s just a taste of some of the other advice she shares…   1.     How to be a resource to people and offer them real value 2.     The importance of ‘pre-framing’ a first video or face-to-face conversation 3.     Why you need to have pricing on your website   I hope you enjoy listening to this one.     About Nikki You can find Nikki on LinkedIn or have a look at her website yoursalesmaven.com Exclusively for listeners of this podcast, Nikki has also shared her new e-book ‘Closing the Sale’ which you can download here: https://yoursalesmaven.com/ebook/

Ep. 170 - What is the difference between Connect and Follow on LinkedIn05 May 202100:14:57

Have you seen some LinkedIn accounts with follow instead of connect on their Introductory card?

What does this mean and which should you have on your profile?

How to Connect with someone on LinkedIn

The default setting on LinkedIn profiles is to show the ‘Connect’ button. It appears to the right of your profile photo.

When you connect with someone on LinkedIn, you are automatically following their content.

How to follow someone on LinkedIn

When you ‘follow’ someone on LinkedIn, you will see posts from that person in your newsfeed, but they will not see yours. When you follow someone but don’t connect, they are not following your activity on LinkedIn.

Why do you choose Follow first rather than Connect?

According to LinkedIn, your network should consist of people you already know. The follow option is to follow posts and articles from someone you want to hear from, but you don’t know.

For example, the above profile is the News Editor for LinkedIn News. So you may want to follow her articles on LinkedIn news.

Having a smaller network of people you want to engage with on LinkedIn usually provides a better experience than connecting with lots of people you don’t know.

How to build a powerful network on LinkedIn

One reason to choose to follow someone rather than connect, is if they are a thought leader within your industry and you want to keep on top of what is happening in the industry.

Examples of people you may want to follow – speakers, podcasters, authors, politicians.

The key differences between Followers and Connections
  • When you are connected, you can see each others posts in your feed
  • Followers can see your posts in their newsfeed. If you want to see one of your followers posts, you can follow them.
  • You can only send messages to people you are connected to unless you have LinkedIn Premium*
  • You can only endorse your connections for their skills
  • You can only recommend (or request a recommendation from) a connection, not someone you follow

*With LinkedIn Premium, you can send up to 15 ‘InMails’ per month to people who are not your connections.

Conclusion

If you wish to build a network of people to engage with on LinkedIn, then it is probably a good idea to keep your profile as ‘connect’ first.

If you wish to build a following of people who want to learn from you and read your content, then set your profile to Follow first.

Ep 169 - How to come up with content ideas for LinkedIn28 Apr 202100:15:07

How do you know what to post on LinkedIn?

How can you come up with ideas for content to market your business?

Tune into today’s podcast to find out!

This is something that a lot of people struggle with, and one of the reasons they hire me to help.

  1. This is your business network so try to keep it professional
  2. Be strategic – remember you want to win business on LinkedIn
  3. Keep yourself on a time limit – don’t get distracted and end up spending too long on your LinkedIn

Remember the four pillars of using LinkedIn –

  • Building a valuable network
  • Getting your LinkedIn Profile up to date
  • Sharing content that helps your audience
  • Using LinkedIn Messaging to build on your relationships

Read more here

The four parts to my LinkedIn framework Now, the first piece of good news is that you don’t have to do this a lot to get recognised on LinkedIn. So according to LinkedIn themselves, only 1% of people use LinkedIn, share content, or write posts on the platform at any given week.

Make sure you share content that relates to your role – in this example, Sarah Doherty shares a personal story as well as lessons about personal finance

Start with thinking about all the questions you get asked by potential clients. Write them down on a piece of paper and then under each one, find sub-topics. Keep an eye out for articles or stories in the media to share that relate to your topics. Work on writing your posts with the purpose of serving your audience. Start conversations with your network and you WILL start to get leads and inquiries directly into your inbox.

Ep. 165 - Are you afraid of posting on LinkedIn - tips to overcome your fears31 Mar 202100:14:21

Why are some people afraid of posting on LinkedIn?

This is something that I hear time and time again from people.

Whether it is my clients who hire me to work with them -

  • to help them understand how they can use LinkedIn as a vehicle to raise their profile,
  • raise their visibility online, and win business as a result.

Maybe they want to get speaking engagements, maybe they want to host corporate workshops, maybe they want to work one to one with people.

There are different reasons why people want to use LinkedIn for business. Those are some of the main reasons people hire me to work with them. But I would say at least nine out of 10 clients that work with me have a stumbling block over fear about using LinkedIn to market themselves or raise their profile online. And that's what I want to talk to you about today

Ep. 164 - Should You Court Controversy On LinkedIn24 Mar 202100:24:24

I recently ran a poll on LinkedIn to see if my audience had heard of (or were using) LinkedIn Pods. Along with 'grenade posts', today we dive into what I suggest NOT to do on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is your business and professional network. Yes, it's true, people do buy from people - but LinkedIn themselves have asked people not to share content such as dogs in costumes - it is the platform where people go for business. So here are two things I suggest you avoid -

  1. Being part of a LinkedIn pod - A pod is an organised group of people who are expected to comment on each other's LinkedIn posts. There is an obligation to comment on all the other member's posts from your pod. Why do people do this? Quite simply, they want engagement on their content and 'setting' up comments can actually trigger other people to leave comments as well. Why do I recommend not doing this? Listen in!
  2. The 'grenade post' - this is where someone will post a deliberately provocative post in order to create controversy with their audience. This can generate a lot of discussions but unless it is how you like to work with clients, beware of turning people off!

If both of these tactics bring you engagement, why do I suggest you avoid them? Because of the very reason LinkedIn doesn't want you to share pictures of your dog in a fancy dress. LinkedIn is where people go for business. Sharing content that helps your audience creates genuine conversation and builds on relationships will lead to you winning business. Starting an argument will not. Faking your engagement will not only give you a false idea of how successful your strategy is on LinkedIn but people who are following you, will soon realise that the comments on your posts all come from the same group of people. Invest your time and money learning how to use LinkedIn for business. (yes, some pods are part of paid programs!) rather than trying to cheat the system. Get in touch if you'd like to build a strategy that will help attract your ideal clients to you. www.louisebrogan.com/workwithme

Ep. 160 - 5 ways to connect with a message on LinkedIn24 Feb 202100:23:43

Have you ever had the following happen?

Someone sends you a connection request on LinkedIn with no message and you have no idea who they are, or why they want to connect with you.

Someone connects with you on LinkedIn and as soon as you accept their connection request, they send you a sales message. Or an automated message.

Don’t miss the opportunity to start a conversation

When you connect with someone on LinkedIn without a message, you are missing a huge opportunity.

LinkedIn is the social networking site for business owners and professionals. When you connect with someone, you add them to your network.

In order to build a valuable network full of potential customers, clients and collaborations, start out with having a conversation with your new contact.

When someone logs into their LinkedIn account and sees a handful of new connection requests – 2 with a message and 3 without, which ones do you think they will look at first?

When you receive a genuine message from a new connection, the usual thing to do would be to reply. Now you have moved beyond one of many connections in the newsfeed, to one to one in the inbox.

How can you add a message when connecting?
  • Click on the person’s name that you would like to connect with
  • Click on “Connect” on their introduction card (if you are using mobile, click on the three little dots to the right of the ‘connect’ button)
  • Select ‘Add a note’
  • Write your note and click on Send

Beware: Not all connection messages are the same

Imagine you are at a conference or business networking event. Someone comes up to you, shakes your hand, gives you a business and walks away without saying a word.

Or worse, you meet someone at an event, say hello and they immediately tell you what service they provide at and ask would you like to buy it.

Would this method work with you? What do you think your first reaction might be?

Don’t waste the opportunity to make a great first impression when connecting with someone on LinkedIn.

So what connection request message can you send?

First of all, think about WHY you want to connect with this person. Are they in the same field as you? Have you heard them on a podcast?

Did you see an article they wrote? Will adding them to your network add to the value you get from LinkedIn?

Have a look at their LinkedIn profile – is there something in their profile you can connect over?

What recent posts have they shared? Can you start a conversation about a topic they seem interested in?

Five examples of LinkedIn messages to send when connecting

Here are five examples of messages you can send when connecting with someone on LinkedIn:

  1. The person you met at a networking event – try to send this connection request within a few days of meeting someone:

Hi Traci,

‘it was great to meet you at the event today – I’d like to connect so that we can stay in touch’

2. Someone you have heard on a podcast

Hi Martin,

I heard you on the LinkedIn with Louise podcast – I loved what you said about how to manage teams well. I thought it would be good to connect here on LinkedIn’

3. Someone you want to connect to, but haven’t met yet

‘Hi Barbara,

I saw your post on social media marketing and I liked how you wrote about the different platforms needing different approaches. LinkedIn is my own preference and I’d like to connect with you here. Looking forward to seeing more of your content,

4. Someone who might be able to help you in your business

Hi Louise,

I work with a team and we are struggling to get leads on LinkedIn. I heard your podcast about LinkedIn strategy and we’d love to have a chat with you to see if you can help us.

5. Someone you have been referred to

Hi Allison,

I am connected to Martin Huntbach, and he recommended I connect with you as we have a similar audience. Looking forward to finding out more about what you do.

If you received any of the above messages, do you think you would respond?

If the answer is yes, now you are starting a one-to-one direct conversation with someone.

You may not convert the new connection into a lead but when you get to know someone through a conversation, they will remember you and your business. This leads to genuine business relationships which leads to growth and sales.

Bonus sixth connection request message example

Here is a genuine message I received this week in my inbox:

Hi Louise, I’ve been enjoying your posts and would love to connect and have you in my network. Regards, C

Guess what? I replied and we had a conversation.

If you would like help and support with your own LinkedIn strategy, get in touch to find out how I can work with you.

Ep. 156 - 5 ways to build authority on LinkedIn27 Jan 202100:26:13

When someone is looking for a coach or consultant to help them with a particular issue, they tend to go with someone they trust.

In online business, you will hear people talk about ‘know, like and trust’ factor.

How do you become known?  And more importantly, how can you build up the trust that leads to someone investing in your products or services?

In today's podcast, I talk about five steps to help you build your authority online.

1.  Specialise

What is your area of expertise?

When someone needs a tax accountant, they look for a specialist who focuses on taxes.   When someone is building a physiotherapy business, they will follow a coach who works only with physio businesses.

By choosing your niche – by job type, customer base, age group or location, you will attract your ideal clients more quickly.

Choosing your niche allows you to focus on creating content for that niche.

How can you choose what to specialise in?

Talk to your customers and listen to their main concerns.

Choosing a niche can involve a lot of factors – is there a need for your service?  Will people pay for it? Are you interested in focusing on that area?

2.  Listen to your audience

What do your network want to know about?  Consider the questions you get asked time and time again.

What can you help your audience with?  What are their main pain points?

One way to become known as an expert online, is by creating regular content that answers the questions your audience have.

Create content that not only leads your ideal client to reach out to you, but consider how you can put out messaging that lets people know who is NOT the right fit to work with you.

For example:

Your ideal client may be someone who is in the business start up phase – so your content should help them with the first stages of business.

3. Create content to help your audience.

Start sharing content with your network that showcases your knowledge and expertise.

Keep it simple – you want to be able to attract your ideal clients and customers so don’t overwhelm them.

4. Become known as a guest expert

Consider creating content for other larger organisations.  Become known as a guest expert – choose the publications or shows you know your ideal client is already reading or engaging with.

Podcast Guesting

Start with pitching hosts who take guests – try connecting with podcast hosts who serve your ideal client.

Online Summits

Submit yourself as a speaker for an online summit.  Once you start to appear as a guest expert on summits and podcasts, other hosts will notice and start to reach out!

5.  Talk to your network

Connecting with your audience online is not a one-way street.

Rather than broadcasting out to your audience, try to engage with them.

For Example –

In your daily or weekly activity on LinkedIn, take time to comment on posts from others in your network.

Try to leave constructive comments – think about how you would behave if you were responding to someone speaking in person.

Even if you outsource the content creation for your own posts, we recommend you take the time to interact with others in your newsfeed.

If your audience are on LinkedIn, then you need to create some visibility on this platform that attracts your ideal client to you.

Creating consistent content on LinkedIn that demonstrates your knowledge and expertise will lead to customers and clients reaching out to you to find out more about your services.

Ep. 154 - Top new features on LinkedIn in 202016 Dec 202000:29:10

In 2020, LinkedIn released a LOT of new features – here are some of the top ones:

1. Add a Featured Section

Adding a new ‘Featured’ section to your LinkedIn profile – this section is where you can share your featured highlights including Posts, Articles, Links to external online content and upload photos or documents.

How to use the LinkedIn Featured section in your personal profile.

  2. Add a Poll

Adding a new Polls option to your text posts – one of my favourite new features! I suggest you try this feature out once a month – polling your network is a great way to encourage conversation and debate, plus finding out what your network REALLY think about!

How to use LinkedIn Polls

3. Open to Work

If you are currently looking for a new role, you can add an option to your personal profile that shows your network you are ‘open to work’

Click on the ‘Open to’ button underneath your headline – then choose Finding a new job as your option.

You can choose location, job titles, and whether you want full-time, part-time, temporary or contract work. You can also choose whether to share with only recruiters, or with your whole network.

Once you have completed this, a green circle will appear on your profile picture.

4. Reactions on your LinkedIn Posts

Before 2020, you would have been able to click to ‘like’ someone's post on LinkedIn. Now we have six reactions available – like, celebrate, love, support, curious and insightful.

Remember – if you leave a comment, this will raise your profile and visibility rather than just clicking a reaction.

5. Video Messages

Did you know you can send a video message to your connections?

On your LinkedIn mobile app, go to messaging, click on the video sign and you can create and send a video message.

Ep 153 How to use LinkedIn for thought leadership, with Rhonda Peterson09 Dec 202000:26:13

How can you use LinkedIn to build thought leadership, even if you work in a highly-regulated industry?

This week on the podcast, I interview my good friend Rhonda Peterson. Rhonda is a Coach for financial professionals, a speaker, and a workshop facilitator.

Rhonda guides financial services executives, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders to lean into their strengths and energy to increase their ROI, both professionally and personally.

As more people within financial services using LinkedIn, those who work in a highly-regulated industry seem to struggle to hit the right balance between using the platform to build relationships and remaining compliant with their employer’s regulations.

However, raising your profile on LinkedIn doesn’t need to be causing any issues to your employer or your industry.

Establishing yourself as a thought leader on LinkedIn is possible, even if you work in a highly-regulated industry.

In this episode, Rhonda and I discuss a couple of examples from our networks, and Rhonda shares how she’s using LinkedIn to grow her career as a speaker. If you want to find out how you too can become a thought leader on LinkedIn, make sure you tune in!

You will learn…
  1. Why you should be using LinkedIn to reach out to your connections and ask for relevant introductions.
  2. The exact steps you can take to build your thought leadership on LinkedIn, regardless of the industry you work in.
  3. How you can use LinkedIn to get more work.

Episode 152: Why is marketing challenging for lawyers? With Christopher Melcher02 Dec 202000:35:15

Christopher Melcher is a family attorney in Los Angeles, California. We met when I worked with Chris during the summer of 2020 as he wanted to learn how best to use LinkedIn.

Chris's clients include business owners, celebrities, and trust beneficiaries across California who are going through complex divorces. We talk about how Chris uses LinkedIn, not to find clients, but to connect with and build relationships with fellow attorneys.

We discussed some of the challenges the lawyers face when it comes to marketing and how this can hold them back from building their network/gaining new clients.

You can reach Chris on LinkedIn where he would be delighted to connect with more of his legal community.

I love statistics and analytics in social media - how do you know what's working if you don't go back and find out what engaged your audience?

In this week's podcast, I take a run back through the best and most engaging posts I shared on LinkedIn this year.   No surprise to me (but possibly to you!) that all the top ten were txt only posts - a mixture of LinkedIn polls and pure text posts.

Episode 150: Linkedin - Have you got the basics right?25 Nov 202000:21:46

Are you getting business through LinkedIn?

Do you enjoy using LinkedIn as a marketing tool?

IF you answer either of this with anything other than YES, then here are a few tips for you.

5 ways to get your basics right for LinkedIn Is your network on LinkedIn?

When you are using social media to build your business, the biggest tip I can give you is to choose ONE platform. Decide where your ideal client spends most time, and start building your profile on that platform.

Facebook is great for B2C businesses, Instagram is good for ‘inspirational’ and shopping businesses. Twitter is super for sharing news, events and fast paced networking.

LinkedIn is GREAT for B2B. And people go to LinkedIn specifically to connect with their business network.

By trying to be on all the platforms, you either exhaust yourself, share the exact same content on all platforms or you build a small presence on each one rather than making a larger impact on the platform that will help you to grow.

Why should you not share the same content on each platform?

Check out the image above once more – if I am sharing content on FB it needs to fit in with the tone of that platform. I will write longer posts for LinkedIn that don’t make sense on Twitter. Also, when you see someone you follow who puts the exact same content on each platform, it makes you lose a little faith in them (or maybe that’s just me)

Have you filled out your LinkedIn Profile?

Please complete your LinkedIn Profile. Check out this blog on how to make sure you fill in the whole thing:

How to write a great LinkedIn Profile

Why does this matter?

The statistics on LinkedIn profiles are staggering:

When you add a professional photo to your profile you are 14 times more likely to have someone click on your profile

Updating your current position leads to 5 times more connection requests.

Having at least 5 relevant skills on your profile leads to 31 times more messaging requests.

Keep access to your LinkedIn Profile

You can add in multiple email addresses to your LinkedIn account.

One of the most common issues I come across is when someone has more than one LinkedIn account and can’t access one of them.

Remember when you started work at that corporate job in your 20s and they made you sign up to LinkedIn? If you used your work email only, its quite likely you aren’t able to log in anymore. Here’s how to avoid this happening.

How to add a secondary email address:

  • Go to your account
  • Click on Settings and Privacy
  • Add your personal email address

What type of content do you share on LinkedIn?

The purpose of using LinkedIn is to raise visibility of your business. So your content should be showcasing your knowledge and expertise!

What type of content posts can you create on LinkedIn?

How to make sure you see content from the people you want to connect with

Be strategic – when you go to LinkedIn and view your newsfeed, make sure you comment on the posts from the people in your network that you want to see content from.

The algorithm will keep serving up posts from the connections you have ALREADY engaged with.

I also recommend you ‘unfollow’ those in your network that you don’t want to engage with.

Follow some of these basic steps and you will see an improvement not just in your LinkedIn newsfeed, but also in the types of connection requests you receive, and the return on time spent on LinkedIn.

Episode 149: 5 things to do every day on LinkedIn17 Nov 202000:20:07

How long should you spend on LinkedIn every day in order to grow your network? Should you post on your profile daily? Is engaging with other people's content helpful?

These are some of the questions I answer in today's solo episode of the podcast, where I remind you that while only 1% of LinkedIn users are active on the platform, 40% of users check in every single day. This tells you that by showing up daily, you have plenty of opportunities to build your profile and your network and to grow your business.

So what are the five things I recommend you do every day on LinkedIn? First thing first, you should check and address your notifications. Has anyone commented on your posts? Is a particular post trending under a hashtag you're following? Once you've done that, check the LinkedIn news daily rundown - if you want to find out what that is and how you can use it to your advantage, all the details are in this episode.

The third thing I recommend you do is building your network by connecting with people who engage with your content or who might have a similar audience to yours. Also, don't forget to check your newsfeed and comment on any interesting or relevant posts. This helps you raise your profile and visibility, so you can start being seen by the right people. And last but not least, you should always check and reply to your messages.

If you want to find out exactly which steps you should take to maximise the activities above, don't miss out on this episode! And if you haven't already, go and grab Your FREE LinkedIn Checklist - a guide with daily and weekly tasks to help you build your business on LinkedIn.

You will learn…
  1. Why I don't recommend you post on LinkedIn every day (twice a week is enough!)
  2. Why you should optimise your LinkedIn profile.
  3. And why you should write LinkedIn posts in a way that helps you start a conversation with your audience - stop broadcasting and start connecting!

Episode 147: How To Use LinkedIn Stories for Business04 Nov 202000:25:47

Today's solo episode is all about how to use LinkedIn Stories to engage and interact with your network on LinkedIn.

Have you noticed something new under your LinkedIn profile yet? LinkedIn has just introduced Stories. And if you're wondering how you can use this new feature to support your business, this episode is for you.

This week on the podcast, I share everything you need to know about LinkedIn Stories. As you may know, Stories have been a feature on other social media platforms for a while now - see Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. Like on other platforms, LinkedIn Stories stay on your profile for 24 hours. You have the ability to add up to 100 Stories per day, with a max length for a video story of 20 seconds. This gives you a lot of room to create and share short, quick, and engaging content that is both lightweight and image-focused.

  2. Five different ways to come up with content that will help you start conversations with your network.
  3. Who can see and reply to your Stories, how to add stickers or text, and how to choose from the available colour options.
