Can Nuclear Power the Arctic and Remote Communities with Dr. Anthony Ciccone
vendredi 3 avril 2026 • Duration 37:47
How do you power the places the grid forgot — and could nuclear be the answer?
In this episode, Stewart Muir is joined by Dr. Anthony Ciccone, Senior Vice President of the Global Nuclear Sector at WSP, to explore how small modular reactors could transform energy access in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.
From Canada’s Arctic to remote regions around the world, Ciccone explains why traditional energy solutions often fall short — and how advanced nuclear technologies are changing the equation.
They discuss:
- Why remote and northern communities still rely on diesel — and the risks involved
- How small modular reactors (SMRs) could provide reliable, low-carbon power
- Why nuclear and renewables are complementary, not competing technologies
- Canada’s advantage in nuclear innovation and reactor refurbishment
- The realities of nuclear waste — and how it’s managed
- The economics of nuclear energy and long-term cost considerations
- Energy needs of mining, military, and northern communities
- What the future of nuclear looks like in Canada and globally
This is a conversation about energy, infrastructure, and the realities of powering communities far beyond the grid.
At a time when energy security and sustainability are both critical priorities, nuclear is re-emerging as a practical solution — not just for cities, but for the most remote parts of the world.
The question is no longer whether nuclear is part of the future — but where it will be deployed first.

What’s Really Changing in Global Energy and Geopolitics with Robert Johnston
Season 2 · Episode 22
vendredi 20 mars 2026 • Duration 30:02
Is the world entering a new era of energy instability — and is Canada ready for it?
In this episode, Stewart Muir is joined by Robert (R.J.) Johnston, Director of Energy and Natural Resources Policy at the University of Calgary and former CEO of Eurasia Group, to unpack the geopolitical forces reshaping global energy markets.
From rising tensions in the Middle East to shifting U.S. policy and growing competition for critical resources, Johnston explains why energy security is once again at the center of global decision-making.
They discuss:
• Why global energy markets are becoming more unstable
• The changing role of the United States in global trade and energy
• Canada’s opportunity — and why it hasn’t been fully realized
• LNG, oil exports, and the importance of market diversification
• The impact of geopolitical conflict on energy security
• Critical minerals, AI, and the growing demand for resources like copper
• The future of energy transition and shifting climate priorities
• What business leaders are most concerned about right now
This is a conversation about energy, power, and uncertainty in a world where geopolitics and markets are increasingly intertwined.
At a time of global disruption — from Ukraine to the Persian Gulf — energy is no longer just an economic issue, but a strategic one.
The question is no longer whether the world needs reliable energy — but which countries are prepared to supply it.

Is Canadian LNG a Climate Solution? | Mark Cameron on Energy, Exports & Emissions
Season 2 · Episode 12
dimanche 21 décembre 2025 • Duration 49:35
Canada’s energy exports are often criticized as a climate liability — but what if they could actually reduce global emissions?
In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir sits down with Mark Cameron — Fellow at the Public Policy Forum, Senior Associate with BlueSky Strategy Group, and former VP of External Relations at the Pathways Alliance and former Deputy Minister of Policy Coordination with the Government of Alberta — to unpack the findings of a groundbreaking report he co-authored: "Refuel".
Backed by advanced modeling from Navius Research, the study shows that scaling up Canadian LNG exports by 47 million tonnes per year could lead to a net global emissions reduction of 40 to 70 megatonnes annually, largely by displacing coal and higher-emitting alternatives.
Cameron also reflects on:
• Why carbon accounting should be global, not local
• The growing role of Indigenous partnerships in energy development
• How Canada compares to the U.S. on emissions intensity
• What the new federal–Alberta MOU really means for climate and investment
This conversation cuts through the noise and reframes Canada’s place in the global energy transition.

Is Canada Ready to Lead in Both Tech and Resources?
Season 2 · Episode 11
dimanche 14 décembre 2025 • Duration 50:24
In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir is joined by Nicole Brassard, Vice President for BC at Global Public Affairs, for a candid and far-reaching conversation about one of Canada’s biggest missed opportunities: the false divide between technology and natural resources.
From her deep experience in federal politics, public affairs, and economic development, Brassard challenges the outdated narrative that Canada must choose between innovation and extraction — and shows how integrating tech with resource industries is already driving solutions across climate, labour, and investment.
They discuss:
- Why government silos are stalling innovation.
- How foreign investment is slipping away — and what to do about it.
- The role of First Nations in reshaping project development.
- What the post-secondary system must fix before AI changes everything.
- And why Canada can’t afford to keep punching below its weight.
This isn’t just a debate about policy — it’s about building a smarter, stronger future.
Watch now to explore how Canada can break free from its false binaries — and finally start competing on the world stage.

Can Canada Really Afford the Green Transition? | Jerome Gessaroli on Energy, Economy & EVs
Season 2 · Episode 10
lundi 8 décembre 2025 • Duration 53:38
Canadians are starting to question the true cost of our energy transition. Finance professor and senior fellow Jerome Gessaroli joins Power Struggle to explain why many of our clean energy policies may be outpacing reality.
In this compelling conversation, Jerome breaks down the link between energy and economic growth, the regressive nature of EV mandates, the shaky economics of hydrogen, and why the dream of doubling non-U.S. exports may be more political fantasy than practical strategy. From BC’s energy bottlenecks to global trade dynamics, he shares a pragmatic roadmap for how Canada can balance ambition with feasibility—and why letting the market lead could help us get there faster.
Watch the full episode for clear-eyed insights on where we're headed, what we’re getting wrong, and how to avoid costly policy missteps.

Is the electric vehicle revolution all hype? Is Canada underestimating its role in the global energy future?
In this episode of Power Struggle, Stewart Muir is joined by world-renowned energy economist Dr. Anas Alhajji, who breaks down why the "end of oil" is far from reality — and why Canada’s oil sands and natural gas are more vital than ever.
From flawed EV stats out of China to the $18 trillion investment gap in global oil and gas, Dr. Alhajji challenges the forecasts shaping public policy and investor decisions.
